I've been considering getting a sea mat for ages, but while I'm happy to fork out 50 pounds or so for a nicely printed mat with fields or other terrain, it seems a lot for sea, especially as the boards my table is made from are painted with a sea pattern. Then I came across this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293255992237 (it's available from a bunch of retailers)
It's a (very) thin PVC printed tablecloth. 54" wide, 108" long with a water pattern on it.
For 3 pounds, I thought it worth a punt.
Arrived yesterday, and you know what, it looks pretty good. There are white strips on either long edge, so you get about 4 feet of width in practice. Just ordered another one which will give me an 8x8 sea area if required.
Picture to show how it looks with a couple of ships; the straight line is a crease; the cloth is now rolled up and the creases should diminish.

Excellent idea, a hair dryer should flatten out the creases
Cheers

I think one of the big US retailers like Target sells these
-
that looks v. good - particularly for the price.
a user review mutters something about it not being very resilient, but for 2.99, yep, worth a go.

Great spot and noticed they have been selling well this morning lol
-
On the bandwagon with this. Many thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for the tip-off, as I just bought one too!
:D

Looks like I saw this too late - they are now out of stock

If mine does not work out for what I want it for you can have mine for the same price.

The cloths seem to be back in stock both on ebay and at Partyrama (google for 'Sea plastic table cover')
A shot of two of them being used for a WW2 game of 'Operation Catapult' last night. You need to trim the white strip from the edge of one so they can overlap, but then you can cover an 8' x 9' table.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago and it's on the table to see if the creases drop out, but the hair dryer sounds a good idea, I did wonder about ironing it between 2 damp towels, not sure how that would work. Mrs V might not be happy with a plastic cloth melted into her towels. o_o
I've not had chance to lay any land or ships on it but I think it's going to be great for 28mm although maybe not so much for the much smaller scales 1/700 and smaller. But like Steve said its a lot cheaper than a proper games mat and much better looking than the blue cloth I was using so £3:00 well spent.
Thanks

Thanks for the tip, Steve , just ordered one . I have a clear Perspex sheet which I use to place over board games maps , so I intend to do the same with this . It should flatten any folds , maybe with a couple of heavy books on top , overnight.

Glad to see they are back in stock

I bought a piece of crushed velvet for $20. It scintillates as you walk around it.

I've got a Chinese silk one; not too pricey in Asia. A local seamstress has embroidered it with a compass rose too.
