Title: Dino hunting....where to start ?
Post by: Digits on November 21, 2019, 03:13:30 PM
So I’m busy making jungle scenery for Vietnam, and I’m thinking this is a lot of effort for one genre!

My very first taste of gaming with miniatures was walking into my new dorm and finding the lads there gaming with plastic dinos, a few traveller minis and a blanket strewn over a pile of clothing with a little lichen to represent scrub / trees.

I’d like to get back to those memories so a couple of quick questions please.

1). Is this the right sub forum?

2).  What are the best pulp rules and I’m specifically looking for rules which work in jungle terrain with big lizards!

3) What I are the best Dino figures out there for 28mm?  I’m thinking Jurrasic park types, packs of raptors etc.

Help appreciated.

Quite a few people have used my Palaeo Diet: Eat or be Eaten rules for prehistoric dino hunts. You'll find some cracking game reports here in the Pulp board.

For what its worth,  we're currently working on a pulp expansion for 19th-20th century adventurers to hunt dinos etc too.

Cheers.  I will take a look at your Dino rules.

“Pulp expansion”?  So is there a generally agreed set of rules for pulp gaming?  I see the odd reference to “pulp alley” .....is that what everyone uses?

Rebel Minis has a set of rule for hunting Dinos, plus other sets of rules for other Pulp games and Pirates as well, as you mentioned no sense in wasting your jungle to just one genre.

I use Palaeo Diet for Dino hunting.

My PD thread is here:

You may find a few useful leads for critturs (and a Playmobil Jungle) there, if you are not trying to be too 'realistic'...

The Kickstarter has already closed, but there are a ton of really nice JP dinosaurs and figures that could make for a great game - have no idea how good or bad their actual game plays, but they certainly did an incredible job on the miniatures that could be used with a different rule set 🙂
Maybe something to keep an eye on next summer when it launches if you still haven't found what you're looking for.

Saurian Safari looked good (owned a copy, never playes it sadly)- mainly victorian/pulp era focused, so if you want to do modern 'JP' style settings you might nees to tweak them a bit.

There's also Tooth and Claw & Tusk as options I have seen auggested.

For dinosaurs have a look in the Poundshops, toy aisles of supermarkets, museum shops etc.  Even fairly poor toy dinos can be painted up into decent wargame figures.  We use our own rules in all sorts of games - Pulp, Cavemen, King Kong etc  http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/Claymore05/balloonatic_intro.htm (http://www.morvalearth.co.uk/Claymore05/balloonatic_intro.htm)

and for a fun game try "EAT HITLER" https://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/all_images/WargamesIllustrated/ArticlePics/WI321/archive/eat%20hitler.pdf (https://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/all_images/WargamesIllustrated/ArticlePics/WI321/archive/eat%20hitler.pdf)

Lots to be going on, thank you chaps.

I found a nice set of hunting raptors from Reaper which will be my first paint.....and I SHALL be scouring the shops for toy dinos, as I said, that’s where I started.

Lots to think on with the rules....I’m leaning to wards a mix of Livingston / “She” / Lost World so I,m leaning more to the pulp side so may look at Sauria Safari?

I have a small library of rules that all look fun, haven't sampled them yet on the tabletop.

On the pulpy end, there is Tusk from Irregular Miniatures, and Dinomight from Magister Militum.

On the more [Pre-]Historic end, there is Prehistoric Settlements by Steve Barbor, and the old microgame Sticks And Stones by Metagaming which translates easy enough from hexgrid and counters to minis.  Need to add your own time-travellers though.

It's hard to beat the fun and savings of scrounging up toy dinos that look about the right size; but if you do want to go 28mm metal, Acheson Creations has a nice line:

For anyone who wants to drop down to 10mm, Magister Militum has a very extensive range of critters: https://www.magistermilitum.com/era/pre-historic.html

In 15mm, Irregular has critters and character packs [click on 15mm then scroll all the way down to click on Tusk]: http://irregularminiatures.co.uk/

For Figures:
1) Honorable Lead Boiler Suit
2) Acheson Creations
3) Schleich - certain types

For Rules:
I second Sterling Moose's voice on Carniverse - I am anxiously awaiting the KIckstarter for February delivery as I jumped in on this one. Nick even provided an advance PDF version and it looks quite cool. I have all of the figures listed for the main game from the above 2 companies.

Good Luck!!
Regards,
Hitman

I never knew that this niche in a sub-genre had dozens of rulesets!  :o
Thanks for the input, guys.
