This a project that i have been inspired by reading about the hundred years war, mostly Bernard Cornwell novels and some historical books, i have
started painting some Perry HYW plastics as well. I am focusing on a French medievel town with fortified walls and towers, so far i have some photos of the main gatehouse and some large buildings that will make up the town square, this is a 28mm project so building are up to 300mm high ! some photos

Cracking start 8)

Excellent stuff

Great stuff,
The only change I would make would be adding a fill between the Colombage
Examples Vitré, Brittany

Brilliant stuff!

Wow! :-*
Those buildings are really impressive!! 8)

A lovely start!

thanks for the kind comments guys, and also thanks for the photos Bluewillow, the building i have done are roughly based on Alsace wine region, the last one from Kayserberg
Brian

Fantastic looking, and I see you are properly supervised by a feline overseer. This is good.
I'd agree on the need for some sort of fill between the timbers, but that would also be an enormous amount of work...

Several of the main western battles were fought within 60klms of Vitré. It is also one of the cities we conduct our 100 years war tours in. Quite a large number of the buildings, 80 plus are colombage buildings and the chateau also dates from the late period.
Cheers

yes Cosmo is my mascot of sorts, a great entertainer, yes fill between the timbers could be done with polyfilla but these buildings are taking long enough as it is and any more time would take away time from making the next building, hoping to make 4 large buildings to make the square first, have most of the towers done which will have town walls attatched, after the town square will make blacksmith shop and 3 more bases to fit around the town square bases to fit onto a 4ft x 4ft board
-
Rue du General Rieder ? wanna see chateau Schlossberg :D
-
These look amazing! :o
Give our regards to your able assistant too!
-
Really impressive! :-*
-
I wish you good luck with your project!
From what you are planning to do I deem you are in the start of a work of gigantic proportions so you need endurance and concentration and I'm sure that Cosmo with his serene presence will help!
I'll be following this thread with great interest!
Cheers!
-
Absolutely fantastic! The size and heft of the buildings is really something. I'd love to have a go at this myself one day, but I think it's the sort of thing that would need to wait until there is a dedicated wargames room to store it all in...
-
Wow - seriously impressive work!
Can't wait to see more.
-
Stunning, I'm jealous of your talent and patience.

Yep, the first thing I thought when i saw your post was The First Battle of St Albans!!! I had to check myself o_o
Fantastic work and you can see that you put your heart into it too 8)

You had me at hello. Fantastic project.

Those are very well and neatly build houses. Following on the further progress and looking forward to see more of your work!

Trying to fill between the studs would be madness! It looks fine as it is, but if you want to proxy a fill, it's possible to make the studs that you glue on just a little thinner so that they don't stick out as much. Paint will do the rest!
These look fantastic! I'd love to see the interiors done too though :D
Thanks
n
-
These look great :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I would leave the studs as they are, easier to paint that way!

This is masterclass scratch building indeed :-* :-*

thanks again guys, still working away at the next building

its a slow process due to work but should have the next one ready shortly, also working out the next one after that to complete the market square
Brian

well its been a while but finally got my next building for the town square finished,
this building would go in front of the main entrance of the town wall, some photos, still have to paint all of these and also possibly
fill in between the wood with plaster for a better finish

Brian

Gorgeous!

That is pretty impressive.

Really well done- I look forward to seeing it painted.

Delightful looking piece
Cheers
Matt

Excellent progress :-*
One possible option for filling in between the wood might be to PVA the surface and sprinkle baking powder onto it. It's a fairly subtle effect but might be a lot easier than plastering?
-
Magnificent build

This has really turned out to be an inspirational piece of craftsmanship :-* :-* :-*
Please keep posting up pics, they are digested with great interest 8)

possibly, might test on a lesser building first with pva as a bond then polyfilla flush with the wood,
then scratch a bit away from the edge of the wood after might work, i am playing around with
Hirst Art moulds at the moment to make a small castle for the town but this is turning out to be quite
large in plan anyway, havnt built anything yet, only cast so far !
Brian

Fantastic looking buildings - real labours of love. I am looking forward to seeing the completed versions displayed together as a town.

Brilliant! I'm green with envy! :-*

Top job Skip. These are going to look fabulous when they’re done. Can’t wait to see how they turn out :)
-
Thanks again guys for the support, should have some more photos up today
Brian
-
Another inspirational thread-the work you’ve put into those is superb
-
Well i have been busy playing around with Hirst Arts moulds the last month and have started
a castle project, this will fit in a 3 foot by 2 foot area, 4 towers and a gatehouse plus a keep with a great
hall, so basic enough
Hirst Arts is totally different to what i am used to as i usually build a superstructure plus roof
out of 3mm mdf and then clad it appropriately, with plaster moulds you are actually building the
structure brick by brick or stone by stone plus casting all of the material so a massive undertaking,
i chose this system because i wanted to put models inside the building with a realistic look inside
without cladding inside too plus a realistic thickness to the walls, this might turn into a fantasy project with a town guard of Averlanders roaming the town, anyway here are some photos with
Artizan designs figs and my cat Cosmo for scale who photobombed my session as usual !

thanks AKULA, yes my painting cue is getting rather large, this is only quarter of the castle so will be
a lot of casting to go
Brian

It is coming out impressive and it will have a good Guardian! Cheers!

Splendid start. That’s going to look great.
You’d never want to drop any item of wargames scenery, but you certainly wouldn’t want to drop one made of plaster :o
I had a ‘Linka’ set many years ago, and made some nice houses. Dropped one of those on the floor once. Shattered to a million pieces. Plaster everywhere.
You take care now! ;)

yeah, might not be too transportable, the pieces are 12mm thick so hardy enough compared to
linka which is 3mm but dropping that would make some mess followed by a quick mess of me by
the wife ;D ;D

lol

Great work with attention to detail! I cat wait to see it done lol

Thanks Captain Harlock, yes my cat seems to be in most photos, he just knows when
i am doing photos and rocks on up !

Do you have any end goal you want to achieve with the project?
-
Very very nice. Texture and blockwork look great - painting will really bring it out 8)
-
I can olny join the others in the admiration!
Sorry, if it was already mentioned, but how did you do the texturing?
-
looks to be something spectacular once it ges painted :D love the details in the tower floor, something often seen skipped or taken shortcuts there :D
Keep posting :D
-
Thanks very much guys,
Wow! This is an absolutely stunning project and I love the castle (and its inhabitant) so far.

Yes end goal is a large town with a town square, a fortified wall around the town, a castle with keep
to start and then smaller buildings to make up streets, then possibly a dock, not sure yet
I can olny join the others in the admiration!
Sorry, if it was already mentioned, but how did you do the texturing?
basically the white buildings are plaster with Hirst Arts and the others are mdf with stripwood
matchsticks and stone textured wallpaper from ebay, you might find examples on facebook too
Brian

Thanks!

yet another building started, this time the Journeys End Inn and Tavern, located
on market square where you can find a pint of Bugmans just as easily as the local
loanshark !, also plenty of rooms upstairs for rent, located in Averheim, just gt to put the bar in and tables and chairs

Thanks guys, meant to do a smaller Inn but ended up with quite a large building
thats Hirst Arts for you ! wait till i put the 2 floors and roof on it !

Cracking build :-* :-* :-*

Hi Gamer Mac, the castle will be maybe 20kg when finished, the Inn not sure yet, not so heavy
as the rest will be built in mdf and stripwood
-
Hi, just finished building the Harlequin tavern and inn, all access downstairs for gaming
inside with a new bar and kitchen, took longer than i thought due to casting the roof slates, like the look of them compared
to cardboard shingles though, on with the photos

well i have finished the next part of my castle, completing the
front two towers, curtain wall and main gate, i will be taking time out from this massive
project as i should be going back to work since being at home from lockdown in Ireland
so will be starting back on some painting project, not sure what yet, some photos anyway

thanks captain, its also very big, will need a large table for this one, the next two pieces will be
a tower with small stables possibly attatched and the other the great hall with taller tower
where the duke resides or maybe a wizard
-
Impressive :)
-
Looking god mate, taking notes for my build!
Cheers
Matt

Wow! That is really something quite special! :-*
Have you given any thought as to what sort of colours you are going use to paint the model when completed? I'm thinking mainly of the stonework.
-
thanks for the kind comments lads

i think the stonework will be a beige/ light brown with a dirty brown wash for the joints, this will be possibly
on all the buildings and then the cobbles will be grey to contrast, i will hopefully paint one of the buildings soon
the plaster roof tiles a terracotta/ clay colour and possibly the cardbard tiles as slate, will have to experiment first
Brian
-
Very nice
-

A good choice I think. Anything but grey! Maybe have a few of the stones different colours- possible by using washes?
-
i painted up some samples the first one is a mix of acrylic poster paints painted all over
and then wiped off with a kitchen roll, the second is a drybrushed version of the first with
a pin wash of burnt umber, might try to paint some individual stones to jazz it up a bit
-
whoops sorry the photos !

Looking good so far - will you be applying a matte varnish to make it appear less shiny (or is that just the way the camera has picked it up)?
-
Looking good so far - will you be applying a matte varnish to make it appear less shiny (or is that just the way the camera has picked it up)?
might be just the camera, weathering effects should take care of that
-
Looking good a few different colours on single stones and some green moss will look the part
-
Skip, it looks good thus far. Are you going to vary the tones of the various stones in the walls by adding washed like green greys etc? I think it would make all the difference at the end of the day.
I've seen some brilliant paint jobs on stone walls which I saved so I'll have a dig through the files on my laptop and see what I can find by way of example. If you think it might be useful that is?
-
thanks for the support again guys

yes a few examples would be great !, i am painting one of the big buildings at the moment as the one
above is just an example, had to change my method a little as wiping the excess off in the first process didnt
work, this only seems to work on large flat areas, the larger building has too many small areas that are hard to get to
so i mixed my poster paint to a light honey colour, wiped off excess, a little too much, and then
decided to paint a brown wash over the whole lot, so lots of differint shades with a small brush i think
and see how that looks

Hmmmm I can't find the pictures, they must have been stored on my old laptop, but I did manage to dig this gem out from Geek Gaming on YouTube which you might find useful regarding painting the colour and tone of the stone in your walls:

No probs. I love the subtle effects he gets. I used to work at Durham Cathedral, manually thus I got very used to noticing the differences in hue and tone on stonework.
There seem to be a wealth of vids on YouTube on the subject.

Pinwash version looks great :)

thanks again guys for the support, still blocking in colours, all the little
wooden strutts are taking time though, might take a photo when the colours are blocked in

A good idea. If you have something in front of you other then the model it's sometimes easier to see where you are with things- to see what works and what doesn't :)
