In the past I've been a tad contemptible of Warlord Games dire British Airborne metal castings... wot is going on with them No.4s?
Happily though, in my 'umble opinion, they've really nailed it with their plastic 'Red Devils'. I had the first figure on the production line within minutes of opening the parcel. Each sprue's got a treasure trove of goodies, my first bloke is carrying a sniper rifle and Scout Regiment Telescope. The Sniper rifle is a miniature joy in itself, right down to the correct adjustable leather sling.
Well impressed, great stuff from Warlord Games.

My headmaster at school was Rev Fr Bernard Egan MC, the RC chaplain of Frost's battalion; all the male teachers when I first went there (1966), were ex-Airborne.
Bloody hell, but we heard some stories...... :o
-
My dear Baron, have you ever read the full interview Father Egan gave to the researchers for Ryan's 'A Bridge Too Far'? If not pm me your e-mail and I'll send it you.
:)
-
PM duly sent - eager to read what he said. I've found some more photos of him, virtually all with the pipe he smoked more or less continuously during the time I knew him. We reckoned he went to bed smoking the thing!

Spring 1944, on the moors above Holmfirth in Yorkshire, The Recce Squadron’s Sniper team are training hard…

Looking good, Harry!

Thanks for that, they look a tad better lurking...
in the undergrowth.
:)
-
It seems a bit unsporting, when they are trying to hide, that you keep zooming in for closeups!
-
Does anyone know the manufacturer of the bottom two figures, I've had 'em yonks and can't remember?
???
-
They look like Black Tree Design, comando figures :?
-
Thanks for that...
everybody's bestest manufacturer!!!
::)
-
Got to blow a bit more smoke up Warlord's bum about their plastic Paras!
I've nearly got Harry himself finished, couldn't resist having the silly old bugger with his hunting horn, when I gormed all the extra goodies per sprue. I've built the Bren team and just hope I can do 'em justice with a splash of paint. Should be able to, the first two figures were a joy to do.

What a nice surprise to end the year on. Just gleaned this month's Wargames Illustrated, the freebies are a sprue of late war German Grenadiers. Bought two copies and now have a dozen baddies for Harry's lads to shoot at. Better get a spurt on to the bridge Harry, old lad!

Oh joy, just found another way of sending mi' self mental...
having a pop at Waffen SS 'pea dot' cammo!!!
:o
-
The SS men are in 1:48 scale and do look a tad weird when you're used to stocky little 28mm blokes. If memory serves they were originally stocked by North Star but never caught on.
I've had these in my stash for many years, bought at Sheffield Triples, when it was held at the Octagon Centre...
as I'm plodding on with them they are kind of growing on me.
Here's some of the British Airborne from the same range. More than one person's described 'em as 'absolutely awful' sculpts...
what say the Brethren?
::)
-
Here's a couple of the baddies...

Nice paint work - shouldn't that be tea and a wad or a banjo? lol
-
That Puma's an Eaglemoss 1:43 diecast. I'm not sure whether it's a tad too big for the 1:48 lads? Nice looking model though.
???
-
I rather like the big chaps and your painting of the SS fellas is spot on.
Nice to see the Cecil Lewis book too :)
-
Trying to find piccies of people standing next to a Puma is not easy but it appears from these that it is slightly too large

The Puma (as are the 251s I've got for Jerry to taxi about in) is a tad too big for 1:48 scale, but seems to fit in with the 60s cartoony 'Commando Comics' look I'm after with this collection!
-
Herself's gobsmacked me wiv a good 'un today. I've been painting a couple of Waffen SS blokes toting Panzerfausts. She stuck her snek at wot I was doing and then said...
"They're them things that look like big toffee apples that you shoot at tanks."
When I picked myself up from the floor I asked how she knew such wondrous things...
"Sometimes when you're droning on, some of your crap registers, dear!"

Here's a thoroughly nasty piece of work in the shape of Obersturmbannführer August Von Richter, his vile underlings will not be far behind!

This time next week The Von and his scruffy shower will have tangled with the 1st Airborne, here's hoping...
They get it right in the neck!
:)
-
The Jerry bunch above had been in the stash for about 15 years before they got some paint splashed on 'em! ::)
These big chaps have kind of grown on me, so I ordered a squad of 1:48 American Paratroopers from Scarab Miniatures. They arrived yesterday and the first one's nearly painted...
Currahee!!!
:)
-
Any difference between painting 1/48 and 1/56? In theory, I would assume not, but having personally experienced the differences in painting 1/76 and 1/56 you never know....
(ps: after several abortive attempts, the TFL lads now have your details, and the Freddie Gough stuff - hopefully they will be making contact with you soon!)
-
Great stuff, if the Lardies are Arnhem buffs they'll both enjoy some of the other stuff too.
Painting the big lads, number one difference, is being able to see the little bastards. As for painting, due to galloping old fartdom, my standard of painting is really crap these days. The big chaps get block painted then a bath in strong tone, cop out I know but seems to works well on WW2 figures, I want 'em fighting not poncing about on a cat walk!
:)
