Title: Rescue attempt in a zombie infested area (Picture Heavy)
Post by: Braxandur on July 15, 2009, 12:51:37 PM
I have to split the report into a few parts, since the forum does not like it if I use only one post :(

WARNING - I'm still a bit tired, so next to zombies, typos are probably also present

Last night we had another game of survivors in z zombie filled world. It was played because a) we liked the last zombie game a lot and b) we had too see tmy freshly built world works terrain in action.

We used the same rule set as before, which is combat zone, with some small modifications.

In this game, a group of survivors who were scouting the terain for supplies got caught in a zombie swarm. They fal lback into a warehouse, waiting until a rescue party could come and clear an escape route. While heavily armed themselves, the scouts had the problem that zombies kept converging onto their location. Probably the zombies have some sort of 6th sense for the location of the living.

First some overview shots of the playing field:

As can be sene, the living dead rule the streets!

One of the scouts, Ivan, stands on the roof of the warehouse, hoping to see an easy escape route.

Meanwhile, at the outskirts of the town, the recue party arrives. Duke sees the warehouse and points the way.

Zombies outside the warehouse moan a bit, but do not show too much activity (yet)

While two groups of survivors try to circle around the field, Duke tells his chicks that crossing the zombie filled field is the way to go.

After all, zeds are alllready pouring in from the sides, so the filed sounds relativly safe.

A few more zombies shamble onto the scene, but shooting from the survivors in the warehouse keeps them nicely under control.

Meanwhile, zombies at other locations are conveinently ignored.

Duke and his chicks haven't even managed to get onto the filed yet. They first help in halting a zombies rush on the groups vehicles.

Allthough the shotgun armed cop pays with his life, for the moment the zombie threat is eliminated.

On the other side, the other groups of rescuesr hs cleared a path as well.

Bringing a machine gun and some assault rifles does seem to help a bit...

The guys in the warehouse  see the zombie mob outside growing on most sides.

But they have almost managed to clear the exit. Maybe they should make a run for it?

Duke, the girls and a priest make it onto the field. Which is now empty.

The other group also advances carefully.

The field did not stay empy for long. Zeds start pouring in from all sides. Lara panics and runs away.

Duke is adamant and says they have to go straight through the horde.
Title: Re: Rescue attempt in a zombie infested area (Picture Heavy)
Post by: Braxandur on July 15, 2009, 12:53:40 PM

The zeds like Duke approach and come to thank him.

Only the redhaired cop survives and she follows Lara in running away.

Both the the girls leave the field, with some hungry "fans" in close pursuit.

And still more zeds arrive near the warehouse.

The man with the machinegun takes aim at the zombies following Lara.

Maybe it is really time to leave the warehosue before this group arrives?

After some frantic shooting to clear the front entrance/exit the scouts leave their "safe" location.

The zeds take notice and become active.

While trying to keep ahead of the zobie horde, the group still has to cross the street. This time the danger is not in reckless drivers or fast cars, but the zeds that are in the other street...

One survivor is overtaken, fails to break away and is torn to pieces.

The other survivors are now even more motivated to run away.

After some furious fighting, everyone gets away.

But wait, Mask is not running so fast anymore, what is going on?

BRAINSSSSSS!!!!!!

Barely visible, Mask tries to hold of the zombies, so the rest can escape.

And they do escape. Mask can still be seen, with the zeds all over him.

11 out of 19 survivors manage to return and leave in their trusted mobile homes.

Excellent game and battle report!  And I love the zed with the walker modelled on his base! lol

Did you make the sidewalks yourself or are they something purchased like those sold through Old Crow?

Awesome and inspiring!

I like how there just happens to be a Ferrari parked in that neighborhood! Hey guys, jump in that and let the Zeds try and get you!

Thanks for the wonderful battle report.

Thanks for the kind words, it was fun to post the report as well. Though taking the pictures is quite some work, it's always worth it. Especially if I look back at the reports in a few motnhs/years time :)

@Oliver: The cars are just toy cars as can be bought in most toy stores. They are all kind of brands, mostly very cheap ones though. scale 1:46 or 1:56. just make sure you compare the vehicles with an actual miniature before buying... Otherwise you'll ens up with a nice collection of vehicles that ar just too small or too big...

@Darkoath: I made the pavement myself. Though honestly it is quite some work and I can only advise you to make it if you have either nothing better to do, or are watching a movie or TV serie in the meanwhile. Here is how I made them: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=5483.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=5483.0)

How many Zs participated?

And what ruleset did you use?

And where are the paper containers from?

Can I have it all?  ;)
Title: Re: Rescue attempt in a zombie infested area (Picture Heavy)
Post by: Braxandur on July 16, 2009, 02:45:12 PM
We started with 130 Zs, but in total I guess that with the "returning" Zs we have used a total of at least 200 Zs. We are still limited to the amount of Zs that has been painted   ;)

The rules are Combat Zone, with Pil's zombie rules, which he got into the Combat Zone Chronicles. Though we made some modifictions to them.

The containers are from http://gungnir.come2me.nl/ (http://gungnir.come2me.nl/)

And no, you can't have it all....  actually you can't have any  >:D

Though we'll do our best to post more reports, just to annoy

Hmmm... I need to start painting again.... I think I have less than 10 Zs painted.... and I have about a 100 Z minis I need to clean and prep....

Dunno where he got the plastic mesh from, but you can get aluminum mesh for about £1-50 (2 euros???)  from car shops for body repair...

Plastic is more easily carved into shape, if you need some for post-apocalyptic car windscreens, for example....  ;)

The fences are indeed plain aluminum mesh, glued to some bases. We found this in as household  equipment, where is is sold in round circular shapes as a cooking aid (you put it on you furnace to spread the flames better, which apperently is good for cooking).

The walker zed, Duke Nukem and Ash are all conversions.
As for how Duke and Ash are made, Pil and Malebolgia already described this in the last report:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11729.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=11729.0)

Pil completly schratchbuild the walker zed, so He'll have to tell you how he did that himself

Thanks - I really thought those fences were plastic.

@warrenss2: if you need an Ash, try looking at 'Bruce, the Zombie Killer' here: http://shadowforge.com.au/monk/index.html

The rules for the game were described in the last report. However, to make close combat a little less effective we added an additional rule:

Zombie moan
Everytime a zombie rolls a 6 on his attack dice his moaning attracts more zombies which may be placed in the same manner as new zombies attracted by shooting. A single zombie can only attract one extra zombie per turn regardless of the number of actions spent fighting and the number of 6's rolled.

We found this helped to combat the effectiveness of CC a bit. Also, we ruled that headshots can be shot as normal shots (also at long range and with a +1 to hit modifier at short range) but simply cost more actions.

The fence is aluminium and cut from a splash screen (that you can put over a frying pan). You can but these at any household shops BUT most of the time the mesh is woven rather than pulled apart. So check before buying. In the Netherlands and Belgium you can get the pulled mesh at "Blokker". The bases of the fences are 3mm thick PVC foam (a mix of about 50% air and 50% PVC), also known by brand names such as Foamalux or Sintra. The poles are 2mm thick plastic rod. I stuck the poles to the mesh using wood glue and after this dried I reinforced all the glued areas with lots of superglue (hence the white frosting on the bases). None of these materials were really the cheapest alternatives available and 3.2 meters of fence cost me about 20-25 euros in material alone, but it works ;) I still need to paint them though.

The zed with the walker is a GW plastic zombie with a foil skirt (from an old wine bottle) and a walker made from wire and artboard (fine cardboard used for passe-partouts). Ash wasn't there because the owner of the model (Malebolgia) didn't participate in this game ;)

Argonor - That is one beauty of an Ash miniature, but I'm afraid, with the shipping, that price is too steep, for just one miniature, for me right now.  :'(

Oliver - Another great Ash. Might have to go for this one and their Alice right beneath him.

Phil - I hope you're happy. I have a copy of the Combat Zone rules but have yet to play them... You & Braxandur have convinced me to give it a go.

Sadly we don't get paid for advertising the rules  ;)

Still it's a lot of fun every time. An ideal system for beer and pretzel gaming (or in our case Beer and M&Ms  :D) and it plays reasonable fast as well. I hope you won't be dissapointed.

M&Ms are really important, they have the same colour as the tokens for oppertunity fire, panic, route, etc...

Sadly, they are normally gone long before the game ends...

Thanks for the tip. I tried a Halfords long ago but they didn't know what I was talking about. For now I have enough of the stuff but I'll search a bit more next time I need it 8)

In my case a circle of the stuff of about 30cm diameter was 3 euros, I believe I could make 6 pieces of fence from one piece of mesh, a rectangle would be much more efficient 8)
