I could do with a ruined hovel for my Game of Thrones project, so I’m in
:)

I always enjoy your builds Matt. Looking forward to watching progress. 8)

+1
Bring it on :)

Good stuff

Good luck, I enjoy losing to whatever you build. :D

Ok, making a start on this....
So just a reminder, this will be a piece of terrain for my 28mm Game of Thrones project, representing a derelict/ruined hovel or farmhouse somewhere in “the North”, so mainly stone construction like this one from the TV series.
That said, I think the one used in the series was a bit too well made for my liking...I want the workmanship to be a bit more shoddy, otherwise frankly it won’t be much of a ruin!
My main challenge is going to be TIME...work has gone nuts, my own job has always been pretty full-on but now I’m covering another role as someone retired, so I’m away from home pretty much 5 days a week, and my hobby time at the weekends is coming upon pressure as well, so this is going to have to be a pretty quick build.
That rules out my original plan which was going to be to hand carve the raw materials, so now I’m going for a much quicker method of just cutting some irregular blocks out of a sheet of PVC Foamex....they will be a bit too “blocky” for my liking, but hopefully I can mask that a bit later on.
First up then, the basic shape of the internal space.

A hovel in the snow is a very good idea. The ground floor looks very good.
-
This is looking good :)
-
good start :-* :-* :-*
-
A very evocative reference shot and a great start
-
Only a tiny bit of progress because I was finishing off some figures for my Game of Thrones project...

Akula has redefined 'tiny bit of progress' :o
Already looks cool!
-
Fine start, though.
-
following with great interest!

I'm following your masonry work with great interest. Good start.
Lon

that will be great

Bit more progress this evening...

Looking a bit blocky for my liking at the moment, will introduce more of the thinner pieces into the mix.
Some of the joins will be masked later on, so will hopefully obscure the right angles that are bothering me a little.on the right hand side in the background is the start of a wobbly looking chimney.
-
I like it very much :)
-
Very nice indeed...has “derelict” written all over it
-
see if you roll a handful of bricks between your hands you get bricks with more rounded edges
-
Wow, great technic!
-
Once you start adding in all the biological components, those sharp walls will soften right up!
-
A labour of love, Matt. Knowing how good you are at terrain modelling and greening etc, I think it’s going to look great when it’s done :)
-
I was wondering at first about your masonry. You have totally convinced me :o This really captures the abandoned decayed theme and is making me reconsider how to proceed.

What a dump...and this is the construction phase, not the destruction....
The right hand wall has a chimney with a bit of a disturbing lean on it.

Nothing says “derelict” like a leaning chimney ;) Looking good
-
That looks rather good, like it very much ;D
-
That's coming along nicely.

That's coming along nicely.
Thanks...a bit slow for my liking, but I’m basically limited to a bit of time at the weekend. Probably should have brought a load of stuff with me while I’m away for work, but my car is pretty much stuffed full of gear already ;D
My initial plan was to have a whole wall collapsed, but I’m thinking now that (despite their ramshackle look) the walls will be still standing, but with a piece of roof caved in....all dependent upon future progress.
-
I think the roof idea is a cracker, and possibly makes it a bit more useable as a terrain piece.
-
A bit more snail-like progress today....
....Chimney is still a mess. Have plugged a couple of the larger gaps with a bit of sand, as a bit of an experiment.
-
Great progress when taking into account that you are making every stone ;)
-
Looking good Matt. I thought I was mad building with small foam blocks! :D

Looks great so far! Jealous of you Euro's and your PVC Foamex - haven't found an equivalent in NA. >:(

Expanded PVC is the same stuff in the states. Cosplayers use it to make the hard parts of their costumes.

I am going to have to check that out- it looks like a really useful material.
-
Expanded PVC is common in the sign business (which is where I work). Look for Sintra, Komatex, Intacel - these are all brand names.
-
Thank you for the tip- appreciate that.
-
Thanks for the pointers all! Makes me feel sillier as I had already unknowingly bought some as "expanded PVC" ;D. Hadn't thought about chopping it up for buildings though... seeing your results I'll need to explore that. :D
-
Thank you for the tip- appreciate that.
Palight and Foamalux too. You'll love it, it's like foamcore's older sexier sister...
-
Almost glacial progress :D

Looks good though :)

more little bits of blocks stuck together....

I’d talk about the lean on the walls but to be fair I’m surprised the whole structure hasn’t collapsed
:)
-
lol
That actually looks like it would fall over in a puff of wind ;)
That’s some terrible cowboy builder bricklaying.
I bet it’s going to look fab when you’ve worked your magic on it though Matt :)

The worrying thing is that the walls are actually “in-scale” so they’d probably be a good foot thick at least...it’s just that the farmer cut a few corners when it came to quality control .... maybe Winter was coming...or something like that. Either way, the ironic thing is that it wasn’t the walls that let him down...
;)
-
Bit more progress...
Managed to get the frame of the roof on, plus some boarded up windows and a door.
As you’ll see, despite secure windows and door, the poor unfortunate farmer appears to have had part of his roof “cave-in”....

Next up, need to fill some of the gapping holes in the walls with some liquid green stuff, tidy things a little, and sort out the roof.
-
Nice job on the windows and doors, I think they look nice and rickety... but may still outlast the walls :)
-
That looks brilliant :-*
-
Maybe the farmer built the walls without mortar?
Definitely seemed to have issues before he moved up north. lol
-
I love the roof; it really suits the rough stone work. Excellent stuff. :D
-
Looking great :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Areyou going to use anything to cover the wooden roof?
-

The wood is just the underlay...I’m thinking of slate tiles over the top, but the whole thing is going to end up covered in snow.
-
Looking great so far ;D
-
Barely 10 mins to myself this weekend, fast running out of time... have started some really sloppy tiling.
Intentionally gone with chunky tiles rather than thin cardboard, as I like the look.
I’m now away until next weekend, so will have to blitz it in the last 48 hours...

Looks good!

That looks great- what are you using for the tiles?

Looks great 8)

Really like your windows and doors, very effective!
-
Thanks everyone for the encouragement :)

It’s just thick card...basically whatever was lying around in my games room :D
-
hope you have time to get it finished
-
Good luck this weekend!
-
Looking good!
What are you using for the tiles? Styrene strips?

Looks like I'm in the same boat, although I'll probably have a little extra time on Thursday evening.
Good luck on the final sprint; I'll be right beside you, trying to keep up... :D

That's the way to do it!
