Title: BSC2020 McMordain's crashed Spaceman Spiff ship
Post by: McMordain on December 23, 2019, 12:13:53 AM
I will probably build something for Necromunda/general sci-fi themed.
No idea what, though, at the moment...

I was thinking hard what to do, then I remembered my (embarrassingly still unfinished) BSC2017 entry. I used some cinema cup lids in that build with a clear plastic half sphere as canopy. Even back then I thought this would be a great base for a small saucer like space craft, and as I love Calvin and Hobbes, Spaceman Spiff's dashing red spaceship instantly came to mind.

As he almost always wrecks it when landing, I decided that I will build a crash landed Spaceman Spiff spaceship. I also want to play around with the model water I bought for my BSC2018 entry but did not used, so it will be in a pool of some toxic alien goo. Depending on how the build goes I may also do one or two additional pools to go with the centre piece.

Soaceman Spiff is a character that Calvin creates from the Calvin and Hobbes books. Should be a cool build.

I did some research to get some reference pictures (which definitely did not turn into reading Calvin and Hobbes comics for a couple of hours...  ;) )

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49333343418_bef1b50289_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2iaqhfw) on Flickr

These show the landing gears, the fins at the back, and the cockpit. There is some variation in the main control device, sometimes it is a wheel, other times it is one or two sticks. I will probably go for a wheel. The two tanks(?) behind the pilot seat is very distinctive, they are a must have. The first two pics also show that there is some panelling on the surface of the ship, which is good, as I didn't want to make it with a simple smooth surface.
My main problem is the engine. The last picture is the only one I could find which shows the ship form behind and under. It looks like there is a hole there for some kind of exhaust, but it's not much. I guess I have to come up with something myself.
Also while I would like to make this as close to the original as I can, this will be a terrain piece for 28mm sci-fi and Necromunda, so I will do it a bit more realistic way. I may add some guns to it as well. I have to also decide if I want to make it as a freshly crashed ship or something that has fallen a long time ago.

I had to search for the basic components for the build for a while as I did not remember where I put the clear plastic spheres...
This shows my original idea. Unfortunately the shape of the lids are much more different than I remembered. I think it would be too much work to cut the rim and shape the edge of the ship from something (foam or GS). I don't wan't to use it like as it is either. So I will look for some small plastic plates with a suitable diameter. Hopefully I will find something useful.

gamer Mac: You can read Calvin and Hobbes here for free (https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/), if you are interested. As Elk101 said Spaceman Spiff is on of Calvin's imaginary characters, who mostly appeared in the longer and colored Sunday cartoons.

marianas_gamer: Aside of some home-made stuff I couldn't find anything Spaceman Spiff related in miniature form.

Yeah probably nothing official, or anything that's inspired by Calvin and Hobbes specifically, but there's a lot you can do if you have the imagination, and I feel I should at least mention Maledrakh's recent LPL entry for those who might have missed it:

Well things didn't go as planed in the last two weeks... Sickness and too much work put me behind schedule :(
I had to order some materials as well. Finding a webshop with a good stock of Evergreen plastics and acceptable shipping is hard.
I also did some (horrible) sketches of what I have in mind.

The A version is half submerged in a swamp/pool of goo (like Luke's X-wing on Dagobah). Version B has the ship stuck between to tall columns of rock (but don't ask me how did it get there lol).
The last one, version C is a crashed on the ground, mostly striped down ship, with an abandoned temporary shelter. I ruled out version B, as I don't think it would be a good gaming terrain piece.
Which leaves A or C. And I can't decide between the two  o_o
However I run into a problem, I couldn't find any plastic plate with a suitable shape, to use as a base for the ship. This means I will try to build the entire thing from scratch (that's why I need to order some stuff). I will do some tests with cardboard in the next few days, to get the dimensions and shapes right. Hopefully by Sunday I will decide what to do exactly  :)
Hopefully next time I can post some pics of some actual work  :)

I love the idea of "jammed between two rock columns, don't ask how it got there".

Seems like the sort of thing Calvin would do with his sled when he and Hobbes went hurtling through the woods, only with trees. Do that one!

Make it modular for transport?  Magnets or connecting dowels?

Am I helping?   ;D

Ahoy!

I apologize for the lack of updates. Things happening in my life distracted me and made hard to concentrate on the BSC. As these things are still ongoing, I may not be able to finish the project in time (which wouldn't be the first time anyway  lol ).
However I do not plan to just give up and as I had this weekend all to myself I did make some progress.

Last week I made a quick test of my planed building method using cardboard and paper. I helped me decide the dimensions and provides an useful visual aid.
This method does not give it an as nice curve as I would like, but this is the best I could come up with.
You can also see what I plan to use as thrusters.

Yesterday I cut out the base circle of the structure and the 16 "ribs" which will hold the panels. I will sand these to the same profile, then, after I attached them to the base ring, I will glue a 3-4 mm wide strip on top of them, which will hold the panels. I still have to figure out how to cut the space for the engines.

@Sinewgrab: It depends  ;) I thought the same for the columns as well, but I still think it wouldn't be a good gaming piece.

I decided to make version A, the ship sinking into a swamp. I like the C (and B) more, as working on the inner parts of the ship would be fun, but I definitely couldn't finish that version in time. At least with A I still have a chance.
What I have to decide is if I want to cut the ship after I done the body, or before assembling the parts. I'm thinking the former would be easier, but I'm not sure.

That looks good to me. Your styrene circle is cut very cleanly- what are you using to make the cuts?

Thanks :)
For straight cutting usually an xacto knife or a craft knife, if it still has a sharp blade. I cut along a steel ruler, lightly, until I cut through. If the plastic is 3mm or thicker, I usually just cut halfway through and snap of the piece. Then clean up the edge.
For curves, up to 2mm, I use a very sharp xacto knife. I cut the piece to a rough shape, then use files and sandpaper to smooth it to the required form.
For circles I either use circle cutters or a handheld jigsaw, if the plastic is thick (2mm or above). Then as above, it is just a matter of filing and sanding down the edge.

Straight cuts are fairly straight forward; I find getting a smooth curving edge a lot more difficult. I have used both a dremel rotary tool and saw max to cut plastic before but they tend to melt the styrene which I'd have thought would happen with a jig saw too. The new dremel moto-saw looks handy; doubles a as a scroll saw too. :D

By handheld jigsaw I meant this kind (https://previews.123rf.com/images/henadzipechan/henadzipechan1808/henadzipechan180800221/106389649-small-hand-held-jigsaw-for-wood-cutting-isolate-hand-operated-jig-saw.jpg). I use a metal cutting blade for plastic. I had no problem with melting the plastic so far  lol

I'm sorry to be a disappointment, but I'm a little low on energy and motivation to finish this project on time. I still like the basic idea of the build and enjoyed making it so far, but I rather not rush it, just to finish it for the competition.
I made some progress since last time anyway, so here is the current state of the project:

I put together the base parts of the ship and made some foundations for the panels that will cover it. I also fiddled whit the engines a bit (not pictured).
At this point I decided I do not want to cut this up once it is done... Too much work went into it, so I will make this as proper model. Which left me at square one (this was last weekend). This also demotivated me a little and this being entirely my fault doesn't help either... lol

I thought about what to do.
Because for the terrain piece I do not need a whole ship, I thought I could make half a ship from card, which would be faster than making it from plastic.

So this where I stand currently. I'm not ready to give up yet enterally but with the currents speed this is going it is unlikely I will make to the finish line.

Ahoy!

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone  :)

I did some more work:

I added the hull plating then cut and sanded it to shape. It's far from perfect but it will do.
After this I glued in the engines. I'm thinking of adding some shielding for the underside of the exhaust. They seem to be a bit too exposed for my liking.
Then came the fins which gave the whole thing that Spaceman Spiff vibe  :) I also added some damage to give a reason for the current state of the craft. I planned to make it bigger and do some detailing inside with exploded tubes and wires. However I have forgotten it when I was doing the plating and glued blasted thing on... :( So it is a smaller hole and you don't see much inside.

The next big thing is the cockpit. I need to make a not-entirely-circular panel which slopes inward, and I'm not really sure how to do it...
I'm tempted to just put the cockpit canopy on and smudge it so one cannot see inside, but I really want to fiddle with the detailing inside. I have the whole Friday off, so if I will tray to do it, and if it's no good I will just hide it with the canopy.

Well I finished building the ship today.
After refreshing my memories about some basic geometry I managed to make a template for the panel. After some cutting and gluing I got this.

Then came the detailing.

The pilot chair and the steering wheel is on a separate base for ease of painting.

Lastly I added the damaged canopy.

I will paint it tomorrow, then attach it to the base and do the texturing. Hopefully I will be done by Sunday afternoon.

Sadly I couldn't find anything that would make a good Spaceman Spiff, and I didn't have time to convert something.
That said, if anyone have some suggestions for possible miniature candidates feel free to share it.

As for the build the painting, weathering and base is finished. I'm really curious what will you think about the finished product :)
