Thats what happens when you get a 3d printer and your first prints go wrong.
I will do a destroyed Otter in Vietnam.
-
lol
-
Will change the theme of my build to Huey crash as my son managed yesterday to drop a 3d printed Huey model :(
-
Good idea!
-
So at the weekend I started on this project. I based the parts and added some more detail. I decided to do three bases , 1. The main airframe, 2. the tail section, 3. one of the main rotor blades. I added some pipes and electricity lines to the broken joint between the main frame and the tail section. Furthermore I added some bulletholes in the canopy of the pilot and in the turbine section . After all there must be a reason for the crash. Then I started to do the basing. I tried to model the crushed soil of the impact to show the force of the crash, not sure if that comes out as I intend to. The main rotor piece is stuck in the ground by the force of the rotary movement of the blade. Hope that makes all sense .

and the rest of the pictures:

Good background story and an impressive start

I love this idea. Great way to use a broken print.
-
Good bit of salvage that :D
-
Nice work - a good use of a damaged print
:)
-
I think it looks very convincing, not sure if anyone would have survived that crash landing , though .
-
Indeed Belisarius I don't think so either. Probably the co pilot couldn't take over quickly enough to do a proper autorotation or the ship just didn't have enough power left as it was hit in the jet engine and the pilot ( sitting on the left) probably was unconscious or dead before the crash.
-
So some more work done. Put some sand and gravel down as base for the jungle terrain to be added after painting. I put on the base coat, I like to use black gesso on the prints as that tends to hide the unevenness of 3d layer printing. So these will be the last pictures as I have to do some proper paintwork next. There will be lots added later and I will show pictures of the jungle build around the ship but no more pictures of the complete thing!
-
Look forward to seeing the painted version later on
:)
-
Gorgeous.
-
As I can't show any more pictures of the build , as the first layers of paint are applied I thought I show you how I did my own flocking material for doing the jungle around the heli crash site.
I have a friend who does upholstery and he gave me some offcuts of the spongy material you use for doing seats on sofas etc ( see the first picture). I cut this up and put it in a blender together with some water and blended it ( second picture). I then mixed colors ( ordinary housholdcolors for wall decoration) with PVA and pressed the blended pieces into this so that the stuff soaked the mixture up like a sponge. Spread this out on a newspaper and let dry. ready to go scatter material!

Way to go !! :-* Love it !

What a great idea Tom.
I need never splash cash on Woodland Scenics foliage ever again! :)
-
Brilliant idea, though I think you're taking the bit in the rules about refactoring commercially bought items a bit far :)
-
I don't want to get accused of stealing ideas though ! this foliage idea is from the terrain tutor over on you tube. But I liked it so much that I had to spread the word.
the beautiful thing is that you can use any color so you could do black and grey ones and mix them for smoke or yellow and red ones for flames or even purple ( I am thinking about doing colored smoke for my Vietnam games).

AH,hhhh , and what did your wife say when she found the blender ? :o

AH,hhhh , and what did your wife say when she found the blender ? :o
lol ....call it strange coincidence but ever since I discovered this amazing technique our blender disappeared from view
-
I am very careful and always do this when she is away lol Don't forget to clean up afterwards though!
-
Looking good so far!

This is what we like abou the BSC.
-
great ideas how many broken helicopters did you use?
what scale?
-
Thank god there was only one helicopter broken . So I used that one. I got an STL file for a 1/100 UH-1C Huey from wargaming 3D, if I remember correctly. I resized it to 1/50 and printed it with a resin 3d printer.
-
Your resin printer made a gerat job, the model looks like a plastic kit
-
Thanks, it is an Anycubic Photon and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is quite cheap for a resin printer and is used by many people even for commercial purposes.
-
Here is another little update. The painting of the model is almost finished I need to apply some decals though as my freehand is not that good. This contest is about building from scratch and as there are no decals for a UH-1C in 1/50 I made my own.
I got some images of google and bought some decal paper (white ) of amazon: https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01N6CJF3Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
After resizing the images and printing them on the decal paper I was ready to use them. As I can't show the model here is a picture of the decal sheet:
-
does that need a special printer?
Lovely stuff :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
No, it is paper for an inkjet printer
-
Very nice job you did on those decals....will look mighty impressive come painting time
-
Thanks
-
So now that I dropped out here are some more pictures of my finished build:

Some great pictures on your blog tomrommel1.

Very nice indeed. Will make a great objective marker for a Vietnam game.
