Title: Happy Unpacking Thread re: Xmas 2019
Post by: FifteensAway on December 26, 2019, 03:25:46 AM
No, not the secret santa thread.

This is the: What did you get for your hobby on the big day?

My wife got me the 33 packs of Peter Pig ACW I needed to wrap collecting ACW figures!  (okay, so I selected and ordered them but I had to wait until the Big Day to unwrap them and now they are sorted and will get worked on - eventually!).  And we won't count the order I've been itching to do for years, I finally sent off my order for some of the lovely stuff from Baueda - but it won't arrive until into the new year.  And that might be my last hobby order.  There is now nothing I want that I am aware of that is made that I don't already have.  Unless someone knows where I can order an additional forty years of youthful energy!

So, what made your hobby day?

For me it was an entirely hobby free day...

Though I did get the Randall Munroe book "How To...".

Got some goodies from friends and family.

A few sets of rules that I asked the kids for. The base set of a fist full of lead and the Napoleonic supplement. The Contact front rules, I bought myself after reading up they were good, so this is a little light reading over the holiday.

Then there’s a very nice 1/200 modern building and a set of bill boards for my 1/200 Cold War, if I ever get it to the table.

Then at the front there is a fine set of medieval coasters for the shed, so we don’t spill our drinks during the next game.

And finally, a super scratch build artillery piece by has.been. It’s for our 28mm Askari games. It’s to represent one of the guns removed from the SMS Konigsberg.

Here it is on January 6, although I know what my presents will be: a brush set from Artis Opus, slippers and Dominic Lieven's book on Russia in WWI.

That is what I always think. I have got everything I need. I can stop now and play with what I have.
Then I go on LAF and there is something new and shiny!

No presents till Saturday when the brother's family come into town.  Only one I know of that's "hobby" related is 500 rounds of 9mm ammunition...and that's simply because the tiny box weighs about 12 lbs. :D Even my brother couldn't hide that fact when he handed it over to me.

We don't do much in the way of presents in my family, so I'm not expecting anything wargaming related, honestly.

From my lovely wife, a Deepcut 6' x 4' clouds over the countryside (for my WW1 aerial),
and courtesy of our local Aquarium shop moving, two bits of scenery at 50% off.
From friends a made up MDF storage tank unit (see the Fight at Yb-Gur thread) and
an un-made Sci-Fi habitat. Happy days.

Hm...I got a gift card to a woodworking store. Knowing me, the odds are that it eventually turns into leadworking or at least foamworking, somehow. lol

No new lead, but I'm already sitting on top of a lead mountain of madness so maybe better that way. :-I However, I received my Death May Die game box this month, which may require its own slot in the painting queue...

The best gift, by far, has been a full week of free time for cleaning up the general mess and restarting some projects. I'd need more of those.

Plenty of gaming stuff at the house of Fish.

I received the new Judge Dredd starter box - looks good despite limited amount of villains being induced in the base rulebook - could an expansion be in the works?

Younger lad (aged 7)  received 'Tanks: the Modern Age' while his brother (aged 9) got a couple of issues of Warhammer Conquest that have enough for a chaos rhino and a copy of Star Wars Risk.

Not a bad haul for everyone.

I got the necromunda palanite enforcers and the red gobbo, along with the perilous dark frostgrave book.

The palanite figures are as nice in person as they looked in the pictures and may well be jumping up the painting queue.

I bought myself the ambots and bullgryns, as I'm working on a bit of a cyberpunk thing just now  :D

My wife gave me the Battle Systems Frontier Core Set plus Medical Bay add-on so my Colonial Marines and Aliens have something to fight on and my son and daughter gave me 4 board wargames.  My miniatures wargaming is slowly being replaced by more and more board wargaming.

One of my sisters got me some gorgeous Wargames Foundry Landsknechts five years ago, though.

It takes some of the mystery out of it, but MrsCub and I started writing 'want lists' at Crimbo time a few years back. She buys some of the things herself and then farms out the rest to family, so I got a lot of lovely stuff.

A book on Robert Guiscard in Norman Italy, Bernard Cornwell's latest Uhtred book, the latest Judge Dredd Complete Case Files issue, a box of Star Wars Hoth Rebel Troopers, a box of Star Wars Hoth Tauntaun Riders, and some pleasant surprises from my dad, a bunch of Vallejo paints and a pack of quality brushes. A good haul indeed.

Rick W., I’m looking forward to putting the Frontier Core Set together.  I’ve had painted Leading Edge Games Aliens and Colonial Marines miniatures sitting around for many years.  We’ve rarely played with them because our group has very little in the way of sci-fi or futuristic scenery.  I have a couple suitable structures but after a couple games it became clear I needed something more in line with our expectations of an Aliens game would look and play like.

Ragbones, I was originally not a fan of cardstock terrain (and I am still not a fan of medieval fantasy cardstock terrain) but for some reason Battle Systems changed my opinion 180 degrees with their sci-fi stuff. And it saves me painting time to focus on painting medieval fantasy terrain. What I need to see now, when I get the time, is how I feel about mixing their sci-fi cardstock terrain with painted 3D plastic terrain since Christmas brought me a bunch of Mantic sci-fi terrain bits.

Edit: And I love it when folks like Battle Systems sci-fi terrain because that means we are likely to see the company do well and release more stuff!

I bought myself some Perry AWI militia and some Crusader woodland Indians as I am planning on doing something based on the Peckuwe campaign of 1780 using Rebels and Patriots or the new edition of Muskets and Tomahawks.

My wife bought me the Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Uniforms of the American War of Independence which I am very impressed with.

My family don't understand and I don't get any hobby stuff typically.

Whilst doing some Internet shopping for presents, however, I did turn up somewhere selling a Star Wars Legion AT ST for £22 with free postage. So that is a present of sorts!

Pictured alongside a Dewback rider and some Rebel pathfinders I also bought myself for Christmas!

Sold some stuff in November, so I bought myself a box of the new Necromunda Cawdor, and for Christmas, via gift cards, I bought the rules and a copy of Inquisitor to replace my long sold-off copy.

Plenty to do in the next months!

armchair general, can you tell us more about the illustrated encyclopeida - especially if you can compare it to the Mollo book on AWI uniforms?  If so, thanks!
