Title: Broadening the Fantasy collection (SS&SS made me do it!)
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on December 29, 2019, 01:14:28 AM
Hi,

for christmas I got myself my own copy of Sellswords&Spellslingers. Played the game several times with friends over the past year and greatly enjoyed it.
As with everybody who gets this set of rules I thought "oh, this is great, I can finally use all my fantasy stuff!". Only to realize that "my fantasy stuff" is plenty, but kinda monochromatic - a large Warhammer army of Dark Elves and a smaller army of Warhammer Empire.

So I guess I'll need some more variety in my Fantasy collection. My mates already have stunningly wide collections of stuff, so my main goal is to get my own collection a bit broader while concentrating on stuff they might not have as much of yet. Oh, and I'll try to stick to what I got in storage already too.

For now I thought it would be a nice idea to have some generic baddies at hand. So I grabbed one of the boxes of the absurdly nice and absurdly fiddly Wargames Factory skeletons I got a bunch of years ago and put some of them together.

I've always been a big fan of 'naked' skeleton warriors. The more bare-bones the better. These here will get some hoplite round shields as well once I got some fitting decals. I may have to buy those, because I really can't be bothered to freehand them. The paintjob's a bit rushed, but seeing as these are really just generic cannonfodder baddies it will do.

So much for those right now. Next I plan to do some Warhammer beastmen and maybe some zombies after that. I'd prefer to do something more light-hearted like Marauder goblins or stuff like that, but I don't own those, and apart from that, my mate virago already has an amazing collection of mid-1990s Orcs and Goblins. So I'll stick to the minis I already have, as per the plan.

Hope you like the skeletons so far!

Nice job on the skeletons. My (already extensive) fantasy collection has expanded considerably since I discovered Sellswords.

@Sunjester: I bet! The thing is that, since SS&SS lets you do anything, all of a sudden every single 28mm, 20mm and 40mm fantasy miniature is considered an option. It's a slippery slope!

@Bloggard: Either that or it's gonna end me. :p

@OSHIROmodels: Cheers!

@AKULA: Many thanks for droppying by and commenting!

@Swordisdrawn: Thank you! Painting them probably didn't take much longer than putting the guys together. :p

Things might be spiralling out of control now...

Lovely skeletons. Very classic ‘Argonauts’, never a bad thing.

Lovely set of rules too. As well as being solo or co-op, it’s nice painting small interesting batches. A few goblins here, maybe a few zombies, then an ogre as palate cleanser. Keeps things fresh and varied.

My only wish is (much as I could enjoy 4 Against Darkness) that they could release another SS book now and then.

Usually my instant reply is "baah, Sellswords&Spellslingers has everything you need in the book, why would we need any supplements?", but ...yeah, it would be nice to get something new on top. ;) 4AD is an amazing, unique thing, but to be honest I haven't played it since 2 weeks after the release.

@FramFramson: :D Yeah, well, they are  funny. Always laughing, dancing, ...

Here's an update on the beastmen warband I'm currently very hastily painting up:

I just don't know how you paint so quickly considering the amazing quality of your paintwork! You're obviously some kind of sorcerer or you've made infernal deals with devils! That's what I'm telling myself, anyway. Joking aside, fabulous work sir!

@Gibby: Thanks very much. :) Well, I have no life what so ever and I cut corners on the painting. The backsides of these minis for instance are all bare metal and plastic. Well, except for the butts. Painting hairy cheeks gives me a sense of enormous well-being.  lol ).

oh man, come on, that's crazy - you finished that bunch to that standard in a couple of days?

Two, I think. :)

To be fair, I didn't leave the primer to dry for nearly enough time. :D and they're far from being finished of course.

@majorsmith: Well, I have to get stuff done quickly while I got the time to do my own minis. :D Thanks muchly for the comment.

Heyhey, happy new year. These were finished last night already, but my camera's batteries were empty and I had to recharge over night.

As mentioned above, these aren't really very showy. Basically just so I got baddies for fantasy gaming as stand-ins for Orcs. :D  Hope you like them!

Hehey, here's two more dudes I just did because I had them at hand. This whole 'painting just so the things are painted, not necessarily for looking nice"-thing is pretty liberating. :D

Wow, they look fantastic.

I'd not heard of the game before. If your collection of beastmen is anything to go by, I like the scale of the warband. I love fantasy skirmish games but find that skirmish warbands are often way to small. 5-9 models is seems to be common and whilst quick to paint, doesn't really feel like a warband on the road, seeking their glory or riches.

@sundayhero: Thanks very much! :)

@Sunjester: Cheers. :)

@Mallo: Thanks very much for the comment! Sellswords&Spellslingers works a bit differently. My posts have probably been misleading. :D It's a fully cooperative fantasy game in which each player plays one to three characters. Each game represents a quest or the blow-off fight to a quest and it's not uncommon for the characters to fight quite a lot of baddies. So I realized I got to get some baddies done (unless the characters will only fight Dark Elves or Saxons ;) ).

I posted a Sellswords and Spellslingers battle reports here which will probably give you a better picture of how the game works: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=115012.msg1439501 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=115012.msg1439501). On Halloween the past year we also had a big themed game. https://www.tabletopstories.net/language/en/2019/11/sellswords-and-spellslingers-halloween-special/ (https://www.tabletopstories.net/language/en/2019/11/sellswords-and-spellslingers-halloween-special/).

As for games which might fit the bill of what you got in mind - have you tried Dragon Rampant? That works reasonably well. Or of course Saga:Age of Magic. Many people enjoy that one. I haven't tried it yet (since I got turned off by it from playing 2 or three games in 2013 and not really being convinced by it as a historical or wargame. :) ).

One more thing you need to play Sellswords and Spellslingers is loot markers. Slain enemies drop one of these each for the heroes to pick up.

(https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2020_01/loot.jpg.569e3a19a3549b162dc130833575fc08.jpg)

I made 22 such markers now, because usually quite a few of these are lying around (as long as the players are wise and don't waste a lot of time looting!).

Okay, since I got the Beastmen, I also got this:

MAYBE it'll be used on Friday already. Depending on the scenario we play. :)

@AKULA: Thanks very much. :) Much appreciated.

@Melnibonean: I've been planning to write up a proper review of it for months, but it kept on getting posponed. :D It's a hoot though. Fully cooperative heroic fantasy things. Very much a 'toolkit', but you can do everything with it. AND it's good fun!

You can find SeSo&SpSl (rolls right off the tongue :P ) battle reports of mine here:

Heyhey. Since the lockdown (and an initial drought of no gaming at all) I managed to get my brother to play Sellswords&Spellslingers with me and for some weeks this has become a fixture now. Apart from all the stuff I should be painting this kind of thew off my painting plans. The Sharp Practice 1809 project got delayed a LOT now and if I have time to work on my own stuff it now is SS&SS related.

First off, here's a Halfling Hot Pot:

(https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2020_05/2026149081_hotpotschrift.jpg.25bbe870971f38033c901b83c7442cfe.jpg)

Not my own mini, I just got to paint it. These little chaps I will send off along with the Heroquest set I painted recently.

Then I cleaned the last batch(!) of Super Dungeon Explore figures and primed them. While the primer was drying (and primer can barely dry for long enough), I worked on some more generic baddies for my own Sellswords&Spellslingers collection. I still had some Mantic and Wargames Factory zombies built from back in 2012/13 when I was working on my modern Zombie skirmish collection. I got out some sprues of Mantic zombies (which in general are OK, just a bit limited in pose and for some reason they're huge). The thought of building and painting just 10 to 15 generic Mantic Zombies bored me so much I almost fell out of my chair. So I got out some more bits and hacked up their arms for some more variety. Over the next hour or so the theme went from "zombies" over "demonic, flayed looking lanky viking tribe" and "swamp ghoul people" to "generally nasty wild family Glühwürmchen. The kind of people the postman prefers to forget about on his tour".

(https://i.imgur.com/6xvxnUB.jpg)

I added some bits, a 13th dude (based on a Warlord Zulu warrior body and other bits), and some Green stuff. Now they're curing. I'm aware that these aren't enough for a full Sellswords&Spellslingers Scenario (for which I usually calculate with at least 20 baddies required for a gang of 4 characters). But they'll work OK as allies of the scenario's nasties, for a scenario event, or something like that.

Not perfect, but at least they look a bit different to the regular Zombies now. And I intend to stick to that theme for the paintjob as well. :D Because who's got the time. There's plenty of other stuff to do, and these are just for myself after all.

Right, between drying times on things I SHOULD be painitng, preparing blogposts, and so on I quickly painted these up:

@Melnibonean: :D Cheers. One of the more 'off' bits I've done lately. But it's good to have them.

@Sunjester: Me too! The whole SS&SS thing ground to a halt a bit recently, but I'm sure it'll start up again. Once The Supplement is out at the lastest, I suppose. ;)
