I started with painting up a few figures that had been gathering dust on my painting desk. No it seems that my love for fantasy has come flooding back in a big way. I haven't played any sort of fantasy game for almost 30 years. I did paint 3 or 4 Wahammer Fantasy armies about a dozen years ago but I had no interest in the game, so I never played it.
So now, after a long sabbatical my love for fantasy has been revived an thinking back to my love of fantasy when I read Tolkien, Howard, & Moorcock and started playing D&D in the late 70's (I played AD&D continuously up to the mid 90's). These days I'm going to aim for Dragon Rampant and/or Frostgrave (etc.) with the ultimate goal of finding a decent big battle game and building up to it. Any advice on different games will be appreciated.
Some of my recent stuff is on this page. I don't want to re-post it so here's a link instead: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=121724.0
But's here's what I've done in the new year:

That's what you have done in the new year? That's great progress in a short space of time. I like the bard/rogue character playing the flute. I don't think I've seen that one before.
-
Nicely done, love the faces 8)
-
:o fab stuff!!!
-
really clean and bright style - love it.
-
Amazing work, very vibrant. Who makes the dwarf?
-
These are very nice and interesting figures!

A few more to add to my tally. I can paint pretty fast when I get going. My problem is that I change from genera to genera all the time. I'll paint a few battalions of Napoleonic's followed by a few dozen zombies and then 200 Romans... Right now it's fantasy figures again after a long time away.
Here's my efforts from the past few days. You can see more detail on my blog at: https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/01/goblins-ghoulies-and-their-friends.html

I'm really enjoying this return to one of my first wargaming loves and still getting things painted every day.
All the figures below are Reaper Bones. I painted one Bones figure last week and held my opinion but after painting these ones I can definitely say that I do like them. Inexpensive, they hold good detail and the material is easy on my brushes.

More from my painting desk. I'm getting plenty of figures painted and my small collection of fantasy is growing again. There was a time when I had hundreds of fantasy figures but these days my collection is about a two dozen or so.

I've painted up quite a bit of stuff since I last posted. I'm still on a fantasy jag and really enjoying just sitting and painting at this point in time. As a result I'm getting a lot of good painting done.
You can see a lot more pics and commentary regarding my painting at my blog @: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/
Some of this first lot are for Frostgrave:

Thanks for all the positive supports folks. I still have a long way to go.

Yes they are. I need to get more of them done.

A bit of a mix of figures to add to my growing collection. All of these figures are all from Eureka Miniatures and some will be for general gaming and some for my growing Faerie Army. It's not a very large army yet but I had to start somewhere and it started this year. I'm scouring the web for various manufacturers and anything fairyish that will fit my vision.
There's more pics and writing on my blog at: https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/01/a-little-bit-weird-wonderful.html

Greetings folks,
I've been continuing to paint figures for no other purpose that I wan't to paint them. I sort of have some goal in mind but it's vague and not really defined as yet. I wan't to make a Fae Army but unsure which direction to take. I do know that I want to avoid the "Wood Elf trope" sort of fae army that is common. I do want to incorporate those elements but I want to have elfin knights standing next to goblins that are standing next to giants that have sprites under their feet.
But, I'm not sure how to do that. Yet.
Here's my newest batch of figures:
If you want to see more pics of there are plenty of them as well as a lot of writing on my blog at:
https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/01/the-club-of-herakles-other-oddities.html

Another figure from Eureka:

Here's a censored version of this tiny chap:

And this is one that I'm working on. I made him 10 years ago and he's been sitting in a box waiting to be re-assembled and painted.

It's amazing how much you can get painted if you're really enjoying your painting time. I've only recently discovered audio books and I'm finding that they have increased my painting time a huge amount. I sit down, put an audiobook on my tablet and start painting. Then I get lost in the story for a few hours and just keep on painting. As a result I'm flying through the figures on my desk. Even better is that I'm enjoying the books and enjoying my painting.
Here's some more of my recent figures. There are more pics and relevant commentary on my blog at:

Does anybody know what these fellas are called or where to find them on the eureka website? I’ve been after some since they first showed off the greens a couple of years ago but never seen them for sale?

I don't know. I went to the shop front and I was shown these. But... If you copy/save the pic and attached it to an email I'm sure they'll be able to help.

Nice work!

Thanks to everyone for your positive comments. I'm really getting back into fantasy in a big way. I'm really enjoying painting and getting more, and more ideas as I continue. I'm looking at making a large faerie army and also getting things ready for Frostgrave and Rangers of Shadow Deep (I'm pretty much ready for RoSD now). I'm not sure what rules I'll use for larger games. I'm hoping that one game jumps out and grabs me. Initially Dragon Rampant is looking good.
Here's some of the latest pictures from my blog. There are a lot more pics and comments if you're interested.

Also your forest themed bases are outstanding!

Good grief. You are a painting machine sir and a talented one at that.
Great work

Great colors on the latest archer.
Is the shield design on the man-at-arms freehand? If so, that is some amazing skill!

Thanks for the positive feedback folks. I'm still going and should have a few more little chaps to add in the next day or so.

Thank you. It is free hand. I did the shields for an entire 15mm ancient Greek army. So I do have some experience.

This weekend I painted goblins. They're by Artizan Miniatures and I really like them. My mission now, is to get more from other manufacturers. I like this "fairy tale" style. If anyone can make any recommendations they'll be very welcome.

Swordisdrawn & dadlamassu ~ Thank you.
I made a bunch of satyrs from Eureka Miniatures. These are really nice figures that I found pretty easy to paint. I painted far more figures than appear in this pic and there's more pics on my blog @: https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/02/thinking-about-vanilla-and-satyrs.html
The posting on my blog also includes my ranting about trying to find a set of fantasy rules that suit me perfectly (like that's gonna happen!).

I like this "fairy tale" style. If anyone can make any recommendations they'll be very welcome.
Northumbrian Tin Soldier does some whimsical bits? Oakbound Studios perhaps too?
-
Goblins are excellent...hats by Mick Fleetwood? lol
Great thread
-
nice job on the artizan goblins and the satyrs.
I too like the more whimsical, 'folk tale', some vendors are putting into their fantasy lines now.
-
Some lovely painting in this thread - and your method (or wherever the mood takes you) is working. Will follow with interest.
Does anybody know what these fellas are called or where to find them on the eureka website? I’ve been after some since they first showed off the greens a couple of years ago but never seen them for sale?
Came to ask the same question, even trawled through the last couple of years of their facebook posts but can't find them on the store at all. :(
They're not officially up, but they are for sale.
As per the comments on the Facebook post:
https://www.facebook.com/eurekamin/photos/pcb.10154679747810509/10154679744665509/?type=3&theater
"They have been produced but are not on the web site yet. If you would like to buy some e-mail us at nicr@eurekamin.com.au and we can arrange something for you. Nic"

Yes. I've had a look. I have to consider postage to Australia so I need to shop and pick carefully before making any commitment.

Thanks. They are great figures. I did have one and couldn't remember where he came from. But I was reminded by Michal and DwarfCrypt.

Thank you.
Regarding those fae/fairies/pixies or whatever they're called - I'm lucky that I can drop in and buy them over the counter. But, as you mentioned, it's just a matter of dropping an email to Nic at Eureka.
-
Fantastic painting on the satyrs. As for your ongoing search for a fantasy game... have you looked at the Oathmark Campaign thread on LAF or the Osprey blog? That game seems to have a slightly different take on the way the armies are compiled.
Of course you could just house - rule an existing game to allow various troops across racial types while using the same familiar mechanics.
-
A bit of a slowdown in the painting whilst I made plastic Oathmark Elves. But I have been getting in some painting time and managed to get this lot done.
The centaurs mean that I now have a cavalry element for my Dragon Rampant army which I've now decided to call The Army of The King of Elfland. The other figures are for Frostgrave and Rangers of Shadow Deep.
As usual there'smore photo's on my blog at: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/02/spooky-and-hairy-bit-of-mix.html

That and the nice pair of eyes.
I like the almost monochromatic painting of the zombies. Great project.
-
Nicely painted models & interesting comments on the folk/fairy tale style. The goblins (thread page 4) are my favourite so far, they look as if straight out of Hobbit or even The Wizard of Oz.
-
My progress with this tread has slowed down recently. That does't mean that I've slowed down . What I have been up to is painting some larger units and a making bunch of terrain. I'll post some terrain pics at a later time but for now I have a bunch of Oathmark Elves that I've been painting. They came out okay but it is time consuming having to make up two dozen figures then paint and base them.
There's a couple more pics on my blog as well as my thoughts about making, painting and adding these figures to my growing army.

I agree they're missing a spark, but they look good good as a solid fae-aligned core. The animals are nice too.
-
Interesting take on Fae rather the usual High Elves. Nice touch and reference on the eyes. As for a spark, maybe some heroic individuals to break up the rank and file uniformity?
-
Beautiful regiment! I'm putting together some goblins and totally agree they are quite time consuming to put together and clean up! I missed a few mold lines ...
All worth it in the end though when you get a nice regiment like that!
Btw is that your movement tray under the 12 Elves?
-

Yes, I'm working of a few heroic figures a the moment.
Btw is that your movement tray under the 12 Elves?
The movement tray is just a blank drink coaster with some acrylic paint sponged onto it. You can get them at craft shops. Cheap as chips and very easy to make.

New additions to two of my armies: For my faerie army I now have the Erlking and his family. These figures are the Oathmark metal elf king and queen with a bit of conversion work done.
I've also made a werewolf unit for my evil guys army (goblins/orcs/evil doers... whatever). All of these figures are Reaper Bones and they do the job very well.

Great looking army there. I particularly love the werewolves.
I thought the fae/elves eyes were "blue within blue" in anticipation of the new Dune movie.
The Oathmark elves are rather static but do improve with cloaks (I bought resin ones as I don't have the adequate skill in making greenstuff ones) and by using arms from other plastic sets - I have used GB plastic Saxon arms and Fireforge knight arms. There are a few knight helmets that suit for some added variety.
-
Lookin’ good!

Some more figures that have been sitting on the desk for a few years found that their time had come during the week. These are Granbretanian Order of The Bull. Those of you who have read Moorcock's, History of the Runestaff will know who they are. I sculpted these figure for Eureka a few years back and I've been meaning to paint them for a long time. Well that time is now and I'm wondering why I took my time about it because they came out really nice.
As usual there are some more detailed pics on my blog at: https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/03/its-all-bull-im-tellin-ya.html

I also did some Oathmark Orc archers during the week (well they're "goblins" but I'm going to say they're orcs).

Nice painting (and sculpting!), particularly on the Bull Legion warrior's eyes.

Brilliant stuff. :o

I'm woefully lat to this thread, but I love this figure in the first post. Is it made from plastic GW empire parts?

Frostgrave figure (FGV128 - Sonancer & Apprentice):

Great stuff. That is the look I am aiming for with the Oathmark goblins when I get to them.

Thank you. The eyes are supposed to be gemstones so I tried to make them brighter that they should appear.

As Von Lucky said - Frostgrave Sonormancer and apprentice.
Great stuff. That is the look I am aiming for with the Oathmark goblins when I get to them.
Thank you. It's a pretty simple method - Basic block colours - heavy black wash - heavy sepia wash - pick out some details.
-
Fantastic painting :)
Love the order of the bull minis! Do eureka still sell them?

I think so, but you'll need to drop them an email as they don't appear on the web site.

A few new things:
I did these elf scouts. They are kit-bashed from Oathmark elves and Conquest medieval archers (I think). I like how they came out even if they do look a little bit hefty for your average elf. I also did this Reaper Bones ogre. He looks like a tough sort of fellow with a violent temperament.

Thanks Rick. I found a few more torsos in the bits box so I might make a few more.

Splendid. Lovely painting

I made some terrain for Rangers of Shadow Deep initially but I can see it getting plenty of use elsewhere in the future. It's made from card-stock and sit's nicely on my new terrain board (see the Workbench page).
I've also been working on some new figures but the majority of my time has been taken up with printing, cutting, and gluing for the past few days.

Ohh, I totally missed the Order Of The Bull chaps. Nice work. (I am currently re-reading the Hawkmoon books)
-
Excellent work, particularly on the printed terrain. 90% of the time I see stuff like that it's rather poorly done and not impressive. Your stuff looks crisp, clean, and very game-worthy.
-

Thanks Ragnar. I made them a few years back but these are the first ones I ever painted. The Hawkmoon books are great. Not a lot of substance to them but they are a good adventure with plenty of good ideas.

Thanks Elbows, I know what you mean. But if you take your time with it and try not to mix it with other types of terrain it can look really nice.

Here's another strange mix of things that I've painted during the past few days. The bugs have been sitting in a draw for a few years (they were part of a bug army I was putting together but I lost interest), the pigs are a kit bash using some left over armless torsos from back when I was sculpting with some arms from the Oathmark Goblin box. The undead guy is a GW thing from a bunch of sprues that I picked up recently.
These bugs will be use for Rangers of Shadow Deep as giant flies.

Those bugs look great! I must get or devise something similar as stand-ins for low-level dungeon encounters (stirges, fire beetles, etc.).
-
Agreed - those bugs are awesome. And those pig-headed folk are ever so slightly un-nerving.
-
Looking through such beautiful painting makes it hard to pick up a brush knowing my figures will never look half that good. That's really marvelous work.
-

Thanks Hobgoblin. They're 15mm sci-fi bugs from Khurasan Miniatures.

I neve thought about the pigs helmets that way but I guess you're right when I think about it.

Thank you, but it's just a matter of practice. I don't have any of my earlier figures anymore but I know for a fact that they were pretty rough.
-
Well, I have plenty of time on my hands so I may as well keep painting. I'm still really getting into my renewed love of fantasy (although I never fell out of love with it... just didn't play any games for 30 years). These figures have nothing in common with each other. Just a bunch of stuff I wanted to paint.
There are some more pics on my blog and some ruminations about what I might do - https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/04/a-bunch-of-stuff-with-nothing-in-common.html

Thank you DeafNala. Yes, I picked up that wolf just the other day. Who says love at first sight doesn't exist?
Very nice indeed
Thank you very much.

Excellent things here. The cleric is particularly good.
-
The wolf and the cultist are quite striking. Very nice work!

I started making some new terrain for Frostgrave but I ended up making ruins that I can use in Frosgrave and other games. When I say that I mean that I decided to not apply snow to the pieces. I did that on the earlier pieces I made and I think it limitls they use. I'll just sprinkle baking soda on the new ones when I need to. The pieces are pretty simple and I have enough to populate a 3'x3' or 4'x4' table.

Now that I've finished writing my zombie apocalypse rules it's time to get back to some painting and fantasy gaming (there's a limit to how much zombie brains a man can take). So I've kept busy on the paint table and managed to get a bunch of stuff done.
There's a couple more pics on my blog at: https://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/06/another-fantasy-interlude.html

Good work on the new additions :)

Good stuff mate!

I'm still getting the odd figure painted here and there. Not at the pace I was doing them at the start of the year but I'm plugging on.
Yesterday I finished off a few elf hero/character types.
This first one is a kit bash using a Conquest Games medieval archer body, his shield arm is from their Norman Knights box. He sword arm and head are from the Oathmark elf box. His cloak is from the Fireforge Teutonic Knight box. He came out okay for a bunch of odd spare bits and I think I'll make him his own company of spears so he can lead them into battle.

This one is an eM4 figure. An old Grenadier figure I think. This one is great. A lovely clean sculpt with lots of character. I really enjoyed painting him. I'm not very good at painting chequered patterns but I gave it a try for his shawl and it looks okay. I'm pretty happy with this figure and I really like his spear. I hope I can get more of the figures in this range in the future.

Nice work. I really like the musician's tunic and trim pattern.
-
Wow! Great work! Especially the plaid and the tunic trims. Some great ideas there, excellent color choices and good kitbashing as well.
-
Thanks for the positive comments guys.
This week I decided to paint some knights. These a Perry HYW figures that I painted to give them a faerie look. I painted some Reaper wolves too. I wrote a bunch of stuff on my blog about my reasons for using the Perry figures. I did a couple of small terrain pieces too.

The Knights turned out really well. Good choice on using Perry figures. I like the green wash on the armor. What did you use?

Thanks Syrinx0 - The base colour is Vallejo airbrush aluminium with a heavy wash of the basic GW green wash (I don't know the name of it). Then I made a pale metallic green and dry brushed it on all of the armour. BTW: I didn't use an airbrush for the aluminium. Just a regular brush.
-
Very nice work on these. Great to see the Perry knights in this context - and yes, the armour is very striking.

Great additions 8)

I'm getting back into painting after a short hiatus where I delved, once again, into the realm of zombie apocalypse. I'm trying to get through the grey plastic pile whilst, at the same time, putting more figures on the table. They all came out looking decent enough and I'm planning another game of solo Dragon Rampant in the next few days.

I got a nice looking Reaper Jaberwock. This is the Bones version (the one that can't stand under its own weight). I had to do a bit of work to get it to stay upright but in the end it came out okay. You can read about my thoughts on my blog at:

great stuff.
-
"... decent enough"? :o
These are, if I may use an obvious and overused word, fantastic. The Jabberwock is pretty amazing but that troll is a fabulous piece of work. The militant satyr and the Elven guard are pretty blinking cool too.
-
Jabberwock looks fantastic, lovely basing! The others are great, too. :o

Snicker snack!

I needed a commander/hero for my medieval troops to give them a fantasy feel. So I made this guy. The griffin is Reaper Bones and the knight is Perry. You can have a read of my blog for more details about him. Link here: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/07/wing-commander.html
I've named him Baron von Bach-Sachenkrach.

Here's a few more things that I've painted up during the past week or so to add to my various fantasy armies. I've also spent quite a bit of time putting together plastic figures in preparation for a painting Frenzy!!!!. Or something like that.

Excellent additions

After playing a solo game of Saga, Age of Magic I decided to make a new army. I had a whole bunch of GW plastic ghosts sitting around, that I picked up on the cheap, and decided these would be a great starting point. I thought I could get these done fairly quickly and that I could get an entire warband done within a week (that's 8pts for Saga or 24 pts for Dragon Rampant). So here's my start.
If you're wondering just how cheap I got these GW figures then have a look at my blog and be prepared to be stunned (I was).

Really nice work.

I've added a bit more things to my current desire to build an army of the dead. I'm finding these figures are very easy to paint. Just a couple of base colours, a couple of washes, some dry brushing and a bit of work on the bases. There's not really much to them but... They're coming out really nice with minimal effort.

Very effective looking - as you said, it’s amazing what can be achieved with a couple of washes/dry brushing
:)
-
Really love how those wraiths turned out.
-
Thanks again got the positive encouragement.
I've finished my undead to the point where I can put a large skirmish army on the table for Dragon Rampant or Saga AoM. Because of the release of the new GW collector series, I now have about 60 to 70 odd extra of the ghost figures that I'm using as my basic troops. These are easy to paint so I hope I can get them done soon so that I can field a nice big full sized army.
Anyway, here's the newest additions to my collection:

Nice work. Like the Skeleton Cav,

Here are the last pieces (for the moment) of my undead army. I will add more at a later stage but, for now this is it. I also made a small Special Terrain piece for Saga AoM. This is to go with my Great Kingdoms list but could also be used as a special scenario piece.

I am a bit confused how one can "finish" a tabletop project - I thought they went on forever or is that just because I'm too lazy and unfocused? :D
All joking aside, I love your thread. So many wonderfully painted minis and great little battle reports.
-
What he said, what is this finished of which ye speaketh.
Nice body of work, well done.
-
Ummm... How about, "sort of finished?" I did add the caveats "for the moment" & "I'll add more later."
::)
-
A great terrain piece. Very nice

brilliant ! :-*

Adding more to my growing fantasy collection, I painted some orcs riding on deformed looking boars. They're from Mantic and I think they're called Gor Riders. They came out looking okay but I didn't enjoy putting them together or painting them. I overcame my serious arachnophobia and painted some GW spiders (because they don't look like spiders).
As usual, there's more pictures on my blog as well as some pics of my new permanent little wargaming table. Here: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2020/08/its-been-busy-week-in-my-wargaming-life.html

It's been a whole month since I posted anything on this thread. I have been painting but I turned my efforts to 15mm historicals for a while. However, I painted up a range of fantasy stuff over the past week and here it is. And, just for you, dear reader, I painted up some more Granbretanian Vulture Legion.

Loving the Vulture legion.

Thanks Batty Coalhouse and Ragnar. They're not easy to paint and they are a labour of love.

I thought I'd finished painting undead but it's October and it seem that this is now the month for all things ghostly and ghoulish (because we have to have a whole month of pushing sales ahead of Halloween, I guess). However, I digress... I thought I was done but then GW released those magazines/rules that come with a sprue of figures or paints/dice/modeling toys, etc... and I found myself with some of these ghost things.
I got two sprues but I have no idea where they'll fit into my army of the restless dead. But they look really nice and they were pretty easy to paint. I hope I did them justice.

I did these over that past couple of days. Eagles (obviously) and the other thing is an umber hulk.

Really love the Umber hulk. That is a great scuplt

After looking at cavalry options for my elves I decided to make some chariots as an alternative. I used some 4Ground mdf Egyptian chariots to make these along with Perry HYW horses and Oathmark elf infantry. They came out looking okay and I'm pretty happy with them.

Hello there Melnibonean, I see you used the heraldry of Earendil on those chariots. My plan is to do the same thing, but with Fingolfin's crest on this banner. Any tips for getting it in that great quality?
-
Great chariots mate!
-
I'd say those chariots came out significantly better than "ok".
-
Loving those ballistae!
I'm always a fan of non brown wooden war machines, and that green definetily pops!
did you shave the skull and replace it with a shield?
how do you like that particular model?
-
Thanks for all the positive comments folks.

Hello Thronde, I took the image and created a sheet full of the Silmaril image in several different sizes & printed them in high definition. I just cut them out carefully and glue them in place. I then give them several coats of varnish. Sort of like decoupage.

Hello Luigi, I did shave off the skull and replaced it with a standard from the Oathmark elf infantry boxed set.
The model itself is pretty good. You get two in a pack for $10 (in Australia) so that's $5 each, which is good value.
-
thank you for taking the time to reply.
I like your painting style: your miniatures have a very old school and "comfy" look to them that really makes me want to play.
I'm also a sucker for green/white or blue/white colour schemes and you pulled hboth of them masterfully.
If we weren't half a world away, I wouldn't have minded organizing a game or two.
-
Excellent job on the Chariots.... those work VERY well.

Thanks gibby64. I was a bit unsure about them after i constructed them but they worked out nicely in the end.

I decided to get some plastic Oathmark dwarves. I don't really like them all that much. I really like the metal "character" figures and they inspired me to get the plastics, but they just don't compare to the metal figures. I don't like my shield design either. I was feeling very very short on inspiration to do anything better. As it is, I also decided to re-base the metal figures I did last week and they look better for it. I like the king's base.
Maybe I should just stick to elves.

I think they look great mate! Surprisingly, I prefer the plastic to the metal. But I really like the personalization possible with the plastics. And I really like your shield design. Simple, yet iconic.
-
I think your Dwarves are awesome! Well done!
-
I eant such elf chariots and ballistas as well! Very nice conversions.
The dwarven shields are beautiful!

Thanks for the positive replies guys. Maybe I've been a bit harsh on myself (and the dwarves).

Nice work on the Dwarfs. The one second from the right looks like a hobbitized James Cosmo!
Those spooky things look great as well.

Before I post this I need to give credit to BZ, because I saw his post and I copied it completely and utterly.
For a while I've been wantings some elfish cavalry. I looked around and the prices were really prohibitive to get any decent figures sent to Australia. I've been looking at conversions but I was unsure what to do. Then I saw BZ's post and I thought, "Perfect!" So I stole his idea without any shame at all. I really like how these figures came out. As far as I'm concerned they make perfect heavy elf cavalry.

Superb, especially the elves and the cavalry.

Thanks for the positive replies folks. These are some of my favorite figures out of all the stuff I've done this year.
-
It's been a while since I posted to this thread. The world got busy and my painting slackened off a bit. However, I have done some stuff and and I painted up some new elves. I wanted to get away from the usual "elfish colour pallets" blue, white, greens and greys and go for something different. So I went with a bright sun motif.
I also had a think about what kind of fantasy games I want to play. I came to the conclusion I want my elves and orcs for big battles. This line of thinking got me to thinking about re-basing. So I've been doing a lot of re-basing.
Here's the new guys:

Part of my re-basing involved my recently posted Heavy Elf Cavalry. I painted up another 4 riders and raised them up to a larger unit of 12 figures.

Wow, love the elf infantry. Lovely subtle kitbash with the veiled faces and they look great ranked up.
-
Oh wow, they both look fantastic! Good choice to try some unusual colours for the infantry, they work well. What kind of decal did you use for the shields?
-
Very nice color scheme on the infantry!
-
Absolutely brilliant stuff that I totally plan to copy as soon as my plastics arrive!
However, I couldn't resist thinking I should do some Dull Elves by contrast.
-
Great work mate, they look excellent.
-
top notch.
great animated poses in the cavalry.
-
Nice work on both sets.
-
Very nice. Great painting and kitbashing.
-
Thanks again for all the positive feedback. I have a pretty good sized elfin army now. I also have a good sized goblin army to fight them but I think I might have to increase their numbers in the new year and get them all ready for some big battles in 2021.
Oh wow, they both look fantastic! Good choice to try some unusual colours for the infantry, they work well. What kind of decal did you use for the shields?
Neunfinger, I made the shield decals myself... But they're not decals. I'm going to do a tutorial for how to make them on my blog soon. I've now created a few units using my easy method. They're really easy and cheap they look pretty nice and you can do whatever design you want.
-
Looking very much forward to the tutorial!
-
Second on the tutorial!
-
I third the tutorial :-)
-
How do you properly size the shields when you do the photoshopping?
-
Wow those look fantastic!

Thanks again guys for the positive comments.
This last week I've been working on some of the plastic Frostgrave Barbarians. These are really nice set and they go well with their metal figures. I bought them a while back and they've been gathering dust on my work bench but now they have some paint and I think they came out looking nice.

Looking good!
-
Great job on those.
My favourite of the Frostgrave kits I think. So much character squeezed into those components.
-
Like Richard, I’m a big fan of the FG barbarians, and you’ve done a great job with them.
Nice work especially on the face paint, and the shields
:)
-
Barbarians are one of the best Frostgrave kits, great job on them!
-
Great work, especially the face paint and/or tattoos.
-
Nice work.
One of them has a distinct younger James Cosmo look.
-
Great :).
-
Thanks for the positive comments, guys. I'll have to get stuck in to the remaining figures.
-
Fine exemplars of barbaric splendor!
-
A very nice kit. Great paint job.

My first figures for 2021. I'm going to play some solo Frostgrave so I got inspired to finish off some figures that have been sitting on the workbench and waiting for some love. I did a little bit of conversion work and in the end these figures came out okay.

Lovely painting on those wizards and demon.

I'm more interested with skirmish games at the moment and that means doing a wide variety of various stuff. This is what I've done lately. I bought these just the other day and pretty much got to painting them straight away. I really enjoyed painting these.

I've been doing quite a bit of terrain and other scratch building things recently. While I've been doing that I've managed to splash a bit of paint around here and there and got a few more figures finished. Most of them are from a Manic Terrain Crate that I picked up last week. Good terrain and a bunch of figures that vary from really nice to somewhat underwhelming.

Thank you all, for all of your kind replies. I've really been enjoying getting back into fantasy games and seeing all the interesting figures, creatures and monsters that I've missed out on for the past bunch of years.
I've had a pretty productive weekend and managed to get a few more things painted after a visit to a (not really local) games shop. It's nice to grab a few figures that really make you want to paint them so you can see the finished result.

I posted on another thread but I'll post them here too because this is the main thread for all my fantasy stuff.
Some Snakemen from Northstar. Let's say: They're not my favorite figures.

My son has these snakmen. I must say, that I like them, especially the heads are looking good. But...
- The wide stand is a pain, if you want to use them on 25mm bases (for example for Oathmark), because they are ment to be used on 32mm.
- The mould lines are much worse, then on the other Northstar sets.
- The unusual half-ball joints at the arms are a hell to assamble.
So after they are assembled, I like them, while I was assembling them, I hated them. :)

I agree on all points BZ. I didn't mind assembling them, in fact I quite enjoyed it, but I really did not enjoy painting them. Not at all. Having said that, after painting the figures do look nice even though there's still something not quite right about them and I can't put my finger on it.
(I have a few more on the table now waiting to be finished).
-
The Snakemen were a huge miss for me, along with the Gnolls on some parts. After watching a lot of reviews and seeing lots of sprue pictures, etc...I just think they weren't on par with the other Frostgrave kits. I appreciate anyone who does a good job on them though.
-
I'm going to need a Darkseed plant (I think that's what it's called) for the Rangers of Shadowdeep sometime in the campaign I'm playing. I had this sitting on my desk. It's from Reaper Bones and looks the part. The tentacles/roots are just greenstuff rolled and twisted. They came out okay.
I made a fountain too for the next scenario.

Great additions to your collection, that should see a lot of use.

Go right ahead. I have no shame at all when it comes to copying someone else's good idea.

IThanks. I hope they get more than one use. The fountain can be used for various games.
-
My newest additions. The black figures are Shadows from WizKids. Nothing special but they're quite nice for what they are and they can represent several different fiends as required. The two nuns are the Frostgrave Sigilist wizard and apprentice set. A nice set but somewhat unusual. And some more snakemen.

Nice painting, I especially like the sigilists/nuns. The wizkids stuff is a bit like the reaper bones models, I think. They're nice for what they are (that is affordable/cheap) but a bit of a chore to clean up prior to painting.
-
Great work mate!

gosh great stuff.
love the dark seed thing - nice work on that.
and I actually like the Roper!

The sigilist/nuns are good just a bit unusual. WizKids/Bones... They're good for those creatures and things when you don't want to spend a lot of money on them.
Great work mate!
Thanks Rick.

I just got caught up. To be sure I didn't miss anything, I started on page 1. It was a GLORIOUS experience. You have created a treasure trove of WONDERFUL creations. VERY WELL DONE!

Thank you, although I have a long way to go to equal your own outstanding project.

I'm trying to keep up a steady flow of figures and creatures. This lot come from a variety of makers: Oathmark (the elf lord), the archer is from Mantic, the leaches are Reaper Bones and the furniture is a mix of Mantic and Wizkids. I'll probably take a rest from fantasy soo to focus on 15mm ancients. Until that time I'll keep working on them.

Next off the work bench are these little people. The barbarian has a very familiar look (what that square-cut black mane, etc...) and is from Reaper Bones. I did a bit of conversion work on him because I didn't like his sword. The she-elf is also Reaper and was a really nice figure to work on.

Those are very nice. I like the conversion, it looks quite natural. Your painting on the Bones figure (or both if the elf is also Bones) shows how well they can paint up.
-
Love the elves - great colour choices. Very inspiring!
-
Nice paintjob. We have that elf too, its a beautiful sculpt!

Thanks Pattus Magnus. It's a nice figure and it was easy to work on it.

Thanks very much James. They are nice figures and that makes it enjoyable to paint them.

It's been a long while since I posted anything on this thread but I've started painting fantasy things again so I thought this is the place to post them.
Just a couple of quick ones. Not my favorite figures but I needed them in a hurry so they came back to the front of the paint desk and they got their comeuppance. Both figures are Reaper Black Bones.

They may not be your favorite figures, but they are certainly well painted.

We're again locked down in Melbourne so I ordered a bunch of critters to paint. All of these are Reaper Bones. I was expecting the ettin to be a bigger than he is but he's a great figure nonetheless. The ogre is up to the usual Bones standard (meaning that he looks great and is real value for money). I have a special purpose for the bat swarms and I have another on its way to me in the post.

I decided that I needed to clean up some things off my painting desk. These big guys are both from Mantic. I got the pair in a Dungeon Master's Terrain Crate. They're both okay but nothing special. One is a zombie troll (I think) and the other is either an ogre, troll or massive orc (I'm not sure which). The undead are from GW. I got about a hundred of these figures pretty cheap over 18 months and they've become the core of my undead hoard.

I bought a box of Oathmark Dwarf Infantry last year. I painted some of them and posted them on this tread at the time. The remaining figures sat on my desk for about a year and I finally finished them the other day. They're nice figures and they were enjoyable to paint however he metal figures in the range are far superior to the plastics in my opinion.

They look great!

Excellent work as usual mate!
-
Well done
-
Beautiful work! So I admit, I skipped to the end without reading all the middle bits... Did you ever try a game? I'm a big fan of Kings of War - large scale, rank-and-file, very simple rules, plays relatively quickly, and still lots of room for strategy. I think the basic rules are free over at Mantic, and you can get the army lists at easyarmy.com.
I also like Vanguard (also Mantic, also at easyarmy.com), but it's skirmish scale, with 5-10 models per side.
Cheers!
-
Thanks for the positive responses folks.

Yeah. I've tried a few and I made my own solo rules for big battles which work okay. I looked at KoW but I'm unsure about them because the figures need to be individual and I'm not sure if they would work solo.

I added a few more units to my army of the dead. I don't think these are most inspiring models but they look okay and they'll work for what I bought them for. They're all from the Mantic, Kings of War range. I riders are from the undead sect/faction, I think the rats are from their ratty people lot, and I'm unsure about the gargoyles. To be honest, I don't really care what they are supposed to be. I'll just use them for what I want.

The ghostly riders look A-OK to me.
-
Those dwarves look amazing, and the gargoyles suitably "stony"
-
I like your ghost riders as well as the other work!
-
Thanks for the positive comments folks. I'm glad you like what I've made.
I've added a couple of new units to my army of evil doers. I bought a box of Wargames Atlantic goblins and a box of Oathmark Goblin riders. They came out okay and I did a bit of kit bashing on both boxes. I've only painted a single unit from each box so far but I'll get the rest done in the next few days.

I'm not sure what you've done differently, but you have those oathmark wolves looking pretty good. Maybe it's the dark colour scheme? Anyhow, I quite like them.

Yeah, those Wargs do look better than usual. Not as chunky looking. Great work! I really like both the Osthmark and Wargames Atlantic sculpts for that Angus McBride Tolkien vibe.
-
They do say black is slimming, so maybe there is something to the idea that the colour scheme makes the wolves look less tubby.
In any case, I like your work on both units. I haven’t picked up the WA goblins yet, but yours and some of the others here on LAF have me tempted!
-
I really like those orcs.
-
My first post for the new year and it's more orcs and goblin wolf riders. I decided to rebase my orcs, which are really Wargames Atlantic Goblins. The models are weird to put together but their faces are really nice and they look great when painted. I'm not a big fan of the Oathmark wolf riders. They look okay and they'll do the job. The riders are okay but it's the wolves that I have issues with (and I know I'm not alone in this). I did this second lot as archers.

You certainly brought out the best from those models, despite the shortcomings in how they were designed- they look great!

After a long hiatus from doing Fantasy stuff I finally go back on the wagon. I recently painted up some centaurs and fauns from Eureka Miniatures as well as some other figures, which prompted me to get out my woodland army to have a look at it. I didn't realise that this little army had grown as a slowly added a figure here and a figure there. Anyway, here it is.

I made a new Elf Queen using the Footsore AEthelfaed figure. I already have an elfish queen but this little lady looks far more fierce (as a Faerie Queen should).

The Army of the Black Crag ~ I decided to muster my army of evil doers to see what I had and get an ide of how big the army is. It mostly sits in boxes so I've had no idea of how it looks on the table. So her eit is.

Excellent job on those! The Army of the Black Crag looks ready to spread havoc! I like the colour palette you chose and the basing complements the figures well.
-
Hell yeah!
I had a more detailed look at the horde on your blog. I'm really rather taken with those banner designs - they're very cleverly done. The scorpion riders have come out brilliantly. And it's always a joy to behold a full battle line of orcish infantry. I was also interested to see that those old Copplestone half-orcs scale fairly well with the OM goblins. Hmmm...
The Cracked Rock boys were going to have a pop at them lot from the Black Crag until Captain Shagbag did a quick head count.
"One, two... ummm... some, errr... loads! I think we're going to need more lads..."
-
That's a great force.

I've never been sure about the basing. Thank you for you reassurance.

Thanks. The Coplestone half orcs work well. There are a few mixed in and they pretty much undetectable. There are 10 banners. I devised a crude orcish counting system so each cohort is numbered 1 to 10.
That's a great force.
Thank you.

Quite an impressive horde. Brilliant work!

I painted up a bunch of Norther Riders (or as I like to call them "Not the Riders of Rohan) a while back and this week I decided to finish them. I initially bought two boxes of Gripping Beast Goth Noble Cavalry and painted up one box. The second box had been sitting in my cupboard for about 18 months and I finally took it out, assembled the figures and painted them. And here they are: 24 riders in various unit configurations:

When I recently poste my orcish army I noted on my blog that the the army was missing a large centre piece monster. So I decided to do something about that situation and found them a suitably nasty beast to help them in battle. This is The Wyrm Gormagundr and he is here to oppress all that is good and to take the riches of those that he destroys. Because that's what dragons do!
He's a Reaper Bones model that I did some modification on.
More pics and stuff on my blog. Here: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2023/05/the-wyrm-gormagundr.html (http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com/2023/05/the-wyrm-gormagundr.html)

I quite agree.

Nice work on that wyrm.

Thanks folks. Please excuse me for not thanking you individually. I don't usually got this many replies.

And as soon as I made an lovely dragon for my orcish army I had and idea for a Dragon Rampant scenario which involves a dragon that makes the last one look like a puppy dog. This beast is huge and it's for a specific game that I'm getting ready for my club's open day. Some info about the scenario on my blog at the link below. I'm still developing the game so it's a bit vague on detail.

The dragon looks quite impressive! The knight looks great too, but he had better have some tricks up his sleeve.

Thank you. It is a real monster but it should be a pretty even fight. I'll be testing out my game tomorrow night.

I've written a scenario for Dragon Rampant for a participation game at my club's upcoming open day. It involves one very big dragon that makes up a 36 point warband. Against him is a adventurer party of 6 D&D type characters that also make up a 36 point warband. I d some play-testing of the game last week and it worked out well. If you're interested have a look at my blog at the link below for more details.

It's the end of the month and I have a few new additions to add to my fantasy lists. I spent the majority of Medieval May playing mainly large battles at my club but, being a mind for spears, swords and shields I also got drawn back to fantasy stuff (as my most recent posts on this thread will attest). I decided to build up my elfin army as well as making a start on a Reaper Bones set that I picked up last years called Hirelings and Henchmen (or vice versa).
The elves are Oathmark but they're a mix of the light elf infantry torso and the heavly elf infantry limbs. I saw this combo on a blog and decided to copy it because I thought they looked great (apologies to whoever I copied, I can't remember who you are). The other three guys are from the afore mentioned set from Reaper. They're nicely sculpted figures and very well cast. There are another 10 figures in the set which I'll get around to painting in the near future.

Those elves look absolutely great! 8)
And the henchmen look suitable for a whole range op applications. I think I have the overburdened guy in metal and he's quite a tall miniature. He came with two guys carrying a litter with a chest on it, and they too were quite tall. Might be the integrated bases though.
How do they match up next to the Oathmark Elves?

Thanks Daeothar. I could be the bases on the Reaper figures. They are really thick but I trimmed these ones down to about half thickness.

Just a quick one. Finished off a few dwarven archers that were sitting on my desk for a long while. They fill out my little warband but now I'm considering if I should build a whole dwarf army. I'd like to but I'm of two minds considering that it would mean painting 200 odd dwarves over the next few months.

Really like these! Remind me very much of the dwarves from the Rankin/Bass 1977 animated production of The Hobbit, especially the bare-headed fellow.

A couple of weeks back I posted about a scenario I designed for Dragon Rampant. I play tested it over a few weeks and the scenario works really well and should be getting published in a well known magazine some time in the future. Anyhow, I decided I needed a couple more figures for the scenario because I'm going to to be putting it on as a participation game at my clubs' open day in a few weeks time. I've added a paladin on foot for a dungeon themed game, a new sorceress and a wizard as an alternative to the sorceress.

I bought a box of Oathmark Orcs to add to my large goblin army. I wasn't 100% happy with the weapons in the set so I decided to do a bit of conversion work using a bunch of left over pieces from some Perry Wars of the Roses and European Mercenaries boxes. They came out nicely and I intend to buy another box and do the same with them. So here are the Company of the Red Hand.

Brilliant conversions and paintwork! The bill and crossbow kit bashes work really well. I was surprised to read on your blog that you'd made the banner from plasticard - it looks very effective (and must help to keep the banner pole intact in play!).

Great work, really looking the part.

I love what you have done there, those are vicious looking orcs! I always enjoy seeing how people have kitbashed the various plastic kits to make unique units.

Thanks Hobgoblin. It's a pretty easy way to make banners. Most of the time I just use very thin plasticard and bend in some movement and creases but you can always add a bit of greenstuff for more detail. Also, the attach to the pole very easily.
Great work, really looking the part.
Thanks GG

It's a great way to put those great weapons from the Perry sets to a good use.

A couple of weeks back I painted up a unit of elf archers and this week I did a unit of spearmen to go with them. They're a mix of several sets - Oathmark light and regular elf infantry with shields from Wargames Atlantic Dark age Irish. Together with the archers they make up a nice little bow and spear regiment.

Thanks guys. I really like the Oathmark figures too (I have a few hundred). They might be a bit generic but they look the way I like and they're great for conversions as well as filling the ranks for huge armies.
-
I've had a slowdown with my painting over the past couple of weeks but I did manage to get a few things painted and added to my armies. I also managed to build a bunch of plastic dwarves and a some undead that are going to have to wait in line before they get some brush action.
