Title: Saxon Project!
Post by: Phil Portway on January 15, 2020, 12:47:07 PM: For a basic Sword & Spear 400 point army, I will need 230 Foot and 20 Cavalry.

I have some painted ATM possibly 20 - 40 in my Crusader army, but I have to make, paint and base!

The project is :133 Warlord Saxon foot. I have 60 Victrix Saxon foot on their way. I will mix and match the both.

I have one unit of saxon/ Rus Cavalry already, so this will make another unit and the two extra will be a General base! Cut and cleaned off sprues all 64 figures and 16 Thegns, for commanders & to bulk out to 80 figures, so making four 20 man units. The units will be kit bashed with some Fire Forge, Gripping Beast too!

I will be mixing in some Victrix when they arrive.

I will be using Steel Spears and metal weapons, I think these are from GB.

I have cut off the weapons and drilled the hands on the Victrix figures. All standard figures, majority now with metal weapons. There is one figure missing, but it is a 20 man unit, he kept falling over and knocking figures down!

You can tell the quality of Victrix over the Warlord figures!

Yep, must admit, if I were doing this, I wouldn’t bother with the Warlord product.
Comparing the Warlord Saxons to the Victrix Saxons, is like putting a Reliant Robin alongside a Range Rover and saying ‘well, they’re both cars...’ I’m afraid there’s a vast difference in quality - sadly all too apparent when you put the highly detailed, beautifully moulded Victrix parts onto the rudimentary, poorly detailed Warlord bodies... :(

Problem is I have 133 Warlord figures which I won in a raffle. Would never have bought them if I had a choice!

Victrix and Gripping beast for any "fillers" or new units once this lot are done!

Having bought Warlord Saxons/Vikings and then sourcing Gripping Beast I threw my Warlord stuff at ebay...now have to think about adding some Victrix stuff into my Dark Age armies ;)

Mostly Warlord Games with some Victrix. Most shields hand painted, with a couple of the Warlord decals.

All 28mm Various makes, Warlord Games, Victrix, Conquest Games and Gripping Beast. Bit of kit bashing involved and even a GB Arab in there somewhere. Some scenery and cart base done . All for Sword and Spear Rules. Also last two units on workbench.

So, Since March 17th when I started this project, I have painted 264 Foot (which includes Agincourt Foot Knights) and 22 Cavalry. The odd 4 foot & 2 cavalry are command bases. Not a bad output and a 28mm army on table in 7 weeks! Will post the Army when completely finished.
