Here's the plan, I'm putting together a VG rifle platoon from the Bloody Bucket Pint sized Campaign from Too Fat Lardies.
It's a green platoon with a sprinkling of vets from the Eastern front.
I'm hoping then to cover the Sturm platoon which will have a lot of automatic weapons and then eventually a standard platoon from the CoC rulebook.
As usual I like to start a thread to help motivate myself to get stuff done and I've managed to complete a squad this week. It'll be slow progress because I have Peninsular and Ancient projects on the go as well.
The figures are all Warlord games using the plastic 'greatcoat' boxed set and some of the metal 'winterised' Germans.
-
Superb! :o :-*
-
Nice clean painting. They're looking really good so far. Getting the whole platoon together will look even better.
-
Nice job on those Jeff :)
-
They look great, looking forward to seeing these progress.
-
Nice change from your normal painting
Looking forward to your progress

Very nicely done 8)
-
Nice! Smooth and precise painting. Good job.
-
Very nice work.

Very nice work Jeff! Am currently painting up some of the Empress late war / cold weather Germans, quite possibly also with the Bloody Bucket pint sized campaign in mind. I reckoned either the whole platoon is in snowbound conditions or it isn't - and if it isn't you really wouldn't want to stand out like that. But each to his own ...

-
Thanks for commenting guys, I'm painting Ancients at the moment but I'm hoping to get the next squad of these done soon.
The Rifle platoon will consist of 3 squads and a platoon commander with 3 rifle grenadiers, 28 figures in all so it shouldn't take long even for a slow painter like me :)
The Bloody Bucket campaign happened before the heavy snowfall but my battlefields will be snow covered (coz I like the look) hence the snow covered bases.
-
Neat!!! :-* :-*
-
Nice painting - the uniform greens and whites go well together.
-
Terrific work.
-
Like these. Very crisp painting.
-
Nice work :o

Thanks for commenting guys, I'll post some more photos as the collection develops :)

I'll take a look, cheers :)

Oh man, they are awesome! I thought you were talking about the terrain range he did, I didn't realise he'd branched out into minis too? :)

Second squad done, a mixture of Warlord and Empress figures.
I like how they've turned out though I'm not sure if the Empress figures are supposed to be wearing white outfits. I painted them as if they were anyway and I'm happy with the result
-
And my progress so far in a snowy setting :)
-
:-*
-
Brilliant!

Are the Empress figures the MG 42 team ?
they look great :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Yes Colin, it's the two figures in the middle of the top two photos :)
-
Lovely work on those. You are in luck Jeff - the Empress figures are wearing reversible suits and one side was white :-)

They look just wonderful Jeff! 8)

Brilliant!

Third squad completed, just the Officer and 3 Rifle Grenadiers to go before the Rifle platoon is finished, next stage will be painting enough figures to take the platoon to a standard platoon from the CoC rule book.

I’m just starting the same project...
https://doctorphalanx.blogspot.com/2020/02/chain-of-command-my-1944-ardennes.html
...so this is a great inspiration but it has also highlighted a quandary.
I collected most of the figures, bought a white mat, and started making some snow-laden scenery years ago, but I’ve recently invested in a stack of MDF buildings which I might also want to use for Summer 1940 so I’m reluctant to plaster these buildngs in snow.

Blame it on poor insulation, the snow has melted.
Just use a slightly darker and bluer palette.
-
Clear acetate sheets (cheap as chips on amazon) cut to the shape of the roofs of the building and sprayed white. Attach the acetate to the buildings using white tac (as opposed to blue tac) and then put white tac on areas like window sills to give that snowy effect :)
-
I think there are probably a few ways of temporarily ‘capping’ building to give a snow-laden effect and that’s the most I’d want to do.
I’ve been wondering about how prevalent white clothing was. A quick check in books and online seems to show most soldiers standing in the snow in relatively dark clothing despite this making them obvious targets...
-
Of course white coveralls on a snowy background is not very photogenic.
^___^

Back in the late 1970s, the Irish Defence Forces were keen to show the British media that they were doing their bit to stop IRA incursions across the border into "Norn Iron" and arranged a press day to show off some maneouvres in some fields near the border. After a briefing, in which the officer emphasised that his men would be wearing camouflage combats and so would be difficult to spot in the fields and woods, the journos were taken by coach to the site of the "event". Unfortunately, it had snowed heavily during the night and the poor old brown and green Saighdiúr were highlighted against the white background. Things were not helped apparently when the Telegraph journo (ex-public school, ex-Oxbridge, ex-Guards) publicly thanked the officer in charge of them for laying on the snow so as to make his men easier to spot.

Platoon commander and 3 Grenadiers done completing the 28 figure platoon as shown in the Bloody Bucket scenario book from TFL.
-
Next stage will be to add enough figures to field a standard platoon from the CoC rule book which means adding 9 rifleman and a Pzshreck team.
-
Lovely :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
what is going on with the rifles, bayonet sheaths?

No Colin, grenade launchers. 3 for the platoon, I imagine they were issued out to the sections but I'm not sure :)
-
Very nice, Jeffrey, very nice 8)
-
I recently saw a post on the organisation of Volksgrenadiers, it might have been on the TFL forum. I will try to dig it out.
Ah

In the Zug, at HQ level three schutzen with grenade launchers.
-
Nice crisp painting there Jeff.
-
Thanks for commenting guys, much appreciated :)
-
Lovely painting
-
So as planned I'm upgrading the Volksgrenadier platoon up to a standard infantry platoon from the CoC rulebook. This requires 9 new rifleman and a Pzshreck team, and I made a start on those figures this week.
1 Empress, 1 WG plastic and a WG metal Pzshreck team
-
These look great (and nice winter collection)!

Great painting again, Jeff. You will use CoC? It seems to be a good set.

Cracking work, particularly like the officer issuing orders. :D

Thanks for the kind comments guys

Been playing a lot of CoC recently Dirk, funnily enough we had a game today. I didn't use my Volksgrenadiers as the platoon isn't ready yet but hopefully it won't be much longer :)

This is the table in all its glory, late war US and German forces battle it out in a bombed out city.

Fantastic looking table :-*

Ahh that explains it........ :-*

Your winter Germans looks awesome! I recently upgraded my winter Germans to look a little more frosty and cold by dry-brushing a little white paint on the coats, equipment and gear...adds that next level of winterizing your troops. Something to consider. I still have to do my American G.I.'s and Soviets.
-
The last 7 figures done to complete the standard CoC platoon.
5 from Empress and 2 from LAF member Brunei35 who sent me a dozen figures for what was left of some plastic sprues. I think they may be early Warlord games figures but I'm not sure.
-
Some photos of my CoC platoon, figures are metal and plastic Warlord and Empress Volksgrenadiers in the main.
I started painting these back in January and I need to do 16 more with the STG 44 to represent a Sturm platoon but I've decided I'm going to do some supports first.
First up the HQ and 1st squad
-
And second and third squads
-
Great work jeff :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Terrific, inspirational artistry at its very best.

He’s kind if right. They are from the original Bolt Action Miniatures range that Myself and Simon Bargery sold to Warlord Games back 2009.
-
Thanks Paul I think there might be another sculpt from the old range in these photos (the ammo carrier).
Bit of heavy support for my Ardennes Germans in the shape of an MG42 MMG.
-
And a photo of them in a snowy setting
-
Brilliant stuff Jeff. Very nicely painted 8)
That snowy scene pic makes me feel decidedly cold (in a good, atmospheric way!)
-
Nice job on those Jeff 👍
-
Love the snow scene :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks for the kind comments guys, they keep me motivated :)
-
Very tidy paintwork Jeff. They look great. Keep on going! :)

Cheers Richard, I will :)
-
Another piece of heavy support in the shape of an Infantry Gun.
I've gone for a camouflaged gun that's been white washed and some of the white has worn off.
-
.
-
Lovely painted crew! :o
-
The gun in action.
-
.
-
Nice work on that gun and crew Jeff.
-
I like that , cracking job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

More top notch work. 👍

Amazing infantry gun, how did you achieve that streaking white-wash effect?
-
Thanks for the kind comments guys, it's very much appreciated :)
Amazing infantry gun, how did you achieve that streaking white-wash effect?
I painted the gun in the normal colours for vehicle camouflage and then after painting white over the main areas I dipped my paintbrush in water and began to do vertical strokes up and down the white areas.
The white began to wash away and I moved the brush down to give the bottom of the gun more attention as I wanted to make it look like the whitewash has been removed by the gun being manhandled through long grass. Hope that helps :)
-
Some more progress on my Ardennes Germans, I currently have enough figures to field a standard CoC platoon and an Ardennes rifle platoon from the Bloody Bucket PSC.
In order to field a Sturm platoon I need 16 figures armed with the STG44, here's the first 8 of them.
-
The full squad together.
-
That's the Sturm platoon completed with another 8 figures added armed with the STG44.
They are a mixture of manufacturers including Warlord and Empress.
-
Second squad all together.
-
The Sturm platoon is made up of a HQ of an Officer and 3 figures with grenade launchers, an LMG squad with 2 MG42's and 2 squads of 8 men armed with STG44's.
Green troops but heavily armed, should make for a different experience on the tabletop.
-
The two STG44 squads.
-
Terrific work on those. 👍👍
-
Been a while since we have heard from you hope you are well
More lovely work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Painting my way through the lock down Colin, looking forward to getting back to the table.
All good with me and mine, hope it's the same for you and Andy.
-
We are all fine apart from Andrew who has to work :D
-
Poor Andrew lol send him my regards.
-
Some heavy German support in the shape if a couple of Panzer 4's to give the US forces something to think about.
-
Some nice support choices for both sides now, time to turn to terrain I reckon
-
They look the dogs doodahs Jeff, great job :-*
-
Corr! They're a bit sexy ;)
Straight to the inspiration folder they go.
-
Thanks guys, glad you like them :)
-
Awesome looking tanks...very clever!

Thanks Digits its a slow burn, I started on these ar the beginning of the year and hopefully I'll be having my first 'snowy' game around Christmas :)
-
really cool, in both meanings of those words.
-
Another handful of figures for the winter Germans painted this week. That all important 2nd Senior Leader, a Sniper team, a FOO and a lazy flame thrower chap (not the most dynamic of poses lol)
-
.
-
Is the lazy Flame thrower a conversion?
-
lOVELY :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Is the lazy Flame thrower a conversion?
No, he does come with a separate head and you choose which head you want to use. I thought a steel helmet with goggles appropriate :)
lOVELY :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Thanks Colin :)

Nice work all round, but especially the faces.

Once again, very nice painting here.
I'm cold just looking at your minis (especially the PzIVs) ! :D

Thanks Dirk, they'll need to double the number of days as I think everyone will want to run a game :)

Painted up a 3d model of a captured M8 armoured car for my Ardennes Germans. The model comes from Paint and Glue miniatures which has a large range of models to choose from.
