Title: Snapcase All At Sea!
Post by: Mad Lord Snapcase on January 17, 2020, 05:09:45 PM
The Three Musketeers, Doug em4, Vagabond and myself will be meeting for our annual gaming and drinking weekend later this year at Snapcase Hall in Much-Piddling, mid-Devon. My contribution to this beanfeast will be a 'Blood and Plunder' game featuring ships, boats and land action.

Some possible features will be:

•   Ship to ship battles at sea
•   Attack the fort
•   Governor’s daughter kidnapped
•   Giant sharks
•   Treasure of various sizes hidden in a myriad of locations
•   The possibility of seizing treasure from other players
•   Cannibals in the Voodoo Village
•   Monster in the swamp
•   Free the slaves
•   Wanton wenches in abundance
•   Kidnap the Governor

Rum cocktails and Rum Punch will be on offer along with of course, limes, grog and ship’s biscuit! I have an unopened bottle of Pusser's Rum ready to greet my fellow gamers.

I will of course be playing the gallant English, with my pirate captain sailing under a Letter of Marque. This will be Captain Teatime Snapcase aboard his ship The Saucy Strumpet.

Doug em4 will be playing the indefatigable Dutch in the guise of Stadholder Diedereck van den Strepsil aboard his ship Het Geile Wijf.

Vagabond will take the part of the ebullient Spanish as Capitán Don Juan El Vagabunda aboard his ship 'TBA'.

This thread will be an attempt to keep the project on track. I have proposed that we each have a commander and four six-man units as crew. Doug and Vagabond have agreed to paint their own force and hopefully they will add pictures here as things progress.

To get things rolling, I have completed Captain Teatime Snapcase shown here with his son 'Bluebottle' Snapcase, The Saucy Strumpet's powder monkey and his parrot, Errol Flynn.

My four six-man units:

...and the first complete unit, my Sea Dogs, a very salty and scurvy bunch of swabs.

I have some Ainsty ships and other bits ready to go.

...and I have completed some small bits of scenery (with a great pile of stuff yet to come).

I will add more as things are completed, thanks for looking.

Well, this ought to be fun to watch.  Not so sure about the fate of a powder monkey so closely related to his captain!  :o

Thanks Mark, Steve and Sinewgrab.

I intend to have a unit of English Militia in my force. These will be the Port Royal Musketeers, armed with flintlock muskets. To quote from the Blood and Plunder book, wealthy planters are often the officers, with local tradesmen, servants and other working men making up the rank and file.

Here is the start of that unit.

I'm hoping to run this game in November using three tables. One large one and two smaller ones. One of the smaller tables will hopefully have a small chain of islands connected by rope bridges. I've started work on the first island to get an idea of how they will look.

There will be landing stages on some of them but others will only be accessed by the rope bridges (I hope).

My pirate game will be set in a fictitious chain of small islands called Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta (Islands of the Back Passage). These islands will be located in the vicinity of the Cayman Islands.

The Governor of said islands has instituted a Town Watch to try and cut down on the lawlessness and violence that takes place every night in the major town. The Watchmen are very proud of their smart uniforms and have to be a very tough breed. However, they are not above taking a bribe to look the other way if the bribe is big enough!

I regret that I forgot that. I think she could be from Reaper as I seem to remember she hadn't a slotta base.

Mind about the rum! You are going to need a lot of barrels for your town and harbour too: They'll provide refreshments and cover alike...  :D
(I learnt that almost everything that could be conserved was stored in barrels back in the days - not only liquids.)
Title: Re: Snapcase All At Sea!

Like the watchmen.  Wonder if there is a way to get a naturally 'dull coated' clear base?

Yup, barrels were the common cupboard and 'refrigerator' of their day - just without refrigeration.  But lots of salt, the major preservative before refrigeration and modern chemicals (with who knows what long term result - perhaps we'll all live longer with so many preservatives in our food!  :o).

Very much, yes. I imagine crates for cargo, but not for provisions. Barrels are waterproof and protect from moisture. That should not only be important when it comes to the storage of gun powder, but also for grain and anything else that is shipped in bags and sacks today. I even read that pottery was shipped in barrels with wood shavings.

Thanks gamer Mac and SI.

This is Sir Charles Hawtrey, close friend and confidante of the Governor of Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta. He has just returned from the Cayman Islands and had a bit of a rough passage in El Pasaje Ventoso, the straits which lead back to Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta. Something of a dandy, Sir Charles has a dubious reputation amongst the flesh-pots of George Town.

*He seems a bit out of focus, probably as a result of the rough passage. I will substitute with a better picture later.

You’re in full, magnificent Snapcase mode on this one and it all looks splendid so far. I’m loving The Watch in particular and the boats/ships promise to be lip-smackingly fab.

I relied on Google Translate for that (the only Dutch I speak is of the Double variety) and if you retranslate it back to English, it’s slightly different to what was intended. Close enough, though....😀

I've been catching all this on the blog but it looks even better at one sitting.

Also on the laptop the pictures are bigger, and I can see you have a Dolphin behind the island, I thought you were getting Sharks!!! We can't be eaten by Dolphins!!!

I've been cracking on with painting my Pirate crew, I got them out of the box, lined them up and thought that's going to need a lot of black paint and put them away again. There's plenty of time before November. ;)

You are being very inspirational though.

Michi, you are absolutely right. To correct my error I have ordered a Reaper mermaid from eBay. Thanks for pointing that out!

A few more characters for the game. Seen here from left to right we have Charles Carson, a mysterious prisoner, Old Scrotingsack and Madame Moulay. See below for more detail.

Carson (as he is referred to by the Governor) is the Governor's Majordomo and maintains order in Government House. No-one knows anything about the mysterious prisoner in the iron mask. He is kept in solitary confinement in the cells at Fuerte Indigestión, under constant watch of a detachment of Royal Marines under the command of a certain Captain Flack. Scrotingsack is the personal servant of Captain Teatime Snapcase and presents an ancient and wrinkled appearance. He is totally loyal to the Captain, even if somewhat put-upon. Madame Moulay is in fact a soucouyant, she looks like an old crone by day but at night she is said to shed her skin and suck the blood of her victims.

The three figures on the left were painted for the pirate game, Madame Moulay has been abducted from my stalled Witchfinder project.

Good move M'Lord! I am happy to call myself a lucky owner of several of that species.
Even my vessel is called after them - Merry Mermaid. I admit that the name of Doug's ship could have been appropriate as well, although I doubt that his figurehead is as elaborate as mine...  :D

Finished some more figures this morning.

Finally the Governor of Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta makes an appearance. The Governor is none other than Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh. He has just taken delivery on the quayside of his new mobile strong-box, straight off the boat from Bristol. I wonder if this might be the target of future raids by nefarious pirates? He is currently addressing the lugubrious Mr. Jaggers, "Well Jaggers, what do you think of me new cart, eh?". Mr. Jaggers is the Governor's legal advisor and as such, he makes important decisions such as how much of the Island taxes can Sir Frobisher help himself to without getting caught. Naturally, Mr. Jaggers has already helped himself to a small percentage as well, for administrative costs, you understand? Carson hovers in the background, deferentially awaiting any requests his lord and master may make.

Animated titles. Music: Black Dyke Mills Band playing a slow dirge.
Stock shot of mill town at the turn of the century - at night.

SUBTITLE: 'JARROW - NEW YEAR'S EVE 1911'
SUBTITLE: 'JARROW 1912'

Mix through to mill-owner's opulent sitting room at the turn of the century. Lady Mountback sits with her crochet. There is a knock on the door.

Lady Mountback   Come in.

Enter Reg, cap in hand.

Reg   Trouble at mill.

Lady Mountback   Oh no. What sort of trouble?

Reg   One on't cross beams gone owt askew on treddle.

Lady Mountback   Pardon?

Reg   One on't cross beams gone owt askew on treddle.

Lady Mountback   I don't understand what you're saying.

Reg   (slightly irritatedly and with exaggeratedly clear accent) One of the cross beams has gone out askew on the treddle.

Lady Mountback   Well what on earth does that mean?

Reg   I don't know. Mr Wentworth just told me to come in here and say that there was trouble at the mill, that's all - I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition.

Jarring chord. The door flies open and Cardinal Ximinez of Spain enters, flanked by two junior cardinals. Cardinal Biggles has goggles pushed over his forehead. Cardinal Fang is just Cardinal Fang.

Ximinez   Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our four...no... amongst our weapons.... amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again. (exit and exeunt)

Well, I just had to, didn't I? The Spanish Inquisition will be active in my pirate game. Not sure what role they will play yet.

On one of the outer islands of the Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta, stands an old church, the church of Santa Marcas. It is guarded by a group of rather fierce and secretive monks known as the Brothers of Santa Marcas. It is rumoured that they guard part of the Templar's missing treasure in the vaults of the church. How that treasure came to be there (if it is indeed there at all), no one knows.

Reginald and Ronald are the Governor's bodyguards. Twins, born of Violet Annie Cray in the East End of London. The home country has proved too hot for them after overdoing their cunning scheme of enlisting in the army, taking the shilling and then deserting. They were recognised on their fifth enlistment and sentenced to hard labour in prison. Escaping, they stowed away on a ship which was bound for the West Indies. Recognising their propensity for gratuitous violence, Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh took the twins into his employment, feeling the need for personal protection in these unsettled times.

...and now a few more bit players in the madness of Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta.

On the left is Albert Arkwright, a merchant of the islands and a pragmatic, miserly man with old-fashioned values, whose world seems to stop at his shop door. Arkwright is a devious and dishonest merchant who has many crafty tricks to try to persuade a customer to leave his shop having bought at least one thing. He will avoid spending his own money at all costs.

Next in is Clarrie Grundy, barmaid at a tavern near the dockside on the main island. Clarrie is Eddie Grundy's long-suffering wife. She became involved with him after her late father Jethro Larkin employed him to remove the range in their home. Clarrie spends much of her time sorting out problems created by her husband, sons and father-in-law. (I’m not very happy with how her face came out but fiddling about with it seems to make it worse!)

Third from left is Cardinal Richelieu;

(Fanfare of trumpets. Cardinal Richelieu enters witness box in beautiful robes.)

Cardinal: 'Allo everyone, it's wonderful to be 'ere y'know, I just love your country. London is so beautiful at this time of year.

Counsel: Er, you are Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu, First Minister of Louis XIII?

Cardinal: Oui.

Counsel: Cardinal, would it be fair to say that you not only built up the centralised monarchy in France but also perpetuated the religious schism in Europe?

Cardinal: (modestly) That's what they say.

Counsel: Did you persecute the Huguenots?

Cardinal: Oui.

Counsel: And did you take even sterner measures against the great Catholic nobles who made common cause with foreign foes in defence of their feudal independence?

Cardinal: I sure did that thing.

Counsel: Cardinal. Are you acquainted with the defendant, Harold Larch?

Cardinal: Since I was so high (indicated how high).

Counsel: Speaking as a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, as First Minister of Louis XIII, and as one of the architects of the modern world already - would you say that Harold Larch was a man of good character?

Cardinal: Listen. Harry is a very wonderful human being.

Counsel: M'lud. In view of the impeccable nature of this character witness may I plead for clemency.

...and last but not least, Foul Ole Ron, reduced to beggary on the islands after being marooned by his shipmates for his rather peculiar and offensive body odour!

On the left is Toussaint Lafermature, a field hand on the Governor's sugar plantation. In secret Toussaint is planning a slave revolt on the island and he and his compatriots have been stealing firearms and ammunition as and when they can. Next is Rosalina. Rosalina is trusted to travel between plantations and has been carrying secret messages for Toussaint to ferment revolt across the island. Wolfgang Ewald Leo Helmuth Creutzfeldt is next. This 7' giant is known to all and sundry as 'Tiny'. Originally from Hamburg, Tiny has an excellent knack of appearing to be completely stupid as and when it suits him. On the right is Albert Tatlock, landlord of the 'Rover's Return' a tavern on one of the outlying islands. Albert is usually described as a grumpy old curmudgeon by his patrons but serves excellent porter. One of his customers, a certain Walter Gabriel refers to Albert as "that awkward old codger" and he should know!

The latest addition to the Town Watch is Captain Delphine Angua von Überwald. The other members of the Watch have been seen in an earlier post. Angua is the daughter of the Baron and Baroness of Überwald. Her surprising strength and tough attitude have made her one of the most feared officers of the Town Watch.

This cottage is the home of Madame Moulay. If you remember, she is a Soucouyant, a malignant witch believed to shed her skin by night and suck the blood of her victims. Madame Moulay has named her cottage, Mon Repos.

The Watch Tower is now complete. The base it stands on and the boat now need painting. Captain Snapcase, Bluebottle and Old Scrotingsack are heading out to sea on another Caribbean adventure. Foul Ole Ron begs on the quayside but owing to his malodorous smell, no one can get near enough to toss him a copper or two. Al Capon, the harbour-master is hoping to blast that shark out of the water with his blunderbuss.

DeRuyter, I think you may be right about the Dread Pirate Roberts!

FifteensAway, yes you are right about the clock, maybe I should have put a background in to hide that and one of my painting lights.

As to Old Scrotingsack, the various guises of the Snapcase dynasty are always served by an ancient and wrinkled family retainer. The current butler at Snapcase Hall is known to all and sundry as Old Scrotum!

Come closer friends, for to disclose this scandal, one must whisper. In times gone by, Captain Teatime Snapcase was wont to dally with the affections of one Morgan Adams. This Morgan is a feisty pirate with her own ship and crew and a rather bloodthirsty pirate to boot. Then, and this is when the scandal began, somehow Teatime encountered Verity Felicity Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh, eldest daughter of the Governor of Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta. Struck by Cupid’s arrow, Teatime enticed the beautiful Verity (known to her intimates as Peaches) away from the family home with tales of rum, gold and adventure on the high seas.

Needless to say, Morgan was somewhat disenchanted with this development and challenged Peaches to a duel. Peaches, thinking herself a competent swordswoman, met Morgan at dawn on the beach below El Acantilados de Flatulencia. Morgan outclassed her and Peaches lost her left eye to Morgan’s rapier.

Peaches has sworn to exact revenge from Morgan. Teatime, not wanting her to lose the other eye, has employed the services of one Syrio Forel, a Spanish fencing master who has retired to Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta.

Seen here is Peaches first lesson with Syrio. Syrio has suggested that Peaches should start chasing cats to improve her speed and dexterity! Teatime observes whilst a concealed Morgan watches in consternation from the roof nearby.

Peaches lost her left eye to Morgan’s rapier.

Poor Peaches Triple-F (Felicity Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh).
It's an eye for an eye as the old ones say...so Morgan beware! I hope that Syrio will teach Peaches the correct way to wield a rapier.
Anyway, the loss of an eye can always be concealed by a fancy hairdo or some distracting clothing...

Michi, that's a beautifully painted mini, is it from Reaper (and if so, do you know the name of the figure)?

As mentioned in a previous post, there is a rebellion brewing amongst the slaves on the plantations scattered amongst the Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta. Toussaint Lafermature is the mastermind behind it and has been secretly arranging a base for escaped slaves in the mountains on the main island, Las Montañas de las Tetas.

You will notice that most of the place names are Spanish. This gives me a chance to indulge my schoolboy sense of humour whilst having a back story to the islands occupation. Although home to the indigenous Carribbean people, the islands were first taken over by the Spanish in the mid-17th century and colonised. Briefly occupied by the French after the Spanish, the islands then fell into to the hands of the English, who invaded in 1680.

The escaped slaves have been making small raids on outlying plantations to gain stores, weapons and ammunition. Their leader, Meadowlark Lemon is seen here (5th from left) with his ardent supporters and a fearsome bunch they are too!

The Governor, Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh aware of the growing unrest in the islands, has increased the size of the Town Watch. Although, of course, the Watch themselves have no intention of going up into the hills to arrest people. They are content to remain in town, arresting rogues, rascals and rapscallions when they have the numbers and taking bribes when they don't!

I think she actually is and no, regretfully not...  :?

OK, thanks Michi. I'll have a search.

Every community obviously needs a public executioner! On the Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta the chief executioner likes to style himself The Purple Hood, for obvious reasons. The Purple Hood's real identity is in fact Jean Rombaud, a French stay-behind after the English invasion of the islands. Jean thinks the hood will hide his identity whilst off-duty. However, everyone in the islands can recognise that magnificent beer-gut as Jean follows his favourite hobbies of drinking and wenching!

Here, he is accompanied by Walter Gabriel, a long-time resident of the islands and arch-enemy of Albert Tatlock, Landlord of The Rover's Return. Some say their enmity dates back to when they were both young men, competing for the affections of one Minnie Caldwell, an island beauty.

On the right is a lady of a different kind altogether. This is Marie Catherine Leveau, cook and doyenne of Government House. Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh swears by her goat curry and her ackee and codfish is to die for! However, under this veneer of servility lies a very scary lady. Marie is the Voodoo Queen of the islands and is much feared as an expert practioner in the arts of Voodoo. Many local people come to her for poisons, love potions and a myriad of other magical potions and spells.

Seen here carousing are Colonel Mountebank Flashman and Mimsie Slopcorner, outside the Pink Pelican Inn (just bought this building from TheBlackCrane on the LAF 'For Sale' thread). They are singing bawdy sea shanties whilst consuming copious quantities of rum. Colonel Flashman is supposedly in command of the Royal Marine detachment at Fuerte Indigestión. In fact, Captain Flack runs a tight ship with his Marines whilst the Colonel spends most of his time at the Pink Pelican Inn, drinking and wenching. The Marines are guarding the mysterious prisoner seen in an earlier post. Only Colonel Flashman is aware of the true identity of the prisoner and the reason for his incarceration. Rumours that the mysterious prisoner is none other than the Marquis de Hernía, the Man in the Iron Truss may be confirmed during game play! Mimsie Slopcorner is the proprietor of the Pink Pelican Inn, a sink of iniquity where anything may be had for a price.

So reads the sign above the door at the premises where the Purple Hood resides. He does take his work seriously. Jean and his apprentice, Frankie the Mad Axeman are seen here with the tools of their trade and a few of their recent victims. The Governor of Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta, Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh quite often makes use of their services and is probably Jean's best customer. Abbot Prodnose implores Mr. Justice Cocklecarrot to stop and give alms for the poor. Cocklecarrot is in too much of a rush to get to court and anyway, he couldn't give a toss for the starving poor. Mr. Justice Cocklecarrot always carries his own legal papers in a large satchel even though he has more than one assistant. People are beginning to talk about the satchel and wonder at the contents, obviously something very valuable if Cocklecarrot needs to keep it by his side, always.

Cocklecarrot is the Island's Judge and is a great favourite of the Governor's. This is due to the fact that Cocklecarrot is what they call a 'hanging judge'. He loves to don the black cap at the end of a trial, thinking it makes him look rather stern but suave and debonair. The Cocklecarrot family motto is Facta Est Anima Mea Usque, Noli Me Confundere Factis (my mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts).

Here we see Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh, admiring his greatest treasure, the famous Mukkinese Ruby. It is said to be priceless but it carries an ancient curse since it was stolen from the Mukkinese Moghul, Ramitin III in the 11th century. Any pirate worth his salt would give his left leg for a chance of stealing that ruby.

The last couple of days I have been doing a bit of a trial layout. I am laying out a lot of unpainted and unfinished stuff just to get an idea of what needs doing before the big game in November. There will be 4 separate tables but they are interconnected by sea (in my imagination). Table 4 remains a closely guarded secret and is likely to remain so until the game begins. The other tables are Government House and it's environs, the chain of small islands and the big table has the dockyard a sort of floating town and the route to a sandy cove which leads to the Government House table. Clear as mud, eh?

The kitchen with 3 of the tables in view, on the left table Government House, then the docks on the big table and the island chain in the distance by the back door.

The island chain. I intend to inter-connect the foam islands with rope bridges (needs a sea mat).

Here we have Jean Etienne Gerard Vagabondé, a very salty old French seadog. Jean will always be found at the Rover's Return. His past history is unclear although there are many rumours. The most common theory is that he was a very successful pirate who decided to retire whilst the going was good. It would at least explain why he seems to have plenty of dubloons and no seeming need to work to obtain any more. Although Jean seems wealthy, he didn't get that way by throwing his money around and he's always the last to the bar and quite often seems to have left his money pouch in his lodgings. Jean would prefer to cadge drinks by telling his seafaring tales for the price of a good brandy and it must be a good brandy. Old in years now, Jean still feels a young man at heart. Some verbatim quotes from the old matelot himself:

“Much like my own reputation as a brave French sea dog has been gained in sweat, blood and bravery over many hard years at sea and that can never be taken away.”

“Don’t think I’ve always been this fellow with grey whiskers that you see today, propping up the bar in this old tavern.”

(Followers of Vagabond's Wargaming Blog may recognise this fellow! Refer to the Sails of Glory reports of daring naval actions!)

The Brothers of Santo Marcas have acquired a cannon. The brothers are normally armed with sticks and cudgels but they feel that in light of the troubled times, something more is required in the way of fire power. Consequently they have renovated an old Spanish cannon, found on the island. The Brothers call it their Mule Gun, as their mule, Muffin does all the hard work transporting the gun, powder and ball around the island, escorting the monks on their travels. Brother-Gunner Graham has been given the job of firing the cannon but in actual fact all the gunnery knowledge comes from Hercules, an escaped slave adopted by the monks. Hercules understands the science of gunnery after a short stint on a pirate ship. Brother-Gunner Graham seems to be holding his hat on, expecting a rather large blast but I don't think he has too much to worry about with that pea-shooter. It could give attacking pirates something to think about though.

Brother-Gunner Graham. Wonderful. I imagine he worked in the monastery library, did he? I hope that didn’t give him la-de-dah airs and graces.

Muffin the Mule. Oh my, you do tweak my nostalgia chain. Question. Do you like Muffin the Mule? Answer, I don’t know, I’ve never muffed the mule.  :D

More terrific stuff, Snapcase, to ease us through these dark times.

Thanks, DintheDin, I'm wondering that myself!

Doug, I knew you'd like 'la-di-dah' Gunner Graham. I'm sure you've also been involved in Muffin in the past?   ;)

Followers of the blog 'The View From The Hill' from Doug em4 will no doubt be familiar with the name of Sir Gilbert Hill of VBCW fame. This post features one of Sir Gilbert's ancestors of the same name.

Sir Gilbert Hill has just arrived at Puerto de Viento Pasajero (the main port town) on the Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta. He is a friend of Sir Frobisher Fotheringay-Featherstonhaugh, the Governor. Rumours are rife as to why this tremendously wealthy dilettante and doyen of English high society would take the trouble to visit these small islands in the Caribbean, far from his vast estates in Herefordshire.

Just visible in the background is the enormous travelling chest which Sir Gilbert has brought with him. Already, various nefarious elements of the island's ne'er-do-wells are speculating as to the possible contents of said chest.

Sir Gilbert has stopped off at The Pink Pelican for a quick one to wet his upper-class whistle. Trudi and Helga (who are twins) have brought out some liquid libation to stiffen the sinews of Sir Gilbert. There is also a flagon of ale for Sir Gilbert's valet and fixer who is known simply as Wrench. Wrench is never without his seven-barrelled blunderbuss, which he refers to as "my persuader!"

Jean Vagabondé sits quietly in the background swigging his brandy, eyeing the foppish newcomer with disbelief. "Un autre rosbif" he thinks to himself, "autant d'utilisation comme une théière au chocolat!"

On the left is the exotic dancer, Redolence Sweetmeat. Redolence has been forced into the life of a dancer at the Pink Pelican at the behest of Sir Frobisher. The Sweetmeat family owe him money and Redolence has been forced to work at the Pelican to pay their debts. Her younger sister, Perfume has been taken on as the cleaner.

There is, in fact, a full length portrait of the 17th Century Sir Gilbert, by Sir Godfrey Kneller, in that very outfit hanging to this day in the Hill stately home in Herefordshire. Remarkable....

These Brothers complete the Brothers of Santo Marcas. They are the Relic Bearers and are entrusted with the most valuable and revered relics in the Brother's possession.

L to R: Brother Godot holding the Rod of Asclepius, Brother Guildenstern with the Holy Grail, Brother Karamazov holding aloft the Rose Croix and Brother Rosencrantz with the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.

ARTHUR:

Yes, of course! The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch! 'Tis one of the sacred relics Brother Maynard carries with him. Brother Maynard! Bring up the Holy Hand Grenade!

MONKS: (chanting)

Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem

Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem. Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem. Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem

ARTHUR:

How does it, um-- how does it work?

LANCELOT:

I know not, my liege

ARTHUR:

Consult the Book of Armaments!

BROTHER MAYNARD:

Armaments, chapter two, verses nine to twenty-one

SECOND BROTHER:

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy."

And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu--

MAYNARD:

Skip a bit, Brother

SECOND BROTHER:

And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it."

Super monks - very expressive faces. Remind me who makes them?

Now then. Great script to accompany them. As often happens, I don’t recognise the source. I’m guessing Monty Python? Or original Snapcase? If it is, you have a new career waiting for you.

Doug the next time I'm in Herefordshire I would like to pop in and see that portrait.

You’d be very welcome. I believe the entrance fee is quite modest.

The one on the left is Friar Tuck from Trent Miniatures. The other three, I've no idea. The middle two are by the same manufacturer.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 1975 film.

Here we see King Arthur ("How do you know he's a king?" "He's the only one not covered in shit!") doing a bit of lobbing with said grenade. He uses the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch to kill the Legendary Black Beast of Arrrghhh at the Cave of Caerbannog.

Thanks, marco55 and FierceKitty. These ridiculous stories seem to come into my head whilst I'm painting. Probably losing my tenuous grip on reality!

A lot of the characters shown so far have been either targets for the players in terms of their treasure or are merely embuggerance factors designed to frustrate the players and provide the umpire with smug satisfaction. These two characters may prove more useful to the players.

On the left is Arya the Assassin, otherwise known as the Blue Death, referring to her habit of always wearing blue when out for a kill. She is a master of disguise. Very little is known about Arya but she can be hired by the players to assassinate others. On the right is Ena Sharples, an habitué of the Rover's Return. Ena is a herbalist (some may say witch) and potion-maker with a reputation for healing. Don't be put off by that massive wart on her nose. Players buying her a milk stout (her favourite tipple) at the Rover's may find a wound or two healed.

Thanks, Doug.   :)

Britain's earliest pasty recipe dates back to 1510 in Plymouth, Devon. However this is not a reference to that 'food of the Gods' us'n eats down yer. This is a reference to a pastie which is a cover worn over one's nipple, shown here on the right to such good effect by Boubou Flaring, an employee of the Pink Pelican Inn. Expert operators of the pastie often have tassels attached which the most adept can cause to contra-rotate in an hypnotic fashion. Mimsie Slopcorner, proprietress of the Pink Pelican, knows what draws the punters in.

To Boubou's right is a man in a cauldron. Of this, no more is to be said at this point.

On the left is Ben Gunn. After his adventures being marooned by Captain Flint and hiding his treasure, Ben has become a hermit on Isla Serpiente. He has an obsessional craving for cheese. He will be an important man to find in the game as only he knows the hideout of the two bombers, one of which will be necessary to complete a certain mission.

On Ben's left is the first of the two bombers, Pétomane le Pétardier. Pétomane is of French origin and learnt his art in the powder mills of France. He and his colleague 'Stink-Pot' (not shown) are much in demand for specialist jobs such as blowing up entrances into forts and suchlike. Pétomane has been accused before of using too much black powder and this has resulted in one of his clients rebuking him by saying “You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off.”

(Interesting fact: the word Pétard comes from the Middle French péter, to break wind, from the root pet, expulsion of intestinal gas, derived from the Latin peditus, past participle of pedere, to break wind)

Another mission in the game will be to steal items of Sir Gilbert Hill's luggage. Being a very wealthy man, Sir Gilbert has many items of luggage which he has left on the quayside to be dispatched by his minions to Government House. He has also left it under the guard of his pet monkey, Asmodeus. If the players are quick, they may be able to snatch items of great value (or they may end up with Sir Gilbert's laundry which, after several weeks at sea are not the most savoury of contents!).

Yeah, perfect disguise...but in blue.  lol

I am very interested in that pastie&tassle thing though. It sounds like a rather interesting subject to further investigation in these boring home office days...

I believe there to be a whole world of serious scientific research waiting to be done on the contra-rotation theory alone.   ;)

I remember that famous ELVIRA movie, which has impressed me deeply with two good arguments in my younger days. It was the first time I witnessed the art and science of synchronised and contra-rotating tassles...well, this is not the time and place for further information about following studies of that subject, I think.  ;)

Just got to reading all of this at one go, a most entertaining thread my Lord and well worthy of your sense of humor.

60+ figures is a much higher total than I expected, it makes my paltry 26 Pirates fade into insignificance well done and to think you still have 7 months to go, will you keep up this pace?

15'sAway "ya know, I'm beginning to get a good sense of where the "Mad" in "Lord Snapcase" comes from."  I'm surprised it took so long to realize that.  lol

Hopefully. A bit more to add now.

There are fears amongst my gaming friends that I am going off-piste when I should be painting pirates. A certain diversion into African bush wars has caused consternation. However, to get back on track I have finished the first island. These are more representations than scale models and are intended to give flat surfaces for figures. This will be the first in a chain of five linked by some sort of rope and plank bridge.

The sharp-eyed amongst you will have spotted a beautiful Pirate Queen atop the outcrop. This is none other than Lady Dulcinea Cabstanleigh. Lady Cabstanleigh was kidnapped as a young girl when attempting to travel to Maracaibo (her family have holdings there) through the Caribbean Sea. Specifically the El Pasaje Ventoso, the straits which lead to Islas de Pasaje de Vuelta. Having been taken aboard Edward Teach's ship Queen Anne's Revenge, the fair Dulcinea was put to work as a powder monkey. Protected by Teach and Israel Hands, the girl grew into a woman learning sailing and gunnery under the tutelage of these infamous pirates. When Teach received a pardon from Governor Eden in North Carolina, Lady Cabstanleigh became a Pirate Queen in her own right. Sailing her 40-gun ship Dulcinea's Revenge, Lady Cabstanleigh quickly established a reputation as one of the most dangerous sea rovers in the Caribbean.
