Greetings...
Quite some time ago I started a 3rd Century Roman force with the intention of using it ... and of course an enemy... for games with Hail Caesar...
The project stalled mainly because I didn’t relish painting all the toys that I would need...
However I recently came across the I live with cats blog...
http://ilivewithcats.blogspot.com/
Where I found some excellent lists and rules to use Lion Rampant for playing games with Late Romans...
I have now rebased my Romans and I am starting on some Sassanids.
Hopefully this won’t all take to long and I will at last be able to play with my toys...
There is as always a bit more on the blog...

All the best. Aly

Great to hear something from you. Romans are not the worst thing to do. A mass army I always fought against with my germanic hordes. The start is very nice to watch. Do you use the skirmish variant of hail cesar first???
-
Great thread and some lovely brushwork.
Coincidentally I have just purchased the beginnings of a small Roman force from A & A (Steve is a great guy to deal with).
I'll follow this thread with great interest.
-
Looking forward to your project Aly.
A and A and Aventine are the best figures fit sassanids IMHO.
Cheers
Matt

Thank you for your kind comments...
Dirk... I will probably give all the availability skirmish rules a go... but I intend to start with Lion Rampant.
All the best. Aly

Interestingly enough, I had a run at Severian Romans vs Sassanids with the Lion Rampant modification just before Christmas. It was disappointing. Basically the Sassanians are overpowered, especially the Aswaran, while Roman infantry looked ineffective. I admit my opponent (the Sassanian commander) was a tad too lucky with her rolls, but she was also disappointed with the whole experience. Shooting is too effective, as heavy cavalry charges on heavy formed and disciplined infantry. Probably this is a legacy of being a medieval rule set. We also found constantly rolling bucket of dices tedious. I am planning to gave a try to 100 points ADLG that has similar figure count and promises to be a much more enjoyable experience.
-
Dirk... I will probably give all the availability skirmish rules a go... but I intend to start with Lion Rampant.
I played a Lion Rampant Derivative (for the mexican 1860 time) at BLAM and was suprised. Had two brilliant master with the welsh friends Keith and Jeff (965), which drove us through the game. So I think a good choice for the beginning. Hope for a AAR...
-
Arrigo... I cant see where it could be tricky getting balance right with the strength of the Sassanid cavalry and the Roman Legionaries for that matter... but its worth a try I think.
Dirk... I have enjoyed all the Rampant variant games I have had so I will certainly be giving it a go...
All the best Aly

Aly,
after the game, me and my opponent (who BTW took Phil Sabin ancient warfare module at KCL a couple of years ago so she was not green...) commented that the basic problem was that anything mounted felt more powerful than heavy infantry. On top of that pilum is almost ineffective. She, after having trounced me so it is not loser complaints, felt the Aswaran/Savaran being overpowered with excellent bow and melee (she has an unit of Savaran with Kontos and she felt she did not need anything else. Even the light horse archers had no issues in dealing with their opponent.
My commments were on the line it was just the medieval version with other names. If you read the blog it is basically what the author did. I can accept it for the dark age (and the more I am reading about it... the less I think the Dark Age was that dark or that medieval...), but I feel the balance between infantry and cavalry and their weapons for the ancient world is wrong. I think that while Rampant could be used as the skeleton for a small unit ancient game, it needs more work rather than just name slapping. I would also say that I prefer Pikeman Lament and Patriot and Rebels with Michael Leck contribution to the Vanilla Lion Rampant.
In the end I think SPQR was more enjoyable than Crepusculum Imperii. Next outing int the 3rd Century will be another run with ADLG at 100 points (that ends up having very similar figure count)....
Just my experience so just my two eurocents.
-
Greetings...
Thank you for your comments Arrigo...
I think Lion Rampant will be a starting point especially as I am familiar with the system... I like the look of SPQR so i will no doubt give that a go...
I have added a couple of more units to this project...

ooo, them's nice :D

Lovely looking units Aly. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Best regards,
Helen

Thank you James...
Thank you Helen... I am now working from home...
And getting down to some social distancing... Which of course means... Painting toy soldiers... :D
All the best Aly

My late Romans have a heck of a hard time against Persians.
-
I recently downloaded Comitatus and must say that these rules appear more than adequate for your project. I'm always wondering why today gamers would rather distort contemporary WW2 rules into Ancient period than search in our very rich past publications offer just fit for the periods and models we want to play! We have gone into Dark Ages really.
Philippe
-
FierceKitty... I think the Romans did have a hard time against the Persians... they had to do what they always did and adapt... even then it was tough going... mind you they way I through dice... no matter what side I take it will be tough going lol
Philippe... Thank you ... another set of rules added to the list.
All the best Aly
-
It is a very good set, even if the third century, depending if you see it from the early Severian period or the Tetrarchy times, is maybe partly at the edge. I would say that to play the Palmyrenian-Aurelian period onwards you can fully rely on these rules.
I may have sounded a little harsh in my comments. Please forgive me. Anybody have the right to play with any rules of his wish without needing my opinion of course!
Philippe
-
Comitatus gives a good game for this period.
-
No worries Philippe...
I am happy to look at many sets of rules...
My starting point with Lion Rampant is partly based on the fact that I am familiar with the system and it allows my daughter and friends who are not especially interested in 'historical' gaming to join in a fun evening beating me into the ground...
OB...Thank you for your support.
All the best Aly
-
Very nice brushwork.
What is the scale of Comitatus? Is it big battle, skirmish somewhere in between or does it cater to a variety of options?
-
Fab brushwork Aly. :-*
Those A&A Mid Imperial Romans have always been on my radar but I have never got around to buying any- it's a fabulously wide range and pretty unique.
-
Comitatus is definitely battle scale and brushes aside any skirmish level. Of course, battles during the Dark Ages may be small in comparison with Ancients or Napoleonic. Units are in multiple bases in the usual way. The author says he was in fact the first to model units that way.
Philippe

Greetings...
Thank you for your comments and support...
I have finished another unit.. This time it is some Sassanid Cataphracts...
There is as always a bit more on the blog...

Lovely Aly :-* :-* :-*

Thank you Darrell...

Greetings...
I have finished a couple more units for this project...
Some rank and file archers... I’ve used a simple palette for these...but they have still turned out to be quite colourful...

https://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2020/04/lion-rampant-sassanid-archers.html

Fine work Aly - just catching up with your last few units. I really like the round multi bases and the colour schemes. From memory, I think that A & A and GB are quite compatible. That mid-Imperial Roman period is really interesting (though I always managed to avoid it!)
-
Thank you James...
I hope you are keeping well old chap
When I get a chance I will order a few figures from Gripping Beast and see how they look.
All the best. Aly
-
I do like the kneeling archers Aly, nicely done overall as you say with a simple palette.
Take care and stay safe.
Best wishes,
Helen
-
Thank you Helen...
You keep yourself safe as well...
Isn’t it nice that we all have a creative hobby that hopefully keeps us sane in our current world of madness....
All the best. Aly
-
Very nice project! I have a similar one of 3rd c. Romans and Sassanids, Keep them coming :)
-
Excellent stuff Aly. I think multi-basing some has a nice aesthetic feel to it was well as being practical.
Those A&A mini's are a little underappreciated in the hobby nowadays- they're brilliant models 8)
-
Thank you chaps...
3rd century Rome is certainly a very interesting subject...
I agree with you Darrel... A&A are a lovely range... as are Aventine...
All the best. Aly
-
Greetings...
So yet another Sassanid unit...
This time Cataphracts...
There is as always more on the Blog...
https://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/
This is probably the last unit for a while ... because I have run out of suitable bases...
I have to say that this unit was a lot of fun to paint....
All the best. Aly
-
Great looking unit...really nice brushwork...nicely based as well
-
This is some gorgeous work, Aly. I've just followed your blog.
I have found myself in a similar predicament, and am looking at alternatives to the "big battle" rulesets as I just don't really game that way.
There's just as much fun to be had with small scale games, and some rulesets do them better than others regardless of the period. For instance, I am looking at Pulp Alley as a basis for some games set in the 5th and 6th century AD because less models will get me playing (solo) sooner it has strong narrative elements that are abundant in sources from the period.
My most likely opponent is not a "fantasy" gamer (aren't we all, though?) so I'm preparing forces for Lion/Dragon Rampant as well. I think assuming that some rules can provide a more faithful "historical" simulation on the tabletop is a bit of a stretch, really... but, I digress. It just has to work for you :)
There's some wonderful material available on the dynamics on the Eastern frontier of the Later Roman Empire. Have you read much on the period? One of my favourite articles by Simon James on the period explores siege warfare at Dura Europos, it's quite eye-opening and rich material to inspire war game scenarios.
Looking forward to some more updates from you :)
-
More lovely work Aly. :-* :-* :-*
-
Wow. :o :o
Fantastic painting on those Sassanids.
-
Thank you for you kind comments and support...
Christian...
Although I am putting this collection together specifically with Lion Rampant in mind...
I am also looking at at other even smaller scale rules...
I already use a Song do Drums and Shakos for my Napoleonic skirmish games and I am now looking at using another Ganesha Games set as a basis for Ancients...
A Song of Blades and Heroes...
The format is the same for both sets and easy to pick up... My daughter and I are currently playing a Napoleonic skirmish via the internet and FaceTime using only six figures a side...
The rules are simple and very flexible...
I would also recommend ...
The History of Rome podcast by Mick Duncan...
https://thehistoryofrome.typepad.com/the_history_of_rome/2012/04/
The whole thing is good...but it was his coverage of the 3rd Century that got me interested in putting this collection together.
All the best. Aly

Definitely a great podcast. He has great diction and a good sense of drama- not so much as Dan Carlin, who some find over the top (not me!) but certainly a well thought out an accurate history based on the historical sources.
-
Lovely work on the cavalry Aly. Love the colours used, congrats.
Best wishes,
Helen
-
Hello Aly, nice figures as usual. I give you an other rule set, easy but complex in the possibilities: Fistful of Lead big battles. Released this week by Wiley games. Worth a look

Oh, I hadn't even thought of that! Thanks, Aly!
I've had a copy of Drums & Shakos for a while but forgot all about the series. I will give Blades & Heroes a look. Your FaceTime games sound wonderful!
A (relatively) recent book I can recommend is "Between Rome and Persia" by Peter Edwell. You can brows the Google Books version here: https://books.google.com.au/books?id=DQgmOZlsEWcC&vq=dura+europos&source=gbs_navlinks_s

Nick Brown's novel Agent of Rome: Siege is full of inspiration for skirmishes, or a small siege, rather, in the 3rd century Roman East...

Many thanks for the kind comments and book recommendations
I have managed to get some basing done over the last few weeks...

http://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2020/05/lion-rampant-based-romans-part-2.html
And bought a load of new toys...

Though I am such a butterfly I can’t make up my mind what to paint next... lol

The collection is coming on nicely and seems to be picking up a pace :-* :-* :-*
-
Thank you Darrell...
I have just posted the now based up Sassanids on the blog...

Now I need to pant up some more ;D
All the best. Aly

Now I need to pant up some more ;D
Well it will make riding the horses more comfortable.
I'm enjoying this thread, a bit later in the Empire than I usually deal with, so good to see something different.
-
Durn thut preductive spooling... lol lol
-
:-* Very nice indeed....wish the photo was slightly larger as there is some tasty brushwork going on there....really enjoying following your progress - keep up the great work
-
Gorgeous painting. That is some outlandish headgear!
-
Hi, can you tell me the manufacturer of your Sassanid command figures or are they conversions? Superb.
-
Great work on the Sassanids.
-
Lovely work Aly.
-
I think they are Aventine.
Magnifique vraiment!
Philippe
-
Late VI th century Shah en shah: probably Anushvarhan II by memory.
Philippe
-
Never trust memory!
I mean Khosrow II Parwiz (Anushravan is the surname of the first Khosrow). This one was active at the time of Maurice and Heraclius. You can name him by the royal headgear and by the late helm model and horsebarding of his guards.
-
Thank you once again for your kind words and support...
Burnin Coal... That image has Indeed turned out a little on the small side... fortunately all the pictures on the blog are more substantial.
SJWi... The figures are a mixture of Aventine and A&A Miniatures...
Philippe... I bow to your superior knowledge on this one...
I simply picked the prettiest figure from the Aventine Command choices...
https://aventineminiatures.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/592
He will most likely be playing the part of me in any games... lol
Although I have noticed this rather nice pack...

All the best. Aly

Greetings...
Gosh it’s been a while since I posted anything about this project...
Running out of suitable bases hasn’t helped....
But that is all sorted now... Hurrah!
I have now added some Sassanid Armoured Spearmen and Command to this collection...
I think I am getting very close to having a game... to be quite honest I have probably got more than I need already... not that you can ever have enough...
http://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2020/08/lion-rampant-sassanid-spearmen.html
http://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2020/08/lion-rampant-sassanid-command.html
I shall probably do a few more Spearmen and a couple more command before I get them on the table...
Of course there will have to be a parade...
All the best. Aly
-
Splendid stuff Aly :-* :-* :-*
-
Lovely 8)
-
Beautiful work :-*
-
Lovely work! :-*
-
You (& a few others) are winning me over to circular bases.
Lovely work.
-
Fabulous Aly, I actually placed my Sassanid army on my new display case today, first light of day they have seen in three years.
Cheers
Matt
-
Greetings...
As always thank you for your kind comments and support...
Matt ... Sassanids are far too pretty to be kept in the dark... hopefully they will see some combat.
Has.been... I think that the round bases work really well for the big skirmish games I am aiming for.
All the best. Aly
-
Sorry for the late reply Aly. Your collection is looking good. Some lovely additions of late.
Cheers!
-
Aly,
This army is one of the more complex outfits I suspect it's possible to paint. I find your project more than a bit daunting. They are all beautiful. I look forward to an AAR in the future.
-
Greetings...
As always thank you for you kind comments and support...
So... another new unit.
This time it’s unarmoured spearmen...
I think that I have now got enough toys to play a couple of games...
So I will probably pause the painting for a bit... I certainly won’t be stopping as I have lots of lovely lead in the mountain...
There is as always a bit more on the blog...
http://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/
All the best... and keep safe and well... Aly
-
Aly, I've followed this thread since the beginning and it great to see how you have progressed . I have a Gripping beats Sassanid army and after many years thought finally bought an A&A Palmyran army in June, which I managed to finish in a record 6 weeks. I have now purchased an A&A mid-late 3rd Century Roman army which is now cleaned and primed ready for painting. This will be my main "winter" project.
-
Excellent Aly :-* :-* :-*
Those Aventine Sassanids are the bees knees 8)
-
Love these Aly, they are lovely figures
-
Lovely work Aly. Look for the the post game reports.
-
Very nice Sassanid spearmen, Aly!
Saludos!
-
Greetings...
Thank you as always for your kind comments and support...
SJWi... I am very tempted by the Palmyran army as it would be a colourful and useful addition to this project... being able to fight either of the forces I already have..
After a bit of a break I have now finished my first building for this project...
A Roman Temple from Warbases...
It was a joy to build and I am now working on a Villa...
There is as always more on the Blog
http://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2020/12/lion-rampant-my-first-roman-building.html
All the best. Aly
-
Very nice paint job there - really looks the part
-
Really nice work.
-
Aly, good to see your update. Beautiful model. I have the same kit but your finish puts mine to shame. I can really recommend the A&A Palmyrans. The figures are getting on a bit and are a tad smaller than the latest sculpts, but are fine. At the moment A&A are doing a "buy 4 get 1 pack free" offer.
I have bought an A&A 3rd century Roman opponent for both the Palmyrans and my Sassanids. They are all based and primed, and will be my Christmas holiday painting project. Thank god for LBMS shield transfers!
-
Very nice !!
-
Lovely Aly :-*
-
Thank you all for your kind comments...
The villa is coming along steadily... I hope to get it finished over the Xmas break...
SJWi....I look forward to seeing how you get on with your Romans... and yes thank god for LBS transfers... I am not sure I would have even started this project without them ...
All the best. Aly
-
Those pesky romans hiding behind their walls! lol
Nice work Aly- keep it all coming 8)
