Title: British naval brigade gorgeousness
Post by: Captain Blood on July 20, 2009, 02:19:21 PM
Feast your eyes on these, Colonial fans...

Just popped up in Steve Dean's latest painting competition.

It's probably terribly bad form or something to share these with you at this point - especially as the painter may well be a member here on LAF too, and goodness knows I don't want to steal his thunder, so sorry to whoever he may be - but honestly. Sooooo good. What a unit. Just irresistible...  o_o

If these don't win, I'll eat my hat. Or some lead or something.

Captain, I totally agree: that's one of the most impressive units I've ever seen (and there were a lot already ... 8)).

What a beauty. The painting style looks familiar, but I can't put a name to it actually ...

Now I want a naval brigade!  lol

Wow.  :o
They're a bit good aren't they. The effect of them en mass is impressive.  8)

Wow--those are beauties. Great assortment of figs in there too. I wonder who the Artillerists are? Foundry?

The artillerists are Foundry Zulu War.

Gorgeous work.  Makes me want to give up entirely.

So angry with myself that I didn't get those sailors with sennet hats when they were still available.

Are they no longer? What company was it?

Superb  :-*

I'm happy to see that the painter appears to have done the stripes on the collars as a single line instead of three minute ones like I've seen the real smart-arses do. Looks good and far easier to achieve.

That's about the only thing my efforts and these beauties have in common though  lol

I like the RM Artillery and RMLI, too. I must paint some up for my Naval Brigade.

At time of posting, the Matelots are beating the Chasseurs 30-0 and they aren't at all bad, just let down by their bases.

I assume they're the old Copplestone, but I might be wrong.

I think you're correct, Mancha. One of a handful of packs from the "Return to Darkest Africa" range that were inexplicably withdrawn from sale (a couple of packs of Zanzibari regulars also got the chop, can't remember if there was anything else).

I too, neglected to buy any at the time (though I managed to get the ones with the other hats, that didn't go out of production: Typical, eh?). Don't beat yourself up about it, Mancha. How were we to know they were going to do a disappearing act?

I have tried to count them. Did anyone managed to do so?

I'm still faintly annoyed that Mr C withdrew the Zanzibaris before I managed to get more than 20 of them. Now I learn that there were also Sailors in sennet hats which I don't ever remember seeing before >:(

I can only pray that those other giants of the Colonial wargaming world (aka The Perrys) bring out a pack or two of alternative RN types  ;)

Actually, at one point Copplestone warned us they were about to go out of production and we were urged to get while the getting was good.  Alas, I didn't have funds to get at the time.  Of course we were also told that sennet hats would come back after a retooling.   :(

From the faces and basing they look like Kevin Dallimore's work.

Nice mini's!

Saved a copy of the photo for future reference.   :)

Having said that... the design on the Eldar entry is totally amazing.  Should be an excellent match up.

Thanks Schogun !   I couldn't see 'em either.

Why do we not think they are Steve Dean's work ??

He's one of my favorite painters on this planet.

I am surprised that Marc has not re-released the sennet hat naval brigade figures again... there seems to be quite a demand for them since no one else has any available.

thanks for the new link schogun, the original wouldn't work for me either.

Each match in the painting competition only lasts a week then expires. So the link I posted the week before last expired last Monday - because the URL was no longer there.

The new link schogun posted above will expire tomorrow morning when the Naval Brigade entry move onto their next opponent in the competition on a new URL.

If I remember I'll post a new link in case anyone interested hasn't seen them yet...

Gents,

Given that these are K Dallimore's painting, does anyone hazard a guess as to whether that blue color is from the Foundry Paint colors and if so what color combination is it.

It's a lovely 'rich' blue that I'd like to use for my Mutiny Naval Brigade and I have some of the Foundry Blue paints

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Happy W

My guess would be the Deep Blue Triad--maybe with a darker shade coat.

Yes, exactly, the Foundry Deep Blues A,B,C. Got that info from Kevin directly some time ago.

What a coincidence, the Naval Brigade are in a Champions league type painting comp over on Steve Dean's forum.
32 previous winners, mostly called Kevin, are fighting it out to see who's the daddy.  lol

I't's probably going to be Kevin vs Kevin in the final but I hope the Sailors win it.  8)

Yes, I think the sailors are his best, although I really like the Gentleman Pirate too.

Then there are these samurai that aren't too bad  ;)

Funny as I just painted up a small squad too based off the same pic and some research. I actually tried using a slightly darker blue than the Foundry Deep Blue as Navy is so dark it almost looks black. The color turned out nice, but the blue was so dark that the black neckerchiefs are almost invisible against it, which doesn't look great. I think maybe that's why KD went with the slightly lighter Deep Blue.

Also, painting the neck area on these figs is very complex. There are three layers--the back kerchief (don't know the proper name for it), the firing lanyard, and the neckerchief. I practically went blind trying to trace what was what in all the complicated folds around the neckline!

Keep in mind that you can also paint these figs in all tropical white for hot climes or a combo white and blue jackets and trousers.

Where is this figure from? I'm sure I own it and I thought it was part of the Copplestone DA British Officers pack but it's not listed.

I find myself going back to this linky again and again. Marvelous work. Got ot be one of the top achievements of the year.

I also notice that Dallimore is a bit in two minds about painting eyes. Mostly he does not paint eye whites but occasionally he does.

I'm not surprised. I have trouble finding anything on the new Foundry site. I thought the old one was much better in that respect. The groupings seem so arbitrary and random. French Foreign Legion in Mexico? In the "Maximilian Adventure" section? Nope! Try looking under "Cowboys" in the Old West section.

I found the Christmas Panto under among orcs and goblins after a lot of digging.

I find it depends a lot on the figures. I've recently finished some AWI light infantry (Foundry) and the eyes worked fine (although the commander does look a tad surprised, but not detrimentally so  :) ) but some of the artillery figures barely have sockets...

cheers
