Inspired by the coming release of Muskets &Tomahawks 2 I decided on doing the FIW in 28mm and the AWI in 40mm. This thread will focus on the AWI. I am using Front Rank and Triguard miniatures. The detail on these bigger models is amazing but I am afraid my lack of photography skills will fail to show that.: First the colonial militia:

I shall watch with interest. If eyesight becomes an issue, this is my scale - and period - of choice. Looking good so far.

I have jumped into 40mm big style and am presently building up AWI armies for BP, will be following this thread with great interest. :)

Added a small gun for the Continentals:

Very nice. From an historical perspective, can I suggest not going mad when it comes to pistol-armed Americans - this is definitely NOT the Wild East! Militarily, pistols were only ever issued to cavalrymen, sometimes also dragoons, and (in a special form with an all-metal stock) to the rank-and-file of Highland regiments as a nod to the tactics of the Jacobites*. In the civilian world, pistols were an expensive luxury used only for duelling and even those militiamen who could afford them would not bother - they were no good for putting food on the table, and if an Indian got that close, you were pretty much done for anyway. Maybe the Colonial equivalent of the landed gentry (Hancock and the like) would have them as a status symbol, but even then they would as likely be inherited from a deceased relative, rather than bespoke items made for the owner.
[* Highlanders were originally considered the British equivalant of Croats/Grenzer and tended to be Petite Guerre/Kleine Krieg troops up to the end of the SYW/FIW. The Jacobite battle plan was (a) fire your musket, (b) discard your musket, (c) charge, (d) when close to the enemy fire your pistol, (e) discard your pistol - by throwing it at the enemy (hence the metal stock which had a pointed butt end), (f) charge in with hacky/pointy weapons. Personally, I suspect the average highlander did more damage by throwing the pistol at the enemy than he did by firing it, but YMMV! By the time of the AWI, all-metal pistols were still part of the typical Highlander's weaponry, but records show they were not widely issued during the AWI, and - like the broadsword - were not popular in the field, the men preferring a hatchet. ]
of firing them at point-blank range and then throwing; even the standard issue to the rank-and-file in Highland infantry regiments had fallen from popularity by the time of the AWI.
-
But....pistols are so cool! ;)
Thanks for the advice, i know the pistol ratio is a bit too high but I had these lying around so I decided to press them into Continental service. The detail on the weapons on 40mm figures is just fantastic ;)

Next part of project is a small unit of Loyalist Butlers Rangers. I Understand there is some debate regarding the looks of their uniform. I like this image and tried to make my rangers look something similar:

I love it!
Big like toy soldiers, but not toyish looking.

Cracking stuff!! Great seeing the two forces together, great work on the Redcoats. :)

Wow, they all look amazing, you have some great games ahead of you with this lot!

Those have turned out really well.

Thanks all for your comments!
Will now continue with the Continental regulars led by this gentleman:

I wish there was a "Like" button.
Nicely executed!
-
Traveller, he looks terrific!
The green foliage appears poured on, and renders a nice effect.
I'm curious about your basing technique - it looks novel to me - are you using a colorized, glue-mixed sand to apply on top of your prepared bases?
-
Thanks for your comments and interest!
The basing technique is pretty standard
1. Using coins as bases
2. Superglue miniature
3. Apply filler to get an even surface
4. Apply PVA glue and dip in fine grain sand
5. Apply mix of PVA and water to fix the surface
6. Paint and drybrush
7. Apply spots of PVA and dip in green coloured ”sand” (for flower decoration purposes)
8. Repeat point 5. (Creates the ”pouring” effect
A nice thing with 40mm miniatures is that most can be based on basically the same footprint bases (25mm) as 28mm miniatures, ie they do not require much more ground space on the tabletop ;)
-
Thanks for explaining - here it is -
7. Apply spots of PVA and dip in green coloured ”sand” (for flower decoration purposes)
I'm not sure I've ever run across green colored sand in fact (I'll keep my eyes wider open for it at our local hobby craft stores).

I'm not sure I've ever run across green colored sand in fact (I'll keep my eyes wider open for it at our local hobby craft stores).
I bought it at IKEA some years ago, they had, green, black, beige coloured sands or grains, meant to be put in flower pots with plastic flowers I think. Anyway, the effect would be the same with some ordinary sand material just painted green afterwards I would believe. I used this just because I had it...and because I am lazy... ;)
-
;)
The grains give a very appealing, multi-color effect - nice in their texture, along with the color variation (looks wizard).
-
Continuing with the Continentals, I find the app Snapseed really useful to improve my poor photo skills ;)

The Indians are very good well done.
I think this type of sculpting such as the Indians suits Sean Judd style. A slight caricature heavier face details suit these .expressive figures. Sean's movement tends to work better for individual figures on average ( there are some very good marching figures but you have to be selective) his expressive style is a plus.
-
I agree, Sean Judd make great individuals but for unit conformity Front Rank is superior.

Played my first game with M&T2 yesterday. The gameplay was smooth and much faster than I imagined. I see a lot of potential in using these game mechanics for other conflicts both for skirmishes and bigger battles. A few shots from the game, which was an encounter with around 60 miniatures per side. The British units attacked vigorously but were repulsed by the American volleys and cannonfire:
