Table laid out for next weekends game, in the Lead Shed.
We will be playing a game of modern Spectre.
Never played it before, so looking forward to it.
Table laid for a Middle East scenario.

Excellent terrain and buildings.
Love it.
-
+1 to 'Can't wait'.
Another great set up. Just needs the Bacon Butties & lashings of tea.
-
Beautiful table flatpack! Wow! :o
-
Has.been, the kettles on. lol
-
The art to a good cuppa.....Freshly boiled tea!
-
Table looks fantastic. What scenario are you playing?
Will you be recording it/photographing it for a Batrep?
If you've never played Spectre before you're in for a treat, it's such a great game system.
-
wow...as in... WOW!!
Amazing table!
-
Cheers chaps for the nice comments.
Got an idea of the scenario, but will be finalised on Friday night, the night before the game.
After action report, plus plenty of photos will be posted here.
-
Game played this morning.
It went well for one side, but which side ?
Look at those smiling faces.
Aar to follow.
Ian, thanks for running preparing it and running it.

Good to see you all having such fun lol

I had a great time. I didn't really understand what the heck was going on, other than
plan A didn't make it past part way through move ONE!
We (USA/UK hired specialists) were to get across town & rescue our target local.
The opposition wanted him for their own reasons (not healthy) & would be searching the
town. Our plan was:- Team 1) act as a diversion & head to the wrong side of town.
Teams 2) & 3) would then head to the target, rescue him & get him back to the safety
of our compound. What could possibly go wrong? Well...
As we opened the car-park barrier an RPG whooshed in, hit team 1)'s car (I hate you
Digits). In short order after that we lost a lot of guys. By the time game was called
they had captured the target & two of their teams hadn't even got a scratch!
For us:- Team 1) All dead, Team 3) All dead, Team 2) 50% Dead!
Ian, not surprisingly, gave the victory to the locals.
Pictures are in no particular order or plan, just wanted to show the nice figs/scenery.
-
Some more. If you look closely you can see Digits firing his RPG,
& shortly before our forces preparing to leave the compound.
-
Yet more.
-
Last few from me.
First = My Heroes. Unfortunately I did not paint them.
Second = Film crew move towards the firing.
Third = Much needed medical help, too late for too many.
Forth = Overheard from John's team, 'Well at least there are no elephants in this game!'
Thanks to Ian for all his hard work, preparing & running the game, as well as putting up
with all of our (friendly) banter.
Thanks, as always to Bob (Flatpack) for wonderful set up & scoff.
-
Firstly....a huge thank you to Ian for teaching us all how to play, being patient and providing the great minis. Cheers too to Bob for hospitality and for laying on one of the most impressive tables I’ve played on ....very atmospheric.
I do hope I’ve not upset my newfound gaming buddies.....having lost my mojo a month or so back....it all seemed to flow back in a very short aggressive opening few moves.
Not so much 13 Hours.....as 13 seconds!
Despite being led by the wrong Ali (both looked like leaders, both called Ali and both carrying AK’s....how was I to know? Lol) the insurgents who must have been on the hasheesh for all the bravado they stumped up...decided to head straight for the gates of the infidel dog’s compound.
No sooner was the gate in sight, the barrier was raised to allow the two armoured SUV’s out, the third team opting to exit on foot.
With the opening shot of the engagement, my RPG armed fella (can’t remember his name but he is with the virgins now anyway) fired at the grill of the lead vehicle as it moved up to the open barrier. The projectile failed to detonate on impact but instead bounced up and through the windscreen, detonating in the chest of the driver! The resulting explosion inside the car killed one and the SUV rolled back harmlessly, smoke pouring from it.

Unfortunately, my chap was so excited to fire off his weapon, he didn’t check his six.....standing behind him, one of his fellow fighters and a civilian who had decided to film the proceedings on his mobile phone. The blowback from the RPG was the last thing he filmed as he was toasted shortly after!
My guys spent the next few minutes engaging the operators bailing out of the burning car ( who managed to shoot the RIGHT Ali...leading from the front like a right knob) and the chaps on foot near the barrier., two of which took off on foot after the objective.
The second SUV driver, unable to bring himself to run over the dead and dying laying in the open gate, ordered everyone out of the car.
I managed to kill or grievously wound 8 of the 12 operatives lol lol but to be fair, this last team, laid on some very accurate fire, and though failing to suppress my drug addled Johnny’s, were able to drop half a dozen. I had two guys left when hostilities ceased.

I will let someone else tell you what happened to the Kuwaiti money man and the action surrounding him.

Nice looking setup.
-
+1 for the nice looking setup
Where is the wrought iron fencing from? Looks familiar
-
Great game 8)
And I thought you were all young fellows, your my age(or older...) lol
-
So by now, you all know what happening in our Spectre game yesterday.
To summarise, contractors have a great plan to rescue Mr A, but as soon as I opened the compound gate, all hell let loose.
I lost 2 out of my 4 contractors as they opened the gate.
This is move one.
It’s then that I thought I should go and put the oven on 😀.
So, with only 2 men left, I left the compound on foot, into a very excited town...GULP.
After running through a few back streets, my men reached Mr A, only to see him being escorted off the table by the locals. Oh well.
So, that’s my take on the game.
You’ve seen details from has.been and Digits, and you’ve read their take on the game.
Thanks to all for playing, for Ian bringing along his super 28mm figures, and for him running and umpiring the game.
Below are a few more photos from the game.

All quite in the town, before the action starts.

Open the gates.
From here, all hell breaks loose as the RPG takes out the first vehicle.
This leaves my men, running thro the streets.

Great game, good rules, good umpiring, good grub, good beer, great company.
Digits, I hope you have your mojo back, as mine disappeared as I opened the compound gate 😀 (only joking).
-
I do hope so! Certainly I’m intrigued enough to start building my own Middle East buildings for sure.

To be fair, the picture actually depicts your last two fellas sprinting into Jame’s fire team just before they hosed you with their AK’s. Having split his team earlier, the others were up the tower having captured and rendered unconscious the Kuwaiti. Hopefully James has closer pics?
-
Oh yes I have the money shots ;)
Firstly here is the close up of Digits first shot with the RPG
(https://i.postimg.cc/gjF7ggFD/20200222-094703-2.jpg)
and from farther away
(https://i.postimg.cc/XJFHB9Gy/20200222-094703.jpg)
As has been already related, while the brutal firefight was going on in the streets near the compound, the other two insurgent teams were systematically searching all the houses .
Somebody in a certain building was getting very nervous ...
Pacing about anxiously- who would get to him first? The contractors or ISIS?
Guess who just arrived outside?
With a sinking feeling Bin Khaled sees them through the window.
Through the opposite window he sees two contractors of the snatch squad
(https://i.postimg.cc/QxV76hmf/20200222-112506.jpg)
It's too late. ISIS have secured the area and the contractors are ambushed even as Bin Khaled is knocked unconscious to later face the justice of Islam.

Yes, the operators in their haste to get to the prize decided to sprint, unfortunately, as the insurgents then appeared in front of them at the building corner, they were unable to bring their guns up before being dropped. Good lesson to learn.
In fact, my impressions from this, my first game using these rules, are that (as Ian told us) it is brutal. Once the operators in the compound gate started to return fire, though maybe too late to turn the game, they were very efficient in putting the insurgents down. Superior training, couples with laser targeting and modern sighting pretty much ensured every shot bagged one of my team. The poorer trained insurgents needed to rely on the luck of the dice a lot more for sure. We were lucky. I dare say we could play the same scenario a few more times and get stuffed every time.
I’m looking forward to playing again and exploring more of the game mechanics and have picked up my own set of rules and a handful of figures. Unfortunately, having played on this great table, it may be a while before I can amass half the terrain pieces necessary to do so!
-
Great looking game and table! Where was most of the terrain from?
-
Pete, your photo's did the game great justice. Strangely I don't remember the elephant!
-
I'm glad everyone seemed to enjoy the game, as the alleged games master I was too stressed trying to remember all the salient rule points to relax - had a lay down when I got home! Bob did a great job with the terrain - many thanks, added some real atmosphere to the game.
The Spectre rules work well I think but they are a set that gamers need to learn the nuances of as they go, I suspect different decisions would have been made with a bit of knowledge and I probably missed a couple of things in the confusion of multiple voices. I hope we can do another sometime (if Bob lets me) probably when I've got the Syrian regular army figures and their more effective allies done - I have a cunning plan :)

Hi Ian, one point I thought of afterwards is that the shooting is so decisive that I don't see the need for the suppression points? As it never had time to built up to make a difference; teams were dead. Maybe in a prolonged stand off firefight it would ?
-
Peter was selecting single fire and I only had to take the suppression fire test twice. Had he had more guys standing and firing or firing twin shots, I would have had to take more tests and most certainly would have failed, rendering my squad useless. Suppressed would immediately see me at -2 on my firing and reduced movement.
-
Wow what a beautiful table and an exciting game.
-
Strangely I don't remember the elephant!
We never mention the elephant in the room.
Yes I (we?) would do it differently if playing it again, but isn't that true of
all of our (the great unwashed horde) wargames.
Digits, with half my team dead, I was happy to conserve ammo & keep picking
off your team. Had there been a mad charge towards the compound I most
definitely would have gone fully automatic on you.
-
Has.been, are you trying to say we had tactics ?
Blimey, I didn’t know that. lol
-
Looks like I missed out on another good game still can't help being 🤒, I'll be there for the next one though, table looked excellent as usual Bob
-
Still waiting for my invite. lol
Great looking game guys.
-
I can't speak for Flatpack, but you had an invite to my place
years ago, when I got my (only) invite to Chateaux Empress.
-
Just noticed the question about the buildings.
The wrought iron fence is from TTCombat, along with the security box, barrier, and portacabin.
About 50% of the buildings are Blotz (you will recognise them as they have narrow steps up the sides). I then added a thin layer of polyfiller to the outside walls, to add the texture. A dark coat of chocolate brown paint and two different coats of lighter paint and they are done.
There are also “compounds” that started life as 20mm separate resin buildings that we used for invasion of Lebanon games in the past, but then has.been applied his magic, and turned them into compounds for Afghanistan games.
The large square ambassadors building is new from Sarrisa in their Tobruk range.
The rectangular ambassador’s building, is from my very own imagination, using cork tiles.
The ambassador’s walls are made very simply from cork tiles. These are great, as you can add doors and windows, and have walls as long as you want.
Hope this helps.
-
That is a great looking game
-
Air support arrives, just a fraction too late.

Wondering where the hell everyone has gone?
-
Choppers scared them off lol
-
No it was the word that more RPGs had arrived.
-
Don’t keep saying RPG.
I keep getting flashbacks......balls in the air.
-
:D
I meant to ask, what are you using for the tarmac road Bob?
-
Digits,
It’s spare roof felt, left over from the shed.
-
I like it! Great idea.
-
Great thread guys! Kudos!
-
Many thanks

Along the same lines, last weekend I painted up a few items for modern games to come, that could be used with Spectre rules ?

Fantastic looking models and table. I've just ordered the Spectre rules myself, now need to get some models on the go.
-
Bob, who makes those troops? They look great.

James,
The special forces are Britannia, and the vehicle gunners are Elheim and RH Models.
-
Spectacularly lovely game! Sirs, I raise my hat to you.
-
That gaming table is superb. Looks like a great setup for games, and your miniatures collection is awesome too.
-
Many thanks for your kind remarks.
I’ve realised I have no dead taliban / insurgents in 20mm, so I’ve now overcome that problem.
Also did 4 more taliban civilians at the same time.

It’s dead operators you REALLY need mate! Lol
Good job though ;)
-
Looking forward to playing a game with them after lock-down.
-
Just finished a couple more Hummers in 20mm.
They are metal ones, so I don’t know what make they are.
I got them second hand from the Newark show.
Repaint, roofs glued on, based and ready for the table.

Great stuff mate.
-
Many thanks mate.
-
Well done Bob. I must sort out what vehicles I still have to do for this.
-
Let's roll!
-
Amazing really.
I went to the Newark show, not wanting or even needing any more 20mm Afghan vehicles, but was offered a box containing a few.Bought it for £30, and during the lockdown, I’ve actually painted them all now.
So good to go with this little lot.

Nice.

Finished some 20mm insurgents....hundreds of them (25 actually)
From RH Models.

-
I hope you mean that you have finished the buildings 'today' , because
if you are playing a Spectre game 'today' and you haven't invited the
rest of us... you are in BIG trouble. We know where you live, having
painted the house will not save you.
-
Nice work.
Do you feel there is sufficient space between the walls of the compound and the building? That has always been my concern about the 28mm version.
-
I agree with your concern about the walls being close to the main building.
I still think figures will fit in the gap, but they will be a little close.
THB it was half price when I bought it, so I can’t really knock it.
-
So during the lockdown, I’ve had a thought that I could use the spare mdf that the building come with, to build a market place or it’s correct name, a souk.
The idea was to use the frame mdf, that usually ends up in the bin, and to add market stall to it. These could then be offered in front of the building.
I looked through the internet for others, that had gone down similar routes.
I ended up at the matakishi excellent web site again.
There was a great image of a building, that was adapted into a store.
(https://i.postimg.cc/HkYq49Xg/94245-B1-D-F66-D-406-F-AC72-219-A6-FA9-F11-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/N5nCQTdJ)
I thought, I could “borrow” a couple of ideas from this.
Firstly I looked at the market awnings. Now these were attached to the building and I didn’t really want to do that, so I followed his brilliant idea of using cocktail sticks and florist wire, to make frames, for the awning to sit on.
(https://i.postimg.cc/44KNpsZ5/98-E6-B349-8-C65-45-D7-890-C-51-AE69-A5-C988.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/qgTTTfNh)
These could then be offered up in front of the building, or taken away if not required.
(https://i.postimg.cc/F1t6Ljv2/F06603-FF-6-B93-4-CF8-A325-153-F7-B701-ED7.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/CnNJynzN)
I also borrowed his idea of where to buy the “goods” from, that would be sold in the market. Most of his goods came from Ansty castings.
So now the ideas were coming together, and I built 4 buildings, that would have market stalls in front of them, using the left over mdf.
(https://i.postimg.cc/6q4SqMkr/41697-E16-05-D2-44-A1-A79-D-41-AA21481-E55.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xNYgF3T8)
Now I needed to cover the market stalls with awnings.
I tried several ideas, soaking tissue and kitchen towel in watered down pva, but then bought a £1 cotton shopping bag from Hobbycraft, and started cutting out awnings from this.
I glued on the cotton material, and did soak it a little in watered down pva glue.
(https://i.postimg.cc/8CPTcVtL/FA4623-AE-7129-4-BA2-8858-F8-FC4-FB7283-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8732Xx8C)

At this stage, I decided to trim the stall base section, and removed the corners that sat around the base of the builds, as I decided the market would be more versatile if it didn’t have to sit up against, and around the building base.
(https://i.postimg.cc/zvWr6DGY/B0252-F0-C-AC15-45-BF-A8-D9-174899-A8-F17-D.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/N2gSrcXd)
Here is the stand alone market, if required.
(https://i.postimg.cc/MZjqv5b3/B1-F52432-CAA9-4-E12-A3-C7-C67566-D973-E1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/DmFtNqN1)
Now I needed to paint the awnings. For some reason, images on the internet, show that Afghan market stall awnings, are very popular in red, so that’s the way I went.
(https://i.postimg.cc/yYmKTNGF/5-B52-E628-837-F-4-C3-C-9-E67-65-F21344-D5-E1.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/N5jZsQBM)
Then some basetex on the bases.
(https://i.postimg.cc/KYHhY3Ky/B5-EE8163-8-B64-4-FAB-9309-8-E09-E198-FC25.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/HJXhZx4S)
A bit of dry brushing on the bases.
(https://i.postimg.cc/6qCkzHM9/42-AFE2-D8-BBCF-4-A45-AC7-E-08-FE851-CBDF3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/fSTqRv4F)
After this I added a few tufts of grass, and they were good to go.
So now I had the stalls, but what about the goods to sell and the buildings that they were designed to sit up against.
Going through the internet, I found 3 or 4 suppliers to go to, that sold market goods that would be suitable for the Arab theatre.
I dispatched my credit card, to get the goods, and spent a week painting crates, sacks, bowls, pots and pans, until I ended up with this little lot.
(https://i.postimg.cc/LsZNzJCS/375419-FF-F259-477-A-8858-661278-DEC1-AC.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/nsp4xhfS)
I also had downloaded a page of Arab rugs from a modelling site, so I printed them out. I glued a couple to a table, then rolled a couple round a cocktail stick and glued them to the table as well. So now we have a rug stall for the market.
(https://i.postimg.cc/c4yZY3Fx/B4-D29706-BA62-44-B0-AFE7-2-F597-BDA954-C.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/yWPwCDqt)
So now for the buildings. These were from Sarrisa, from their Middle East ruined range.
Here you can see them nearly finished.
(https://i.postimg.cc/CLgTdgKd/A892-E2-B3-CB7-E-4-E13-9-FC4-DF016-FC6-ED72.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/WtXffxgP)
So as a trial, I put one row of stalls in front of one row of buildings, and ended up with this.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Sxmh1h0H/9-B1-BFDE9-D918-41-AC-B7-AF-D1-D5-B7714049.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/6ybgTFph)

Just finishing the buildings, and should be able to assemble the souk, and take final pictures later today.
-
Brilliant work Bob. It is going to be scary, as Coalition troops,
going through a busy market place.
I remember an episode of Hill St. Blues when gang war broke out.
A detective on the radio to base said, 'It's like Nam out there,
fire is coming from all directions & no-one is wearing colours!'
-
Awesome stuff Bob. Very impressive.
-
Very nice work.
-
Final photos of the souk/market set up.
I really wouldn’t want to driver those hummers down that road.

Cracking job :-* :-* :-*
-
Wow! Wow! Wow!
Seriously nice job Bob. A lot of work but beautiful finish, really atmospheric.
And it adds a real splash of colour to the table, nice.
-
Awesome job! :-*
Very atmospheric. And yep, it looks pretty scary!
-
Best market I have seen! :o
-
Many thanks for your nice comments chaps.
-
That is really amazing.
-
Is that set up for 20mm?
If yes I think with different civilians (28mm) it would work in 28mm.
-
Yup, I’d say so. I’ve a pile of “cargo” I’m saving for my pirate town, but you may have inspired me to get it painted. Won5 look as good as this mind. Can’t wait to turn my RPG on the market....imagine the carnage!
-
Excellent set up.
Love what you have done. :-*
Makes me want to get back to my Blackhawk stuff
and build a market street.
-
Awesome idea for the market. I may have to nab that idea for when I eventually get some buildings done for Spectre.
-
Bob, brilliant job on the market mate, really your best work to date. So many different periods it can be used in, can't wait to game in it sometime. Again, well done :)
-
Great looking setup, and very intimidating for the Humvees...last thing you want is a donkey cart at the end of the road.
-
Coming to the next game.....
Syrian army regulars deploying from their BMP
Iraqi militia
Team Overwatch deploying for action
Insurgents got their own tank
-
Very nice sir.
Amazing what you can do with a balaclava and an AK47.
Figures all look great.
-
Shiny new T55 ready to make mischief... ;)
-
Picked up some new matchbox vehicles from Tesco today, to use in 20mm Afghanistan games in the future.
Hummer will be repainted for US troops.
I like the little Subaru Sambar, as you see these little wagons all over the world.
Had to pick up the unimog as I love them, but were they deployed to Afghan with German forces, or anyone else when it comes to it ?

-
Paint 'em up Bob! We'll use them.
-
Time to roll out the RPG guys ;)
-
Not again, please. :o
-
Oooo....let me please!
-
Digits, put it down, and stand away from the RPG. :D
-
How do you find jumping between 20mm and 28mm? I've always wavered between the two scales, but for some time now have been settled on 20mm due to the wide range of equipment and troops available. I've always told myself that there is no point doing both scales as they are essentially representing the same level of combat, and this way I don't have to stress about multiple scales of terrain.
Having said that, I've just stumbled upon a Modern Australian platoon in my stash from the Empress KS way back when, and I'm really torn about what to do with them :?
-

Paint them. A friend might jump into the 28 moderns and you will have a force ready to play. :D
-
Good question on the scales.
Most of my modern stuff is 20mm.
I have figures, vehicles, and buildings all for that scale.
Then somehow I bought Blotz 28mm Arab buildings (don’t know what happened then).
Then just before lockdown, we played Spectre using my 20mm and 28mm buildings, but I had no 28mm modern figures.
After that game, I bought a few 28mm modern figures, painted them, then bought a few more.
I also bought a couple of 28mm vehicles. But these were just cheap ones.
In fact it was such a good game (cheers Ian), that a few of us rushed out and bought 28mm figures.
So I’m now in the middle of situation where I can play either, but really my collection is 20mm, that has slowly moved on to 28mm.
-
Indeed...loads to paint! :'(
I have half a dozen or more 28mm technicals etc, a couple of which are Spectre that Could do with painting up. As I’m crap at vehicles, I will need to pick your brains some time...
-
And the good news is I've got some more 28mm done or on their way to being done. Afghan police, SAS (Dave's actually), Hezbollah, more insurgents, Apache gunship (courtesy of Pete) and the ruined city piece is coming along nicely (probably because I'm not doing it!).
We will play again :)
-
I only really use 28s, I guess it's cos I started when I was younger with games workshop stuff and I always have this desire to use all my stuff at once in one mega inter-temporal war.
-
This is quite amazing, your detail brings such life to the table, something that is often absent. The stalls are sumptuous, I think that's the right word.
Thanks for posting this, lots of ideas for other periods as well as this one.
Cheers

Many thanks for these kind words.
I hope people can see and use any of these items, to enable them to explore and enjoy the hobby a little bit more.

Just found this thread and desperately trying to avoid buying a new period.
But the opening description of the game reminded me of a Force on Force game I played in at Historicon 2016 - Find the bomb factory in Faluja.
The most experienced FoF player on the Coalition side was a young lad who was given the Delta Force team who promptly drove down the main road and died in a hail of bullets and rpg’s.
Seems most players had never heard of the “pepper pot” manoeuvre 😖.
-
A little more scenery for Middle East games.
I’m sure the AA or RAC could get it running again. lol

AA & RAC don't cover RPG damage Bob.
-
First up, excellent set up Flatpack (& the usual top rated scoff,
bacon & sausage butties with lashings of tea & soft drinks).
It all looked fantastic.
Problems.
Now this may well be down to me, as Umpire & someone who had
read & re-read the rules multiple times in the weeks before the game.
These comments are from memory as I have handed back the rules.
1) No index. = very difficult to find 'that rule'
2) No glossary. Writers seem to have assumed players know modern
warfare & understand all the acronyms. I didn't.
3) Rules dotted about, sometimes with no apparent logic.
Despite a sequence that emphasised both sides do a casualty
phase, in a completely different part of the rules you find that
the Taliban/insurgents... just DON'T ?????
4) Very few worked examples
5) Some explanations ARE open to mis-interpretation
e.g. The section will TAKE (my emphasis) another round of shooting.
Suffer one or give out one????
6) We all agreed with the rules when they said that sometimes you
don't want to kill the enemy, just keep his head down, however
despite lots of searching we could NOT find out how to 'Pin' a unit.
7) We are all familiar with having a 'character/characters' advising
& explaining to players concepts/rules/ideas. Having this IN the
text, as opposed to in separate text boxes, just adds to the hassle
of finding 'that rule'.
8) The quick reference sheet is very crowded. It has the look of 'lets
get everything on there' , which though a noble aim has led to
players having to move around it quite a lot. Not helped by the
choice of colours. White on orange & black on grey. which make
reading under electric light harder. Better would have been one
colour heading for each 'topic' e.g. Firing, Wounds, Off table etc.
9) Some rules seem to have unnecessary 'clutter'
e.g. Section fire is graduated by the cover the enemy is in (good),
but then there is a 'Cover save throw' May-be we were mis-reading
or just not getting it.
10) It also might be a mis-read, but the insurgents seem to deploy
an mine (booby trap) by putting down a marker & it will explode
when the Coalition troops obligingly walk passed it ??????
Now some pictures of Bob's great set up.
520 The Brit's approach route
521 Drone's eye view of the Market
522 Ground view of the same
523 The hard worked interpreter (who the rules say adds +1 to
any interaction with the locals, but we couldn't find what you
add it to ????)
524 Sniper draws a bead on the lead British patrol
525 'Hearts & Minds be bu****ed!' Brits 'shove' back
when shoved.
Taliban victory points start to add up.

Pete
I posted your comments on the Contact Front FB group, and Martin kindly replied.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and comments, always appreciated 🙂
Before I comment on them individually, I touch on the design/layout of the first version of the rulebook itself. There were certain ”restraints” regarding layout and page numbers which lead to some parts being cut or seem slightly crammed. Not an excuse, just a reason. When a version 2. might be published (no date know) some things might change on the layout side.
The way the rulebook is written was a personal choice, by the author and he knows it not to everyone’s taste, as it not done as we are used to have our rulebooks look. Could certain sections maybe have been done differently… possibly. From what I’ve seen of upcoming supplement, he’s definitely learning.
1) No index. = very difficult to find 'that rule'
- Table of content has all the rule sections listed with page numbers. But yes there is not extensive index.
2) No glossary. Writers seem to have assumed players know modern
warfare & understand all the acronyms. I didn't.
- This was cut due to the page numbers rising.
3) Rules dotted about, sometimes with no apparent logic.
Despite a sequence that emphasised both sides do a casualty
phase, in a completely different part of the rules you find that
the Taliban/insurgents... just DON'T ?????
- The core rules allow for regular armies to be used by both sides, allowing for future supplements, which is why the insurgents have their own rules in a separate section. But I can see the initial confusing 🙂
4) Very few worked examples
- more would be better ofc, as I remember this was also a page number thing. Not sure.
5) Some explanations ARE open to mis-interpretation
e.g. The section will TAKE (my emphasis) another round of shooting.
Suffer one or give out one????
- is this about the Unacceptable casualties chart result of 2-3? If so it means they give out another round of fire. But the general point is taken and have been mentioned before. This falls to me as I missed it during proof reading If some other rule please let me know 🙂
6) We all agreed with the rules when they said that sometimes you
don't want to kill the enemy, just keep his head down, however
despite lots of searching we could NOT find out how to 'Pin' a unit.
- page 12-13: Section fire.
7) We are all familiar with having a 'character/characters' advising
& explaining to players concepts/rules/ideas. Having this IN the
text, as opposed to in separate text boxes, just adds to the hassle
of finding 'that rule'.
- noted
8)The quick reference sheet is very crowded.
- agreed and a new QRS may be added when we find time. But the initial idea was to keep to a max of 2 pages. The release of the SF supplement and upcoming Afghanistan one may force the need for a new one.
9) Some rules seem to have unnecessary 'clutter'
e.g. Section fire is graduated by the cover the enemy is in (good),
but then there is a 'Cover save throw' May-be we were mis-reading
or just not getting it.
- there’s no cover save against sections fire, it’s incorporated into the target number. See page 12-13.
10) It also might be a mis-read, but the insurgents seem to deploy a mine (booby trap) by putting down a marker & it will explode when the Coalition troops obligingly walk passed it “
- Only for IEDs/mines planted during the game, do you put down markers (which makes them more of a deterrent). Ones bought as a support option are marked on the insurgents map and only revealed once blown or detected.
It is not crystal clear from the text, I know, added to next FAQ version.
I’ll take your comments and add them to the feedback document I have. A few are relevant for the upcoming FAQ update, so thank you

Martin

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have returned the copy of the rule to Bob (Flatpack) &
therefore not able to look again at things you have pointed out.
-
Well Bob, you got away with it lol lol
-
Tee hee :D
-
It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it lol
-
Wow. Rough day for the Brits...maybe next time... ;)
But what a great board! The figs and vehicles look good, too!

Went to the Warfare show last weekend.
Picked up a couple of Bradley’s at a fiver each.
Got them home, only to find one of them was missing it’s side armour.
So finally got to the shed yesterday, determined to sort it.
Here are the two Bradley’s I bought.

I removed the surviving side skirt to use as a template.
This was then cut out of plastic card.

Plastic card side skirt, glued together, then undercoated brown.
I tried to carve in the plates.

Now to undercoat the baggage, and add the finishing colours.

Skilfully done Bob.
If you want to put black vertical lines on it (like the other one)
a bit of thin card & a black Gel pen will do it.
-
Excellent work Bob, all we need now is a set of rules we all want to play to lol lol
-
Has.been lines added. You’re a star.

Bob, you are welcome.
Bob, Ian & anyone else who is interested, Yes to Ambush Ally.

Added to a little support lol
Might go down the old Ambush Alley for the next game ?

Now working on a few cheeky buildings. :`

Fancied a cheap and cheerful bridge for up coming games.
Looked around for a cheeky girder brigade.
Plenty of shapes to choose from, at Warbases.
Ended up with this one.

A return to the middle east with a pilot rescue scenario.
Helicopter has come down in the east of a built up area and the Spetsnaz have been sent to recover the pilots before the local militias can capture them and parade them in front of the world's media.
The 3 insurgent players had 7 possible deployment spots they could choose around the city and the rescuers had 4 entry points on the western edge of the board that would be randomly diced for.
-
The Diman militia group deployed in the blown rear of an apartment building near to the government police station where, completely by luck, the rescuers entered the board in 2 BTR60's.
Not wanting to miss their chance they issued out from the very useful cover and let fly with an RPG which missed!
The BTR's ignored the attack and roared off down the road but the sentries at the road blocks didn't and a gun battle which was nothing to do with the mission occupied this group and the army for the rest of the game.
End result; 5 dead insurgents and 3 running away.
-
The Assan group deployed in a north eastern street and had chosen to bring along a truck mounted ZSU-23-2 for extra muscle.
Speeding down the road toward the crash site they cleverly did a handbrake turn with the truck and deployed the ZSU facing the crossroads the BTR's were bound to come to. Sure enough the lead BTR appeared and BANG! big hole and lots of smoke as the BTR rocked to a standstill. Unfortunately for the militia the spetsnaz had debussed the turn before which was going to be a problem >:D
The street corner then erupted into fire as both sides exchanged shots and the Russians exacted revenge when a RPG26 tore the truck and it's gun to pieces. Realising they were losing the shooting match the militia closed for hand to hand (the first ever in a Spectre game for us) but fared no better, everyone died, yes everyone lol
-
The Abtin group also started in the north eastern corner but opted to work their way through the ruins, which was slower but certainly safer :)
They missed the blowing up of vehicles and men dying in the street but did get to a position overlooking he crash site and as the spetsnaz exfilled with the pilots opened up and downed one of the spetsnaz. Unfortunately this drew fire from one of the spetsnaz fire teams and the group was suppressed with one dead leaving the spetsnaz to bundle their comrades into the remaining BTR and get back to government lines.
-
First it was a fun game, & looked great, so thanks Ian.
Took lots of piccies. To start some street scenes.
-
I think we had fun ???
There was a bit of post game discussion about whether the insurgents should have started closer but I'm not sure that would have helped. The main error for the militia was getting involved in a gunfight at the police station - the army were essentially spectators and would only react if shot at. The far better strategy was to use the row of buildings they were already in to parallel stalk the BTR's and inflict losses from the safety of cover (a bit like the reality?).
The ZSU was a good choice and maybe the other NE group could have chosen the recoilless rifle that was offer to fire down the street while the men negotiated the rubble.
The spetsnaz were controlled by the umpire and had one job, no going off script for them :D
-
JC turns to his men & says, 'Right lads, lets get out onto the streets
& kick arse!'
The Russian BTRs race through the Army checkpoint without stopping.
When JC gets his men out & gets off a quick RPG round...
the Russians pay it as much notice as they did the Army check-point.
Later in the game JC tried his luck with his OTHER RPG round. It did
just as much damage to the AFV as the first shot (None!) but did
take out two unlucky Spetsnaz standing nearby.
JC then got involved in a fire-fight with the Army. Neither did well,
no thanks to the Army's tank as two pictures before & after the fighting
show. It never moved or fired.
-
Now onto my guys. Ian kindly said we could each choose a vehicle.
I was the only one who did. It limited my choice of entry points,
but I figured it was worth it.
I park the truck up & wait for the BTRs (note. two BTRs can NOT
sneak quietly down a road). I do get off a salvo & do damage, but
skulking Spetsnaz take my truck out with a well placed rocket grenade.
With the truck blazing, fuel burning & ammo exploding... I get on to
the RAC to ask for 'recovery'
lol
-
With it all going to hell in a hand cart, & another chopper overhead,
I go for death or glory & melee the Russians...It ain't Glory I get. :-[
-
Rob was the only one of us to get close to the target (downed pilots).
First the bird's eye (chopper)view of the downed helicopter.
Rob gets his team upstairs & even gets some shots off, but
the Spetsnaz really plastered the building.
All that was left was for the TV crew to interview a local.
As I said, fun was had. Good game.
-
Wow great pics wonderful toys and buildings
-
Great looking figures, vehicles and terrain!
-
I had the third group of insurgents.
As Pete says, I stayed well hidden in the buildings and worked my way towards the downed helicopter, as I suspect real insurgents would do.
I did not want fire support from a recoil less rifle armed truck.
I wanted to work my way “quietly” towards the enemy.
I worked my way thro the rubble of the destroyed buildings, and arrived overlooking the downed helicopter.
I did get a chance of a shot off at the chopper pilots, as their rescuers tried to remove them from the crash site.
I don’t think the figures started too far apart, as we were playing on a small table anyway.
Nice to play on Ian’s commissioned buildings for the first time.

Superb table
-
Okay then. Well done all around. But a couple points I feel compelled to add... :D
1. Now that is a great-looking battlefield. Very lovely indeed! The figs and vehicles ain't bad, either. Even the KO-ed ones... ;)
B. Never volunteer for hand-to-hand with people trained in hand-to-hand combat... :o
III. be wary firing recoilless weapons from enclosed spaces. The people in said enclosed space are just as likely to suffer damage as their intended target.... 8)
But as I said, well done all around!
-
But Capt. I HAD to go for hand to hand.
1) We wuz getting a pasting in the fire-fight
b) (Your point listing system lol) Another chopper arrived overhead &
I did not think he was there to give an update on the rush hour traffic :D
3) Umpire Ian said no-one had ever done hand to hand in Spectre games.
I took that to be a challenge, but soon found out why no-one else had tried it.
Four of my guys went into just two Spetsnaz. One of his went done (lucky dice
throw from me) but all FOUR of mine ended face down in the dirt!!!!
-
Great looking games guys. Love the scenery in particular.

Another Spectre game, this time Team Overwatch have been detailed for a hostage rescue mission from an insurgent compound on the edge of a town. Players were given a start-up brief which essentially boiled down to; insurgents holding member of middle east royal family hostage as bargaining chip for better weapons, royal family looks like it's going to agree, USA sends in the deniable operators. Key point in the game was that the hostage mustn't die, major oil delivery problem for the USA if their guys screw up, insurgents risk facing the wrath of a regional power who wouldn't normally react to their activities.
182737 - the hostage
193534 & 544 - the compound and town
184852 - Overwatch operators
-
The insertion was late so the Overwatch team ended up going in at dawn just as the market was setting up. The team was split between two players, Dave B & Pete S, Dave took the operators mainly armed with DMR's headed up by the team leader James Silva and planned to give covering fire from the roofs of houses near their insertion point. Pete took the team armed mainly with CQB weapons with the objective of breaching the compound and extracting the package, they started on the other side of town, again near a house for cover.
The insurgents had one team on alert patrolling the compound controlled by JC as El Masry and one resting inside the main house where the hostage was under the Chechen, Victor Abraham, this group was controlled by Bob. There was an option for additional insurgents to appear but as the game developed we dropped it in the interests of balance.
Photos of the dawn calm and civilians heading to the market.
-
Opening moves went well for the operators, both teams gained the roofs of local houses and were unseen by the insurgents. The support fire team got all four onto a house with roofs at different heights, the breach team stationed William Douglas & Alice Kerr on a roof just shy of the compound tower while Samantha Snow & Mike Vogel headed toward the rubbish skips piled against the compound wall.
111459 - Douglas & Kerr in place
111546 & 113020 - Dorothy Brady & Johnny Porter arriving and getting set
113706 - Silva & Jacob Stone in place
-
Now they were set it was time to clear the roofs before they got noticed and so Silva's team opened up, eliminating an lmg guy on the guardhouse roof and a guy in the tower, the other two shots went wide.
The insurgents wildly returned fire achieving little other than Jihadi Jack's RPG shot hitting the side of the building Brady & Porter were on, knocking Brady unconscious. The shooting did however send El Masry racing up the steps of the tower to steady his fighters.
-
The insurgents on the roof and tower now became a bit of a bullet magnet as Silva's team poured lead into them and Douglas & Kerr joined in. Amidst the lead throwing we did have the obligatory comedy moment of Jihadi Jack realising he had no reloads and so running around shouting "where's the ammo" even though there were boxes in plain site on the roof lol
122322 - casualties in the tower, including El Masry
122331 - Kerr & Douglas
122327 - Jihadi Jack running in circles
-
Time to breach the compound.
Vogel led the way but as he was doing a bit of skip diving (well that's what we all said lol ) Junaid Hussain spotted him and put him down. Revenge was quickly exacted by Douglas and Snow was into the compound.
Silva's team kept up the cover fire eliminating new targets who obligingly climbed into view, including the gunner from the technical who was unarmed lol
-
Now it was game on.
Ibraham had his men start hustling the hostage towards the vehicle park outside while he and the rest played cat and mouse, first with Snow and then with Kerr and Douglas as they left their position and followed on.
The up shot of all this was a lot of gunfire and grenade rolling at close quarters which saw several insurgents downed before Kerr was killed in a shoot out with Ibrahim who himself fell victim to Snow, who then got caught in the blast of her own grenade :'(
-
With the sounds of gunfire ringing in their ears the rest of Ibraham's group got the hostage outside and prepped for exfil. They were accidently aided by Jihadi Jack who commandeered the technical and crashed through the gate with the gunner hanging on for dear life - he didn't hang on for long as he was popped by Douglas stationed outside the main building. This distraction allowed the insurgents to bundle the hostage into a car and exchange shots with Porter who went down.
-
End times were coming now.
Silva's team now left their vantage point and headed for the compound - probably a bit too late. Douglas, hearing the engines of the cars start up headed for the better cover of the external stairs to shoot out the vehicle tyres - alas it was not to be :( Peyman Maadi, who had survived the internal gunfight, rounded the corner and put a burst into Douglas' back :'(
151522 & 151527 - Silva's team on the move
151833/835/844 - death of Douglas
-
Column ho!
Two cars sped out of the compound taking fire from Silva's group as they went, which did slow the vehicles, but remembering the the very clear instruction of no harm to the hostage, the cease fire order was given and the radio call for evac went in.
-
As a mission it was a fail and over half of the Overwatch team were casualties. On the bright side (and there needed to be one!), two local leaders had been killed along with twelve insurgents.
As a game it went well I thought; the tactical plan of the two players was sound and worked well but once the fire support team ran out of targets the breach team (one man down) were on their own and that was the time for the other team to move up. The insurgents were constantly reacting so planning was a bit of a bust lol but they did manage to weather the storm and come out smiling.
From a rules perspective the superior skills of the operators seemed to accurately reflect the advantage skilled professionals have over more numerous opponents but with enough of a risk for things to go wrong. Where the game came slightly unstuck was unfamiliarity; although the Overwatch team all had comms they didn't use it which might have helped with getting help to the breaching team before it went pear shaped, they also had the full bag of tricks (smoke grenades, stun grenades, silencers, etc) available to them but in the excitement of the game that all got forgotten.
-
However, we did have cake!
Many thanks to all the players, oh and by the way, I found the explosion circles :)
-
Exciting looking game fellas.

Forget the western propaganda.
Here is the truth.
We were entertaining a foreign VIP in our compound.
He was enjoying our hospitality.
We posted guards on the rooftops and around the compound as we had heard whispers that the western powers were not happy with our hosting.
Western “bin men” approach our compound.
(https://i.postimg.cc/4dS51SMk/IMG-4110.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zbTKz080)
We were happy with our reception party locations.
(https://i.postimg.cc/V5yWxbmK/IMG-4111.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jnXfN2Wf)
Our men were not happy with the special forces skip divers.
One was removed from the rota.
(https://i.postimg.cc/G3Bw1wbD/IMG-4116.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/jCrkz1wq)
Our RPG operator “successfully” took out opposition players, firing on us from other rooftops, even though he wasn’t aiming at them lol
(https://i.postimg.cc/L5gVQVKq/IMG-4117.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/N2YT5m0Y)
We formed a “team hug” around our VIP visitor.
This team hug was called a tight security ring.
(https://i.postimg.cc/MZhk6PGF/IMG-4118.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/qgXDQGys)
The unwanted visitors breached our compound walls, and started crashing our party.
They moved from room to room, but throwing grenades was not their strongest asset, as their grenade bounced back, and exploded at their own feet. OH DEAR.
(https://i.postimg.cc/NfT3569f/IMG-4119.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hfDyY71H)
Our VIP then joined us for an exciting road trip.

Cheers Ian (nice cake)

Just to add some pictures.
791 & 788 = Target compound
789 = The Market setting up
792 = Tower guards under JC's watchful eye.
793 = Insurgents try sniping with an RPG. "Did you hit him?"
"I hit the building & the building hit him!"
794 & 5 = Into the compound
796 Grenade throwing inside the building goes badly...TWICE !!!
It was down hill from then on, but the cake was lovely. :-*
-
I like Bob’s take on things……the famous Muslim hospitality clearly being put into practice!
-
Now, why would the host of that party feel the need to guard the joint so well? Was it to keep interlopers out, or guests in? My vote is for the latter.
Nice report, though, even if the end result was sub-optimal... ;)
-
Sub-optimal, sub-optimal.
How very dare you.
Our VIP guest had a lovely time, and lots of equipment MAY ? be heading our way. lol
-
Uh huh. It'll all come out in the proverbial wash. Just be careful not to bite the hand that feeds you... 8)
-
Very good AAR.
I look forward to the next game/report.
However, we did have cake!
Reminds me of the end scene from episodes of Danger 5.

Yesterday, I was sent shopping (OMG).
Whilst in the local supermarket, I had a stroll down the toy isle, as I was sure I’d seen someone say, that the supermarket in question stocked some useful civilian vehicles for future games.
They were right.
Looks like I’ll have to build a bus depot now….

Useful for 20mm games, but a little small for 28mm games I think.
-
As well as the supermarket, I popped into the charity shop.
Guess what ?
An odd collection of different scaled vehicles, all at £4 each.
Well, they will be lining the streets of my town too.

-
And finally, from the same charity shop, a couple of modernish ambulances.
Cheep as chips, but after a touch of stain and paint, I’m sure they will be hitting the streets.

Buses, you wait for one for ages and then... lol
Helping charity too, you are nice Bob.
When you want some more 28mm vehicles come and see my stock. :D
-
You've gone mad! lol lol
-
Great finds! They should prove to be very useful....

First two “dirtied up” for the table.

Looking at expanding this into African countries as well as the Middle East.
Fancied some cheap African generic buildings.
Got some cheap MDF buildings from eBay.
As they came with an MDF roof, I added plastic corrugated sheet instead.
First one was a bit boring.
(https://i.postimg.cc/vm1NZKkh/IMG-4340.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Y4H3XdpL)
I progressed with modifying the rooftops.
(https://i.postimg.cc/k4KYxbnt/IMG-4342.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ftWvskSw)
Ongoing houses.

After posting on FB, I had a good comment come in, that they use old tyres and rocks, to keep the corrugated sheeting from blowing away.
So these have now been added.
I’m happy they are now finished.

Lovely work there Bob. 20 or 28mm?
Either way I look forward to playing in a game with them.
-
Love the African buildings Bob
-
Pete
28mm buildings (as they don’t do 20mm), but the intention is to use them with my 20mm African figures.
The 20mm figures are based on pennies, so that makes them a little taller anyway.
-
Nice work on those buildings.
The rocks and tyres make the roofs more interesting.
Depending on you period, bin bags and mattresses are also an option.

If you were to base them on Kruger-Rands they would go up in my estimation. lol lol lol
-
Nice job with the buildings Bob ….particularly like the rust effects, I always end up with mine totally rusted but I like this. Please send me the paint recipe if you get a chance fella.
What’s next?

What’s next?
More Arab mdf buildings under construction.
-
Love those shacks.
They would look quite in place in my People's Republic of Northern Gambola...or in my Balszakistan...
-
Give it a go CapnJim, easy enough to do.
-
Effective looking shacks 8)
-
More Arab mdf buildings made.
Just need some texture and paint adding.

Looking forward to seeing these finished Bob.
Given how much we wargamers love firing down from roofs,
may I suggest you add trapdoors to those roofs without them?
-
Good call Pete.
I hadn’t noticed that.
-
Trapdoors.
Obviously you'll need to include some ladders lol
-
I too am looking forward to seeing these done. Trap doors and all! :D
-
Trapdoors.

You’ll want stairlifts next lol lol

That would be wrong...on so many levels. lol

Reminded me of Gremlins.

Better buses.
Today, whilst out shopping, I noticed a new coach that might be more suitable for 20mm modern games.
Where was I ? Asda in the UK.
A couple of months ago, I found these coaches in Asda, so rushed out and bought three of them. Why three, I’ll never know. lol
(https://i.postimg.cc/d01J53p2/IMG-4336.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/18kxtm9X)
At the time, people asked me if they were a little small for 20mm ? But I convinced myself they were just fine.
(https://i.postimg.cc/CxJFCkPM/IMG-4356.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BjL94LfR)
As you can see, 20mm figures are just too tall compared to the coaches.
Today I found a new range of coaches, so I bought just one of them.
Here it is compared to a couple of 20mm figures.
What do we think size wise ?

(https://i.postimg.cc/Nf6GMWRH/IMG-5352.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/2V5N99ck)
And as a cheeky second item, I bought a tractor and trailer, as I couldn’t resist it.
(https://i.postimg.cc/KvSvmZ3b/IMG-5350.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8s4VHgbX)
I think they’ll both do fine in 20mm games.
-
The 'old' coaches might work, if they (like the infantry) were on bases.
The 'new' coach is fine as it is.
Tractor & trailer... are you reminding me to get on with the farm? lol lol lol
-
The new one is a great fit, nice find!
-
Yeah - the new bus does indeed look the part.
-
Cheers chaps.
I agree, this bus looks far more useable for 20mm.
-
Bob, how are the 'smaller' buses alongside 15mm? Could do for AK47.

Agree Pete.
We could have an “on the buses” battalion lol lol lol
-
" I hate you Butler!" lol lol lol
