Title: Spectre Operations - "The Division" themed miniatures and gaming table.
Post by: DanielB on February 18, 2020, 12:15:58 PM
Greetings all,

I recently discovered this forum as one of the few with a Modern wargaming section, which is awesome! So I thought I'd sign up and share what I've been working on.

As a big fan of the Tom Clancy's Division video game franchise, when I discovered Spectre Operations I just knew I'd have to try and convert the game over to the tabletop, as the Spectre ruleset is perfect for it.

So to allow for a narrative campaign loosely based on the games to be run, I've been collecting and painting miniatures representing the various factions found in the game series, as well as working on building a gaming table based around post-pandemic New York City in winter.

So far I've gotten a 2'x2' gaming table mostly done, and have started to slowly add more terrain to it in expansions as I go.

Here's a few shots of the table in use during a small demo game:

Awesome terrain, I have a friend who worked as a visual artist on the Division - he'd like to see this!

Thanks Ockman, that's awesome. Let me know what your friend thinks.  lol

As for miniatures, I've got a fair few factions painted up - at least a few models for each. Easily the force that is most "complete" is the Rikers faction. These are escaped convicts from Rikers Island prison who have looted police and SWAT equipment during their escape and have take to Manhattan Island to carve out their own kingdom in the lawlessness of the quarrantine zone.

Here's a group shot. Note that I still need to add snow to the bases and finish painting and detailing the Sherman tank. The justification for the tank is that they found it in a WW2 exhibit and looted it for their own purposes. In game terms, a buddy of mine has a BMP and I needed something to counter it. :D

Rikers leadership - Chains, Larae Barrett and 8-Ball along the front, and at the back is a black market fixer who I've named Snoop due to the huge joint he appears to have found from somewhere!  ;D

Below are a bunch of progress shots of the force as I painted up the models/units.

LOVE this!!

Quick question - What did you use as snow on the terrain? - It looks really cool!!

Thanks! :)

The snow is Woodland Scenics snow scatter. Where the snow isn't present, I "painted" the area in neat PVA glue to give it a slight glaze to it to represent wetness or ice.

The other factions I've got painted up aren't anywhere near as far along as the Rikers, but I'll share what progress I have.

I painted up the SHD Agents first out of all the models, so the paint jobs aren't great. I'm thinking of going back over them and trying to improve things with highlights and washes but I guess we'll see how far along I get with it, as I've got a couple of hundred other miniatures to paint for this!

Division (SHD) Agents:

SHD Extreme Environment team - inspired by the Survival game mode, the idea is that they are geared up and prepared to handle extreme weather conditions. These are made from Anvil Industry multipart kits, and also show the Specialisations from the Division 2. I had a lot of fun building these:

A small selection of Rioters - I've got about three times as many as these unpainted sitting in the painting queue. :)

Finally, the Cleaners - again, I've got more of these guys I'm currently painting, and again these are made from Anvil multipart kits (as well as some Hasslefree miniatures):

Very nice looking project!  I'm a big fan of the first installment of "The Division" game too and some time ago even tried to do similar project myself but sadly got distracted by other things.
Here is a few examples of my minis for this project: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=97536.msg1209552#msg1209552

Would be very interesting to watch your progress and especially some new painted minis for Cleaners and LMB. :)

Nimrod, your models are painted to a much much higher standard than mine :D

I've got a ton of miniatures lined up to work on, including a large force of LMB and Black Tusk which will be interchangable with each other for if I need to run more interesting Opfor for the SHD Agents.

The Rioters and Hyenas will be interchangeable as well, as they essentially serve the same purpose in their respective games.

The Cleaners are proving the trickier force to build up, as finding hazmat suits, gas masks, fire axes and flamethrowers in the correct scale is somewhat problematic. I know Empress make gas mask heads with helmets which will be great for the Hyenas, and Crooked Dice make hooded gas mask heads which will be perfect for Cleaners, so I'm considering replacing some of the bare heads on the models I've already painted with these, though I might just sculpt my own instead so as not to ruin the paint jobs.

This is fantastic! I've been hovering around a 20mm division project ever since the original trailer was previewed so many years ago!

You've done a great job, and I really like the use of the Sarissa terrain tiles.

Thanks Splod!

The great thing about Spectre is that you really don't need a lot of models or real estate to have a great campaign. The benefit of the terrain tiles is that I can just pick them up and shuffle them around, add a few vehicles to block line of sight down alleyways and I've got an entirely new gaming table.

I'm adding more of the tiles as I go, and with a few of the "half width" ones and I can break up the straight lines between the structures to add even more interesting combinations of the ones I have complete.

This last week I've been painting up some more Cleaner models, which I'm hoping to have finished by the weekend, so hopefully photos will follow! :D

The benefit of basing my forces and campaigns on the game series is that there's always more being added - and with Warlords of New York releasing for the Division 2 on 3rd March I'll have even more narritive to draw inspiration from.

I've been working on translating the SHD Tech skills into useable gear in the tabletop game, and I think I'm finding a decent groove to it. So far I've got Pulse, Seeker Mine, Mobile Cover and Turret hammered down. I'll be testing them in a few games hopefully next week! :D

I had a go at the house rules for the SHD skills from The Division. Here's what I have so far.

Hopefully the formatting won't break but here are are. Let me know what you think.

Pulse

Used in the Movement and Tactical actions phase, the Pulse reveals all Hidden models and objectives within D6+Command radius of the model using the pulse.

First Aid

Deployed in the Movement and Tactical Actions phase. Stems bleeding on one target within 6" and line of sight.

Support Station

Deployed in the Movement and Tactical Actions phase, place a support station model in base to base contact with the model carrying it. Stems bleeding on all targets within 12" of the support station.

Sticky Bomb

RI 12"

LTY NA

PEN NA

Special Rules

Blast 3", EMP/Flashbang/Frag

The Stick Bomb launcher fires one of three ammo types - EMP, Flashbang, or Frag. Which ammo type is being used must be declared before firing, in the same way as a grenade launcher.

Turret

RI 8"

LTY 5+

PEN 5

Special Rules

Automatic, Autonomous (SG 2, DC 1)

Autonomous: All models with the Autonomous rule will always have a Shooting and a Defence statistic listed in brackets after the Autonomous listing in their special rules. They are placed in the Movement and Tactical Actions phase, and are set up by the model carrying it and remains there for the rest of the game or until destroyed. The model follows all the rules for Overwatch, however it always fires on automatic - meaning it fires 3 shots but with a -2 shooting modifier.

Seeker Mine

RI 12"

LTY 5+

PEN 5

Special Rules

Blast 2", Multi Blast 2, Seeker

Seeker: no line of sight needed, does not scatter.

Ballistic Shield (Deflector)

Half sized shield. When a model carrying the Deflector Shield is hit, but before rolling Lethality, roll a D6. On a result of a 6, the round is deflected away from the shield. Centre a 2" blast marker on the model and roll a D3 for scatter - the round can only scatter in a 180 degree arc from the front of the model. The round is deflected and can strike any other single model within 1 range interval - using the profile of the weapon used to fire at the model with the Deflector shield.

Smart Cover

Deployed in the Movement and Tactical Actions phase onto a piece of cover within 6" of the model carrying it. Removes all Suppression points (but not suppression levels) from any unit in base to base with that cover.

Mobile Cover

Used in the Movement and Tactical Actions phase, a model carrying mobile cover may deploy it as a Tactical Action. This places a piece of 50% obscuring cover with a footprint no more than 25mm x 25mm, touching the model's base within the model's line of sight. A model deploying Mobile Cover cannot shoot in the Combat phase.

Chem Launcher

RI 12"

LTY NA

PEN NA

Special Rules

Blast 3", Ensnare/Firestarter.

The Chem Launcher can fire either of two ammo types - Ensnare or Firestarter.

Ensnare rounds do no damage but pin in place any model at least partially caught in the blast. Ensnare lasts D3 turns or until the effected models pass a Command test to free themselves.

Firestarter rounds cover an area in a scentless flammable gas that can be ignited with gunfire. Any model caught in the cloud when it is ignited is immediately Burning and follows all the rules for this.

Drone - coming soon.

Firefly - coming soon.

Hive

RI 6"

LTY NA

PEN NA

Special Rules

Hive, Defence 1, Charges (4)

The Hive is deployed in the Movement and Tactical Actions phase by the model carrying it. It can be thrown like a grenade. Wherever it lands, place a Hive marker on the battlefield. It remains there until it is destroyed or it's charges are depleted. A Hive is a small target, meaning that any model shooting at the Hive suffers a -1 modifier in addition to any other shooting modifiers they are subject to. Once deployed, a Hive has a 12" area of effect. Any model entering the area of effect of a Hive is targeted by it, and the rules for the ammunition type it is loaded with are applied to the model.

Hive Ammunition - Booster, Wasp, Repair

Booster Ammunition - Targets Friendly Models only. Removes the Movement and Shooting penalties of Suppression levels for D3 turns. Does not reduce the Suppression level or remove Suppression points.

Repair Ammunition - Targets Friendly Models only. Applies a +1 Lethality bonus to the effected model to a maximum of 6+ (making a LTY 4+ a 5+, etc), but only against the next successful hit against the effected model. This stacks with any existing body armour the model may be wearing.

Wasp Ammunition - Targets Enemy models only. SG 6. Hits the effected model with a 5+ Lethality, Penetration 5 shooting attack.

Hi everyone,

It's been a while, but I've been working on some of my other hobbies. I've spent the last couple of weeks painting models after the wargaming bug bit again. Here's some photos of what I've been working on.

Firstly, Aaron Keener and the Warlords of New York. These will be the overarching "big bad" of the campaign I'm working on.

Keener himself:

James Dragov and Theo Parnell:

Vivian Conley and Javier Kajika:

Next, a CIA covert ops cell:

A small squad of Outcast terrorists:

The Outcast logo painted on the hoods of a couple of infantry - in the game they make ponchos out of quarantine cladding, so I wanted to try and replicate that:

More to come...

Very cool, I don't know if you have used any of them. But minibits has some good options for guys with there militia miniatures lines.
I am thinking the urban militia/rioters, survivelists and maybe African militia might work for some of the factions.

My wallet would disagree with you.  lol

On that subject, here's a few more of the miniatures I've been working on:

12 more Hyena gang members:

And a group shot of the full Hyena force so far:

At the opposite end of the spectrum, here are the Black Tusk Special Unit (BTSU) - a special operations team and the best of the best from the Black Tusk PMC. In game terms, they are Elite tier infantry, whereas the rest of the Black Tusk PMC will be Professional tier. These guys will be fielded either as a unit, or broken down and used as leader characters for 'regular' Black Tusk infantry.

There are two named characters in the force. Front and centre is Bardon Schaeffer, the 2IC of the Black Tusk. On the left of Schaeffer is Petrus Brenner, a dedicated marksman and the BTSU officer in charge of securing the Pentagon and DARPA labs for the PMC's mysterious benefactors.

More BTSU characters will be added as I go. I've currently got Milla Radek, call sign "Wyvern", on the painting table almost complete. She is the BTSU leader of the Tidal Basin garrison in Washington DC.

BTSU:

The range is great for mixing and matching. The african militia, cartel and criminal element ranges are fantastic models. I'm hoping they expand the MENA regular range somewhere down the line, as they work great for a generic UN nation military police force.

Thanks guys. I wanted to do a little something different from the "normal" middle eastern conflict, so I opted for something I'm a bit more knowledgeable on. :D

To keep the ball rolling, I've been working on some Cleaners - NYC sanitation workers who have banded behind one Joseph Ferro, a bit of a conspiracy nut who was finally right when the Dollar Flu hit - though not for any conspiracy he'd ever imagined! His wife was one of the early victims of the virus, and now he seeks to 'save the world' by eradicating it by whatever means necessary. In his eyes, he's the hero, and building a future for his niece is his primary motivator. He leads the Cleaners with a fanatical will, almost like a demagogue, driving them to use fire to burn out the infection - and any living thing they believe to be infected.

In miniatures terms, I used a bunch of parts from Anvil Industry kits to knock together a Ferro model based on the in game character and concept art: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/_Oyt3ebyUdI/maxresdefault.jpg

The photos are a little cruel, and I've already spotted a few bits that need touching up. I fully built the model before painting - which was a mistake. I'm making a similar figure to act as one of Ferro's henchmen - Kosinski - and I'll certainly be learning from that mistake this time! :D

Thanks guys :)

I wanted to make Joe Ferro something more than just a regular Spectre miniature with standard rulebook equipment, so I figured I'd try and make him a little unique. I'll have to playtest him to ensure he's not too overpowered, but I think he'll be fine.

So here's what I came up with for him:

Joe Ferro - Cleaner commander.

CD 4
AG 3
SG 4
DC 3
ME 3

Weapons: Cleaner Incinerator, Close Combat Weapon, 3x Molotov Cocktail
Equipment: Heavy Body Armour, Respirator, Cleaner Improvised Armour

Cleaner Incinerator: Using a particularly volatile mix of oil and chemicals, the Cleaner Incinerator is a super-charged flamethrower. It follows all the rules for Flamethrowers, however it has a RI of 12". However, if the fuel tank is ruptured, the resulting explosion uses the larger, 4" template.

Cleaner Improvised Armour: Cleaners are known to bolt extra metal plates onto their body armour, and adorn their gear with bags, satchels and toolboxes filled with scrap metal to form a crude form of protection from incoming fire. Cleaner Improvised Armour allows the wearer to re-roll any roll of a 1 on a DC test.

To go along with the extra rules, here's some extra pictures of the miniature, this time in better lighting:

The next model being a Division agent based on my own in-game character. :)

I took a Spectre mini, and added a new backpack with a Dark Zone contaminated loot bag and a ballistic mask attached, an ISAC node, arm patch, SHD ID band, agent watch, and a shotgun sheath with a baseball bat stowed in it, all from green stuff.

Glad you are back on this. I have been following it from the start and I agree it is good to see something other than SEALs vs Muslim baddies of various locals. That is why I have been looking into some French centric works lately. Another "post apoc" setting I would like to pursue is some of the factions in Morrow Project, but as unit battles as opposed to RPGing.

Another blast from the past.
That is one of the reasons I (currently) have two of Empress's V100 Commandos.
