Title: Battle of Shrewsbury 1069; Watchtower Interval!- Page 2
Post by: Atheling on February 21, 2020, 01:27:42 PM
It does what it says on the tin. I painted a section of a wall!  :D

First of many terrain pieces by Grand Manner (the best for historical IMHO)

It's a very small part of a much larger Motte-and-Bailey for the Battle/Siege of Shrewsbury 1069 game.

I bought these terrain pieces way back in the early 2000's and to my blushing shame I haven;t painted a single piece. It has just sat in a box and waited for the day! Of course that day never seemed to be right so I'm extra relieved (and excited!) to have the resins cleaned up and some of the pieces undercoated ready for some brushwork.

I've put a bit of effort into the details on the model. If it's there paint it, right? :)

You should be ashamed, that's outrageous! None of us buy stuff that then goes on a shelf for years unpainted, we all paint our stuff straight away. Bad boy, dirty boy, in your basket!

Laughed out loud! - I found some unpainted figures the other day I bought 35 years ago. You know, when it was 25mm not 28mm!  - really must put a brush on them! (Nice walls by the way!)

lol I dare not delve too deep into the cupboard of doom- "They delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled"  lol

Thanks :)

Thanks :) I'm finding it difficult to find the adjectives to make the project sound more interesting  lol

Yeah, the pics are the same ones that were taken for thew Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. Also I haven't had a chance to paint up any new 11th Century miniatures that would look the part. I've painted plenty of Almoravids but they would just look plain weird next to a Motte and Bailey ;) :)

I'll stick the odd bowman/crossbowman in next time.

Thanks  :)

I bought the whole Motte and Bailey unpainted about 20 years ago. The whole thing cost less then £150 at the time so it was quite cheap really. I just have to paint them myself :)

Grand Manner stuff is now painted in house which explains the price. It's how the company originally started doing business- with painted resins.

lol Yeah, but nigh on 20 years is pushing things a little  lol

I found 5 packets of Minifigs ACW minis with a price label from the Guard Room. Price had faded and most of the minifig labels had been "Eaten". I think I must have bought them in mid - late 80's. I used to go to Vauxhall Motors in Luton, on courses and would pop in there!

I had some pre-slotta Citadel stuff that got stashed away so 'well' that when I eventually found them years (re: decades) later they were grey and flaking  :'(

I really loved those old Citadel mini's too  :-[

Hello, my name is Levied Troop and I have quite a bit of unpainted AWI Grand Manner from 20 years ago.
One day I hope to paint it as nicely as those walls - which just need some Foorsore Baron’s War figures in front of them  :)

The terrain pieces will be graced with some Footsore mini's, but not from the Baron's War range :)

There's the small matter of a lot of Sub Roman terrain items and that whopping great Teutonic castle that seems to be no longer available to paint up too!  :o o_o  lol

I think I did well to buy the raw resin when I did!  8)

BTW Breezer, was the £900 the Grand Manner Wargames Standard or Collectors Standard?

Title: Re: Battle of Shrewsbury 1069; Town Interior Buildings I
Post by: Atheling on March 03, 2020, 08:36:44 AM
I have found time to continue work on some of the buildings that will act as either the suburbs of Shrewsbury or stand stand inside the Motte and Bailey.

I made a scratch built model of a Saxon house about 20 years ago and a chap at the SESWC club in Edinburgh, the owbner of Stronghold Miniatures, offered to cast me a number up for me.

Here's one of then castings tarted up- there are more but I plan to use the thatch on some of the buildings to substitute for burning thatch by adding wire wool suitably sprayed to make it look like smoke. An idea stolen from James Morris when i attended one of the fab Newark WAB Campain Days of yesteryear.

Title: Re: Battle of Shrewsbury 1069; Watchtower Interval!

Perhaps too soon for comfort I found myself getting a little tired of painting up the Bailey walls and the interior buildings.

So, I decided to paint up a watch tower for a bit of relief!

The model is produced by Grand Manner; I was lucky enough to have bought it many years ago when you could still buy 'raw' resin which is great as it enables me to keep painting the buildings to my taste.

If your interested some scenario and painting information as well as more pics are on my blog:
