Title: S Gauge tank car sought...
Post by: Ignatieff on February 22, 2020, 04:23:28 PM
Does anyone do these?  It can either be a one, two or three dome tank car, dont really mind.  I fancy putting together a Babylon Berlin style scenario with Bolo tank cars full of phosgene/gold/party hats, etc..  I had hoped a HO scale one would be good enough to pull it off, but its not.  Any and all help greatly appreciated.

thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

Where are you based?  In the USA there seem to be a number of suppliers: Lionel's American Flyer range has a bogie tank wagon, but that looks very American and will cost you more than 50 dollars. Here in the UK S, or 1/64 has always been a niche scale with everything built from scratch. There are some talented modellers and and a tiny bit of trade support, but nothing ready to run. Check here for an overview: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/50177-welcome-to-s-scale/

Interestingly, that page also mentions an obscure former East German S scale range StadtilmerBahn which still has its devotees and may well meet your needs, but no doubt commands high prices on the collectors market!

My advice would be to forget S, which would be a bit small for 28mm anyway (assuming that's what your figures are) and go for the Sarissa Railway lasercut range - this includes a tank wagon which is a bit basic, but is already 1/56 and should be relatively easy to detail.

Good luck,
Peter

Babylon Berlin style scenario with Bolo tank cars

For a setup in Germany at that time I could recommend Fleischmann Magic Train. It's out of production, but available on Ebay. There are even properly lettered tank cars for the Deutsche Reichsbahn:

These are narow gauge O scale models that run on H0/00 tracks.
