Title: Darathar's 20mm Sci-fi (with Stormtroopers)
Post by: Darathar on February 26, 2020, 12:10:52 PM
So I've fallen hard for 20mm Sci-fi & post apocalyptic minis over the past year and a half. It all started with Gaslands as it sent my creativity into overdrive creating crazy builds out of die casts using 20mm figures in them, and then I found some lines of 20mm sci-fi and haven't looked back. Now there isn't that many lines of 20mm sci-fi but as I found out something wierd happens when your not spoiled for choice... You actually finish projects  lol.

I've got loads done and I'll take pics later but I'll start with my Elheim miniatures Future US forces.

Also in there is an infinity mech repurposed as a light Walker.
I'll take better pics of all I've made so far and upload them soon cheers from reading  :).

Lovely stuff!

Got quite a few Elhiem figures, starting to get back into 20mm again and was looking at those future troops as like a Ultra Modern/Near Future task force.

Brilliant! I still have to find time to paint more in 20mm, but the cheap and easy availability of die cast cars is so cool.

Thanks everyone good to see others who like 20mm sci-fi out there.
Next up I reskined a Northstar wasteland warrior as a sci-fi rogue.

I'm slowly making a rogue stars or MDRG small scale skirmish group just finding other alien scum to join him.

The warboy painted blue works really nice.

MDRG would be a fun system, but I have no idea how to proxy all those beastmen....maybe 1/72 plastc fantasy?

Otherwise, I would suggest looking for the (now free) Killzone rules by Nick Lund. They are less heroic and focus on orders and equipment.

Thanks DivisMal I'll make sure I check them out. Yeah I think I'd do certain fantasy figures for them if I do.

Next up is some gangers from Northstar, these figures feel like necromunda figures to me more than the new GW plastics as I loved the old metal range great sculpts by Mark Copplestone :).

Do those mutated beastmen need to be 20mm? Go 28! That radiation has caused some rampant growth...

Hey D, can you do a direct link for the Future US forces. Seems I am failing horribly.

Also, love to see better closer pics when you get that minute.

Both are Elhiem minis with a gasmask added to one with green stuff hair, the fox guy is a Elhiem SAS model with a reaper familiar Fox cut up and added to it.

Finished the Two sci-fi Mercs. First is a starlord inspired character used Elhiem's angry max figure cut off his head and used a Elhiem gasmask and sculpted some hair on him. The humanoid fox Soldier is from a reaper familiar cut up and an Elhiem SAS soldier body.

This looks great!. I have been thinking of doing a near future sci-fi collection to go with all my 20mm moderns. I had planned to start by adding gundam model kits as large Mechs

Apart from the Gundams have you found any other mechs that are or would look good with 20mm?
Title: Re: Darathar's 20mm Sci-fi (new with Robots W.I.P)
Post by: Darathar on May 12, 2020, 07:35:24 AM
Sure do. So I use either S5 (large infantry) or tag models from infinity, the ratnik in the first image is an S5 model. Been looking at deadzone mechs from mantic.

I've seen these used before on Facebook.

https://blackdog-model.com/en-kategorie_689605-0-scifi.html

I started using tau suit minis from GW for an alien race that uses minimal infantry with tough mechs.

20mm is in that sweet spot where you can argue most mechs work for it.

Also hotwheels has halo warthogs! This one is unmanned I'm making them with drivers and gunners, the joy in my face getting vehicles for $2 each  :D.

I like the idea that a rusted combat robot indicates how dangerous it is. A new robot isn't battle tested yet, but something beat to hell has seen lots of combat, and perhaps outlived the limited warranty lol. Chances are good it has some quirks that have allowed for survival all those years. Or maybe it is just like the robot version of Mr. Miyagi, Yoda, or other wizened old masters.

Painted up some nurglings they're small enough for 15mm and up so I think they fit 20mm pretty well. If anything they seem a little more imposing.

Great cast of characters all around. Very inspirational.
My favorite would be the fox soldier, he just looks amazing and I might have to make one myself :)

I love this thread!
I've been collecting 20mm post apoc minis throughout 2020 to give a go in 2021 and elheim has also been a pretty good source for me as well.

Can't wait to see what you cook up next.

Thanks so much everyone. Jack Hooligan keen to see what you make in 20mm. Redmao would be cool to see your take on the fox solider.

Next up I've made a bounty hunter inspired by the Mandalorian, used a dark alliance stalker model with a reaper head and a mantic forge father's bit for the end of the energy rifle.

Next robot is done  :).

While the last one could have been either good or bad this one no doubt has bad intentions. It's the start of a rival crew of less than savoury characters.

Cheers for reading.

How'd you get this robot off the thick, hard plastic base it comes on? Careful cutting with a hobby knife?

Nice project, I’ve got a LOT of 20mm sci-fi/post apoc collected for a project, I have all the dark alliance sets, plus maybe 50 stalkeresque conversion, plus I have 3D printed hundreds of figs in resin

Next up is a new Elhiem mini I had commissioned a battle robot.

I think it turned out great there is more sculpts of this style robot to come and you better believe I've bought loads to paint. I figured these would easily help add a sci-fi touch to most 20mm Morden armies with these forming the front line as the more expendable troops with spec ops and other specialist forces behind them in battle.

Some really nice stuff in this thread, glad that you decided to revisit it. I'm just about to start a 20mm project myself with all my old Dark Future and the Copplestone Gaslands figures. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with and thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone.

Been printing off a whole heap of different ideas while still supporting and converting a bunch of minis from different 20mm sources.

Here is a papsikels cyberpunk MMA fighter I printed off perfect for my Neo-tokyo streets.

She was printed off on a anycubic photon mono 4k at 70% it's crazy how much detail is in there.

Much more to come.
