Title: [Commercial] Wars of Ozz - Mass Fantasy Battle Retail Release
Post by: Chris Abbey on February 26, 2020, 12:18:25 PM
This thread is for sharing news, photos and battle reports of Wars of Ozz, the 28mm Mass Fantasy Battle game from Old Glory.

The game world is based heavily on the original L. Frank Baum books, but with its own unique twist..
This is a totally new approach to mass fantasy battles combining 'Napoleonic' style infantry, cavalry and artillery with witches, wizards, giants, trolls and all manner of other fantastical creatures.

Today we take a look at the strange creatures serving King Jack.

Great Pumpkin Heads and Harvesters
Coming from the land of Harvest are the ferocious, dangerous, gigantic Great Pumpkins often accompanied by the lesser pumpkin heads known as Harvesters. These strange beings and other such creatures are a product of centuries of evolution and are led by the Lord of the Harvest, King Jack. They are loyal to any side that serves their purpose.

This all looks cool...but visited the site, see pics, but don’t see where any of this is actually available for purchase?? Just “coming soon”.

So is this just a pimp thread to create awareness?
Title: Re: Wars of Ozz - Mass Fantasy Battle

Yes, creating awareness, letting people know what's coming and what the game is all about and giving folks the option to join the Facebook Group or subscribe to Newsletter from the page if they want to keep in the loop.

In the US there are participation games running at Cold Wars in March, in the UK Sally 4th should have painted units on display at Salute and looking to launch late spring / early summer if all goes well.

I recently finished painting the Munchkin regiment of Colonel Tictoc for our demo games at Cold Wars in March.

And am now currently working on a Munchkin regiment of Light Cavalry.  Painting these is certainly a horse of a different color!  :)

Wars of Ozz Press Release 1:
Release Date: 2nd March 2020
Wars of Ozz is a 28mm Mass Fantasy Battle Game inspired by the ‘Oz’ series of books written by L. Frank Baum between 1900 and 1920. The inspirational literature has been greatly expanded by Russ Dunaway, to form a unique new fantasy gaming world to battle over, populated with Munchkins, Quadlings, Winkies and Gillikins combined with Witches, Wizards, Pumpkin Men, animated Scarecows and Tinmen, Giants, Trolls, Skeletons and much, much more.
The miniatures range has been designed, sculpted and manufactured by Old Glory and when fully released will include 60 packs of miniatures.

The ‘Wars of Oz’ rules are written by Buck Surdu, author of Gaslight and Combat Patrol among many more published works. The game is a mass battle rather than a skirmish game. Infantry units are 20 strong, mounted 4 to a base. Two or more units of Infantry, Cavalry or Artillery are formed into a Brigade and an Army is comprised of one or more Brigades. The game is designed to be played on a standard 6’ x 4’ wargames table, with a typical game reaching its conclusion in two to three hours. The rulebook covers the background and history of Ozz, army building, movement, melee, ranged combat, magic and morale together with points lists for tournament play, scenarios, maps, campaign and painting guides.

The plan is for Wars of Ozz to be launched via a four week Kickstarter in May 2020. Kickstarter backers will be sent a Playtest / Beta PDF version of the rules so that they can start playing straight away using proxies or miniatures from an initial limited release of 6 packs, released in advance to facilitate playtesting. Kickstarter pledges will be shipped 6 months after Kickstarter completion, at which time ‘Wars of Ozz’ will be made available as a general retail release. The Kickstarter will be run by Sally 4th who are also publishing the rules and distributing the miniature range under licence in the UK & Europe, in partnership with Old Glory who will be shipping to USA and the rest of the world.

A look at 'The Winkies'

The Winkies are a warlike and rugged people who originated from the Cold Barren Mountains and the great Black Forest to eventually settle in the plains just South of these regions. They are fiercely loyal to the sorceress Evanora who, along with her sister Elepheba, controls these regions.

The Winkies and the Gillkins are not the best of friends and have on many occasions engaged in armed conflict. Only the shaky alliance between the sisters Evanora and Elepheba keep the alliance together. They march into battle with spears only except for a few expert marksmen. These marksmen who have spent their lives hunting deep in the depths of the Black Forest are armed with crude fire arms and are few in number. Often times these marksmen can be seen emerging from the Black Forest with the pelts of the DireWolves, the Dire Lions, and even occasionally the pelt of the giant Dire Bear!

The Mounted Winkies ride the great Zilk (Killer Birds) and giant boars. The Winkie armies are led into battle by three great Winkie Warlords: 1. Zephaph the Skull Crusher, riding his great boar and carrying his oversized war club. 2. Zerde the Slasher, mounted on his Zilk with a sword in each hand. 3 Frotham the Terrible, with a great axe riding his Zilk.

The "Wars of Ozz" demo team ran two very successful games at last weekend's Cold Wars convention.  Friday night featured a WInkie and Gillikin Allied attack on a Munchkin village. Sacrificing large numbers to get a couple of their Brigades in a good striking position, the Winkies were able to crack the Munchkin center, ensuring their victory.

Saturday Afternoon was meeting engagement between a combined WInkie Gillikin force against an allied Munchkin and Quadling force.  Both side were tasked with getting as many units as possible within a foot of the enemy's home table edge.  A last minute dash by a unit of Winkie Zolk cavalry grabbed the victory again in another close game.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the games; and rules author, Buck Surdu, was able to get a good list of notes on aspects to tweak before the Kickstarter arrives in May.

Nice work sharing your thoughts on the demo games. Was there a good balance of magic being used by players against their opponents during the game?

Cheers,

Helen

Helen-
Thank!   We never introduced the magic rules to the players.  Being the first time we were introducing the rules to the public, we were trying to keep things to the base mechanics so as not to overwhelm them or us with getting a feel for how things work.

Over Easter weekend I got to paint my first unit of Quadling line infantry, and very smart they look to in their red coats and lace.

The miniatures were a joy to paint, and the Inline Alpha contrast paints I used went on very well. Next unit on my painting desk is 'Tin men'.

This is all pulling me in, I love the Oz stories and aesthetic... the miniatures look great... I'm not really on for a big army game in 28mm though.
Still, I'm curious how much Oz flavor comes through... skeletons?

At very least I'm going to have to have some munchkins... and flying monkeys... and those pumpkins...

Before the Necron, before the Terminator, before even the Droids there were 'Tinmen'. No one was sure if Professor Nitpicks inventions were powered by mechanics or magic, but only the bravest would stand fast against them!

Those look great, Chris!

Last Saturday we played another long distance game, this time using Discord.  Buck Surdu acted as Gamemaster, and fellow demo team member Greg Priebe and I were the players.  We did the Attack/Defend scenario from the rulebook, pitting a Winkie-Gilliken alliance force, commanded by Greg, against my Quadlings.  It was an exciting see-saw battle!

I'm painting a Quadling Light & Medium Artillery Battery this weekend, so hopefully will have some photos to share next week.
These and the Gilikin Artillery that I am also working on will give me enough units for a 25 points per side game, and Buck has recently added some solo rules to provide semi-intelligent opposition, so I'm looking forward to being able to add some battle reports soon as well.

Great Flying Apes! These are fielded, five to a unit... they are big models. Commonly seen, and a bit cheaper when serving under Evora the Witch in Winkies armies, but also available as an 'allied' troop choice.

I've just finished painting Red Battery, Quadling Artillery (R Btty QA).
It's a Medium Artillery piece with 5 Quadling Gunners. I've mounted the figures on 25mm bases, the gun on a rectangular base and then made a special movement tray to hold them all together. In the game individual figures are removed to record losses.

Nothing says 'Ozz' quiet like a unit of Lesser Pumpkin Head Infantry.
Last weekend I finished painting and basing my first unit of Pumpkin Heads in the service of King Jack.
In Wars of Ozz, these are an allied troop choice so can serve with any faction.

One of the other units I painted last week for Wars of Ozz was the Skeleton Infantry. These can be purchased from the Winkie Army List or other factions can purchase them as allies (for a slightly greater cost). Witches can also summon them using 'Raise Dead' spell or the great summoning bell.

Yes, that's a great looking set up, Chris!  Looking forward to seeing how the battle develops.

In other news, rules author, Buck Surdu, hosted a virtual Ozz game this past weekend for Greg Priebe and I on Zoom, and we recorded the entire game to post online.     It is now available on Youtube for anyone interested in seeing how the rules play.  The video starts off with the multiscreen view we commanders had, and then switches to a full table view so you can better follow the action. Also, note the rules are still under final development so there will be points where we discuss various rules and how they are working; but in general the basic mechanics are all there.

robh- Chris Abbey build those buildings from food container bottoms, and 3D printed roofs.   I believe that the plan is to produce something similar for the range, but not these identically.

The buildings in the photos were made by me, with modified 3D prints from other buildings for the roof and 'Starbucks' cups for the base. However we do have someone working on some buildings that we will be able to cast.

The world of Ozz is home to many mysterious and fantastical creatures and peoples who can be hired as allies or mercenaries to fight alongside any factions army. Each unit brings with it some unique ability; may be it can fly or it is harder to target with shooting or lowers it's enemies resolve or throws stones as effectively as cannon fire.

.......the free give away pack on the Wars of Ozz kickstarter campaign.

As a Kickstarter exclusive are these characters going to available as an add on purchase or limited strictly to the army level pledges?

Also if the units are 5 bases of 4 figures (20 in total) what is the extra figure supplied with each 21 figure KS unit?
Title: Re: [Kickstarter] Wars of Ozz - Mass Fantasy Battle

We said that we were giving them away for free, I don't think we've decided if we will have them as an add-on too, but can't see it being a problem. Will run it past Russ.

Cavalry and Infantry units have 5 bases of troops and an extra base with a mounted commander, I've not had the casts through for these yet, so they are not shown in photographs.

Our land of Ozz had its actual conception in the 1950s. As a little boy growing up in Iowa it was a yearly family event to gather round the TV with a bucket of popcorn to watch the Wonderful Wizard Oz. ( I still prefer it in black and white)
With a huge interest in military history and little toy army men I was always enamored with the Winkie palace guard and with what, I am sure very few others noticed -- the little Munchkin soldiers in Napoleonic style dress that appeared as Dorothy happily exited the little Munchkin village on her perilous journey.
This all indicated to me that there had been, and were armies as well as military engagements in this wonderful land of Oz?
Also, as little Dorothy merrily skipped down the yellow brick road, one could see fields, forests, fence lines ( who built the fences and why),etc. What was out in these lands beyond this yellow brick road, who inhabited this vast strange world we never got a glimpse of, why were there castles were just a few of the things my young mind would ponder?
Years flew by, my interest in military history and little army men only grew. Also, a new interest emerged-- Middle Earth and Hyboria.
Then in 2013 the movie "Oz the great and powerful" was released, I loved it -- and the  thoughts all came flooding back. Why not create my own world based on the fantastic world of Baum? Write my own story, make my own world where we could find those people, those creatures, the history of this strange and wonderful place ---all that was beyond that yellow brick road?
Mix in my historical interests, along with my interests  in fantasy and Oz?
Now to find a person that owned a soldier company -- HEY-- wait a MINUTE- I own a soldier company I suddenly realized !!
So, with pen and paper --off I went on my own Journey into MY land of Ozz. Creating it's own history, places, people, etc.
Next, I needed a known and accomplished rule writer as an accomplice-- I had known John Buck Surdu for years. I asked, he accepted so here we are with that.
Then I needed a techie person to do all this KS stuff -- as I am extremely "tech challenged" this was an absolute necessity-- enter Chris Abbey and Sally 4th to fearlessly lead us to this point.
A big THANK YOU to all who back this project and help build this into a reality.
I have many more wonderful and fantastical things in store for the future -- some in the works already?
What lands, creatures, and peoples lay beyond the Great Nonastic ocean, the Great impassable Desert of the South, The Forbidden lands of the West, and the Great Frozen  North.
Of course, any of your concepts will be greatly appreciated and considered.

Ok, Chris has me teetering on the edge here.  I like the look of the models, I like what I have read of the rules.  At the same time $200 for just enough figures for me to play and $400 for both sides, is a little steep on a teachers salary (I with Monday Knight Productions made enough to support this, but alas, no).  But I also do not want another "FlintLoque" situation on my hands.  I have stacks of figures and before I could even get them painted, FlintLoque was gone.  Anyone out there interested in giving a push one way or another?  :-)
Title: Re: [Kickstarter] Wars of Ozz - Mass Fantasy Battle
Post by: Chris Abbey on July 05, 2020, 01:55:38 PM
Well, I can't really give an unbiased opinion, as Sally 4th is publishing the book and is the European Distributor, however I was amazed that Old Glory could produce the figures so cheaply. It is a mass battle game, with units of 20 figures, which is going to make the overall project more expensive than games like Saga or Congo. An infantry regiment costs £32 for 20 foot figures plus a mounted officer, thats £1.45 per figure. The average cost for 28mm figures is around £2 with many companies charging £3-£5 for (niche) fantasy figures. Some of the figures are huge such as units of Zilk Cavalry and Pumpkin Men that weigh in at 650g for a unit.

As far as longevity goes, Old Glory are doing the figures they have been around for a long, long time and this project is Russ's personal baby. I've seen the stuff that is in the pipeline.. it's going to be supported for a long time. Some of our early feedback from Kickstarter play testers have said that 'Wars of Ozz' is the best H&M ruleset that they have played, ever, which is quiet a statement, and I know that their is plans afoot to use the core mechanisms for historical H&M periods and there is even talk of a board game / campaign battle generator.

Wars of Ozz Solo by design

Wars of Ozz has been designed from the start to suit all styles of play including Solo, two player and team play. Today we are going to look at the mechanics that support solo play.
The Double Random™ Activation mechanic used in Wars of Ozz™ provides a fair amount of friction and randomness to activation especially when combined with the ‘Posture’   of the programmed, non-human opponent.  ‘Posture’ is the solo mechanic that influences the decisions for the non-human player that a human opponent would normally make, providing a more challenging experience for the solitaire player.

Posture represents the opponent’s attitude toward the game.  Game events and results influence Posture, and Posture is reflected in the actions that units take.  An aggressive opponent will have units that shoot and move more than a defensive opponent.  In Wars of Ozz™, Posture is a numerical value that is evaluated every time the turn ends.  There are a range of Postures, chosen to reflect the confidence of the opponent.  More confident opponents are more likely to be active, advancing and probing.  Less confident opponents are more likely to be reactive, defending objectives and returning fire.  Normal opponents use a blended approach.  The opponent’s Posture is affected by three things:
•   Winning,
•   Force Morale, and
•   Troop Losses.
All these factors can be reduced to a number and calculated to derive an overall force posture.   Posture in turn influences the actions of the opponent.

For example, people who think they are winning often play more aggressively and take greater risks than might otherwise be prudent.  Force morale is a critical influence on the posture of an army.  If the soldiers think they are losing, it makes the commander’s life harder.  These combined with relative casualty numbers feed into an armies ‘Posture’

(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/029/853/588/61ee147fcde340ae5f1aae657f58e63c_original.jpg?ixlib=rb-2.1.0&w=700&fit=max&v=1594995206&auto=format&frame=1&q=92&s=3eb83268a08862ddafd83d4aac8c1187)

Posture is cumulative. This turns results are added to the preceding turns posture to determine the overall ‘feeling of the army’ at that time. This ranges from Overconfident to Hopeless. See Posture Table for details. The Posture that the enemy army is at determines which table is used when an enemy unit activates. Let’s assume our army is ‘Aggressive’. Before we activate the next unit we roll ad D10 and consult the table. We rolled a 7, so the unit must  “Attack!”  Charge toward the nearest enemy unit in that unit’s front or flank zone.

This system neatly models the changing overall ‘Posture’ of an army, and applies it to individual unit activations, providing an enjoyable and challenging solo gaming experience.

Wars of Ozz™ began as idea that Russ Dunaway of Old Glory had been planning for several years.   He has often asserted that as a miniatures manufacturer, he wanted to do something new and different, but that just about every period and genre had already been done many times.  In developing both the figures and the rules, we wanted to steer away from copyright infringement, and there have been whole books written on the legal maneuverings of Disney and MGM over Oz rights.  That is why we spell Ozz with to z’s.  Wars of Ozz™ is based on the Oz of the L. Frank Baum novels (in the public domain), but it is different.

Ozz is set in a horse and musket, massed battle, post-apocalyptic world (what isn’t these days?).  In the “last great war,” the Madness Bombs were released, and as biological and chemical weapons are wont to do, the effects grew out of control very quickly.  The war ended, but no one even remembers who won or what the war was about.  For hundreds of years the survivors were beset by manias of all sorts.   The effects of the Madness Bombs also caused mutations such as, but not limited to,  pumpkin-headed men, giants and trolls, witches and wizards, and Gillikins and Winkies.  After hundreds of years of tribalism and chaos, Zoraster the Wizard arrived and began to reestablish order based loosely on the Baum books.  The Munchkins under Zoraster and Quadlings under Glenda established a solid alliance, defending themselves from desert nomads, screamers from the Forbidden Lands, Gillikins under the Witch Arella, and Winkies under the Witch Evora.  Caught between these frequent wars of conquest by the Winkies and Gillikins, King Jack of the Land of Harvest did his best to keep his lands free of Gillikins and Winkies.  This is the setting for Ozz, one of frequent, small wars between the four major nationalities and their assorted allies.

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign the Wars of Ozz Rules and over 70 packs of unique miniatures are now available from Old Glory Corp (USA) and Sally 4th (UK

Wars of Ozz is supported by an active Facebook Group.
Many new releases are planned for Wars of Ozz over the next few years including complete new factions and additional units for existing factions. Buck and the rules development team are already working on companion rulesets that use the streamlined, intuitive and reactive games mechanisms developed for ‘Ozz’and apply them to ‘traditional fantasy’ in Wars of Orcs and Dwarves and historical ‘horse and musket’ in Wars of Colum, Line and Square.
