Title: Mojo Paralysis
Post by: vodkafan on March 06, 2020, 11:26:37 AM
I was bowling along quite well then suddenly outside events have conspired to give me a major Mojo Paralysis.
Even when I have a good chunk of time I can't summon the will to move forward with anything.
 :(
I am sure Hammerhead will shake things up and get me going again.

Go with the flow, the return of Mojo is inevitable!

As you know, I had the same issue of late.  What you need is........

......an RPG!  lol

He's right, it it ani't working, don't force it (good advice in general I find), take a break / do something else, and one day you'll feel the urge!

......an RPG!

As in a role playing game? Or a rocket propelled grenade?

I've gone through something similar as of late and Harry is right..... the mojo DOES return. If only in spurts.

Yeah, I get the same problem periodically and I definitely find that it helps to have some sort of definite objective to work toward, be it a game or a show or a forum painting challenge.

The RPG referred to in this case is a Rocket Propelled Grenade.
See Flatpack's Spectre game for the full details.

Vodkafan.  Remember it is a hobby & not a task. As others have said,
'Don't force it'.   As I know you are already doing a bit of sorting through
outstanding boxes, keep on doing that. The MoJo will return, when it is ready.

The only time I came close to losing Mojo was in the seventies when we all fell for the fone directory rule sets to make us into 'proper' wargamers. I'd finish work Friday and set up for battle Saturday afternoon. By Sunday afternoon with conclusions drawn, I'd have a bigger stress headache than I ever got at work! Things had to change, so they did.
So, take a couple of nicely chilled beers and sit among yer toy sowjers just enjoying their company, have a cogitate on the deeds of glory you've enjoyed together...
and all will be well.

:)

This and the above is good advice as my mojo has been lacking of late despite now having a dedicated wargaming cave.

I definitely agree with Jemima.  I've been in a slump for well over a year but an upcoming convention game spurred me to reduce the lead pile a little by painting some figures to contribute to the pool.  I'm hoping that this will motivate me beyond Hotlead, which is in two weeks, and I can reduce the lead pile further as the year progresses.

I have taken a long break, only to get embroiled in railway modelling.
Still, a change is as good as a rest - although this particular change was even more expensive that wargame modelling :o ! If you can come up with a different direction of modelling which you can start describing as: "And now for something completely different..." it could be an entertaining diversion.

I've had similar problems.

So I grabbed some figures from a Kickstarter I had bought into, that were quite different from all the other stuff I had sitting half-done, (different period, scale, size of army... 15mm Vikings).

I selected a few of the figures i thought were nicest, put the Vikings series on Prime in the background, and did about 16 figures in a day, then the next day I selected another batch of about 10, (all different types), did them, and so on.

Yeah, I used the Waterloo Bicentennial as a spur to reduce my pile of over 2,000 unpainted AB Napoleonics.  By the time the game arrived I'd painted over 500 figures... And had a pile of 2,500 unpainted AB Napoleonics...  :D

Minis have a way to replicate themselves at conventions/big games.

Don't worry - it will come back. Do something else for a couple of months and then you will come back refreshed.

Don't do what you aren't enjoying. I go through ups and downs in terms of productivity at my miniatures workbench. Recently I've been feeling very motivated to crack on with my various projects, but I'll also go through some months where I don't really feel like getting much done at all. In these times I think it helps if I spend time working on one of my other hobbies rather than forcing myself to build or paint or whatever. Eventually I'll always feel like I'm ready to start getting miniatures done and chip away at the backlogs for my various projects.

They seem to breed... The pile is now over 3,500 strong...  :o

I tend to find inspiration in reading.  Finding any half-way decent book on the history of a campaign or period (or TV/film) restarts inspiration very quickly.
Although take care, this approach can lead to a lot of half-started projects. I’ve found.

I forgot the one thing that keeps the entire wargaimng industry going...

10. Stop.
20. Flick aimlessly through chosen media.
30. Develop unwarranted and unexplainable lust for random period/subject/theatre/figure.
40. Metamorphise into an Ooo Shiney! Butterfly.
50. Mojo returned.
60. Spend small fortune/time you will never get back, complete half of project.
70. Lose Mojo
80. Return to 10.

I was sick for several weeks...which stopped me from hobbying/painting, and now I'm stuck in the zone where I think to myself "I don't even know how to paint anymore...".

I have been in that zone before!  But luckily it's only a mental thing, your painting abilities are still there.
Thanks to everyone  for all your advice!
