Title: I've Become an Old Grognard
Post by: Inkpaduta on March 06, 2020, 06:37:19 PM
I confess that I have become an old grumpy wargamer.

Reading the latest S&S I had several observations about modern wargaming.

I huffed when I saw an article about a game using cards. I don't care for the inclusion of cards with rules.

I shook my head at an article talking about the points used in a game. To me this is too much like fantasy gaming.
Don't care for using points. Just tell me the size of units used.

Then I grumbled at how so many companies have turned to plastic. Heresy! Gaming should be done in metal.

Then I realized I am an old grognard. Now I have to find out when this happened? I used to be one of the cool kids.

Yep, that is 3/3. That is past the point of no return.

I fully applaud you attitude towards wargaming  8) With the possible exception of a few plastics.

Nope, cards are fine, unless they are the only mechanism. Though I played a game in 1978 using cards, so just goes to show you can use cards and still be old, and a grognard.

And points work if you only get to play pickup games. And you can't play strangers without them or an equivalent.

Now for plastic...  love them, I get way more variety.

Well, what do you know?  I am an Old Grognard!  And a fully fledged one it seems.  Hooray for me.

Plastic - in the form of resin - is fine for buildings.  Plastic animals not available from any other source are an acceptable compromise.

But figures need to be made out of metal!  Cards are for playing poker.  Points are for the tip of darts.

Well, plastic - such as Airfix or Hatt these days - are okay for the young crowd without the budget for metal.  But high thee to metal figures with your first 'real' paycheck Young GrassChopper.  And maybe, just maybe, Pensioner Pete.

All else is vile sacrilege and shall cast thee into condign purgatory for eternity.  :o

There is a difference between being a Grognard, and just complaining....

1) Cards are useful. The issues is when they are included just for being trendy or to copy other design... but idiotic game designs have plagued the hobby from... Von Verdois time when he ruined Reisswitz Kriegspiel...  lol (this is being an old grognard!)

2) points... well it is not that points are wrong per se... it is just that almost always they are implemented in wrong way... you can play games without points with no issues, even with strangers..   so in this case you are just stating a good truth.

3) I like plastic and people where playing with airfix plastic from Brigadier Young times...

You have two complaints and one stark truth... just average gamer... be happy!  lol

I am an Old Grognard too! But, I love and treasure my Airfix plastic warriors that have marched alongside me for fifty years. I also think every game I play that features playing cards are a laugh a minute!
Is laughing still permitted for an Old Grognard?

lol  ???  lol

You forgot the, “I don’t want to play a “bucket of dice game” trope.

Personally, I’m an old grognard too, but none of your points bother me. It’s a hobby. If you don’t like it, don’t do it.

I started with plastic (Airfix WWII)
Points have always been around in RPG games (they where called GP and set your starting equipment)

Cards - we used to meet at the bridge club

so it’s a return to youth for me...
