Title: Spice wars
Post by: ichwillauch on March 07, 2020, 02:02:43 PM
My newest project!

Spice wars, an armed conflict between Dutch trading companies and the Portugiese Empire starting in 1602 somewhere in and around the Indonesian archipelagos. Beside the European forces there were also Chinese traders, powerful Sultanats and Japanese mercenaries, so I can use not only half of my lead mountain but also have good excuses to buy even more.

It is also a chance to combine some fantastic rules and games from the past and the present like:
- Seven Cities of Gold C64
- the island of dread E1 D&D
- Ghost archipelago
- Pikeman's lament

Seven Cities of Gold
In this game you can buy only four things for your expedition; ships, men, food and goods to trade

So I need ships. Some years ago I offered a project for students to build pirate ships from plywood, cardboard and paper. Two of this old models were chosen for a rebuild to convert them into wooden ship models:

the first ship awaits a second painting, masts and rigging

the second ship is still under heavy construction

The Island of Dread E1 D&D
this was the first adventure for the expert set where you have to explore an unknown island and I liked it a lot! So I tried Gimp to create a map of a new island to explore

This project sounds like a lot of fun.  I'm going to be keeping an eye on this thread.

P.S> Great work on those ships!

Thanks for the nice comments! While the ships take their time I need a crew:

Raising the company (Pikeman's Lament)

The units selected for this 24 point company are:

Forlorn Hope @ 6 points (includes the officer, formerly known as Heritor) 6 models
Commanded Shot @ 2 points + 1 point for a hero (formerly known as Warden) 6 models
Pike @ 3 points raw unit 12 models
Pike @ 3 points raw unit 12 models
Shot @ 4 points 12 models
Regimental Gun @ 4 points 6 models
Missionars & Administration (formerly known as clubmen)

For campaign rules the company has 7 units because of that needs 7 points ship's hold and 7 food per turn. For Ghost Archipelago the 12 models of the Forlorn Hope and the Commanded Shot forms the crew for the skirmish game. The remaining five units can make repairs, grow food or build something

Great looking project. I'll be watching for some AARs to see how this plays.

Fantastic period and an interesting project.  Looking forward to see how this progresses.  You know that there were contemporaneous conflicts in Brazil between the Portuguese and Dutch to control the sugar and brazilwood trades.  Also interesting in that there were indigenous forces that could be allied with one or the other side.

Your boats are inspiring; I will have to revisit this thread as I have been thinking of making a chinese junk.

I always wanted to game this period in southeast Asian history.   I even started to get minis together for a game about 30 years ago. But then I moved to the Pacific. Oh well,  I will watch this with much anticipation.
