Hello again all,
Here is the wip of a Gruundar vehicle ( IronGolem ??? not sure on the name yet )
It is based on a free Ebbles paper model.
Card, plastic sprue, & milk container plastic caps for wheels.
They say the devil is in the detail , so I added lots of pieces of small card , plastic sprue , wire etc.
Thanks for your comments.

Looks good. Very utilitarian :)
-
Nice build! I need to build some vehicles similar to that for exploration.
-
That is great looking. Your scratchbuilds are always impressive!
-
Thanks you sirs.
Do so WM , not difficult to do & very satisfying.
Added more detail ...

Hey Z, is there anything you can’t build? Unbelievable. I’m so jealous.
-
Just awesome can't wait to see it painted!
-
Thanks you sirs for the kind words.
Wm .. hopefully soon ..... now we have more time on our hands ;)
Hey Dan , you give me too much credit my friend but one tries one's best :D :D :D
will post more stuff
Z
-
Yes, I think WE all are going to have more time on our hands. :o
-
Just awesome can't wait to see it painted!
This needs a coat of paint to bring it together
-
Man, the moment, someone leaves plasticard next to you, you start scratchbuilding! Nice result.
-
Great work. Lovely busy surfaces difficult to do well and worth the effort
Please paint it up and treat us all :)
-
Thanks for the kind words :) :) :)
That's a good one Divismal :D :D.... actually I use much more recycled card than plasticard .....
I'm a firm believer that we truly, truly.... truly need to recycle whatever, however, whenever we can ....
and I try my best to influence others..... ;D
Will do more stuff & paint .... soon
Stay safe
Z
-
I cant wait to see how you paint it. I build a similar looking vehicle but for 28mm and have yet to paint as, quite frankly, it intimidates me lol.
-
One of the reason I do mostly 15mm.... I have scratchbuilt 28mm vechiles also... ( will post pics ) 28mm can be daunting unless you have an airbrush.
You can do it , you just need to start..... just give it an undercoat & take it from there.
Z
-
Yeah that's as far as I have made it. Maybe now's a good time with all this extra hobby time.
-
Impressive. Looks a beast.

*Stamp of approval*
Glorious new build. How does she scale next to a mini? Looks a good bit bigger than most of your tanks, but smaller than the drop ships.
-
Thanks Cook,
It is a big one... here are pics

Beautiful work, Z. Your attention to detail is astounding!

Thanks for the praise Cook. :D :D :D

And now we go to the 2nd version.
I am going to present it bit by bit so that it is easy to follow, if one is inclined to do a similar buid.
Very straight forward build.

Are you just etching your fold lines with a ballpoint pen?
-
Mostly yes. A 0.5 or 0.3 one.
I personally like the rough edge , like those found on welded WW2 tanks.
I sometimes use a blade others a steel point.
Z
-
More pics added.
Btw.
Wheels are made of 2 milk carton caps + wine bottle cork spacer + 1" nail + 2 part epoxy glue.
They've just changed the caps on our milk cartons locally & I liked the shape immediately.

So I was looking at this double decker type vehicle & it didn't look quite right so I decide to cut it in half & ended up with 2 cabins.
more pics at link so that you can see the build bit by bit . still a wip.

Two for the price of one!!
Those both look great. The top picture strikes me like a land version of a houseboat. Like the railings would just have some little planters and lawn furniture on the decks.
The bottom picture looks more like a mobile command vehicle of some sort. An administrative office on wheels.
-
Thanks Cook.
I'll be using the 2nd one, as a matter of fact.
Houseboat? Now that's a good idea , might just build a riverboat.
Don't have water borne vehicles as yet. ;)
Z
-
Me either, though I do have a couple river/creek tiles created. In hindsight I probably should have built the rivers similarly to my roads so that they sit flush on the tile and not as a carved area of the cork. Still, I could get some canoe type boats in there.
Reminds me I need to build some bridges too.
-
It's a marvel to watch what you can create with some card, a knife and some other utensils.
Awesome stuff, Z!
-
I'll show you a couple of bridges I built, Cook .
Thanks Ockman , glad you like them... as you can see card is very versatile. Though I use hobby knives a lot , my fav tool for card is a large pair of scissors , as it allows cutting of card with little effort.
Z

I'll show you a couple of bridges I built, Cook .
Z
Sounds ominous.
... I'm in.
-
Ha Ha Ominious as in "Oh my God, what is he going to cook up next ? ??!!!! "
In the meantime you can look these up, they are mainly for a hive style game but can easily be modified , well just for about anything even a boat bridge ( a bridge which can be moved where it is needed not just land bound )

Man, that is a LOT of bridges. Did you cut all those slots out by hand? Do you have some super punch that will do that to foam board?! :o
-
Hey Cook ,
They're walkways which can be used a bridges ( as I said they were designed for a hive war type game )
They're made of card ,mostly 2 - 3mm thick. As far as I know I didn't use any foam board on them.
I used to work at an office that had a spiral binding machine , it was a vintage beast which could punch up to that thickness . If you can't get your hands on a one that can punch that thickness then simply punch thinner ones & glue them together.
And there are these converted ones, Faller Train bridge, Airfix Bridge & loads of bits & pieces, especially on the big one.

Since I need a sci-fi bridge, I will probably skip anything modern Earth looking. But your scratch built bridges look nice.
I think we have a binding machine here at work. I'll have to check that out and see what I can do with it. Even stealing some of the punches out of it might make for interesting greeblies!
2-3mm card is thick. I'd love to get my hands on something like that. I think most of my card is in the range of 1-1.5mm if memory serves. I just step up to PVC foam or foam core if I need something thicker, but that tends to drive up cost quite a bit.
-
Thanks Cook, as I said you can glue thinner card together to get thicker ones.
You would have to align the square holes properly. Then put it under a heavy weight so
that it dries flat with no warping.
On another note here is the undercoated vehicle in black and then a grey zenithal applied. Both spray can.

and finished.... and since I was asked how I will paint it here is the sequence.
Spray cans black undercoat, grey undercoat zenithal...
A wash of green brown ink
All edges / rivets lined with black blue ink
Dry brush with buff / ivory
Decals added ( GW Tau )
Rust added with nut brown & orange brown
Mud spatters & tyres made with watered down buff
Chipping added with sponge - black , white and brush light grey

Where do you store all these beauties?!
-
stunning indeed
-
Thanks for the praise.
I store them in every nook and cranny I can find whilst keeping the peace at home.
Recently I started to build small showcases from scrap wood but space is always a premium
and I fear that I'm drastically running out of it !!!.

Wonderful vehicles, friend!
-
Zrune you clearly have an immense imagination to piece this stuff together from... well stuff.
That vehicle is slick, would love to see something like it in resin!!

^^^^
This. Even if it was just the chassis. They would make for great conversion fodder!
-
Thanks for the praise. :D
I think it would be heavy & costly if done in resin... unless cast with a empty interior.
Now that's a thought ,the chassis is more doable, just the bare chassis & the wheels supplied by the user.
But then again it can be simply & cheaply be done with sprue.
Off course it would be so much easier with using 3d printers but I will have to learn how to 3d sculpt
and finally get a 3d printer.
Might just be able to do just that by year's end...
Live long & prosper my firends.

Thanks Skullhamma.
