The dust has settled and the seriously jacked builders of the Build Something Competition of 2020 have been pair in a first round. Who will win? You decide!
You have five days to browse through the build threads and cast a vote one the final builds, after which winners will be matched in a second round.
A great many thanks for those of you who have made it through the build phase. I am seriously impressed by the collective result this season and we are all in for some tough decisions in all the matches.
-
As have been said, the bar is high over all. If you find it hard to pick one, I suggest you go back and take a look at the build process. It may help you to tip the balance.
-
Excellent entries. Well done all 8)
-
Yes; I'm seriously impressed and a little intimidated by all of the stunning work I'm up against!
So much eye candy, originality and skill... 8) :-*

Excellent work all round!

Really impressive work all around- every pairing presented a tough descision.

Do we submit, or have the option to submit, different photos for the following rounds?

The bar is not low on this competition, is it?

That would be good. My photos seem smaller, doing something wrong ::)

I had to change file format on your image as it too large for uploading to the forum gallery. That should only have affected resolution, not size. I will check and amend, if it is not the case.

I have no problem with that as long as the build is not changed or added to (small retouched are fine).
I will inform all participants by message so I know everyone is aware of this.
-
Interesting,it’s within the size limit,ie 1000 megapixels for the pic,raw file(on the camera),the camera itself is full frame slr. I’ll have to look into this resizing issue,I’m using Windows 10.

Think I've worked it out. It's because I'm a twit ;D

A very talented twit, nevertheless!

Amazing work all round chaps. Many incredible creations there, and not a duff one amongst the lot. Kudos!

I was of mind (foregone due to time constraints) to do some more weathering in the form of powders etc. Should I wait with those until after the race is run, or is it OK do go ahead for round 2? I wouldn't want to do something that's outside of the rules...

As I said, small retouches are fine but it would not be quite cricket to repaint the whole thing. I cannot be more precise than that.
-
OK. Then to err on the safe side, I will not be doing any extra work on my entry until after the contest has been concluded, to avoid any discussion :)
-
This years results are truly amazing. Well done everyone, well worth the wait. :)
-
A truly impressive body of work well beyond what I could do. Very inspirational.

Second photo in :)

And a great sense of camaraderie to boot :)
-
I have decided not to do a second photo - I don't think I can give a better grasp of the build in the size without basically being "go look at the old photo and here are some new angles".
Also, I have enough problems getting a decent photo in the first place.

Its fine as it is.

I am going to submit a new collage today but the photos will be only slightly different.

Thank you, but I felt like getting a decent collage put together took me as long as the build!

I used Be Funky Collage Maker (link (https://www.befunky.com/features/collage-maker/)) which was pretty straightforward. I did have to download and resize in Windows Photos.

Cool. I'll remember that til next BSC. There are some really handy and easy to use free online tools which we could link to in the rules.

New picture/collage sent.
I managed to get quite a few new angles, so I'm happy with that :)

Camera set ups would be good too,if only for interest sake. I've been meaning to photograph my rusticated system,it's a bit laughable really :)

I think we should have a board for miniature photography. It's a quite integrated part of what we do here on LAF.
-
I have received replacement photographs from...
- Blackwolf
- ichwillauch
- Codsticker
- Daeothar
- Lord_Odo
...in preparation for Round 2. I will also try to shoot my build from some new angles, should I win my match.
Let me stress that there is absolutely no need to replace your photos, I have allowed it for those of you who were not completely satisfied with your first effort. I also hope it is a way to keep interest up during this 20 day voting phase of the BSC2020.

That would be very helpful.
I own a (rather old, but quite functional) digital camera with a good macro function my girlfriend at the time gifted me for the purpose of taking miniature pictures. I know I got some pretty good results back then, but when I dusted it off to take my entry pictures, I realized how much I had forgotten.
I could not get it to focus, there was not enough light, etc. So I ended up resorting to my phone camera, which instantly yielded better results. But I know that if I get the camera to behave as it should, it would deliver superior pictures.
So at least a how-to, covering camera en lighting settings would be incredibly useful!
But I could also see use in threads covering particularly good pictures, with a breakdown by the poster/owner of the camera used, its settings, the set-up, the lights, and the editing process (which programs, functions used, etc).
Maybe a particularly well presented picture could be nominated for a break-down thread (if the owner would be so inclined)? Because I think a lot could be learned from looking at how people better at this are going about the whole process... :)

I have shot all my progress photos and my final entry with my iPhone. You have less control but you get quick, clear pictures. I did all the editing (crop, size, sharpness, exposure, saturation etc.) in pixlr, a free online photo service. It is a bit late for this competition but I'd be happy to do a tutorial.
-
Sounds nice, but I am managing with my phone also; it delivers just fine with default settings.
But I would like to eventually really work that dedicated camera to get even better results. I mean; I grasp the basics of shutterspeeds, focuspoints, etc, but to have them laid out specifically for miniature photography, with examples, would be a great help.
And I'm guessing I'm not alone in that.
Besides, some nice tricks of the trade when it comes to presenting the subject matter could be very cool indeed. I got my inspiration for the 2nd round picture(s) from a short video on toy photography on the Tested channel...

That would be great! :) There are some members on here (I think of Breazer, Blasphemia Blackwood and Captain Blood for instance) who are really good at taking pictures. I think there's so much to learn from them, if they would be willing to teach some basics.
I think the board would fit right in [Other stuff] in between >Workbench and >General Wargames and Hobby Discussion

I am currently discussing something like that with the Admins and Moderators. Stay tuned.

Here is my set-up, sans the remote I use, don't laugh. :)

Who's laughing? If it works, it works. I seem to recall that you are colour blind? If that is so, do you get any help with the image editing. (Your shots are great, I am just curious).
-
Correct :) Colour blind, occasionally I ask my wife just to check the colours, the mood lol is all mine. More often than not,I ask her when I’m painting rather than doing scenery, and she’s biased ;) I know my shots are often too dark,I guess it’s what I like.
And thanks :)

The champions of BSC202o are pared in cages and have bared their calloused fist! Place you bets, good people of LAF, as a rain of flock, tufts and coffee stirrers comes flying.
You have five days from now to pick your favourites among eight builders remaining in Round 2.
-
Sent my round 3 last night, Oz time :)
Good luck everyone :)
-
I sent mine in as well... I think. :?

Yes, I have received replacements from the lot of you. :-) Got stuck helping my dear old mother setting up an online scrabble account last night, remotely... ::) I'll kick off round 3 tonight.

Gather about, good people of LAF, the final by one round of voting for the finalist the Build Something Contest and the coveted Potato Cup, of the year 2020 is about to commence, You think the corona virus is bad? Just you wait till you have to make a decision which of the last four builds you prefer.
You have five days from now to make a choice for which last two builds that will proceed to the final round. AS Have been said before, take a look at the build posts and consider the intricacies of the respective process, if you need some help to tip the balance.
-
Thanks Hammers, and such gorgeous work,I almost voted for Codsticker, outstanding!
-
Hey Hammers, now that the contest has rounded the final corner can I post pictures of the build process and the finished product on my blog or would you prefer I wait until the final round is done?
Also, do we need new pics for the final round?

Let me just complete my hissy fit for not winning my round and I'll get back to you. ;)
-
If I get time tonight I'll try to send new photos - is there a theme to the new ones? Like the last round was supposed to AAR style?
But I may spend too much time in the corner giggling about beating a Swede... ;) ;D
Honestly, though, I am still surprised at still being in contention considering the competition. This year was spectacular.
-
Two more builders have been thrown out of the cage and the final two, the indomitable Codsticker and the abominable Sinewgrab are left in a final bout to death (-ish). Who will in the end lift the revered Potato Cup in a gesture of triumph? You decide!
You have five days to vote from today.

Into the home stretch now, 24 hrs to go in round 4. I noticed declining number of votes in each round: well over 100 in the first, just over 100 in the second, the 90's for the third and now just 72 for the final. Is this normal? As the painting league and the BSC seem like a good community building exercises here on LAF is there any way to promote them to get the wider LAF membership involved?
-
I have a suspicion that some of that is caused by indecision - I know I have looked at a contest, and not voted, because I could not make up my mind.

That may well be the problem; theoretically the choices should be more difficult as the competition progresses.

I expected some BSC fatigue, which i tried to amend by allowing for new photos.
