Title: My Paraguyan Project
Post by: Pictors Studio on March 16, 2020, 06:50:00 AM
I just got a package in the mail today when I got home from Cold Wars.

It had four packs of Perry Paraguyans in it.  After a brief nap, I got cracking on them.

None of them are finished yet but I've put the wash on them now and will head to bed.  Hopefully I can get the first seven done in the morning.

They are great figures and I've been hoping for a long time that the Perrys would never do this as it means I'm going to have to buy a lot of them.  With Cold Wars over I'll be placing an order for some Brazilians soon and some more Paraguyans.  The goal is to put a game together for Historicon or possibly Fall In.

I've managed to clean them all and get them sprayed.  So with a little luck I'll have this first batch finished by Tuesday night.

Here we have the first seven of them finished, sans basing.  I got two packs of one of the line infantry and one of the others so I'm going to mix them up.  They are all going to be 3 to a base on 30x60mm bases I think.  I'll decide for sure when I get them stuck on them.

They are very nice figures and I'm looking forward to getting a game in with them.

14 of them finished now and onto the officers next.

When the officers are finished, and they are close already, I will probably do one of the command bases up with a trial for how I want the basing to work.  Then I can push on with the rest of them and hopefully by tomorrow night they are all finished.

I just ordered two units of Brazilians and another pack of Paraguyans.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments. I'm hoping I get the Brazilians in by the end of the week to get cracking on them. I've got two more terrain pieces to work on until that and I'm hoping I can get get at least one of them done tonight.

Thank you.

Here are the first 15 of the Brazilians done and on their bases.  I need to do another 9 and I'll have two units finished.  I have them sprayed but now need to get them on sticks to be painted.

They are very nice figures and the uniforms of these guys are almost identical to ACW guys in kepis and frock coats, so I might fill in some of the units with some plastics to keep the weight of the army down a bit.

Post by: Pictors Studio on April 01, 2020, 03:08:48 AM
I finished the first two Brazilian units, save for the flags which may have to wait until after quarantine.

I did one unit firing and one unit attacking.

They were really nice figures to paint.  I have another set of command for each and an extra 3 figures of each type so I'll have to order one more pack attacking and one more pack firing to get two more units.

For now I have the ACW figs that I should be able to proxy.  I need to get some greenstuff as mine seems to have gone off to convert their canteens.  It shouldn't be too hard to do, the worst part is going to be cutting the old ones off.

That is the next part of the project.  Once I have those ready and sprayed then I'll probably order the two packs mentioned above as well as enough stuff to make 4 more units of Paraguyans so I'll have six units for each side.

Hopefully all of that will keep me going until this whole virus thing is over.

I've also been working on some terrain for this.  I got some swampy ground at Cold Wars from Battlefield Terrain Concepts.

Here is most of it painted.  There is one big pond that is also finished somewhere around here.

I'll  probably wait on the Argentines for a bit in favour of doing more Brazilians. I want to get 8 units of each done to start with.

Right now I'm planning on using the Perry flags but I may try to paint some myself on lead foil the way I did with the paraguyan ones.

I don't know how to explain it, but I think what's really clear with your painting (and the sculpts) is the depressing nature of the conflict. This is not a bad thing, it makes every victory with your miniatures satisfactory.
Title: Re: My Paraguyan Project
Post by: Digits on April 18, 2020, 08:41:05 AM
Are Perry likely to release any cavalry or artillery soon do you know?

Also, just been reading up a little on the war, it seems gunboats played a part, a great modelling opportunity, are you tempted?
Title: Re: My Paraguyan Project
Post by: Pictors Studio on April 19, 2020, 05:21:12 PM
I have no idea.  Someone told me they had cavalry on the Facebook page.  With them, typically, most things for a new range come out pretty quickly, at least enough to get you playing the game. Cavalry was pretty important to the Paraguyans and so I'd imagine we will see some sooner than later.

The war was a pretty depressing affair.  I doubt even the victors could take much joy in the end result given the devastation that was wrought on the vanquished.  Rarely in military history has the latter title been more appropriate.

On a lighter note, sort of, here are some more Brazilians along with a new piece of terrain.

These are the last of the Brazilians that I will be able to do until the lockdown ends as Perry Miniatures are not sending out orders until they can again.

I'll get a picture of the whole lot of them later today probably, if it stays nice out.

As far as the gunboats go, when I was at Cold Wars I had a half-hearted look about to see if there was anything that could be useful and have looked at a couple of manufacturers.  I will probably eventually do the naval part of the conflict but will try to get the land part done first.

Depending on what figures Perry makes I might do the naval stuff in 28mm and scratch build some boats to do the cutting out actions.  I actually wrote a set of rules I like for that for Napoleonics and it wouldn't take much modification for this.

Well here is the whole crew so far:

This is showing units of 15 Paraguyans and 9 Brazilians.  That is only because I don't have more figures.  Eventually they will be units of 12 for both sides.

It looks like Perry Miniatures are closed for lockdown so unless I start converting some of the ACW figs I have I guess this is all I'm going to get painted until it is over.  I started this project when I got back from Cold Wars and was hoping to get a game together for Historicon but it looks like that might not happen depending on how quickly we end this thing.

I guess I should have ordered more when I had a chance.

I just got my first unit of cavalry finished.  I have some more infantry painted too but they aren't based yet.

I started with a set of the militia.

They are great figures, as you would expect.  The horses have a nice and varied amount of blankets on them with some having ropes used as reigns.

The riders themselves are mostly barefoot or wearing sandals.  The commander has long boots on.

The other neat thing is that some of the riders have bolas.  I'll have to include them in the rules somehow, perhaps have them be able to take one shot at other cavalry units when they are within 6" or something.  That way riding by cavalry could have some impact.

I'll start working on the next set today probably.  I'm on-call so we will see if work permits.

Thanks!  I appreciate the comments.  I was glad to get some cav finished as it seems like that is a step towards getting some forces on the table for a game.

I've finished up some more Brazilian infantry as well.  These round out the figs I had to make four full units of Brazilian infantry now.

Next up are some more Paraguyan infantry and I have four more horses painted for the cav.  I'm hoping I can get another unit of Paraguyan infantry finished today and then possibly get some of the cavalry started.

Here is the most recent Paraguayan unit that I've done.

I now have four units of infantry for each side and a unit of cavalry for the Paraguayans.  I have another six horses painted so far so I just need to get the riders done and I'll have another unit of cav for the Paraguayans.

I have a few days off coming up so hopefully I'll be able to finish them and get another unit of cavalry done as well.  If I get both of those done I'll only have one more unit to do before I have to buy more figures.  The next order will be the two units of Brazilian cavalry I need for the Battle.  Then it will be two more units of infantry for each side and then hopefully they will have some high command and artillery out
Title: Re: My Paraguyan Project
Post by: Pictors Studio on October 29, 2020, 12:08:55 AM
I got a couple more stands of Cavalry done this week.   More Paraguayans again.  These are the command sets for two more units of cavalry.  I'm hoping to have the other stand of one of these sets done later this week.

I have another three stands of cavalry to do after that one and then I'll have four units of Paraguayan cav.  That will finish off my Paraguayan cav for the time being.

Up after that will be the Brazilian cavalry and artillery.  I'll have two units of each.  Then I need to double the amount of infantry I have and wait for them to put out some high command figures and my first game will be playable.

It has been a while since I got any of my GPW figures finished, but here are the next ones.  More Brazilians, this time with cowboy hats.

I'll get another two packs of these to round them out to full 12 man  units eventually.  They are nice figures and I'll probably make some units with mixed head gear by and by.

I just primed the Uruguayan Libertad Battalion.  So they will be the next thing I do.  I'll probably get started on them when I get up in the morning.  They will be my first set of Uruguyans.

Title: Re: My Paraguayan Project
Post by: Pictors Studio on December 10, 2020, 10:08:41 AM
And here are the first of the Uruguayans.  These were some sharp figures.  Reminded me of painting my Carlist Forces, for obvious reasons.

I'll probably only have two units of Uruguyans at first.  I need to order the next set soon.  I've almost finished my Paraguayan cavalry and as soon as that is done I'll be out of figures to work on for this project.  I just got the last six riders sprayed and mounted on paint sticks so I'll have a whack at them after I get up later today.

I still need to do some flags for all of the allied forces.  I think I'm just going to buy a good printer to do them.  The Paraguayan flags were easy enough to hand paint but I don't think I want to do that for the allied flags when the Perry's have such nice ones on their site.

Anyway I hope I'll have a few more units of cavalry together for the next time I post, maybe by the end of the week. I'm off this weekend so I should be able to get through some stuff.

Title: Re: My Paraguyan Project
Post by: Pictors Studio on December 10, 2020, 05:43:56 PM
I haven't used anything yet.  I don't have enough stuff yet to do a proper battle.  I  plan to start out using Black Powder as that is what I use for most of my 19th and late 18th century gaming stuff and it works well for some of the smaller scale conflicts of the time that I do, like the First Carlist War and the Kosciuszko Uprising.

I have plans to do a game at one of the HMGS conventions, once they start up again, using Carnage and Glory.  This project would be a lot further along had the conventions not shut down as I was planning on getting a game done for the Fall In that would have just passed.

Thanks. I must admit Black Powder needs too many troops for me. This will be a definite "minority interest" project. I have found something on using Osprey's "Rebels and Patriots" , and plan to also look at Two Fat Lardies "Sharpe Practice 2".

Black Powder is definitely a big battles game, although people do use it for French and Indian War, so you may have a look at that supplement to see how you could do it with fewer figures.

I'm mostly interested in doing the bigger battles so it makes sense for me.

I guess it has been a while since I posted anything here.  I've been mostly doing a bunch of cavalry that doesn't look much different from what I've already done.  I have three more to do before they can get their group shot.

Meanwhile I got one of my two Brazilian guns finished.

I did them in the fatigue uniforms and I like those.  I think I'll do the other gun in the blue uniforms to give the overall army a piecemeal look.  I might even do one of the guys in the other gun team in the fatigue uniform to make it even more mismatched.

Nice figures as usual.  The guy loading is significantly bigger than the rest of the crew which is interesting.  He fits the gun perfectly, so when put on the base the round is going into the breach exactly.  I'm wondering if they intended to make one bigger than the others or if he got resculpted when the guns were finished to fit.  I like that he is a different size.  If all the figures were slight different sizes that would make for a very realistic looking army.

Nice work!

I wonder if the Perrys will decide to make some child soldiers for the Paraguayans, anyone who has read about this terrible war knows that after heavy defeats, the Paraguayans were fielding an awful lot of boys, some as young as 10, 11. The accounts by Brazilian and Argentinian officers talked about this. They obviously would not be the same size as adult soldiers.

But a good argument for different size figures.

Nice updates - I recently got a large order from the Perrys for a similar project (including that gun). Like you I'll mix up the uniforms and hope for different sized figures (with a lot being noticeably mixed/African in appearance).

Its been a while since I finished anything for this.  I finally got some of my Brazilian cavalry finished and next up is a Brazilian gun.  With one more unit of these guys and the second gun done I'll have everything I need for my first game except high command and casualties.

I also need to do the flags for all of the Allied units still.  I haven't done any of them.  I should print some out soon and get them finished.  I suppose I won't be using any of this until at least September so that still gives me plenty of time to round things out.

Very nice project so far. South America is quite an interesting theatre, WotTA and WotP are both ones that have my interest as something to dabble in in future. I recently picked up a copy of It's Getting a Bit Chile which I'll likely run a test game with at some point before jumping into a project.

Keep up the good work  :D

Thanks guys!

I have another thing done, the second, and final for now, Brazilian gun.

This one is firing and I did the guys in the dark blue uniform, mostly because I was trying out a new way to do really dark blue with GWs contrast paints.

Anyway I'm pleased with how it came out.  I have three more horses to paint and then I'll be out of stuff I have primed right now.  I'll have to get back to cleaning and spraying some more figures tonight.

I finally managed to get a game in.  We did the opening of the Battle of Estero Bellaco at Historicon/Fall In last night.

We managed to play through it twice with the Paraguayans winning both games.

I still need to do a few more units before I have complete forces to do the whole battle.  I have to order some more figures from the Perrys and now that the command figures are out it is a good time to do that.  I'm hoping that I can do a bigger version of the game at Cold Wars.  I'm actually hoping that we have Cold Wars at this point too.

I'll probably also run it at the winter Bushy Run Games day.

In the first game the Paraguayan cavalry did the lion's share of the work, pretty much smashing all opposition down without getting smashed themselves with some fantastic rolling for saves.

The Uruguayan infantry did not last long against the onset of the Paraguayans in either game, getting ridden over by cavalry in the first game, but then done in by infantry in the second when the infantry charged past the cavalry in their enthusiasm to get to grips with the enemy.

There weren't too many figures on either side so the games lasted about an hour each.  Still I think everyone had fun which is the point.

The redoubts are a little large for the artillery pieces.  In my reading of the battle the guns should not have had any kind of defensive works at all probably.  I wanted to give them a little something in game terms to reflect them having more troops than I had for the game.  It added a little scenery to an otherwise featureless battlefield.  I won't be using them the next time I run the game.

Carnage was pretty heavy on both sides in both games, which was a nice reflection on how the actual battle went with massive casualties on both side.  It was pretty touch and go who was going to break first in the earlier game.  In the second game the Paraguayans had things in hand more but they still suffered incredible losses, they just managed to spread them out over their units in a more (game terms) tactical way.

The marshy ground did a pretty good job of breaking things up from a maneuver perspective and really gave the left flank Paraguayans something to think about on their trek across the battlefield.

We used Black Powder for the rules.  It worked pretty well.  I gave everyone pretty standard stats.  The Paraguayan cavalry had an extra attack over the Brazilian cavalry and had a special rules for their bolas which never proved effective and wasn't even used in the first game.

To reflect the Paraguayans attacking and being a little bit more enthusiastic in this phase of the battle I gave their commanders a leadership of 9 and the allies a leadership of 8.
