A first outing for my American platoon in this campaign for Chain of Command set in Normandy shortly after D-Day. The 175th infantry regiment from the 29th Division is attempting to push inland and link up with the landings from Utah. There's an initial post on the blog about the extra pieces I've put together for this campaign, including the Marder I posted earlier. You can see all that here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2020/03/getting-ready-for-29-lets-go.html
Here's a few of them. First up I wanted to create some flames for a man pack flamethrower. Always a great way to illustrate the action in the AARs.

An AFV is a harder target if it moved flat out in the previous phase, something can be easily forgotten when calculating the hit result and so I wanted to find a way to mark that on the table and thought these dust clouds would work well.

In a similar way I wanted to find a way to mark various things that could happen to those AFVs in a way that would blend in more with the table and so came up with various markers using bits from the spare box:

I needed to add some extra M4 Shermans to the mix and a second Marder to make sure I had all I needed for the campaign. I got creative with the second Marder and made up some foliage camouflage.

We've also started the campaign and played the first scenario Probe at La Cambe. The first blooding of my American platoon (even if I hope to do the blooding, as in this campaign I'm actually playing the Germans). A full AAR here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2020/03/29-lets-go-scenario-1-probe-at-la-cambe.html

oohh excellent, off to read it now. Thanks.

With the easing of restrictions here in Australia it's been great to get back to some face to face gaming and more importantly get our 29, Let's Go! campaign for Chain of Command back up and running. The Americans cut through the Germans like a knife through butter in the last game, so can my Germans put up a stiffer fight this time around? Thanks. It's these campaigns where CoC really shines. I find it's a rule and campaign system that delivers a really enjoyable (and plausible) narrative.

Enjoyed the reports of the first two battles, as I knew I would. Your campaigns are legendary!
-
Some more great looking games. Looking forward to reading your AARs when I have a bit more time.

The US 175th Infantry Regiment have to clear a village on their flank and the site of ‘mobile 88mm guns'. So far the Germans have been unsuccessful in stalling the US advance, will they be any more successful here? Cracking update . 👍👍

We now reach scenario 4 and after three defeats the Germans are in dire need of a victory to have any hope of stalling the American advance. Luck certainly hasn't been on their side, but could it change this time? The full AAR is here:

Just read your report on your blog, excellent game!
I am just starting out in CoC in 28mm for early war.

Yes I agree great looking game :-* :-* :-* :-*

In my view, the Tactical Painter game reports are only just behind getting to play a game yourself. I think a part of that is that both players seem to be both good players. I learn something from every game, because the narration takes me into the decision process.
-
Just read #4, great stuff! That was one the Americans won't forget in a hurry.
-
Jolly good work! The idea with the broken track link is top notch and very clever indeed!

After German success in the last game they have the opportunity to mount a counterattack. While there’s little chance they have the force to push the Americans back, what they can do is disrupt their drive forward. Cool little game report :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Nice little action. You didn't mention what it did to the morale for both sides, was it unchanged from the beginning?

We forgot to do it at the end of the game, so we will do it prior to the next game. US don’t track the opinions of men or CO, other than the confidence of Col Goode, who will become very cautious with any setbacks. As this was technically a US victory that won’t be a negative for the Col.
Germans have lost contact with their CO, so his opinion is unchanged. So we only need to roll for the men’s opinion. Casualties were very light and less than the Americans so there shouldn’t be too much change there.

Having beat off the German counterattack the Americans now return to clear their right flank near Cardonville. They were mauled badly by the Germans at the first attempt, could they do a better job at the second attempt? Wow that was grim! The happy days of Blitzkrieg are well and truly over for the Germans...
-
Great looking and interesting game :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Gripping stuff! Im really enjoying your AAR's and the plentiful photographs are an all round win and an inspiration.
I sympathise with your lack of luck with the dice, but I too thought your original deployment was sound - the American firepower is a thing to behold.
What a shame High Command couldn't have scraped up some Panzer Grenadiers from somewhere...
-
Those big US squads are very resilient, and throw a respectable amount of firepower, especially when they are remembering to re-roll ones!
Watching this, I'm thinking that the Sicilian campaign I was contemplating could be very one-sided for the Italian forces.
On the other hand, your dice rolling at the end there seems to have let you down badly, even assuming you weren't facing an opponent with a seemingly uncanny ability to roll double phases.
It just confirms I really don't like the mortar barrage rules though.
Thanks again for the trouble to put together the AAR that we can all enjoy as vicarious gaming! Great looking figures and terrain. It's the next best thing to being there.
-
awesome looking game! Love the markers...especially the flamethrower one.
-
So we reach the final map with the campaign in the balance. Can the Germans stall the Americans for one more game and snatch a campaign victory or will the American steamroller prove unstoppable? I'll take it from your username you might have been tempted with a shot of vodka? Glad you enjoyed it. It was a tense game and it wasn't clear which way it was going to go until right at the end.

Yes, it did come very close at one stage. I thought Dave kept a very cool head.

One thing you are fortunate in is a good opponent. You seem pretty well matched in skills. That cannot be underestimated.

That is very true. Not only do our skills match but so does our temperament, play flows smoothly and we resolve any differences pretty quickly and amicably.
We like our history and our historical wargames. Dave’s very interested in finding out what actually happened, rather than accepting at face value widely held views of events, so he’s into the gritty detail. I’m particularly interested in how anyone manages to make anything happen on a battlefield given the chaotic, frightening and violent nature of the place.
The Lardies appeal to play the period, not the rules resonates with us. While we can argue all day about how well they actually achieve that in their rules, we are finding that it ticks a few boxes for us.

Thanks for these reports TP, I have really enjoyed reading them.
