Title: Rural shrine complex - Week three, 18th April 2020
Post by: OSHIROmodels on March 29, 2020, 05:38:51 PM
Right, I’m starting on a 30mins a day challenge created by a chap on a Japanese gaming Facebook group. The idea is to spend around 30mins a day on a project and carry it on for as long as possible. I tried it last year but only lasted a week or two  lol

It’s terrain this time but when it’s finished I’ll hopefully move onto figures.

It’s a simple, rural shrine complex based very loosely on one near Nara (Yakushi-ji is the main temple).

The buildings are available in the catalogue and I’ll also be adding some additions on a separate base to the front. The reason for the separate base is because I’m trying to break the habit of making stuff willy nilly without a thought to boxing it. This base will fit in a Really Useful Box and the extra base in front should fit into the compound area.

Hey mate, I want to see pictures of my Shinsengumi! :o

There's a piccy in the LPL here  :) Haven't had a chance to do any decent set ups with them yet though and want to finish a few more off soon.

Luckily you have almost unlimited access to such great buildings!  lol

Thanks chaps  :)

Here’s today’s 30mins. Not much really lol

Decided on a small base to the front to include a torii, offering and hand wash area. It should fit inside the compound.

Also did some stairs up the mound (that will need cutting and filling in) and put a bit of filler around the mound. This’ll be sanded smooth tomorrow.

Thanks :)

Day three already  :o

I cheated a bit and painted these late last night but it still only took half an hour or so.

They'll be dotted around the complex (possibly stuck) when it's just about done.

Thanks  :)

Completely forgot yesterday so I did an hour or so today. Not much really to show as all it was was cleaning and prepping buildings for painting and then  ‘planting ‘ the steps.

Here’s a bad picture of the steps  lol

There will be more to show when the buildings get some paint on them  :)

Day six and the wood is just about done. It might need a bit of touching up once the panels are painted but we’ll wait and see.

I don’t think I can spread the panels over several sessions so I think I’ll do them in one go in a few days  :)

Day seven down and it’s just a quick painting session on the odou base. It might get a bit more when the groundwork is done.

Very nicely done timber work. Did you use sprays?

Just for the base coat, everything else was drybrushing and inks.

Love the grey brown finish on the wood.  So much more realistic than brown.

You do know you’re going to have to issue a cease and desist letter sooner or later?

Cheers  :)

Just the wall panels on the odou today (six layers for each  ::)).

Will do the shoji and the mound steps tomorrow.

Haven’t forgotten the 30minute challenge but I’m working on the building panels and photos of varying shades of brown/tan on the same buildings would get a bit boring lol

Proper update over the weekend  :)

So, about 30 minutes a day (give or take) this week and the wall panels are done along with a base coat for the roofs. There's six layers for the panels, I'm thinking I could've gotten away with three or four  lol

Door details and roof ink tomorrow.

Roofs and door details are done. Probably shoji next but there’s lots so I’m not too keen  lol

Week three down (I think I prefer weeks for terrain) and the main groundwork is done along with the shoji and a couple of touching up bits.

The mound was like icing a cake  lol

There will be sand in the courtyard and I’ll start on the ‘entrance’ base this coming week.

Looking good and I understand your reference to cake icing. My cork based terrain typically requires some spackling and this can be challenging to both cover and to get the correct texture without extensive sanding. The amount of dilution of the spackle is key to this.
