Hi All,
So conventional wisdom has it that the best way to protect your models is to spray them with a base layer of gloss varnish followed by a coat or two of matte to dull it down, but does anyone have any experience with just spraying matte varnish on? Specifically, how does The Army Painter's matte varnish spray hold up when it comes to protecting them?
If I can cut out an unnecessary step I will do. I don't know if anyone ever has this problem as well, but sometimes when I do coats of matte over gloss the recesses stay slightly glossy.

AFAIK the Army Painter is just the same as Dullcoate or Krylon Matte spray in that is does not offer any protection. It is meant to be used after you apply the Army Painter shades. Those have a gloss agent in then that offers protection.
You would need to use some sort of actual varnish product to protect your figs

For years I have only applied one coat of varnish and that has been a spirit bases Matt brush on varnish. Others may help with your specific case involving sprays.
Two coats of varnish, of any sort, will be better than one but that's not the same as being necessary.
