I have been thinking of producing a Wars of the Roses Lancastrian army ever since the Perry's brought out their wonderful plastic figures and I found the Perfect Captain's wargames rules. I had a few stashed figures and occasionally put paint to a few of them but the project never really got off the ground.
However that all changed when my regular wargames opponent was taken up with the bug. So I got out the paintbrush and decided to get stuck in. After painting a few more I realised that I could not paint heraldry for toffee so I had a few figures comissioned by Dez. He produces the most wonderful heraldry, which you will see.
So after about 5 years of gestation, here is my first Lancastrian contingent. Apologies for the poor photos.

And here in a better setting.

And a close up showing Dez's work on Thomas Courtney, 5th Earl of Devon. Flags by Pete's Flags and all figures by Perry, a mix of plastics and metals.

The are based for the Perfect Captain's rules with 3 figures to a 40mm by 40mm base, each base depicting a typical weapon mix. I have decided that each retinue for a minor noble will be 4 stands each with 2 men at arms bases and two archer bases. Peers and important nobles will have a double retinue.
I have about 8-12 retinues planned with a whole load of Commsion of Array troops, whilst my partner is collecting Yorkist forces.

They look pretty good to me! :-*
Sounds like you have a lot of painting to do... ;)
OTOH, it is always nice to have a mate to paint the opposing force so you both can the lads on the table quite quickly and start bashing each other. Wat! :)

Thanks very much for the kind comments but I have to stress that the Heraldry on the leader is painted by Dez. The rest are mine.
Next up is Robert, Lord Hungerford. Perry's plastics with flags by Freezywater.

Nice!

That's some really impressive heraldry on the officers of these contingents!

Rapid work!
I'd say you should be able to get them into battle in no time.
Keep up the good work!

The heraldry on the leader figures is not my work but painted by Dez who has posted on the medieval page a year or so ago.
A couple of weeks ago as we entered lockdown, I was gifted a couple of sets of sprues by Ulverston, from the Agincourt and mercenary ranges, and decided to do a little kitbashing using the spear and axe arms to produce some Array contingents, especially Welsh Spearmen. I wanted them to look a little different from the bill and bow armed troops. Here's my attempt.

Next up will be some more riding retinue.

Looking really good. Like the kit bash.

Beautiful work

Nice work! I like the touch of using the older style arms to give them a real militia feel!
Also, I really like the wildflowers on the bases, they look great!

They look great! I have been meaning to do the same thing.

After a brief hiatus, whilst I turned my attention to other projects, I have recently painted up a few mor WotR figures.
Here are some of Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke's retinue.

And the whole contingent.

These along with his father Owen Tudor and some of the earlier Welsh Spearmen will form part of the army for the Battle of Mortimers Cross.

and that heraldry is painted? Amazing work. Great looking units - be good to see them in a game situation.

As I've said before in the thread, the heraldry on the magnate figures is the work of Dez ( a member on this forum) who is a very talented painter. I just put the rank and file together.
Hopefully I will get a game or two in when the lockdown lifts and I'll post some pictures of the whole Army. It's just a few units from being completed.
-
And they look great. What color is that Green? And what company make it?
-
They do look rather splendid :)
I love the coat of arms. It's always worth spending some time getting them right 8)

Its two tones of foundry colours Forest Green 26a and Bright Green 25A.

Thanks and I agree with you regarding the cot of arms. It and the flags and standards makes the units pop.

Cheers! :D

Nice painting, I especially like the Tudors. I did them when we did the WotR as club project. :D

Here are some mounted troops which I intend to expand on later for a mounted contingent for the battle of Blore Heath.

Splendid Gary. They look great.
You have mastered the noble art of the stripey lance!

I'm not sure they were used except for perhaps jousting but they look great. I think I got the idea from your WotR Cavalry thread. :D :D
Actually the striping was relatively simply. All I did was paint the base colour, then add a very slim piece of masking tape in a spiral and painted the second colour. Remove the masking tape once the second colour is dry and voila!!

gorgeous....well done sir

gorgeous....well done sir
Thanks Giles.
I have been painting up a couple of minor nobles who will form the Well Wishers - local knights and minor lords who supported the main protaganists when called upon.
The first is Sir John Grey of Groby. His claim to fame was that he fell at the Second Battle of St Albans, leaving behind a widow, Elizabeth nee Woodville, who later married Edward IV. Perry figures both plastic and metal, heraldry on John Grey by Dez and flags by Freezywater.

The second is a bit of poetic licence - Sir William Bourne - my namesake. He is of course a fictitious character, with his heraldic banner based on a later coat of arms. Perry metal and plastics, flag shopped up on powerpoint.

I have a number of these planned including John Beaumont, Thomas Grey, Ralph Greystoke, John Scudamore, Edmund Grey, Lionel Welles, Ranulph Dacre and Lord Roos.

Wonderful as always, and great freehand.

Thanks guys but I must stress the detailed heraldry on Sir John Grey is not my work but painted by Dez.

I would gladly take you up on that espcially since I now have more time on my hands since retiring.

Thank you both.
I realised that as the forces had started to take shape, I didn't have any real WotR terrain to fight over other than some very generic hedges etc, so with a little inspiration from other threads -notably Charlie and Painterman - I have started to produce some. These are two of the Hudson and Allen foam buildings built into a little farmhouse with barn.

I have a few more on the workbench, which will follow in due course.

Jolly Nice - those Hudson and Allen buildings are great little models and you've tide them together perfectly

Gorgeous! Well done!
-
Beautifully executed and very evocative :-*
May I ask, what did you use as a base please? Tt looks quite thin, which is a good thing and I have been searching for something thin that would not warp for a while now ???

Thanks for the kind thoughts chaps.
Darren, the base is simply 3mm MDF. I don't find that it warps at all and I use it on all my terrain peices. It takes paint and PVA well and I can carve the edges so that it doesn't sit proud of the table or leave if square if I expect two pieces to but up against each other.
-
Awesome work! I'm glad mine inspired you, yours look much better I think! Perhaps its the addition of the pigs that does it?
I really want to order some more of these buildings myself sometime. Do you have many more of them in the queue?

Thanks. 8) I had heard in WSS that some people were using book board, the sort of stuff they use to bind hardback books.
I'd rather go with mdf as it has to be stronger.

Thanks for the kind words and the inspiration. I doubt that mine is better than yours, it must simply be the pigs. :D :D
I have three more prepared. The next one is going to be a tithe barn and then another small farm complex. However I am waiting for some more scatter terrain such as sacks, cornsheafs etc for the tithe barn so it might be that the second farmhouse gets to be finished first.
I do want to order some more but I had heard of a LAF member who was going to be an UK stockist but I am waiting for him to reply to my pm.

Yes I had read the same article. I thought of trying some but honestly when you know something works, why tempt fate and use something that is unproven. I'd hate to have to try and remove the building from its base - difficult without damaging it.

Yes I remember hearing that a few years back, but nothing ever came of it that I'm aware of. I'm probably going to hold off buying and making any more terrain before a much-anticipated house move happens (hopefully someday soon).

I'm 100% with you on that.
Why take the risk, or rather, tempt fate?

I do like the H&A buildings. Those have turned out beautifully Gary. It’s a shame they’re so hard to get hold of this side of the Atlantic, without getting clobbered for customs and import duties. They’re also a little on the diminutive side compared with many modern ‘large 28mm’ figures, although seem a good match with the Perry ranges.

I can see how the size would be a problem in a skirmish game, of which you certainly excel Richard. I think it's the opposite problem we have for larger battles, where you want high quality buildings with a smaller "footprint".

Thanks and I agree with you about the size but I think they work perfectly as stand alone pieces within a large battle scene, as Darren says above.

Agreed about the footprint.
As for availability I wonder if Vatican Enterprises would consider a UK stockist. Perhaps I might be tempted to approach them and see what they say.

I finished off a small tithe barn. Building is again from Hudson and Allen and I decided to be a little more adventurous in my colour scheme.

Seconded :)

Beautiful Gary. The pink works a treat. Ox-blood in the render no doubt. I believe that’s what accounted for the distinctive pink in some medieval buildings. Although I could be wrong lol
(I bet our mutual friend, Harvey, would know... ;))

Perfect!

Thanks for all the positive comments.

I didn't know about the ox-blood pigmentation but nice to know that my colour scheme has some basis of historical accuracy. lol lol
Perfect!
Thank you.
I have one more pair of buildings on the painting table, which hopefully will be completed tomorrow and then I'll turn my attention to some scatter terrain - carts, haystacks etc.
Then I must take some action shots of all the units together.

The final pair of buildings are a cottage and stone barn with a small garden.

Beautiful buildings. I like the 'adventurous' color on the earlier post :)

Such an excellent job on those terrain pieces mate :-* :-* :-*
Highly impressive to see so much work go into them 8)

Another perfect combo! The way you have paired the buildings together and based them is spot on, they must all look good together on the tabletop.

Thanks Charlie. I'll post a shot of them all together along with the army so far in a couple of days. I have one more peice that I am putting together, not a building per se but very much a terrain piece.

"The coldness of the King" is one of the morale factors in the WotR rules that I use. Any faction that faces the sole king either in the army or commanding a ward will suffer one morale loss at the beginning of the game.
I wanted a small vignette to physically show this during our games. If either side controls King Henry VI the the vignette is placed behind the army and the opposing side suffers one morale loss.

This is a Magister Militum tent, decked out in Henry VI colours with his standard flying (curtesy of Freezywater Flags). The figures are Perry metals.
