Title: A Couple of Plastic Cottages
Post by: Codsticker on April 06, 2020, 12:08:56 AM
With the Build Something Contest having closed I relaxed for a week before turning my hand to a couple of plastic kits I had sitting around: the Perry's Medieval Cottage and the Tabletop Workshop Cottage.

Very nicely done! I particularly like the colours on the second one.

Great work. I keep meaning to get one of those Perry cottages.

Thank you guys.
lovely job :-* :-* :-* :-*
can you explain how you paint the dubbing?
On both buildings I primed with Armourcoat grey spray primer. On the TW cottage, I dry brushed a very light grey and then a very light dry brush of white just here and there. After I used the standard washes but would also mix them up so that on each panel I might use a bit of strong tone and then in the same panel maybe some flesh wash. Then again with a bit of dry brushing here and there if the tone had too much of a "mudding" effect.

The Perry's cottage was slightly different. I actually used Ceramacoat craft paints  :o. A base coat of Territorial Beige (I think...) then I dabbed it inconsistently with  Pebble using a sponge. Not a big difference in colour but creates subtle variation. This followed by a dry brush of Desert Sand. From there afterwards it is the same process as the TW cottage. You can't really tell but I tired to delineate between the wood and the daub with dark wash but it is not really noticeable. It wasn't necessary on the TW cottage as the wood stands proud from the daub.

Very nice - I particularly like the square framed one, might be a useful addition for my own project  :-*

Thank you SI. :)

I knocked off two more Tabletop Workshop buildings over he last month: the Town House and the Merchant's House.

I managed a couple of photos of the interior to show the detail.

As usual, more pixpls and twaddle on my blog (https://codstickershistoricals.blogspot.com/2020/05/more-tabletop-workshop-buildings.html).

Excellent - I can see I need to be braver with white in my wood tones - yours look spot on.

I never realised the Tabletop Workshop models had interiors! Like that wooden floor.

Those look great!

Is Tabletop Workshop out of business? A quick rummage around the web shows their website(s) all appear defunct and their FB presence last updated sometime in 2015?

I've got one of Rendara plastic hovels on my painting bench right now, picked up for the heck of it via Brigade Games. Nice little building, fast to assemble, and it'll make a fine little addition to my table.

Thank you guys.

Flinty: I find the weathered wood really hard to get right: it's either too dark or too light. The model was primed dark grey (I would go lighter next time) and then I added streaks in ScaleColour Grey Brown and a few lighter streaks in GW's Administratum Grey and even fewer streaks in Coat D'Arms Roan, a very light dry brush of Administratum grey followed by Army Painter Strong Tone wash. I try to support all the paint companies...  ::)

Wire LIzard: TW are now sold through Warlord Games (link (https://store.warlordgames.com/search?type=product&q=Tabletop*+Workshop*)).  Not sure if they own the moulds or bought the company outright but they seem to have them in stock or at the very least the ability to turn them out: "While we hold as much stock as possible, on occasion this product may need to be cast...".
Is it the Medieval Cottage you have? Great daub texture and the thatch roof is excellent.

I particularly like the 'natural' colours.

Looks like you got Tango'ed over at TMP http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=529376 (http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=529376)

Agree with the others, great painting.

Cool. Interesting that a Google search doesn't show up a link to the Warlord site, at least not that I saw.

I've got the Renedra Wattle & Daub Outbuilding: https://www.renedra.co.uk/product.php?product=276

Neat little building, some nice wattle details I probably wouldn't have created myself if I was scratchbuilding something like this. The roof is pretty good. I've got mine based and mostly painted; need to finish the thatch roof and get some photos up on the blog.

Not just me, then! (I got my account there suspended by Billy the Weirdo after I criticized his weird fundraising email and habit of picking public fights with former advertisers....)  lol

While waiting for my new toys to arrive I dug into my plastic stash and put together another Renedra Ramshackle Barn.
I added a thatch roof, my first attempt using fake fur. I also stole Silent Invader's inspiration (check out his brilliant thread here (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=116169.0) if you haven't already done so) and made my own pinfold using the wattle fence that came with the Perry Miniatures cottage.

Looking great, both the barn and the pinfold. That might be the best looking thatch I've seen recently, too, with the moss and grime.

Regarding your comment on mailbox-watching for a Warlord order (on your blog post), trans-Atlantic small package shipping is utterly FUBAR'd these days, I assume because so few passenger flights are crossing the Atlantic. I made orders to Brigade and Bad Squiddo on the same day a while ago and both took 5-6 weeks to get to me where I'd normally expect 6-10 calendar days transit time. It's not quite as bad as old school surface mail, but nearly so...

That has turned out really well.
One of the better Renedra offerings methinks, greatly assisted by your scenic additions and the thatching.

Yeah... I have a number of orders "in the post". One from Fenris that I made late January... :(

I have an order from February from California to Illinois.  Still lost in transit after leaving CA.  The world shipping might be in a tizzy but after years of effort the sabotage of the US post service is nearly complete.

A delivery from Warlord brought me the Tabletop Workshop and the Medieval Chapel. The chapel will wait but I got pics up of the stable and the barn which I have had done for a few years now up on my blog (https://codstickershistoricals.blogspot.com/2020/06/tabletop-workshops-barn-and-stable.html).

Very impressive! I always thought those sets looked too 'plastic', but you've certainly made them look fantastic. The foliage on the bases really helps.

I don't think that is a completely unfair criticism; a better roof would certainly mitigate that .

Quality additions to the collection!
 :-* :-*

That Renedra barn has been on my 'wants list' for far too long as it is so versatile.
Makes me wonder why I have not got one yet now that I see yours.
You also have me looking at a few other options that I did not know about now, so...thank you!
 :)

Thank you LAF'ers. :D

Mason: with the right roof that barn could be used in wide variety of settings- quite versatile.
