Folks,
I’m kicking off a series of posts on my classical warfare in ancient Greece project - Hoplites…and lots of ‘em! There will be a series of posts on the topic as I work my way up to big battles forces along with mass skirmish games set during and around the time of the Great Peloponnesian War.
Please pop in, make comment if you like and enjoy.
Cheers

They look good! So does the scenery.
-
Great blog and an impressively ambitious project....you’re off to a great start ! Shall be following your progress with interest
-
Great work! Following your blog now.
-
I like what you are planning.
Your battle on your web site was great to read.
Look forward to seeing how you progress with this.
-
Thanks chaps, :D
..stay tuned if you are a lover of Ancient Greece..plenty to drool over to come. ;) ;)
Cheers

You know I will be following it closely!

Enjoyed reading your blog so far. Inspired by your enthusiasm as I am currently refurbishing and rebasing my Athenian hoplites.
I am more drawn to the Greco-Persian Wars as Athens and the Delian League was more the heroic underdog. The Peloponnesian War is more of a naval war in my head.

I missed this thread..
I have to agree that reading the blog post was very very interesting... love the research and thinking going into the project !!

Thanks guys,
Been away a bit and getting some painting done...next post to follow.
Some more figures finished off and now working out and finalising the optimal basing...though pretty settled on the final result here are a few of my 'experiment shots' to have a look at.
...more to follow in my next post.

That's an interesting shield pattern that it displays when it doesn't show the picture. Is that Hellenic? lol
-
Gents,
The next post on my ancient greek hoplite series takes a look at my speed method for getting figures painted. Focusing in on the ‘big picture’ we see how they are coming along and my method for rapidly produced hoplites.
Lots of pics.
Cheers

Well done Old Boy ..!!
These look very nice and probably better in the hand ..?
Cheers
-
Massive project and the masses are looking good
-
I agree. Army Painter washes are great for Hoplites. I was painting 30+ at a time as well using a similar method.
However, the underspraying the Spartans red was genius!
-
Masses of hoplites do look good!
-
Gents,
Another post…this time on the expanding Spartan force. I see red is what you will see…the Spartans will continue to expand as the lightly clad/naked hoplitai aka sailors and/or ekdromoi (phalanx skirmish hoplites) are on the paint table to follow...plus more of these men of the Peloponnese.
Probably look at basing next and then time to thrust this crew into action…

Great project!
Have you checked out the luckbringer novels by Nick Brown? Fantastic inspi for the hoplite era
-
HI Nick,
No I haven't checked out the Luckbringer novels - thanks for the tip.
Here's a bit more inspiration for ya... ;)
-
Gents,
On to basing and getting the first big block units done for the big battle.
…Some nice pics and discussion about how I base figures for large numbers of figures.
Hope it is of some use...

They look stunning! I really like the flock mix you've made, it looks really natural.

Fab :-*

Looking good!
-
So cool!
-
Excellent result and a helpful tutorial. :-* :-*
-
:-* great result
-
Thanks guys,
Plenty more to come down the line. These units should look really good once they’re all organised and en masse.
As you can see, and are no doubt aware, hoplites really do look impressive when arrayed in dense formations.
Stay tuned for more!
Cheers
-
Impressive indeed - and a great blog too! :-*
Will surely stay tuned!
-
Very nice. Love the photo with the backdrop.
-
Small pic of some a selection of the Foundry civilians just finished. Have been experimenting with some color combinations and Army Painter dip mix 'n match.
The World of the Greeks range really is a cracking good line of figures. These will be part of some Men of Bronze skirmish game action...

Don't know if it's just me, but I can see where the photo should be but it's just an empty square?

Same here

...weird...when I look at the page it's visible.
I've copied the link address again. Hope that works.
-
I've had another go...something odd with Google photos. Hope that works. Here are a couple more pics of some lovely Gorgon Spartan slingers. I think the blue is a bit bright...shall tone it down on the next lot.

Men of Bronze battle report
(https://agrabbagofgames.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/image0a.png)
In this clash our Peloponnesian friends are out trying to chop down the sacred olive groves and generally upset the Athenians …alot of pics to see for this upscaled game of Men of Bronze that looked great and played well.
Enjoy...

Fantastic battle report, great painted minis and excellent terrain. What more do you need. :-* :-*

Wonderful :-*
Very nice red on the Spartan's tunics

Sweet Christmas! That was amazing!

Thanks chaps for comments above...
Some more men added to the ranks. Quite a bit of eye candy in this post. Hope you like em.

Splendid! :-*
Gotta love hoplite phalanxes 4 ranks deep.
The miniatures are excellent and I really love how you put that extra little bit into your shields.
-
Some more men added to the ranks. Quite a bit of eye candy in this post. Hope you like em
They look even better in real life too - an amazing project mate!
-
Terrific work on all these. A beautiful collection.
-
Brilliant stuff, love it. I'm very tempted to get my toy Hoplites out for a parade after looking at yours.
If nothing else it'll make them new Persians too frightened to creep out of their boxes!
:-*
-
Gents,
It’s been a little while but things have been getting done. If you like hoplites then you should like this post…nearly 800 hoplites ready to hit the table.
I hope you find some eye candy worthy of a look.

:o :o
Amazing, good sir!
-
:o Is there a pick my teeth up from the floor emoji ?...because if there is I’ll put about ten of them in a row ;).....what a sight to behold - mightily impressive
-
Good work!
-
Wow...incredible staying power for an awesome end result...hope you are not intending to play DBA with this lot😉
-
Thanks Chaps,
They do look good all ranked up but better on table.
@DBA...actually, they can be used for DBA! Two bases side by side gives a perfectly usable ‘single base’ so you could have twelve ‘elements’ on table, each being 8” wide with 32 figures on it! Maybe that would be a DBA world record :o :o ;D
One of the main design goals of this ‘universal’ base method was to get maximum use across all game systems using the same figures...so the armies can be used from command and colors ancients / DBA through to Hoplomachia...all using the same basing system.
-
Looking awesome mate, can’t wait to see them all out on the table!
-
Taht's a LOT of hoplites... :o
-
Bravo! That is an army!
-
Fantastic work. That is some real dedication to crank out that many hoplites, and they look smashing.
I've become a bit daunted in my own hoplite project and it has languished for a while now.
-
Thanks for the comments chaps...much appreciated.
As promised, here are some 'on table' shots of the hoplites arrayed for battle. In some cases ...in battle!
I've been focusing on getting minis completed so no big hoplite battle reports as yet but they will follow.
There are some nice big hoplite units in action here.
Enjoy

Splendid :)

Fantastic work! :-*
-
Gotta admit, I love when people share pictures of "4x8" units... makes me feel like I'm doing something "right" when I take forever painting 32 figures per unit lol
-
What a marvellous sight that is....top work sir
-
Awesome work. They look amazing all ranked up.
-
Thanks chaps,
The project is panning out very well. I've got to add Thebans to this lot but they will take a bit of time. Also I need a few more light troops etc. so still more to go but the big look for the really big hoplite feel is working nicely and is lovely to push around...
Here are a few more shots for your viewing pleasure o_o o_o
