Title: 28mm sci fi sculpts - Big mutant sculpted, cast and painted!
Post by: Mammoth miniatures on April 08, 2020, 06:53:39 PM
I was able to sculpt this chap up yesterday, based on a piece of art from my rule system Planet 28.
He's exactly 30mm from top to bottom - I envision him as a power armored mercenary/breacher.
It may be a little while before he sees silicone, But he and others should be in production in the near future.

I like him. Probably not what you intend but with a bit of conversion and a weapon swap I see a wonderful Labyrinth Goblin in there!

I couldn't resist casting up a personal copy of the sculpt for myself so i bused out the hotmelt rubber and got to work - A very rough cast that needed alot of fixing BUt i got a paintable mini out of it to show off. Gave him a quick and simple paintjob over breakfast this morning.
So here is breacher mercenary "ned" in his K3ll-I armour.

I spent a couple of hours sculpting this little chap today - He's very obviously inspired by the latest piece of artwork put out by the warhammer community team, showing off some new alien species.

I figured he'd make a cool mini and a fun little challenge, So i set to it. Overall he took about 2 and a half hours, which is pretty damn fast for me. (the joys of alien anatomy, you can cut alot of corners.)

I think he came out quite well and he might see a mould soon.

That's pretty cool! There's a real shortage of interesting, non-humanoid aliens out there. I feel you've done a good job of sculpting to the art without being a direct copy.

That looks super-cool.  Quick work on that too.

The fourth sculpt in the range - A gun-slinging one eyed mutant. who needs depth perception when you've got a brace of pistols?!

Really happy with his this chap turned out - He's built over a 1:1:1 skeleton of sculpey/fimo/beesputty which made an excellent hard base to add greenstuff onto. that may be my go to method from now on.

I'm aiming to kickstart a run of 5 sculpts around july.

I also finished this chap a little while ago - he's a bit moebius, A sort of travelling psychic.
I'm probably going to resculpt his face.

I put the first 4 sculpts into RTV moulds and got some casts knocked up yesterday - they need some chasing but these are the metal masters that will go towards making a production mould.

I'm gonna head back to the studio over the next couple of days and knock out a few more to get some painted test models ready, And finish the fifth sculpt of what will hopefully be a 5 sculpt mini range.

Title: Re: 28mm sci fi sculpts - I painted something!
Post by: Mammoth miniatures on February 18, 2021, 02:46:43 PM
That's right, I painted one of my own casts!
I actually cast dozens of this chap and then melted them back down since I wasn't happy with the quality I was getting. In retrospect I may have been too hasty because now 6 months later he's painted and i think he looks quite good. but i have a terminal fear of selling a product I wouldn't be happy with so it's back into the moulding chamber for the master.

in the mean time here's frank the one eyed mutant gunslinger, fresh from the paint table and ready to blow holes in whatever he can see.

I got a couple of things sculpted over the weekend - A new scribe to add to my sci fi civilians and a big heavy one eyed mutant with a massive gun.
I got the moulds made up the next morning, did some casting that afternoon and got the mutant painted in the evening.
He's my favourite of my own minis so far.
I've put him into my existing mutant warband of converted GW minis.

More cool figures, and a very nice paint job on the mutant.  Once they're on your webstore, I can forsee me succumbing to temptation.

Cast up some new sculpts for the website - a scribe, merchant, and space explorer.
Pretty chuffed with them, I think they could form a good little warband all on their own :)
