As I am stuck at home like so many others I decided to rehabilitate some small cottages that I built about 12 to 13 years ago. I built these houses for Colonial/Pulp games but they really do not meet my standards these days. They were initially built from foamcore, cardstock, and balsa with the roofs made from some non-slip shelf liner.

A few years ago I.....acquired some woven plastic place mats that I was sure would be useful. My wife is still miffed that they somehow appeared in her handbag after a somewhat boozy brunch.

I cut the matting and inserted panels into the cottages to give a lot of extra texture. I also put some more layers on the roof to again give some more texture.

Finally, I based the cottages and repainted them and glued some flocking on the bases.

I am much happier with them and expect them to appear in situations across the Pacific and southeast Asia.

Looking really good. :)

Good upgrade...they look much better.

Wow, those placemats look amazing.

Thanks fellas!

The place mat panels look really good, I did a similar thing but used an open weave hessian and unfortunately thats exactly what it looks like. Your matting is much more random.
Very good find.

Thanks John.
I completed the last and largest of the cabins and built a pig pen. Here is how my village looks now, much better.

She still checks her handbag afterward Mike, especially when we are with my friend Glenn! lol lol It was not a one time event. The "mats" in the village picture are from a different textured placemat from the same restaurant.

I do hope you leave a generous tip to help 'pay' for the modeling material! lol

Excellent idea Lon, I've only ever bothered with glasses and ash trays ;)
I'd better send you some tenants :D
