Title: Venta de Pantalones- The Anglo-Portuguese
Post by: vodkafan on April 22, 2020, 12:06:20 AM
At the urging of Digits, I am starting a thread to document my progress on my Peninsular War project. This is my "big" wargaming project, which I have wanted to do for a long time, so now I have finally kicked it off!
I am planning to represent Wellington's Light Division. Originally I was just going to do the 2nd Brigade, but I have been collecting figures second hand for a couple of years, and when I started to arrange them into battalions I found I had enough to do the 1st Brigade as well.
Here is the historical line up and which manufacturers I will use:

1st Brigade:
1/43rd Light Infantry (Perry)
1/95th Rifles (Front Rank)
3/95th Rifles (HQ and 5 coys, Warlord)
3rd Cazadores (Perry)

2nd Brigade
1/52nd Light Infantry (Front Rank)
2/95th Rifles (Perry)
1/17th Portuguese Line (Front Rank)
2/17th Portuguese Line (Boot Hill converted)
1st Cazadores (mix of Front Rank and Boot Hill)

Divisional Troops
Ross' Troop RHA  (mix of Front Rank and Perry crews, Front Rank cannon)
14th Light Dragoons (Perry)
16th Light Dragoons (Front Rank)

Having written all that, the first unit I am painting is none of those at all! I am painting a "spare" battalion of Britannia Miniatures British Line as a practice, to get over my fear of painting Naps.
Here is the first pic of them in progress:
I hope to get them finished and based by the end of this week, and will explain more with pics as I go.
Thanks for reading!

So you already have all the infantry figures??

Well met fella.  Looking forward to seeing the finished line unit.  You going to shove it in your reserve presumably?

Anyway...crack on, I’m looking forward to our game.....in a year or two! Lol

Well done James. Whenever I sit down to list things for a project...
hours have wizzed by & I have found lots of other interesting things.
When painting always remember the 'Three foot rule' i.e. look at the
figures from 3' away. If they pass that test, move on to the next unit.
Nice flag & reasonable basing distracts from a multitude of errors.

A mighty fine start to your project, you have the planning nailed, I only wish i was as well organised!! :)

Thanks chaps!
Jambo, It has only recently come together. I have to admit to doing no real planning at all. I was in a "collecting phase" for a long while just buying job lots of second hand figures. It was only at the back end of last year when Digits said he was doing French that the vague plans got distilled down quite quickly.

Meet Neville. He and I have learned a lot about painting Naps. I made a few mistakes along the way, but we got through it together. He is not quite finished, he needs the metal parts doing. He is waiting patiently for his 39 comrades.

If Nev's crap, I wish I could paint as bad, I'd be proud to have him march into one of my Battalions.

Well said.  For your first Nap, he’s great!  Further more, when he’s stood with his mates, he’s going to look even better.     Get the others looking like him and that will be a fine regiment.

Welcome and good luck on your Napoleonic journey. Neville is a very promising start!

As I said to Digits... when Neville is standing there with his 39 compatriots... you won't see him anymore. You'll just see a British Battalion of Foot!  ;D

Thanks chaps bit more progress. the Grenadier Coy and the Light Coy skirmishers (split between two bases.)
The bulkiness of the Britannia castings causes a slight basing problem, the Line should be on 30 x 40 bases but they simply won't fit so for this unit I have gone 35mm x 45mm

Well spotted Harry! Actually these are not in truth part of the Peninsular project per se, I bought them long ago but needed something to get my confidence up in painting that I would not feel "precious" over.

You can still slot Nev and his mates in though, some of Wellington's lads received the Belgic shako, before war's end.

Yes the grey trousers were also pretty universal by back end of 1812. I am not going to be too stringent about uniform, although I can get sometimes get anally fixated on other things that others don't care about!

Always remember, a painted figure is a Thousand Times Better than an unpainted figure.  And - as I'm repeating ad nauseum of late - once the game is on, its what the unit can do that matters far more than the paint job.

The size of those units would drive me bonkers!  Rather like my FIW has been driving me bonkers for ages (42 or so figures plus four matching casualties).  There will come an end.  And then the flood gates of other periods will open.  (I keep telling myself that!)

They look like they are shifting a pace to me!  Nicely animated figures.

Know what you mean though....real life and work now getting in my way too so a slow down is inevitable.  However, persevere matey, won’t be long and you will have two magnificent regiments.....cracking.

What’s the little cart?  I like that.

Late in joining my Anglo ally, but then manjana (I'll check the spelling tomorrow)
is a Spanish word.
My first unit to take the field. Militia from Eagle miniatures.
They had been (hiding ?) in my lead mountain. I bought them
'back in the day' when Partizan was still at Kelham hall, before
even the 'big marquee' year!
I have received more from Eagle, though they will be line troops,
& will be in White (see other recent comments on how to paint
white uniforms) & I have yet to decide how to paint them.

By raiding my 'Embuscada' (Peninsular skirmish) stock, &
adding four more Scots, I now have a second unit to fight
Senor Digit's troops.

Vodkafan, to paraphrase...  someone in history,
'They may well be Sabot bases, but they is our sabot bases.'

Thanks for the nice comments.
Digits, the Sabot bases are 70mm x 48mm. If necessary I might be able to
make some movement 'trays' that would be closer to the other units, i.e.
40mm x 40mm per four figures.

In the meantime, also raided from Embushcada (Skirmish game) some Guerrillas.
Another 24 figure unit. Mainly Front Rank.

Fantastic!  Love the character in these.  Going to need a few gendarmes to deal with these rebel scum....hand on, I’m mixing in my Star Wars here.....

See....you’re not nearly so behind as you’d claimed!

We need a James to pick up the pace now! Lol

Making alternate bases for the Scots would be best mate if you can.
Title: Re: Venta de Pantalones- The Anglo-Portuguese
Post by: has.been on May 26, 2020, 02:52:29 PM
Is the frontage the most important thing?
i.e. 20mm per figure? So that a 24 fig. unit, in line, = 240mm frontage?
Also, how big, or more accurately how small, can units be?

Edit: I have started your force org and paint progress log based on info You have both given so far. Where you have given me unit designations I have used those, should you wish to update or assign names, let me know.  I know it will need a few tweaks yet....

I have thrown in another brigade based on a few units I will aim to paint up which you can use to even things up a bit.

Nb I simply use figure counts based on the unit sizes I gave you.  If you have painted a few more, these are not reflected in the overall count.

Also, you have me the background material for some of your characters, I will let you type that up yourself.

I have been busy painting...   Two figures!
I hate trying to match previous paint jobs, even my own, but
I have 10 Cacadores painted by (one of the) Andy Taylor.
It seems that if you are named Andy Taylor the ability to paint
well comes with the name. He did these over 25 years ago. It
should therefore come as no surprise that it has taken nearly
a week to come close to his style.

But now another anti-French unit, even though it is at half strength
(12 figures) They are skirmishers.

For those who are interested, my two are in the last picture.

I will not be matching Andy Taylor's style.

The Harper figure came to me from Garry, so I don't know the maker.
There must be at least 4 different manufacturers in the unit.
Connoisseur, WarLord & Front Rank for sure.
You are right it is time I did a Spanish line unit for my Spanish force.

As Digits has kindly added to the British (see his Highlanders) I feel
it is only fitting that we offer to assist the French recruitment,
though only an under strength skirmish unit, Voltegeurs De Regiment
De Irelandais.

But those Frenchies are Irish!

One of my (planned) Spanish units will be in Sky Blue, not white.
They too will be Irish. Good scrap if those two units meet.

More Irish?  I didn’t know they fought in a Spanish service too!

The grass seems much more green on the allied side of the battlefield...my Frenchies are obviously pushing a scorched earth policy!

Thanks Warboss. Back at school, which has put a break on my production.

building up courage for painting those all white Spanish uniforms.

For all white uniforms give white primer and contrast paint white a try (plus dry brushing). I was sceptical myself, but was quite pleased with the result on storm troopers for Star Wars.

Having followed all the advice, that came in response to Digit's request,
I was thinking of trying that method Warboss. Sounds like an easier option
to some of the others, and I hope will look OK en masse.

Some new recruits!
Some old figures, earmarked for Embushcada (Peninsular War Skirmish),
with a few new ones from Eagle Miniatures.
OK they are under strength units, but they are units.

In green are the Cazadores, 1st De Aragon.
In brown we have the Batallion Voluntarios de honor de la Universidad de Toledo (Bloody students)

So…the Frenchies are on the march and threatening to attack in the Spring.

So…the Frenchies are on the march and threatening to attack in the Spring.

The few intervening months should be sufficient to build up your defences and bolster your head count.

...and blow up a LOT of bridges?
I do have a cunning plan, it involves:-
A Royal Navy figure that looks like Cary Grant,
A Spanish bandit leader who is the spitting image of Frank Sinatra,
A camp follower who resembles Sophia Lorrain &
a bloody big cannon (54mm ?) :D :D :D

How about one 'mahousive' gun demonstrating the
laws of Physics, i.e. coming downhill at speed? lol? lol?

So we are playing on the side of a mountain and I’m climbing it in attack column then?

Might be worthwhile putting up what Mach’s Mecha is adding to the party?

Do I need to find a Francophile to help me out?

To much shorten my proposed answer, 'NO!'.

If a miracle happens & we outnumber you...
I'll let you borrow my Swiss unit. :D

Jamie will borrow one of my brigades.   I won’t ask him to paint any…..maybe the odd panzer II!

Swiss units are very good troops in Black Powder….

Garry likes the Ferengie in Star Trek.
They have "Rules of Acquisition", such as,
'Treat all friends as if they were family...
& exploit them to the hilt'

Digits, are you sure you have no Ferengie
blood in you? :D

Happily painting my own Frenchies.  Now, let’s see some Spanish horse flesh!

Ooo!  Big leap forward here!  Good recovery work on the Hinchcliffes.

Will have to update your force org chart soon….

oh my goodness, those hinchliffe...

same as the first miniatures I had - a presentation box my dad got me at Hamleys back in the 70s. That's how I remember it anyway!

somehow doubt it's the self-same ones however  :D

nice job bringing them 'round again.

A WIP chart update to help coordinate he allied response.

I’m trying to capture the current plans of both James and Peter and consolidate the progress.  I have some detail from James who is making headway with his painting but any changes guys, send me a note, cheers!

If the count is right, my French will have a tough time of it!
