Just for fun
-
Interesting. Might as well go the whole hog, do the MAZ-543 TEL and go Scud busting.
How about some more modest Russian transport for the Ho Chi Minh trail or a nice AACO for the Empress Australians?
-
I've been driving one around in Spintires - I just wanted one lol
It might not even get printed.
SCUD launcher doesn't have much in common - suspension... maybe chassis?
-
Fair enough. How big would the print be with the flat bed trailer? I’m guessing about a foot’s worth of resin.
-
Too big for the printer that's for sure!
-
Cool.
What are you going to tow with it?
How about some more modest Russian transport for the Ho Chi Minh trail or a nice AACO for the Empress Australians?
Or for Cold War Europe.
-
I've clearly not explained my process for choosing a project:
See something cool
Think that would be a neat build
But....
...I don't need one
...I have no use for one
...They are no use to anyone
I'll leave it then...
(Niggly voice - why not, it would be fun)
*Months/years pass*
Why have I started this (MAZ-537/Reichstag/Pak44/LCT/MGB302/MBV2 Railcruiser/180mm Railway gun/6mm Finnish army/Sno-cat/Kingforce/etc)
Note - useful is not usually amongst the general criteria...
-
Might make the MAZ-535 artillery tractor - that is a bit more 'self contained'

I think your thought processes aren’t too dissimilar to those of most of us, truth be told.
Currently swearing a lot at pres. I just went to put your Ontos together and made the same mistake again. Dry fitted, marked the sides to fit the suspension, glued and fitted one, all good so far, then when I went to fit the other, the fucking ZAP glue cured too quickly and I misaligned the two sets of suspension. Saw, craft knife, hot water and acetone have all failed to shift it. Broke a bit of track (fixable) for my pains. Off to buy some CA debonder tomorrow. >:( Hopefully that will do the job.
Mental note: Despite it’s superior bonding qualities ZAP has its limitations and a slower curing gel type CA is a better option. The fact that I fucked up in the same way just recently, amply demonstrates what a twat I can be.
Not blaming you but positive alignment points on your future models would be a help and I do wish the suspension was metal.* The fragility of resin isn’t worth any potential gain in detail or cost.
*I recognise that the choice of materials is down to others.
Rant over. Apart from that its a nice model. Hopefully I can salvage mine.
-
Yes, the tracks now all have a much better locating system.
Ontos was an early one.
-
I used epoxy as I had too many experiences of messing up the track alignment (see post passim).
Of course the extra time allows them to slip out of alignment when you think they have set....
-
And back on topic ;D
Landrover for scale... :o
-
You know that cab assembly looks just about big enough to insert a small electric motor and gearbox. Come on, you know you want to. ;)
-
You know I've got a 1/56 Sherman crab with working flail right? There is loads of room in that cab...
-
In that case a remote, if not radio, controlled model should be a doddle. Now we want a video of the flail in operation. Does it rotate fast enough and with sufficient force to detonate cap gun ammo? I’m assuming they still make cap guns of course. Embed a strip of those in yer terrain and that would be a show stopper at a display. lol
-
You've got me pondering all sorts now...
The flail tips have almost no momentum so won't trigger anything sadly. I'll see about a vid...

Sherman Crab

-
Ok, now that is fucking cool! :o
As a bonus it probably would make a great lint remover.
Oh and don’t think we haven’t noticed the Landie. You really should think about adding a AACO if you doing Aussie vehicles.

What Landy? ???
This ACCO?

Funny story. I was in the back of one of those when it had a mishap coming back from the range. The driver had omitted his first parade responsibilities and the brakes failed upon coming, fairly gently, to a halt at a set of traffic lights.
The truck rolled into a car in front of us containing a number of rather pumped up young males in their early twenties, which, in turn, rolled into the car in front of it containing a pregnant woman. Nice little three vehicle pile up. The GT striped hoon car in front had it’s boot nicely restructured but there were no injuries to anyone involved.
The young toughs in the car in front all piled out examined the damage to their pride and joy and started ranting at the driver, who was white as a sheet and the youngish officer in the cab. Then they started getting a bit menacing.
At this point one of our Warrant Officers appeared and firmly advised that they get back in their vehicle. Big bloke, slightly scary bloke but for a moment they seemed inclined to disregard the faint menace in his tone and go the biff on the driver and the subby. Then one of them spotted that there were about a dozen, fully tooled up blokes in greens and webbing getting out of the back of the AACO behind them. That was the clincher. Sheepish looks exchanged between them, anger rapidly evaporated and back into the car in the twinkling of an eye. Pissed myself laughing, never seen a climb down so quick and undignified. :)
-
Yup that AACO.
-
lol
Reminds me of a detachment to Aalborg in Denmark.
We had 'retired to the pub' after a hard week of keeping 6 jets flying in the snow without a hangar....no fun. (This is the RAF we don't do cold and wet - but the accommodation was top notch obviously)
A scrawny 'wiking' local was walking past nudging people to make them spill their drinks safe in the knowledge that his absolutely massive 'wiking' mate thought it was funny too...obviously a practiced double act... until he nudged one of ours...
The chap he nudged had a short fuse anyway and he was also now well 'lubricated' with Hoegaarten and he squared up to Mr scrawny... Mr big stepped in and squared up too...obviously their plan... but then, in one motion, almost the whole bar stood up... he hadn't banked on 30 of us ;D
At which point an absolute unit of a local wiking picked up a wiking in each hand and without a word heaved them into the street. He was a mate of the bar's owner and he knew who was paying his rent that week lol
-
We may be easily distracted, but there was definitely a Land Rover.
-
;)
-
Short wheel base Series II or IIA if I’m not mistaken. Hoping there will be a long wheel base version as well.
-
What Landrover ???
-
Good one of the ACCO
-
What Landrover ???
The sports car. That should keep Helen happy. They dismounted the RCL in Vietnam and mounted M60s on it for base defence.
-
Interesting the wings are different to the civilian version.
-
Yeah sporty go fast types. lol
-
I'll start a new thread later...
-
Interesting the wings are different to the civilian version.
Are they they specific to the sports car? Go faster styling?
-
Yup. It makes them look a bit like the Belgian Minerva but they were all conversions from Series II or IIa SWBs. Why they modified the front fenders is anyone’s guess.
More info and lotsa piccies here:

Here’s one repurposed for convoy escort and base defence:
-
Thanks. Needs its own thread.

Filthy tankograd porn turned up yesterday :-*

Plain wrapper and a knowing wink from the postman?
-
lol always
Now with winch cabin. The main thing I wanted from this book was the transmission area, it's exposed so needs to be at least approximately correct.
-
You are going to plonk your T-55 on the back of that aren’t you? Make it 1/48 and I reckon you could tap into the serious modelling market now that Tamiya have released their T-55. Might be a quid in it.
-
lol - maybe... going to be a problem to print I think as it's so big...
-
Transmission.
Probably a waste of time... mostly it's out of sight but the transfer case and gearbox are on show at least.
-
What a magnificent beast... :-*
-
The perils of drawings... in this case the transfer case was far too forward and low. Had to rejig the whole transmission to make it sit correctly. Had to get it right as it sticks out!
-
That’s an impressive level of detail Rich!
-
Thanks. Just hope u can work out how to print it....
-
Might make the MAZ-535 artillery tractor - that is a bit more 'self contained'
Love this vehicle. I have some painted up for a home built version of Thunder Road in 6mm. There is something so appealing about the brutalism and size of some Soviet designs. The Tu-28 is another example. Lovely work. Can’t think what I would use one for in this scale except a post apocalyptic wreck. Zone Alfa maybe...See, I can justify one already!
-
lol how about a 537 with a 535 on the back?
-
Just wow!
-
lol this doesn't need a caption
-
Tis a thing of beauty. Well, ugly, utilitarian, brutalist, beauty but lovely none the less. It’s a bit like the old Birmingham Central Library on wheels and fucking big wheels at that. lol
-
Thought I had a scale problem the wheels are 1600mm so at 1:50 that makes them 32mm... which they are give or take half a mm. But obviously 28mm figures are around 32mm high...
The solution is a 2-3mm thick base on the infantry making them 35mm high and to file flats on the wheels making them 30mm tall, which will correct it nicely :)
-
Wheels, suspension and the winch cabin. Chassis is printing and even angled it only just fits in the printer
-
Started on the trailer.... 270mm long! Seeing as my printers max dimension is 150mm this is going to be 'interesting'
-
The chassis is so long the printer can't lift it out the resin...
-
Bosh
-
Trailer basics
Apols for the crap FB picture but fusion has just crashed and I'm going to bed!

Landing gear next then ramps then extra fiddly bits...
-
You know that cab assembly looks just about big enough to insert a small electric motor and gearbox. Come on, you know you want to. ;)
Its probably big enough to put Richards son inside to drive it. lol
-
The wife insists on feeding him so he keeps growing...
Hit it with undercoat so I can see what needs fettling. The doors need reprinting and the roof and winch need a quick swipe
-
Another angle
-
And another's
-
That really does look good. ;)
-
Jumpin Jeebus! That does look good! :-*
-
Nice.
-
Verra nice!
Now if you could have a look at the 543 and 7916 in 15mm? :D
-
Trailer nearly done
-
Amazing how you do so detailed miniatures!

Amazing how you do so detailed miniatures!
Thanks! It does get a bit obsessive when I'm counting tyre grips, rivets and so on. The trailer tyres have 26 tread blocks FYI.
-
That’s why they talk about full spectrum warfare isn’t it?
-
The trailer is fecking massive. It's going to take 4 full prints. The load bed alone fills the printer. It's going to take 12 hours! The rear chassis and.gooseneck will take 4 hours each then the wheels and suspension another 2 or 3...
I can't quite recall why I'm doing this... o_o
-
Don’t worry, you’re not alone in asking that question. Yesterday, as I left an art supply shop, I asked myself the same question. I had just purchased an expensive bunch of artists oil paints because, on a whim I had decided it was time I learnt how to do colour modulation and weathering techniques using oils. More expensive I’ll wager than using the out of the bottle stuff from Mig, AK or other hobby suppliers.
Of course, if you want a break and now that you have got yourself into the exotic miniature international arms supply business, you could always run off some SIG SG 510 rifles for me. :D
-
My thought was to use it as a standard backdrop for my commissions.... probably lol
Chassis still has 3 hours to go.
-
Er... Yep it's HUGE!
-
1:48 King Tiger for scale! 17" long...!
Wheels printing now :)
-
Awesome.
-
Landing gear up and down
-
More
-
Moar!
-
Magnetized.
Just need to work out the ramps but might just glue them up
-
Stunning :-* :-* :-*
-
Excellent.
-
Top work! :-*
-
Hit it with a hairy stick
-
Wow!
-
Right, you just need to fill that trailer with about half a dozen Ladas. Call it The Siberian Job.
-
lol
Might have a look see if I can find a model of a Lada now...
-
I picked up a 1/50 diecast Trabby in Berlin last year. Almost but not quite. Disney Pixar do a generic 1/55 Lada/Skoda/ Crapovik in their Cars range.
-
That really is fantastically insane. :-*
-
Plan is for light weathering, dust mostly, with wear on the trailer paint on the contact points.
-
Brilliant stuff.. now, how would you use it in a game? Transporting the latest super-secret Soviet tank model that has to be stolen?
-
Parked as terrain ;)
It could be part of a convoy I guess... Not much call for them in combat!
-
It's amazing how a couple of simple decals make the difference
Waiting for a pot of grime to weather the tyres a little.
-
That is very nice.
-
Apols for the awful lighting
KV2 for scale!
-
Massive.
-
Mad, in the best possible way :D
I love it, not sure it'd see a lot of use, but it's brilliant :o
-
I dunno, there are folk on here that have built Zeppelins to play skirmish games in and that can’t be far off, size wise. Besides this is the mad bugger who built a model Reichstag, the size of a small bungalow.
-
I'm calling this done
-
And...
-
And...
-
Very nice.
-
Trailer
-
Last one for now.
No idea what to do with it now... lol
-
The dust is from Flory Models, water based sand wash. Just slap it on then gently scrub it off with a damp cotton bud. Great stuff and very easy to use. Much less smelly than enamel wash!
-
Very nice! Pigments are fun, albeit a bit messy to play with.
-
It looks fantastic .. :-*
But I still have no idea why you chose this project? o_o
-
Driving one in Mudrunner/Spintires was the cause ;)
The wash is nowhere near as smelly or messy as the enamel washes or powders. It wipes up with a damp cloth. Really easy to use and exactly what I wanted. Just dusty not damaged or very worn.
-
Love this :-* :-* :-*.
