Title: Return to Rynn's World
Post by: Pictors Studio on April 26, 2020, 01:12:04 PM
It has been a long time since I've done anything for my Crimson Fists army.  I originally had painted the first Primaris marines I got when the 8th edition set came out as Ultramarines and got a Gulliman to go along with them but then realized that I probably wasn't going to play games of 40K big enough to justify a Primarch so I sold them off and did Crimson Fists.

I have always loved the picture from Rogue Trader, it was such a big part of what drew me to 40K so many years ago.  So I decided to honor that with a Crimson Fists force.

I started them in the Fall of 2017 and haven't painted one in about a year or so.  I consider the army mostly finished with a couple of squads of Intercessors and a couple of squads of the Reivers and a jump pack squad with plasma pistols.  I have a squad of the jump pack guys with autocannons I still need to do.

With the lockdown going on I decided to get the Redemptor Dread and paint that up to support them.

Here it is.

Nothing fancy on it.  Just a dread in Crimson fists scheme.

But it did re-inspire me to start on the Fists again.  I primed the jump pack autocannon guys and will try to get started on them today.

After that it is going to be the Orks.  I have a bunch assembled from when Shadowwar came out that I haven't even primed yet, but once these marines are done the Orks are up next.

It is going to take piles of them to do Rynn's World properly but I'll get there.

I didn't get much done while I was on-call yesterday but I did get these three finished.

They have been sitting on my desk assembled and unpainted since about Christmas when I got them with the set of Vanguard Space Marines.  I used the rest of the figures in that set as Alpha Legion guys, but these guys didn't really fit in with my concept of that force.

So they are joining my Crimson Fists.

The models are well sculpted.  I don't know why GW is giving the jump pack guys the heavy weapons this go round but they are kind of cool looking even if it seems absurd that they could shoot those things in the air.

Maybe that isn't the idea though, maybe they are designed to get on the flank of enemy armoured columns and hit their side armour. I'm not really sure how Autocannons work in 8th edtion but they were pants in previous editions for the most part. Not powerful enough to hurt most vehicles (not even powerful enough to auto penetrate space marine armour,) and not shooty enough to gun down large groups of infantry.

I never really cared though as that one Chaos marine with the autocannon was my favourite of the old metal heavy weapons guys.  He always made it onto the table when I was playing my black legion.

I guess these things will shoot up Orks well enough.

Looking good! I'm not sure about jump pack guys with heavy weapons either, but there must be some logic in it somewhere!

Here is a start to the forces of the Arch-Arsonist.

These were the Orks that came with the ShadowWar: Armageddon set.  They are the same as the regular orks you can get from GW as far as I know.

There are three more of them to do and one will be done today.  I also have a unit of stormboyz and one of them I've painted but still need to base.  The others are assembled.

I didn't see why orks should all have the same skin tone so I've varied the greens I'm using on them to give the army a more diverse appearance.  I'll probably try to get some different greens each time I do a batch with 4 or 5 different base colours.

Doing the Crimson Fists is going to have been the short part.

Got some more of the ladz done.

Here are a couple of Stormboyz.  I really like this kit.  There are lots of ways to customize it so you could probably build 3 of the kits with all of the ladz looking completely different.

Next up are the last of the regular boyz that I had assembled including one with big stonking gun.  I love that model.

And all of them together.

They will probably be split among two different groups eventually.  I assembled them for Shadowwar originally.

Guess I can use them for that too.

Here is an old school metal Killa Kan I bought awhile back, I guess more than a decade ago now.

Pretty quick model to paint, depending on what you do with it.  That is all the Bad Moons I have for now.

Next up is the Warboss of the Goff, all angry after being demoted in March.

This one is a big hunking piece of metal.  It was bought when it first game out back in 2000 or so.  The dead marine on the base is from much earlier than that.

There will probably be contingents from each of the ork klans eventually.

The Bad Moons are the first contingent I want to finish, they will have more Dakka than the others and likely be the smallest contingent in terms of models, having Mega armoured Nobz, dreads and kans as well as a fair number of heavily armed boyz.

The Goffs will be next and will have mostly Boyz and regular Nobz with a few special things, like a dread and tankbustas.

After that I'll probably work on the Evil Suns and get all the vehicles in there. But I might get a contingent of snakebites as they will likely be the smallest contingent and the marines will only encounter them once they get into the sewers.

Nice progress on the overall forces.   :-*

I would guess the jumping heavy weapons would fire on landing with their move giving them the chance to find rear or side armor.  If that is still a thing in the latest version.   I would have to agree though, the autocannon always seemed a bit to weak and too slow though it had a decent range.

Thanks.  I got another 8 Orks for the horde primed yesterday.  I just need another 3 and I think the infantry are done for the Bad Moons, that will be two units of 10 each.  I might make them 15, but I want the badmoons to be more reliant on tek than on boyz.

Speaking of tek here are the first 5 of their stormboyz.

And another of the Ladz with a big shoota!

There is no side or rear armour in the latest version, something I think is lacking.  It would be a simple mater with the current rules, to reduce the save for vehicles by 1 if you weren't shooting at the front arc, unless you wanted that not to happen in which case you could have a special rule for Land Raiders, Necron monoliths and so on.

Nice work!

I do love the Rynn’s World Campaign with the Crimson Fists holding out despite losing their Fortress.

Just a few more of the Boyz done this time.  I was on-call yesterday and it was a pretty light day so I managed to finish up some of the Ork models I've been working on.  So I've got 8 more boyz for the two units.

Here are the Shoota Boyz.

They are my favourite of the two units.  I just love the idea of all these Orks running around spraying fire everywhere in the hopes that they will hit something by volume.

When we use them we will probably be using the 3rd edition rules but it seems like the Orks are one of the forces that changed the least with the 8th edition re-do.

Here is the whole unit of them so far, just six of the Ladz done but that is about a third of what I'll have eventually.  I'm thinking 18-20 of these guys as the one unit.

Then there are the Choppa and Slugga ones.  In the Bad Moon force this will be the biggest unit I think.  There will probably be a solid 24 of them in the end.

The idea for the Bad Moons is that about half of their orks will be specialists of some kind.  So about 40 regular boyz, then 15 Stormboyz, 20 Burna boyz and 10 tank bustas for the infantry, backed up by a big gun,  a Dread and a unit of Killa Kans.

They will be lead by a Big mek who will probably have an assistant mek with him.

Here are all the ones done so far:

And an Assault Marine's view of them.

This is about all the Orks I have at home at the minute.  I do have at least an unopened Shadowar: Armageddon box at my storage unit so I'll grab that while I'm out there this weekend.

I'm about to head to my FLGS and see if they got my order in and if not I'll probably pick up whatever Ork stuff they have left.

A lovely bunch of very well painted miniatures :) . I'm watching this one :) .

One thing that I am not really sure of is the 'updating' with Primaris. It's difficult for a 'dyed in the wool' 40K enthusiast to get to grips with... hopefully, the quality of your work, will help me get past this :) .

Thanks!

Here are just a few more.  One Nob that will be leading the Bad Moon Shoota Boyz and another Nob that will be part of the Goff contingent and one more of the ladz from the Bad Moons.

Pretty sunny out today for a change so it was tough to get a good snap.

I wanted to make the Nob for the Bad Moons look a little extra teknicul because they have the gear so he got a bionik bonce.  I don't know if that is a thing in 8th edition anymore but there it is. I gave him a custom shoota because I wanted him to fit in with the rest of the ladz and be more shooty than choppy.  Hopefully with 25 of them they might kill a marine during the course of the game.

The Goff contingent is going to be heavy on Nobz, I'll max out how many Nobz I can take and back them up with a strong mob of ladz too.

Here is the first one:

Since we're using movie marine rules I haven't messed about with giving them anything that doesn't increase the strength of their attacks.  They will all have big choppas or power claws or equivalent so they can actually cause some havoc.

I got the rest of the Nobz done.  A nice set, certainly a lot of potential to make a large variety of different models.  Which is good, because from how they have the Start Collecting boxes set up it seems like I'll have a lot of them.

This is all of them.

I still need to drill their gun barrels out but I'll do that tonight.  Here are the new ones that I've done.

My favourite is the one with the ax gripped in two hands.  Not so much space to put a lot of checkers on him but I guess he's Goffy enough as it is.

Then there were more Boyz.  Always more Boyz.  More shootas than sluggas this time, the races are evening up.

I like the colour scheme I did on the sluggas skin this time.  I'm still in the mind of doing them in a variety of different greens but if I were to do them in one it would be that one.  Seems a good colour for a military race.

Very nice!

You’ve inspired me to paint up enough minis to refight the Battle At The Farm (from Rogue Trader).

That is my plan too.  Only I'm going to do it with the original number of Space Marines but use the movie marine rules for them and put in enough Orks to fight them.

Then the marines are going to have to go through tunnels and get to a besieged city.

They will fight Bad Moons in the first part, Blood Axes in the second and the city is being besieged by Goffs.

Here are some more Nobz for the Goffs, this is the first unit of Goffs done.

Those are the six I got painted last night and here is the whole unit together with the ones I finished the day before.

Just a few more of the ladz from when I was on-call over the weekend.

One more shoota boy for the Bad Moons and my first two Goff boyz, slugga and choppa boyz as well as an ammo runt for the Nobz.  Up next is another shoota boy for the Bad Moons and one more Stormboy. Then some goff boyz with big shootas.

After I get those guys done I'm going to try to power through another unit of Nobz.

Thanks guys!

I got about 16 done since last Friday so thought it was time for a group shot.  Or a few group shots.

Here is Goff Nob mob one:

Goff Nob mob two:

Right now each one only has 6 models in it.  Eventually they will be 10 man Goff Nob mobs. Right now I'm planning for three of them.  I have another 4 Nobz primed and ready to be painted now so that will finish off one of these groups.  And I have enough to make a total of 25 of them so I'll need to get one more box.

There are only three Goff Boyz so far, but they will be getting some reinforcements this week.

And a Goff Group shot:

And now for the Bad Moons.

These were the ones I started with and will be the ones the Astartes first encounter.

First up are the Shoota Boyz.  I have 18 of them so far.  They have their Nob, one guy with a big shoota and one guy with a Rokkit Laucha.  This will be the biggest mob in the Bad Moon force.  Ultimately they will be about 30 strong with another Rokkit Launcha in the mix.  The amount of shooting they do is going to be stupid.

Here are the Slugga and Choppa Boyz.  I'll probably ultimately only have 20 of them.  There are 14 so far with a Nob and a guy with a big shoota.

These guys will be slaughtered like chickens by the marines probably.  I don't even know if they stand much of a chance of even making it into combat.  They will get another big shoota guy in their last 6.  He might get painted tonight.

Here is a group shot of them all including the Stormboyz of which I got one new one done so there are a total of six of them now.

It is a total of 38 Bad Moons so far and a 16 Goffs.  So I'm about a third of the way to where I need to be as far as models are concerned for this army.

Here is a top down shot of all the Bad Moons.

It is nice to see them all in one spot.  I'm getting ready to move here in the next week so this will probably be my last chance to post pictures of them all together for a little bit.  They have outgrown the first storage box I had them in so I'll have to find them another one tomorrow.

Title: Re: Return to Rynn's World
Post by: Pictors Studio on June 18, 2020, 08:10:47 PM
I'm moving this week so that production line has slowed considerably.  But I did get the first of the Blood Axes done.  These guys will have mostly Kommandos with some boyz and a boss.

As the old lore said these guys had the most in common with hummies some of them are going to have camo.  They are going to be in units of 10 I think, also in line with the hummies.

So probably 30 boyz in 3 units.  1 with choppas, 2 with shootas and then two units of Kommandos.

The marines are going to encounter them while making their way through the underground tunnels as they head towards the ruined city.  I don't anticipate the number of Blood Axes to be much of a problem for the Astartes.  I doubt the former will even be able to kill one guy, but they might inflict a couple of wounds.

This is going to be the only group of Orks that don't recycle so when their units get wasted they are done.  At least that is the plan.  I'll have to see how the text game goes for the first part.

Great work as always, Pictors.

I have always loved the picture from Rogue Trader, it was such a big part of what drew me to 40K so many years ago.

I remember when my friend brought his brand new RT book over. I was sold the moment I saw the cover.

Thank you!  My move is just about done now and I have my new office set up so I finally managed to get some painting done.  I managed seven more Orks. Two Bad Moon shoota boyz, three Bad Moon Choppa Boyz and two more Goff Nobz.  I now have 19 BM shootas, 16 BM choppas and 22 Goff Nobz as well as the rest of the stuff, so the units are growing.

I've got another 5 Boyz on the table that will hopefully be finished tonight or tomorrow then I think I only have about 3-5 more figures here before I have to go buy some more of them.

Title: Re: Return to Rynn's World
Post by: Pictors Studio on July 04, 2020, 01:59:12 PM
I managed to get a few more Orks done.  This will probably be my last update with just regular boyz and Nobz as I have to get to work on the specialist troops next.  Since there are so many boyz done with so many to do I'll probably only post fully completed units of the regular ladz as they get done.

Here are the next lot of Slugga and Choppa boyz.  There are 21 in this mob now.

Then some more shoota boyz for the Bad Moons. These guys are now 25 strong.

Plus a couple of Goffs.  The one is going straight in with the Nobz giving me 21 of them now, so that will be either two units of 10 and an extra or 3 units of 7.

I got some Burna boyz the other day and the first one is on my desk with the metal work already done so hopefully we will see that whole unit finished by the end of next week.

Thank you.  It has been a fun project.  I just finished a unit of Burna Boyz and the last of the regular boyz got done as a unit of Goff Shootas.

These guys are going to be part of a 15 man unit eventually.  I'll buy some more when the FLGS gets some in stock again.  In the meanwhile I think the next Ork project, will be a Trukk to get the lads up.  I'm thinking that is going to be a Goff Trukk but I'm not 100% on that yet.

I really like the models.  It would be nice if they included a way to make 5 of them so I could have a unit of 15 with only one spanner but you can't do that with what is in the set and they can have a spanner for every 5 models.  I guess if I were carting around a flammable liquid on my back that was built by an Ork I'd probably want someone on hand to give it the odd tune up here and there.

And then some more Goff Boyz.

So we've got something completely different now.  Some Crimson Fists.

These guys seemed to fit in better with my Crimson Fists than with the Black Templars as I was doing the rest of the Indomitus figures.

The bikes are just fantastic:

You get enough of them in the set to look like a complete unit.  They are dynamic.  The details are great and they don't even take that long to paint.

If I had a complaint it would be that the one guys sword is sticking out to the side making him a little bit more difficult to transport but that is a minor quibble as it does look very cool that way.

Then there are the Melta gun guys.

These guys are excellent fire support models.  They look like they are toting big devastating weapons.

Having a look at the rules I'm thinking I will probably change things about for my Rynn's World game a little bit for both of these sets.

The melta-guns need to be a little bit more destructive.  I'm thinking that they might roll 2d6 for damage if I decide to go with the 9th edition rules, or even roll 4d6 and drop the lowest two results.

This would really let the squad inflict some damage on Ork vehicles.

The bikes are pretty good at running the enemy down but I'm not sure that is how I want to play them.  I think it would be better if they were marines that moved to a location and were able to attack from there.  But then their equipment would be different, like they would have rifles instead of close combat weapons.  I'll either convert another set of them if I can get my hands on them or play them the way they are.

It does make a little more sense for an 8' tall warrior in a suit of indestructible power armour mounted on a stonking bike that could carry all of that to charge right through the enemy.

Plus I suppose it is more fun.

And now for some Grots:

These little guys have been a long time in coming.  Getting a little done here and there.  I still have another four to go and then I'll probably buy the plastic boxed set so I have a herder to go with them.  That will give me a unit of 25 of them.

In the game the Grots aren't about to do much against Space marines using the movie marine rules.  What they will provide is moving cover for the Orks.  I might also allow the Orks to advance over them using fleet of foot rules.

And now the first of the looters.

These come in the same kit as the burna boyz.  The frames contain parts for both.  The nice thing about the Ork range is that most of the kits are completely compatible.  If you buy two sets of the lootas/burnas (5 figures each) and a set of the Ork boyz, which are about half the price per figure, you can actually make  9 lootas and 9 burnas and have a Nob and 2 extra boyz left over. So while the set seems pretty expensive at first  you can combine it with cheaper sets to moderate the overall price of a big army.

They are pretty cool figures.  These lot are going in with the Bad Moons to provide some much needed fire support to all of the ladz that will be going in to get toe-to-toe with the humies.

The models have all kinds of neat details on them.  The one weapon on the close side of the second picture, for example, has an imperial guard lasgun worked into his shoota.  You can still see half the aquila on the side of it.

I've been working on some more Orks for this project lately.

So far I've just got the Meganobz done. I'll have another set of these eventually for the Goffs, but these first ones are for the Bad Moons.

I've given them the shooty option as that seemed most appropriate for the Bad Moons.  I'll probably give the double kill saws to the Goffs to make them different and they look neat.

This one has my favourite face:

It looks sort of Judge Dreadd-y in some way, maybe like Judge Death.  At any rate they all are basically the same in game terms.  Hopefully they will bring some close combat power to what is, at this point, a very shooty army for the Orks.

It has been a while since I painted a squig, but here we go:

This little Oiler guy comes with the set and it is too funny to leave him out of the unit.  I bet he can absorb a wound or something too when I look at the rules for them.

I have a dreadnought assembled as well as some more Looters and Burna boyz so I'm not sure what will be next.  Probably I'll start on the dread and get some other stuff done while I'm working my way through that.  This first dread is also going to be a Bad Moons dread.  I'll do a Goff one eventually too, I suppose.

Nope.  I got the dread done first.

I don't actually have the Ork codex yet so I just did him with the classic flamer and missile launcher.  I'll probably do the Goff one with 4 times claws/saws to make him more melee oriented.

It is a pretty nice model.   There were a few places where it wasn't clear how it was supposed to go together but I think I figured it out.  It has a few options in there and I chose the nerdiest looking one for the Bad Moons.  The Goff one will have a more mean looking face.

I guess more Lootas are coming next.

Yeah, this project has been going on since May.  I'm hoping to have it wrapped up by this May and run a game with them sometime this summer.

I just finished some more Burna Boyz and Lootas.  The Lootas will need two more models to be complete but I think the Burna Boyz are done until I do the test game at least.

So there are nine Burna Boyz now.

I haven't read the rules for them in a while but I think they can use their weapons as flamers or as a close up cutting torch in melee.  They will probably be one of the most effective units against the Crimson Fists in the early fighting and the Fists will definitely have to watch the civilians and keep them away from the flames.

I like these models, they are very brutal and orky.  I kind of wish the flame throwers would go together in different ways so you could build more varied models but the fact that the whole ork range is compatible with itself goes a long way to adding variety.

The Lootas are cool because their weapons do variable things in past editions of the rules.  I'm not exactly sure what they do now so I'll have to check on that, but they are going to provide fire support for the rest of the force.

There is one more of them to do as well as a mekanik to lead them.  The last one is underway and the mekanik is sprayed and on a stick ready to be painted. He will have a big shoota rather than a kustom blasta.

This brings the force up to 80 Bad Moon models and about 30 Goff models plus a couple of Blood Axes.  I have some more Goff nobz ready to be painted as well as the two guys to finish this unit off but the big next project will be the Bad Moon Warboss who is going to be a Big Mek with a shokk attack gun.

Their Warboss is done so it is time for another group shot of the Bad Moons.

That is all of the Bad Moons so far.  As seen previously I do have some Goffs.  I'm working on some Blood Axe commandos next.  I only have 5 of them and it seems likely that is all I'm going to get for a while until I figure out how to source more varied ones.

One bad aspect to the finecast (okay another bad aspect) is that these things are sold as boxes so if I want a unit of 10 Kommandos I have to buy three boxes of 5 and have 2 Nobz left over.

Here is the Warboss, a big mek with a shokk attack gun.

This is my favourite Ork concept and this model is a pretty skillfully executed version of it.  The gun takes these little greenskins called snotlings and teleports them into the enemy.  Basically you shoot creatures into the enemy.  The first version had a little hopper on top that you would poor snotlings into and you actually had bases of snotlings to keep around the mek as ammo for the weapon. Each time you fired, away went a base of snotlings.  It was brilliant.

This version doesn't have the hopper.  Instead it employs a vacuum device to suction up the little snotlings that are around the meks feet.  Eventually I'll get bases of snotlings again for this guy but they might go into battle before that happens.  We'll see.  I may have to get some of the Foundry Orclings for this.

I'm not sure how they work in the current edition of the rules.  They used to have a table where all kinds of horrible things could happen to the enemy from them crashing a vehicle because of the frenzied snotlings getting into the gears to the snotlings just being killed and it stopping the unit for a turn.  As with all 2nd edition Ork weapons it was a total crap shoot.

It has been a while since I painted any Orks but the new Kill Team set got me jazzed up to do some more.

I finally finished 3 of my 5 Ork commandos that I got in December.

I obviously had to get these guys done before I get my hands on Octarius, otherwise they will probably never be finished.  Just the leader of them left now and the squad of 5 will be finished.

The Beastsnaggas boxed set came out a little while back and though I said I wasn't going to paint them for a while I did get a little excited and did 5 of them.

I did 3 as Goffs and 2 as Bad Moons.  I'm not making separate units of them, just mixing them into existing units where they will be slightly bigger than the regular guys.

Then there was the painboy.  This guy I started a long time ago and only just got around to finishing.

I really like this model, it was a bit of a pita to paint but has a lot of cool little details on him and is very characterful.

And what would doing a batch of Orks be worth if you didn't do a small set of grots with them.

Fun little old-school metal grots to join the pile.  Next up is Zagrod to lead the lot of them into the teeth of death for the Arch Arsonist.

Indeed.  All ready to light some jadeberry trees on fire for the Arch-Arsonist.  :)

Need to finish up my own unpainted ork stuff.  Some of it's been sitting on the sprue for years.

I managed to finish my Battlewagon.  I also have some Tankbustas and commandoes that need pictures posted.

The game is this upcoming weekend on Orktober 30th.  We'll have piles and piles of Orks to take on the squad of Space Marines.

I still have 1 more Deffkopta to do and a Stompa before Saturday and hopefully I also get to another half dozen Beastsnaggas.

Battlewagon evokes just a bit of Afrika Korps with that color scheme.

Nice looking pile of greenskins, good to see someone else's for a change.  My orks have pretty much turned into a forever project for me, every time I think I'm done something else catches my fancy.

What rules set are you using for the October 30th game?

We did a little test play of it last night using 3.5 rules.

Here are some pictures from the game:

We played about 4 turns just to see how it would work.  The Orks recycle for the regular units but not the Stompa.  The Space Marines lost one guy during those 4 turns, but several marines were injured.  The Orks lost about 6 units and the Dread.

We played the actual game yesterday on Warhammer day.

It went pretty well.  The game went how I envisioned the art from the Rogue Trader book playing out.  A massive horde of aliens were approaching these cut-off and out numbered marines.

These guys didn't all cluster up, back-to-back as the art, but they did die a couple of marines a turn until they were all wiped out on turn five.

After killing piles and piles of Orks,  of course.

They killed the dread, the battlewagon, a unit of Meganobz, a unit of lootas, a unit of burnaboys, a unit of deff koptas and three units of regular ork boys.

The Stompa killed a marine in close combat.  The others died from slow attrition after being shot or assaulted by many, many orks.

Here was the last marine to die standing in the midst of a horde of greenskins.

This was the start of the game.

The marines scattered right away.  With the ordinance coming down from the Stompa and the Shok Attack gun, they didn't want to be too close to each other.

The Orks stomp up with the Deff Dread, confident that it will be able to inflict some damage, while more lootas come on from the Fist's flank after the first unit of them was wiped out.

The first marine to engage the enemy at close quarters is quickly surrounded.

He manages to extricate himself from that situation and only has to face the dread.

He wards off the attacks from the hulking machine before plunging his combat knife through an opening in the machine's armour and right into the Ork piloting it.

The marines continue to fall back with the menacing xenos hot on their trail.

Sergeant Cabrera moves to rescue one of the battle brothers from the greenskin tide.  Between them they slaughter many of the foul aliens and set the rest to flight.

Meanwhile the Orks bring their Deff Koptas around to cut off any retreat.

After dealing with the Orks, the Astartes turn on the vehicle that brought them to the battlefield.  They quickly barge aboard and slaughter all the crew, leaving some krak grenades behind to render the machine inoperable.

Eventually even those heroes succumb to their injuries and only one battle brother is left standing.

Surrounded by the screeching green Gretchin dragging at his armour the marine makes a final standing, selling his life dearly, but still losing it.
