More dwarves in progress on the painting table. No basing yet as I need to add some banners and some of the hornblowers need to be based up with heroes who are yet to be painted.
The limited colour scheme is being tentatively expanded with some dark blues. Think it’s working so far, though the next batch may be darker.
Figures mostly by Conqueror and Vendel (now Thistle and Rose) with a few interlopers from other ranges. Shields are a mix of LBM transfers and freehand.

Lovely work James :-* :-* :-*
They really have a grittier look to them than then LotR GW stuff. A brilliant imaginative rendition of The Silmarillion :)

Ah, memories!
Lovely.
-
Great minis, great brushwork!
-
Very nice!! Some cracking looking dwarves! :)
-
Great :)
-
Beautiful work, as if straight out of Middle Earth or the Icelandic sagas. :-*
-
Great stuff James. Very much how I imagine Tolkien's Dwarves should look.
-
Great indeed. They shine gloriously!
-
Crikey-Great work! I particularly like the shields :)
-
Groovy!
-
Brilliant! Always loved the vendel dwarves :-*

I mean't to ask James, how is that rule set of yours developing for the First Age?
-
These are ace!
Does anybody say 'ace' any more? lol

Yes! Having given up saying it at school, I seem to have picked it up again from Nick Northstar and Dave Woodward. Dunno if it’s a Nottingham thing or what.
Anyway, glad you liked the dwarves.

Excellent project, love seeing these dwarves!

Thank you! Just LBM transfers with a bit of blending in.

It’s not specifically First Age, but obviously a lot of our games are that way inclined at the moment. I was hoping to do a large Silmarillion battle at Partizan this weekend but will be going virtual instead. Anyway, rules are ok but I’m just working on a better playtest version and scenarios at the moment. Trying to work and wrangle kids under lockdown takes up more time than you might think.

Very inspirational...excellent painting!
As you can see from my profile picture I'm also really fond of the Vendel dwarves and now also the Conqueror ones. I'm not painting much these days but ought to pick up a few of my undercoated dwarfs again...they were a delight to paint (not too much fussy details, clear and clean sculpts).

Good news. Your talent at writing rules is notable so I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a set when they are released. :)

I can imagine. My nieces tire me out and they live in London! lol

Which LBM transfers did you use on Conqueror shields?
I have hundreds of these guys to paint and want to steal your idea.
Do you think transfers will work on dome shape Thistle and Rose (Vendel) shields (without the little triangle bosses)?
-
These are wonderful sculpts and astonishingly good brush work that suits them.
Proper ornate, but grim and functional Dwarfs... (none of this no-kneed, beer belly, missing neck anatomoy that you get from the kind of manufacturers who thinks sticking a grave stone slab on the end of a stick makes a functional weapon and that a mohican is the only cool hairstyle)

Great sculpts, great brushwork!

Cheers! I used a few older Dark Age Celtic transfers, but mostly the Oathmark dwarf ones from Northstar. They won’t work on the old Vendel domed shields. I ditched all mine and replaced them with regular flat dark ages types.
-
Really great work on them. Definitely makes me want to pick some up!
-
That banner is amazing
-
Great figures and painting!

Lovely James :-*

Boom.
Deal with that.
That banner is Bostin .

Excellent stuff!
