Title: New games room
Post by: gamer Mac on May 10, 2020, 06:19:22 PM
Mrs Mac has allowed me to spend some money
but it is not so easy during the lockdown but I have ordered a garden office that I am going to use for a games room,it is only 10 by 8 but I don't think my garden would take anything bigger. it is not due to be delivered until the middle of next month
(https://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/46/1912-100520170119-463011994.jpeg)
I will need the lockdown to finish so my brother can wire it in
I will take some photos of my progress

Good luck and enjoy.
I did a similar thing about 4 years ago.
10ft by 20ft.
Really enjoy the fact that I can paint and build down there, but also that I can leave a game set up, and no-one says “can I have the table back now for dinner ?”
I stained the outside of my one, and just yesterday, I finished staining it for a second time in four years. That bit, ain’t fun.

We’re on the process of doing something similar. It’s very early dats and we’re undecided on what to go for. We’ve been exploring sheds, garden houses and garages. Yours looks like a nice choice!

you guys leave your paints out there all summer (and winter), I mean you guys paint in there permanently? I would like something similar, the problem is that it's 40 celsius (104 fahrenheit) here in the summer and -10 (15 fahrenheit) in the winter. I'd like something that would be a painting shed, but permanently :)

I took a while to decide what to do ,started off going to try and build something but was struggling with the lockdown went with this as a simple solution

Looks great.

Depending upon which direction your garden faces, you might want to consider some blinds, to avoid it getting too hot, or fading.

Welcome to the brotherhood of ‘shed wargamers’!

You can’t beat it. A retreat and area of self indulgence to leave set up whatever you are currently playing.

I’ve been using a 16 x 12 for years .... one tip - insulate it. You will not regret it. I lined mine and insulated it, it’s terrific all year round, cool in summer and warm enough and dry enough in winter. I use a small oil filled radiator at coldest time of year.

The hut in the basement. I costed up how much it would have cost to plaster the basement walls and put a floor in. The hut came to half the price!

Avoid temptation and keep your table limited to 3'x5' to allow player room - if you intend to have guests.  Maybe go with a "murphy bed" type table that folds up against one wall when you need space for other things, though that loses the 'leave it setup' advantage.

If I could talk the wife into it - and find the funds - I'd covert our rectangular swimming pool into my personal hobby bunker.  Why, heck, if I surrender space in the garage she just might go for it!  She'd then shop for a lot more junk she will use once or nought and it will hang around until it goes off to be donated to charity or thrown away.  Okay, I'll keep the pool.  :o

The windows look great in the picture but will be a pain in person I suspect.  Depends on your personal goal, though.  Enjoy when it gets set up!

Lots of light can be nice during the day.  Might need blinds though.

I generally like my basement office.  I have designs on some main floor bedrooms but have been unable to establish and maintain a beach head in one so far.

Dig for Victory?

I have tentatively floated the idea of a garden retreat to herself, but she has pointed out the wargames stuff is currently occupying most of the shed, a corner of the family room, and a decent chunk of the dining room. I am biding my time till my mother can no longer live independently, and then investigating craning her entire outdoor studio into the back yard.

don't stop now, keep the base going and include the base for the green shed...

you know it makes sense, build new shed around it, then remove it.

much better use of the space.

you know you want to  o_o

Any shed needs to be raised off ground level to avoid this...if possible jack the shed up onto pillars. Rotting from the bottom up is a sure fire way to lose your investment

What a great shed 8) As soon as we built ours we gave it a timber oil treatment and painted the floor(then sanding, then re-paint,groan) and put a Persian rug down. I was going to fit a floating floor, the rug was much easier. Hopefully your windows are double glazed?

The windows are a bit of a worry, just thin brittle plastic , not a great seal around them either may have to see about proper glass

Colin - keep an eye out in local skips for old double glazed windows - you might need to 'fit' them into new wooden frames but it will be a lot cheaper than buying new glazing
