Title: Colour of Stuka bombs c.1940?
Post by: Baron von Wreckedoften on May 15, 2020, 10:05:09 AM
I understand that the Stuka could carry 250kg and 500kg bombs, and that these were a little less varied in 1940 than they were later on in the conflict.

But what colour were the bombs and what markings did specific types have?

(And yes, I have just bought the "unexploded bomb" markers from Sabotag3d - how did you know?)

Try the reprinted article about half way down. I think you’ll find SC-250s were dark green or  grey.

Had a similar question myself a while back.

Thanks - spent an interesting 30 minutes reading through that and the associated discussions.  As a rule of thumb, it seems that lighter bombs (without a ring around the tail fins) were light coloured - sky blue or buff - whilst the ones with just fins were dark - green or grey.  I shall proceed accordingly.....

Your question got my brain wandering off in random directions. After rewatching Danger UXB for the umpteenth time, I got to thinking about fuse types.j

Anyway, the IWM has some examples in its collection. If you look at the following artifact you’ve got a pretty good indication of the colour as the top of the fuse would be in the body colour. This one is in excellent nick and it’s doubtful that it would have been re-painted.

I’m not suggesting Stuka loads would typically have had EIZ 50 anti-handling fuses but it’s a 1940 dated bomb so the colour should be spot on for one of the mid sized bombs, like the SC 50.

Now I’m back to thinking about buying a 1/48 Tilly to paint up as an RE bomb squad vehicle, with the bright red mudguards.  >:(

Hmm looks like I have to paint some red or yellow stripes on my grey bombs?
