For a while I have been thinking about branching out into the Italian Wars and I've finally started to put brush to miniatures. I expect this to be a slow burn project not least of which the time it takes to paint each figure (and I haven't started on the Landsknechts yet).
Here is the first unit typical of the Spanish forces in the early part of the Italian wars, a unit of Genitor light cavalry. Figures by TAG, flag by Pete's Flags and based as skirmishing light cavalry.

Ken - That would be great but I'll have to go some to match your output.

More fab work Hu :-* :-* :-*
Those Foundry Gendarme's will never go out of fashion 8)
I'm (soon/soon-ish) going to start working on a 1250 pt army for Swordpoint which will of course be usable with Hail Caesar, WAB and a my favourite for the period, based on just reading the rules, Furioso.
-
Amazing.
Especially the Genitors. Lovely miniatures, painting is fantastic.

Looking very good!

True but I just wish they produced more variety in their armoured horses or sold the riders separately.

Haven't tried Furioso, mine are based for Pike and Shotte, which seem to work well with a few minor tweaks to get the period feel.
Amazing.

Next up are some Spanish Arquebus. Foundry from their Conquistador range.

They look superb :-*
Do you think the Foundry and TAG Arquebusiers will mix well? If so great as that's more possible variation :)

Lovely work!

Thanks. The Foundry figures in this range are a litle bit chunkier so I wouldn't mix them in the same units. I think the Eureka figures mix better with TAG. I'll be painting them up in due course and will post a comparison picture.

They look very good. You have hit a productive vein, Gary!

Thanks. Now to keep the vein open, so to speak. ;)

Lovely work indeed. You have a fine army shaping up.

Smashing stuff Ru :-* :-* :-*

Coming out really good!
Well done! :-*

Looking good Gary.
Copplestone sculpts - the last ones he ever did for Foundry IIRC - you can’t beat them.
-
Great looking units! (Must not get distracted!)

Aren't the flags upside down???
BTW, do TAG and Foundry mix up well? I've never seen a comparison pic...
In other order of things: great painting! Hope you get some "french" rivals in the area (or enough patience to build your own french army)

Lovely additions Gary :)

Upside down flags - Oops. Thanks - well spotted. I'll make some adjustments later.
Comparison - I'll be putting up some pics of the TAG Spanish Pike shortly and you can judge if they match well.
French - My regular war gaming opponent is covering off the French and we'll both be adding some Italians to our forces.

lol You're not alone. I did just the same thing with the Queens Colours on Neil's Bluecaps for the Indian Mutiny! lol
I didn't notice until two years later when someone pointed it out o_o o_o o_o

Another unit of Spanish infantry for the Italian Wars. This time a pike unit, TAG miniatures and Pete's Flags banner (this time the right way up).
The tag figures are much smaller then the Foundry Conquistador. I'll show a comparison in the next post, when I attempt to put the whole lot into a Colunella.

Great stuff :-* :-* :-*
Good to see this project getting bigger 8)
I find that the TAG mini's fit really well with the Perry European Mercenaries stuff, although their armours are from a little later. Less so with the bulkier Foundry sculpts- which are great in their own right.
-
Sumptuous! :-*
I'd be interested in seeing the size comparison. Sometimes I think we put too much importance in making sure all the figures are the same height. That isn't the norm in real life.

Although my attention over the last lockdown switched to other things I did manage to finish off two Spanish Colunellas but didn't post pictures at the time. Here is my take on how they might look. TAG Pike, Foundry Conquistador for Arquebus and Sword and Buckler men. Flags by Pete's Flags.
As you can see the Foundry and TAG miniatures are quite different sizes, especially the Sword and Buckler men, and I think I will have to re-do these units. :-[ Comparison shot here:
I will either use the Foundry Spanish Pike to match the others or replace the Arquebus/Swordsmen figures with TAG figures so they match. Perhaps both so that I have different units but each unit with the same style of figures. I am also keen to see how the forthcoming Atlantic Wargames Conquistadors look and perhaps I might be able to utilise these. They would certainly be cheaper than Foundry who have put their prices up again.
Either way I will certainly increase the ratio of Arquebus from 8 to 12 or 16 figures in the unit. Perhaps the best way is to use the current Arqubusiers as skirmish infantry in a separate unit. Decisions, decisions :? :?

Thank you both very much.
I really enjoy the vibrant colours of this period, especially the Italians and I made the assumption that any Spanish force on the Italian mainland would also deck themselves out in similar styles, especially since some of the 'Spanish' troops were actually Neopolitans.
I plan to have an Italian contingent in the army so there is scope for even more flamboyant colours. And then of course there are the Landsknechts. So much variations in clothing styles, weapons and flags - not to mention the tactics. What's not to like about this period. :D :D
-
yay!
Love seeing TAG minis mixed with other folks minis...
(and thanks for posting to our Gallery pages, https://theassaultgroup.co.uk/my-account/user-gallery/?ug-gallery=gallery&order-category=92)

looking great!

Lovely looking Spanish! I don't think the variation is too bad between the Foundry conquistadors and TAG, although the Foundry landsknechts and Swiss are a bit closer, I'm also looking forward to the wargames Atlantic conquistadors either way you're troops look great!
