Title: How do you base your Zulus?
Post by: Cessna on May 22, 2020, 08:51:23 PM
I'm thinking 1" round bases, with movement trays, would look good.

How do you base yours?

2p coins, which, according to Wikipedia, are 25.9mm. I have no idea what that is in inches. Movement trays sound like a great idea, but as yet I have not made that step.

I always used to use the smaller 1p coins, but Zulus, and other shield-wielding tribal types tend to be unbalanced by their shields and tip over, so I switched to the bigger size of coin for better stability.

My Zulu War project (which by the way I've not updated on the LAF) will have three Zulu warriors on 50mm diameter bases. At the moment with my old Zulus are on 40x50 mm bases.

I started with 25mm MDF discs but moving them individually was a royal pita, especially the lightweight plastics, so started using the irregular shaped 3 and 6 hole movement trays. These work well for moving but I found that I really disliked the look of the half empty trays and could never quite get the right number of casualties to only remove full bases.
So I ended up keeping a couple of singles with each regiment and permanently fixing the rest into the 3 and 6 hole movement trays (sometimes 5 plus a scenic piece rather than the 6). Using singles mounted on slotta bases keeps everything the same height.

I based my Ngoni on plastic 25mm round bases and then put them in MDF movement trays I got off eBay. I much prefer robh basing above though that looks cool.

I also use 1" washers (steel, so I can store the figs attached to boxes with magnet sheet bottoms).

Metal washers can help steady plastic figures on fur mats and hill slopes, and you can get the warriors up tight and personal too.

I base five figures on 50x60 bases and then fit six of those bases on a regiment tray.

My Zulu's are the plastic 'Perry' ones. Their based on the Renedra bases that come with them. Using Black Powder rules. Working towards an army off at least 400 Zulu.
