Bronze Age Winter War.
Basically i have always wanted to do winter wargames terrain, but i also want to do some ancient greek (or greek myth) or some sort of bronze age Runequest inspired collection.
Since i am such a slow painter i will never get round to doing all the ideas i have, so some of them get mixed together.
After seeing some of the fantastic Angus McBride artwork with ancient warriors in winter i knew what i wanted to do.
Edit:
I have started a parallel thread - Bronze Age Winter Fantasy- on the Fantasy board (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=125554.0). I know that a certain amount of fantasy is ok on this board but as i was not sure where this slightly Runequest/Glorantha and Micheal Moorcock/Rodney Mathews inspired journey was leading i thought it was better to split it.

I love all the kitbashing that is being done at the moment (Frostgrave, AOS28, Oathmark etc.) so with this idea i could have a bash as well.
Started with some plastic Victrix Romes allied legions and just added some greenstuff (or card) cloaks and fur.

Oooh!
Looking forward to seeing where this goes. I have been playing around using the Wargames Atlantic Dark Ages Irish to make bronze age bandits. The sprue comes with 4 tunic/bare legged bodies, 2 trousers/bare torsos, 2 dogs and 2 cloaks - it might be handy?
-
Nicely done 8)
-
The winter soldiers are pretty cool looking and different.
I do love a bit of bronze age fantasy.
Have been running a small mini campaign set in an alternative Egypt.
-
Oh wow those look cool!
-
Good work, particularly like the full pelt :)
-
Awesome work - they look wonderful. :-*

Thanks a lot.

The irish sprue looks good but at the moment i am waiting for a handfull of single sprues i have ordered from ebay uk , greek hoplites, frostgrave barbarians and female soldiers etc. So i will have enough to play with for a while.

I checked out your bronze age Egypt thread and hope you continue it. I would like to see where it goes.

Thanks, although the full wolf skin came from a pack of animal skins i picked up at Tactica in february (I think from Stronghold Terrain, but i can't find it on their website). Since it was made of some sort of plastic i put it in boiling water for a while until it was soft enough to wrap it over the miniature

Thanks James. I have been been doing next to nothing in the hobby for a couple of years and its great to be back. Nice to see your Mars thread is still going strong.

Those are brilliant Robert :-*
Great to see you back at it.
Looking forward to seeing some of these figures in one of your beautifully staged scenic photographs :)
-
Great execution, of a very different idea. Looking forward to seeing more.

Steam flunky if you do Facebook you might want to check out the Annals of Aegyptus minor page.

You had me with Runequest and your beautiful figures :-* :-* :-* Looking forward to more :)
-
Brilliant idea! Love the figures so far. Looking forward to seeing more.
-
Made a few pieces of generic scenery that i could use for all sorts of winter games (or even as snow covered islands for something like WW2 Cruel Seas games in the Baltic, Russians vs Finns......Damn!! so many ideas, so little time)
The Battlemat is a frozen lake mat from an Italian company called PWorks. Really happy with the mat. Can recomend them.

Well is is my first shot in a long time.

My ideas for this bronze age winter skirmish are slowly forming.
It will probably be set in the south west alps during the 4th century BC.
Various celtic tribes in the area, not too far away we have the Greek colony of Massalia (Marseille) also there are Etruscans and Latin tribes.
I will probably start with a few skirmish games using Song of Blades and Heroes. When i have a few more minatures ready i will move up to Dragon Rampant. It might be fun to try out a bronze age Frostgrave adventure. (https://flic.kr/p/2jdz1iX)

Nice to see your Mars thread is still going strong.
It’s the project that will never die :D

Nice idea.

Here are my first kitbashed mountain tribe warriors

These are the first miniatures that will be representing my bronze age Alps mountain tribes. They are basically celtic warriors with an Etruscan or Latin influence. Due to the climate they dressed warmly and their arms and armour will regularly include captured equipment from neighboring peoples.
Torso's from frostgrave soldier sprues. Arms from Victrix Roman allied legion sprues. Heads from Crusador Miniatures Samnites. (https://flic.kr/p/2jfDThb)

They look great!
When you said Frostgrave bodies I wasn't convinced that they would work; but you've definitely changed my minf
-
Nice combo with the Frostgrave bodies
:)
-
☜ Oooh I like this ☞
-
Wow, this really looks awesome. Can't wait to see more!
-
Very original project - great work!
-
Those dudes look great. Good idea.
Are those Crusador Miniatures Samnites heads from a separate heads set or did you chop them off a full minature?
-
Thanks!

While i am waiting for the sprues i ordered to arrive i have painted up a few greeks.
The two on the left are the wonderful Lucid Eye miniatures from the Ziggurat series sculpted by Steve Saleh. They are bit pricey but i think they are worth it. The third figure is from Warlord games (i think from the sparten king blister). I added a cloak and a bit of fur.

I think they’re worth it too Robert. Gorgeous figures. The only problem is that they somewhat make the Warlord figure look a bit substandard ::)
(I’m sure he’s not, in the flesh as it were :))

I was actually thinking of picking up those exact two Lucid Eye minis the other day for... well not quite sure what project, but they look awesomely heroic, without being "too fantastical"!
-
They are beautiful! And I'm really liking that light blue green color really looks lovely with the winter theme! What paint did you use?

Thanks.
The paints question is difficult to answer. It was mainly the sea gray and pale green from Coat d'Arms and some colour called neotach from Warzone.
I have about 40 or 50 different paint pots that i have collected over the last 10 or 15 years from about 6 different companys. Coat d' arms,Warzone,Pegasus,Formula P3, valejo etc. Often they were cheap because they were being discontinued but if i liked the colour it did not matter.

The next 2 i am working on.
Bodies from Victrix Roman allied legion sprues and arms from Conquest games medieval archers plus a bit of greenstuff.

Once again, this is really cool! Great stuff. I'm jealous too, because my green stuff "skills" are currently limited to beards that always end up too Santa Claus-y lol

Nice putty work 8)

My green stuff skills are fairly limited but i think fur is easy to do. Give it a try, you just have make a lot of little cuts in it with the knife tip. I usually start around the top and then do another row below it and keep moving down
-
Finished painting the 1st two skimishers.
They represent Etruscan or Italian warriors from roughly the 4th century BC.
The type of bows and quivers is probably completely wrong but as i will mostly be using them for bronze age myth/legend/Runequest/maybe frostgrave/whatever, sort of games it does not matter.

Very original! I quite like the frostgrave kitbash!

Finished these two Volscians from Aventine Miniatures. They are built a bit stockier than Perry miniatures for example, but that makes them a joy to paint

Still loving this thread! Those Volscians and archers are superb. The addition of snow is like looking at this period from a whole new perspective.
-
I agree, the snow gives ancients a whole new lens. And the figures look fab!
-
They do look great on those very atmospheric (no pun intended!) bases :-*
I like the brushwork but I think it really shines on the Aventine Galatians :-*
-
I love what you've been doing with the fur additions. I will be undertaking an Hyberno-Norse army next year and will be following your excellent lead.

Finished a celtic chieften. (Vercingetorix from Warlord Games)

Brilliant. What a dramatic vignette :-*
-
Some terrific looking figures
:)

That Warlord figure was born to be up a mountain! One of Steve Saleh’s finest. Great painting and composition.

I did not know that this is a Steve Salah figure but it does not surprise me as his Lucid Eye sculpts are amoung my favourite miniatures at the moment.

Excellent figures and wonderful photos too.

Great photos. :)

It looks really good. I'll watch it develop.

Wonderful scenic shots as always Robert :-*

:-* just wow ! Lovely conversions, an evocative theme and excellent photos - truly inspiring

These are lovely miniatures and my painting does not do them justice, but i am very happy with my choice of colours.
The girl in the middle is a Steve Salah sculpt from Lucid Eye. The guards are from Bronze Age Miniatures in the USA (available from Fenris Games in the UK)

I am using various manufacturers and there is only a little diference between them. I will do a few comparison photos as soon as i can.

That would be great! I've held off picking up the Bronze Age minis because they're listed as 32mm, and I swear I'd read the difference with 28 was really noticable. Your pictures here seem to question that...unless Lucid Eye's Ziggurat range is also huge :D
-
Love that colour palette :-*
The Lucid Eye figure is gorgeous.
I have been sorely tempted by the whole Ziggurat range, but really have no need for them. Except that they are superb models... ::)
-
I dont know how i missed this thread before. Absolutely wonderful conversions and a very original subject. I will follow with great interest.

Great work. I do like the bronze age Italy feel :-*

Your miniatures and head sets are definately on my list for this collection.
