Title: My 40k Rogue Trader Crew
Post by: HRE Joseph III on August 05, 2009, 09:55:37 PM
Hello All.

I have been lurking here for a little while an thought it high time to post some of my own stuff.

There has been a 500 point 40K campaign going on at my FLGS. Here are a few pictures of my army. I'm using the witch hunter Codex to model a rogue trader landing party.

I apologize for my photography in advance.

Here is the captain converted from an old Vampire Wars figure.

the first mate, a slightly modified GW figure

the tech priest, heavily converted on from a reaper cleric model.

the navigator, the only unconverted figure in the army.

Some select crew members

My Xeno Askaris. I'm using these as impressed Imperial Guardsmen. They were converted by giving plastic Lizardmen skinks Kroot arms and cutting down the guns.

A special mention goes out to my character model in Dark Heresy. I converted him from the Catachan command sprue. The guns are from Heresy Miniatures.

In our last session, my character's arm was forcibly removed by a Dark Eldar destructor. So I painted another character model. This time he's a little older and a little wiser.

Finally, here is the heavy equipment for the army. The first is the Mule. It is converted from a Chimera, but counts as a Rhino.

And here are the Sentinels, which I imagine are power lifters with guns bolted on.

All comments welcome, especially ones to help improve my photography.

-Joe

Nice figs! I really like the Sentinels - nicely converted! - and the Skinks look great too.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Nothing wrong with the pics either.

They look really great, and well done for using unusual parts of an unusual codex to create a colourful army, if only more 40K players would do the same the game wouldn't be as monochrome as it is at the moment. Any chance of a full army shot?

Great stuff - love the skinks, great idea.

What edition of 40K are you using? These take me back the old Rogue Trader days before army lists and point values replaced players imaginations.

Very nice conversions and paint jobs. The have lots of character and even while some have a completly different look, it still looks like a team. Nice job!

Thanks for the comments, guys. I am using the current 5th edition rules. The Witch Hunter codex is a relic from 3rd edition. It's great for creating armies based around a powerful character. I hope they redo it and bring it more in line with current power levels. I really like this army. Unfortunately, it is not very effective on the table top.

I'll try to get a whole army shot when I play on Sunday.

Excellent. They all look very rogue trader'ish.

An army pic would be excellent.

Your space crew look like the 'confrontation' miniatures GW did before Necromunda came out, you know, their brats, techs and scavvies.

Indeed, I love the concept.

Em4 have the 'chagon' in their sci fi range. Sci-Fi Beastmen (well, broo).
I was considering doing a 40k army of them... Perhaps if the range get's bigger.
Or maybe i could take the 500 point rogue trader list option. A perfect enemy for my RT orks and they could be used with some of my short abhumans (SQUATS).

Joe's playing in the 500 pt. 40K Narrative campaign I have been running on Sundays. Although I am supposed to be impartial, Joe's conversions, espirit de corps, and overall sense of fun have caused me to root for him and even design a few scenarios with his unique force in mind.

His Rogue Trader now possesses the Null Stone, which will prove pivotal in this Sunday's final battle against the forces of Chaos on the planet of Sabbat-7.

And I am also the Dark Heresy GM responsible for robbing his character of his good left arm! Sorry, Joe! But that scene had so much cool brutality, it almost made up for the terrible loss! And Ink got a shiny new (or slightly re-conditioned) bionic arm--the Emperor protects!

Excellent stuff.

I miss the Imperial beast men...

I think that the plastic Catachan arms would fit on the plastic beastmen. Heck, they might fit better on the beastment than they do on the Catachans.

The beastment would fit really well in a Chaos mutant force. There are some cool rules for mutant armies in the Witchhunter codex.

Did these ages ago:

Stalled project, harking back to my Rogue Trader days, scrapped the human legs and went for the all beastmen look like the originals. The Packmaster is a nod to the original RT packmaster, (which I have 4 of! :D).

Did a load of chaos mutants using cadian, zombie catachan and shaved down ungor heads:

Never finished these either!  :D

Nope. No official RT list. Joe is using the Witchhunters codex to achieve his ends. Additionally, within the bounds of our narrative campaign, I've allowed him some latitude in how he structures his list.

Also, the imperial guard codex before current one had rules in it for heretical organisations using the "drills and skills" rules.
the renegade miniatures and upgrade packs you can still get through forge world.
quite cool actually.

Nice to see a fellow someone using the 5th edition rules!

As for the rules - I'd just like to make a pointer towards these guys, who've done a couple of mini codexes  of really good quality:

Yeah. I have been eying them for some time too. Maybe not a whole army though. Too many armies of various miniature genres in queue for that now. :(

I have wanted to do a Rogue Trader project since.. well, Rogue Trader.

Your example is fantastic.  In particular I like the Rogue Trader himself and the skink conversions.

It would be nice to play some games in the 40k-verse again sometime.  RPGs arent my thing so Fantasy Flights Rogue Trader/Dark Heresy isnt waht I am looking for.  A skirmish level campaign in the WH40k setting could be sweet however.  Has me thinking...

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the heads up.  I check Tales from the Maelstrom pretty regularly, I love some of the stuff that they come up with (and they were kind enough to include me on their blogroll too, which helps).

They seem to be pretty flexible with the rules systems that they use to game the 40k background.  I have some vague plans to try a campaign set in the 40k universe using either Mutants and Death Ray Guns or the space opera rule set from Ganesha Games, whenever it gets released.

It's also worth checking out their earlier http://jerikoreach.blogspot.com/ (http://jerikoreach.blogspot.com/). The fellas behind these are an inspiration.

They certainly are.  I wasnt aware of Jeriko Reach.  I will check it out, thanks!

Thanks for posting the links. Great inspiration.

I love the old Rogue Trader version of 40K and like a few of you want to get back into it. The guys behind the "tales" certainly play the game in the way we used to in the "olden days" before points values and army lists replaced players imaginations, (as I've said before - sorry bit of a hobby horse of mine!)

I've been toying with using my back of beyond stuff in a "low tech" version, the rogue trader crew being represented by a party of "archeologists". I might now raise a new rogue trader crew as well.

Any pics of your full Rogue Trader army yet?

I did a similar thing for my 40k collection, wanting some ice/cold planet humans that could work alongside my Valhallans. The Bolsheviks (and a coupla Whites too) with hats and fur caps worked wondrously. Some weapon swaps, and some other odds n' ends fit the ticket.

Unless you meant in spirit only, and were talking about early 20th century in RT-style.

I wasnt aware of Jeriko Reach.

Me neither. Thank you.

Very cool and thematic! Are you going to use them for the new FFG Rogue Trader?

Would fit perfectly.

The guy with the mohawk seems a little out of place, but other than that, I really like the conversions and the sentinels look great. Everything looks worn and used. I think you need to work on a lander/shuttle for your motley crew.

That's a very nice collection of vaganbonds you're building up there!
Those Xenos askari are really inspiring.

You know, what you're doing seems rather similar to the =I=Munda thing that sprung up on Dakkadakka a while ago.(they sort of adopted the free form approacht to the setting of GW's Inquisitor game, but using Necromunda and select shreds of 2nd edition for the basic rules).
Some of the threads they have are rather inspiring (especially those by Xanthos and Migsula), have a look here (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/jforum.page?module=search&action=search&search_keywords=%3DI%3DMunda&match_type=all&forum=&sort_by=time)...

And I agree, you need a lander or shuttle!

Hey guys

I'm one of the three running the Tale of the Maelstrom blog, and its great to hear your kind words - many thanks indeed!

There's some truly epic stuff in this thread, especially the use of the Kroot arms on the Skinks - that's truly inspired!

If you like this sort of thing, have a look at what Tim Leeson's doing with Enslavers over on Warseer. He's done such a cool job I'm thinking of having a go myself (with full credit to the originator of course!) and maybe pitting a Rogue Trader and/or some Deathwatch Marines against them!
