Title: Battle Tech anyone?
Post by: gamer Mac on June 29, 2020, 11:43:17 AM
My Brother has got him self a new toy, a 3D printer and he has always had a fetish for big metal things, he passed this on to me yesterday, he is busy painting a few more, I am sure he will add pics later
Here is my WIP of my attempt it is rather big Model!

So these are scaled for 15mm. Normal Battletech is 6mm. Its easy enough to do in Chitubox. Just scale everything by 200% The medium mechs are about 100mm. The 100 ton Atlas is 110mm. We are using this scale because Colin already has a great 15mm AK47 project going and I thought it would be cool if we could use that stuff with this. Kind of our own take on Battletech.

OK you can call it what you want ;)
In my game it will be a warhammer :D
It was the very first battlemech I bought about 30 years ago and the cover of the rules has this mech on it, don't know which was first BUT I think this is one of the unseen, loads of IP issues around this game

Aahh, Battletech...

It's been too long since I have dabbled in my own snail-paced project (in 15mm).

Those are some really great mechs, gentlemen. I am doing all of mine up from unseen model kits (although I'm scratchbuilding the Locust(s)), after some really, really arduous sourcing efforts. And then a lot of the mechs meeded to be 'biggerized' by adding spacers in 3 dimensions to each bodypart. Let's just say that was arduous too... ::)

And then more and more excellently looking 3D printed mechs show up here, and I'm questioning my sanity (and glacial pace) every time, since I still have very little to show for it, after all of these years.

Maybe I should jump on that band wagon and give in to this 3D mallarky after all...

Oh, and to clarify: FASA obtained the rights to use the imagery of a whole slew of mecha designs in their Battletech game from the original Japanese IP owners. One of these was the Tomahawk, from the anime Macross, which was introduced in Battletech as the Warhammer.

Now, the plot thickened, when Harmony Gold obtained the rights to (amongst others) the Macross series, to be dubbed and released in the US as Robotech. So now there were two universes, with (some of) the same mechs in them, with different names.

Then HG sued FASA, as they claimed to be the sole owner of the IP of those anime (and therefore mecha) outside of Japan. This legal battle took years, had the anime inspired mechs from Battletech removed from any material (after which they were referred to by fans as the 'unseen') and eventually led to the downfall of FASA. HG later went after any other companies using the original mechs (or derivatives thereof).

But it appears that after decades of rabidly pouncing on anything Battletech, they got their own when they were finally found to be in the wrong, and possibly had been from the very start(!). Little good that does to the defunct FASA, but it's a moral victory nevertheless for Battletech.

The whole story is much more convoluted than that, but this, basically, is the gist of it.

So yeah; Warhammer! :D

Superb. I've been thinking about printing one of these just as a one off as my old rpg character drove a Warhammer.

It's a shame a lot of the 3d files have been yanked from thingiverse and elsewhere in the last few weeks. Bloody Topps and pesky IP law...

Have you tried this site.....

This guy, Matt Mason, seems to convert a lot of the Mechwarrior Online mechs for 3d printing. Everything is on there....just not the classic designs.

When you do, i recommend using Meshmixer to split the models into various parts that you can glue down later. I managed to split my 7-8 print time down to 4 hours(approx) and save a ton of resin.  Also, i've printed them at less of a resolution than i would 28mm minis. It shows a few more lines, but I'd rather that than run the printer overnight. If you ever need an advice just PM  me. I'm not an expert but i have learned a couple of things in the last few months.

Anyway my MWO Archer is nearly finished. I may dig out some tank decals from somewhere to add unit numbers and add some foilage to the base.

That is my desert base. I know its slightly dark, but it means, at a stretch, I can use it on your forest boards too.

Thats me printing off a Commando tonight too. So, so far, we have an Atlas (100ton), Warhammer (70ton), Archer (70ton), Rifleman (60ton), Urbanmech (20ton) and a Commando (20ton).

I'm thinking of a Locust (20ton) and an Enforcer (50ton), too. I figute thats a good start?

Yeah, you might be right Colin.

Thats him printed off anyway. I need to fix the gun barrels a wee bit. And the arm is a bit messy too for some reason! ???

I've tried something a wee bitty different for the Urbanmech. Not great camo for a desert! lol

The Commando always had chunky forearms (certainly my two metals in the two different poses do), but the MWO design does pronounce it even more.

I grabbed most of Matt Mason's stls before the purge, and got a good chunk (several gig) of the others but a few were gone.  I believe they are resurfacing under alternative nom de guerres now though  ;)

Oh, superb painting on the Urbie BTW, I keep thinking about printing a big one to do up as a display piece 😁

I like the jet pilot looking helmet personally. The guns ARE a bit chunky!

Those look super!  :-*

I played MWO for at least 6 years with a clan. Great fun. I had a huge inventory of mechs (100+) and liked to play the Raven, Jenner, Cataphract, and Stalker. Really liked the Stalker. Then the Clan mechs came out and I crossed over to the dark side...  :D

The Commando looks spot on to me, at least from a MWO perspective. I had a friend who could destroy just about anything with that mech. He'd drive everybody totally craze. Really hard to kill and you almost always had to leg him first.

Great thread and project!

It was my favourite in the original MW computer game. You could go up to a battle master and run into its leg and leg it quick. It couldn't look down so couldn't shoot you. Lol. Not aged well that game

Weeeeeelll! Funny you should say. I printed this off on Saturday. I was having problems with the slicing software messing up the detail on some of these prints, so I spent the time doing the supports for this one myself. Its still a learning process for me and it looks like I didn't support the rhs gun enough.

So, one of my other favourite designs, was the Rifleman. Again, this is the more modern, computer game version of the design.

I've tried doing a desert, digital camo over it. And a had some cheeky spare Desert Rat decals I've used on him.

The back is a bit messed up. The supports from the 3d print seem to have taken some of the detail out. I've tried to hide it with paint as best as I can! :'(

And this is the rest of the mechs I'm planning on using in our games. Colin still has the Warhammer that we'll add to this....

Ps. The Hunchback(the one with the mahoosive big shoulder laser) was torture to build! I scaled down some 28mm scale mechs to 15mm. Theres small parts that join various things together and let yiu articulate the model, in 15mm these parts were too small!! :'( :'( :'(

Cheers fellas!

Nothing finished thats new here (the Commando is WIP), just some extra pics of the Urbie Urbanmech with urban digital camo. Not in an urban setting! ;)

I may print another one to paint and reduce the layer height, theres some line on it that I didn't think I could take off without damaging the model!

I never used to like the Urbanmech design, but it really has grown on me. Its just soo different. Its like the Nissan Datsun of the mech world...the crappy underdog that people like!

This next guy is WIP. Its a Commando. I tried to do Commando colours on him. I may revisit the front torso section with filler. I thought I coukd get away with not doing anything there, but the gap is bothering me more and more!! >:(

Andym,

No airbrush or stencils required! Just slightly more thinned paint than usual so it runs easier and a use of the natural edges of the model to finish off certain sides of the pattern. The pattern itself is partially hidden by washes and glazing to deepen the shadows. It helps so that you don't really notice how bad the pattern is!  ;)

Next up is a Commando. I've tried to do it in British Commando uniform colours.

There's plenty of love for it in my experience, it's just sort of dormant. The universe was always driven by the fiction - now there's new novels being published again, that should help a lot as should the pending availability of the new lance packs...

Yep, they look great in 15mm.

And offer so many more options for the use of infantry, tanks and such. Perhaps one day you could include some of those in one of your photos.

Like I said before, I'm a clan kinda guy. I love their mechs.

Liked the Clan stuff when I was younger, I still like the Micheal Stackpole novels on the subject.

But these days I am definitely 3025 all the way.

Old git that I am lol

Wish I had grabbed some files when they were still available.

I'm working on sorting the files I have and finding some way to get them to those who want them.  Online file hosting is tt my forte but I'll figure it out!

I'll post up when I've managed it.

Ate you hollowing them out to print?

You will need to wait on my brother for a full answer as far as I know the models are hollow in certain parts

Nice one Col! I like the battle damage/chipping on the legs!

All these models are set to 30% infill. So mostly hollowed, yes!

Well me tried our first game tonight we had 5 mechs each and it may have been a bit too many
Some photos of the action/ or mechs falling over a lot
We started off rolling pilot checks for every movement but all our mechs kept on falling over

First time we have played these rules in about 20 years. so we were a bit slow and it will be a while before we finish

Marvellous to see these in play, but why were you rolling piloting checks every time something moved? Everyone wading through water?
Title: Re: Battle Tech anyone?
Post by: gamer Mac on August 27, 2020, 09:39:54 AM
We were rolling every time because my brother was reading the rules ;D
It has been a very long time since we played this game, it is taking a bit of relearning

Cheeky b@#$@$$! lol

There was a full page table in the Master Rulebook we were using, that gave all the instances to roll pilot checks. Moving was one of them. Depending on the speed/no. of hexes, the modifier went up to +4. Using default Inner Sphere Piloting Skill, that meant roll over an 8 on 2d6!(4+4=8)

We agreed pretty quickly just to do it for running and jumping!

If you are moving in water, its a check for EVERY hex!! :o

Reading the rules at the moment and can't find what you were taking about

You don't roll for walking, running or jumping, unless there's a terrain reason for it.

I think you're misinterpreting modifiers to shoot at a target as modifying a piloting skill roll.

I've tried something a wee bitty different for the Urbanmech. Not great camo for a desert! lol

Really, that would depend a lot on the nature of what chemical compounds are found in that desert.
Cobalt Chloride fields would lend themselves to that scheme, readily.

How did I miss this?!  I love it.  I just wish I had gotten a larger resin printer, so I could do these in 28mm.

Though you could slice and print, a 28mm mech in resin gonna be expensive. Be better to do on an fdm printer.

Not if you hollow it out.  Not so bad then.
