Title: Fixing cloudy sealer on flock/clump foliage/etc
Post by: CookAndrewB on June 29, 2020, 03:39:49 PM
I recently mixed up a dilute matte varnish spray for sealing some flock and clump foliage. The first use was applied to an entire terrain mat with perfect results. The second use, about two weeks later, was to seal some smaller areas on tree bases and it turned everything cloudy. The trees themselves were salvaged through a mix of techniques, including gloss varnish and then re-varnishing in matte. Some bases were fixed by simply re-wetting the foliage with a dropper bottle, and the drying process cleared everything up. But a couple pieces have been really stubborn. I was wondering if anyone has had luck bringing some very cloudy grass or foliage pieces back from the brink. At this point, I'm just considering re-flocking over top of the bad spots and moving on, but if there is an easy way to skip that, I'm all ears!

By the way, the culprit was definitely humidity. I know better, but just wasn't thinking. I'm just confused as to why I have a couple pieces that seem dead set on not recovering.

Thanks!

Andrew

Nothing? Man, I thought for sure that someone here would have an idea or solution that I hadn't thought of.

Is there at least a prize for stumping the big brains? lol

I think re flocking might be the easiest option in the long run. Just keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t happen in that area again.

You could also paint some thinned colour to bring it back

Ah, see, I knew there were some decent ideas out there!

May try hitting the areas with variations of green /brown wash to see if that doesn't do the trick. If not, re-flock it is! In truth, I don't think I have a great reason to seal as the pieces in question won't get a lot of wear and tear. They are just around the base of some trees.

How humid was it? Are you in Florida, or Scotland?

I had a similar problem, but it was due to a very hot garage, 95f, and my acrylic coating fogged. On the second go I put my medium and materials in the fridge and it worked fine.

I've tried to srapy a light coat of "gloss" varnish on a cloudy mini once... and it worked quite well.

Maybe you could try on a test piece to see if it works.
