In the mood to try something new. I am looking for a game that has 3-5 figures per side.
Any period or genre. What would you recommend?
-
At a first glance, 3-5 figures is tough limitation, but when you start to think about it there are loads of potential games. I eas quite intrigued by your question and I often find inspiration in movies or books and there you can find many scenes that can provide a potential small wargame:
-Wild West gunfight
-Samurai
-Three musketeers
-Pirates
-Gangster shoot-out
-Gladiators
-Snipers(WW1/WW2)
-Napoleonic (Sharpe)
Etc
Another avenue could be historical situations involving a few characters. My favourites here are encounters where kings or famous leaders personally were involved in combat and the outcome could have a significant impact on the course of history:
-Gustavus Adolphus fell at Lutzen 1632
-Charles X almost killed at Warzaw 1656
-Louis Napoleon killed by Zulus 1879
-Richard III died fighting at Bosworth 1485
-Vlad the Impaler killed fighting Turks 1476
Etc
For miniatures I would go for 40mm if available for the action chosen
Please post your game once you decided and good luck with your project ;)

Start by tracking down the Brink of Battle rules (if you don't have them already). They provide a smorgasbord of opportunities for just such games. Not my thing so I sold the set of the rules I had on last year, maybe the year before. For me, a small game is 150 or so figures - per side! Or several times that - per side!!!
-
The Fistful of Lead stable of rules would suit you I think. Multi-genre and very cinematic with a minimal figure count. There are various supplements for different genres as well :)
-
What about battletech? Big stompy robots shooting the crap out of each other?
I can also highly recommend 7TV. We had some great games of that! Really fun rules. Maybe slightly more figs per side. Usually about 7-8 depending on the cast.

Fistful of lead every time for me.
Any period, and only needs 5 Figures.
We’ve used them for loads of games in different periods.
-
Having been introduced to FFoL by Flatpack, Hasbeen, Vodkafan and gents, I can honestly say I was impressed at how easy to pick up and fun to get little used minis on the table. I have played a sci fi game and a Napoleonic one with them and enjoyed both.
I wouldn’t look to them for a serious or in depth period skirmish, but they are particularly useful for a group of mates to sit about, take the rip and hopefully fulfil the odd objective without getting bogged down in complex tables.

Thanks Guys,
Not so much looking for rules but an actually game with figures and rules.
One I am thinking about, for example, is Burrows and badgers. Any other
ideas?
Thanks!

+1 to Fist Full of Lead, but also +1 to 40mm.
If I was starting a new period I would go to 40mm.
Unfortunately I am already heavily invested in 28mm (in lots of periods)

B&B is fun and not too detailed. Plays out in a couple of hours. Campaign progression means characters get harder....great minis, lots of fun.
-
WWI dogfighting is the only one that wouldn't look ridiculous.

Hi, what about "Normandy Firefight"? This is a very small-scale WW2 skirmish game that needs about 3-6 figures per side. I guess anything "3 Musketeers-ish" would be interesting. I have the old set "All For One" sold by Redoubt Games, which had a scenario booklet as well. You may well need more figures for the non-Musketeer side. The Redoubt figure range was quite extensive but I believe there are more recent figure ranges as well.

Pulp alley.
Only need a few figures and the rules can work for pretty much any type of figures.

Super Dungeon Explore? Is that still a thing?

If you are looking specifically for a rules and game in one box the two off the top of my head are Aristeia! (link (https://store.corvusbelli.com/boardgames/aristeia/core/aristeia-core)) which is a Sci Fi arena combat game, and 1-48 Tactic (link (http://1-48tactic.com/)) which is a WW2 skirmish game using a section of 1/48 scale models per side.

Have you looked into the ShadeSpire games by GW? It's a board game/miniatures game mash up. I believe the starter box comes with a 3 figure faction and an opposing 5 figure faction. Factions expansions can also be purchased and in general fit in with your 3-5 figure a side requirement.
Rogue Stars might also fit what you are looking for. It's a rules set that fits low figure count games. The old Inquisition game by GW (figures were 40mm in scale) is also a very low figure count game.
Finally, Rangers of Shadow Deep might fit with what your looking for. Low model count and can be played either solo or as a cooperative game.

Codsticker, Davout,
Thanks guys. That was the kinds of game stuff I was requesting.
few figures per side no more than 5-7 with rules.
Any other suggestions, keep them coming!

+1 Pulp Alley for just about anything.
Numerous videos on You Tube to watch to ease into it.

Any of the Nordic Weasel Five Core games would work.
https://www.wargamevault.com/browse/pub/5701/Nordic-Weasel-Games
"Five leagues from the Borderlands", low magic fantasy, I really enjoy (1st edition, I haven't played 2nd), and it uses 4-8 figures a side.
"Five Parsecs from Home", is sci-fi and uses the same low figure count. One of it's brethren, "Salvage Crew" or "Bug Hunt" are the same but with differing focus on the campaign parts.
There's quite a few, but those are the ones I've played personally.
"The Department", Four-Color Studios, is also a low figure count game that I really enjoy playing.

Jugula - 4 gladiators a side. Terrific game, although it is more a deck building game with gladiators than a simulation.
-
.45 Adventure and Gloire (Pulp and 17th C) are designed for very few figures each side.
That newish Crusades skirmish set by Osprey.
En Garde (Osprey)
Just off the top of my head.
-
Maybe Deadzone 2nd edition from Mantic - minis, scenery, playmat, rules and dice all in the box.
Or on the same tack even Dreadball 2nd edition, again all in the box.
Fun games, too.
-
Relicblade is a brilliant fantasy skirmish game, 3 or 4 models a side

(looking at my shelves :) )
Wildlands (not actually played it yet, but fits the criteria)
Ninja All Stars (really enjoyable and surprisingly cheap)
Speed Freeks (I guess Gaslands but all in one box)
Firefly Brigands & Browncoats (again not played it yet)
MTG Arena of the Planeswalkers (far better than it should be :D)
Rail Raiders Infinity (love this, don't believe the grumps who got the short end of the kickstarter stick)
With a few more models (I think less than 10 still) which are two of my favourites
Mars Attacks
Test of Honour
-
It'd be silly of me not to suggest planet 28 - it's a Sci fi system for small narrative games, between 2&10 minis a side, with a solo expansion adding rules for single character warbands. It's also free from wargames vault :)
-
Another thumbs up for Relicblade.

Great ideas everyone. Thanks I am looking into these and seeing what
catches my interested.
